I've take advantage over the past year or so to grab some cake pops while at the zoo, ordering a gift basket for friends, and pre-ordering bagels to pick up curbside. My husband surprised me on my birthday with cakepops from Baked By Yael and I couldn't have been happier. What an awesome treat. Despite my nut allergy (which, BTW, they are totally accommodating to) BBY was able to assemble a custom 'tiered' presentation of a huge variety of flavors. Even cooler, they wrapped it up in the flag of the country of my ancestry... This is possibly my favorite place for desserts anywhere in DC. read more

In an effort to support local businesses we decided to use Baked By Yael to cater our son's bris. We got a breakfast platter with bagels and a whole lox and veggies spread, of course we also got cake pops in a very cute little carriage. The sweets are good (if pricey) at Baked By Yael, but man does the service suck. Truly. Yael seems to hire a lot of teenagers. I live in the neighborhood so I've been to the store a few times. If you order a sandwich, be prepared to wait 15-20 minutes even if no line. And one time I ordered a bagel and asked for the cream cheese to be on it, but was handed cream cheese in a small container. When I said I was on my way somewhere where it would be a hassle to not have something ready made, the teen said "We don't put the cream cheese on," and turned and left. What kind of bagel shop refuses to put cream cheese on a bagel? A friend of mine said she visited the store around Passover and asked if the items were kosher. The girl at the register asked "What's kosher mean?" So, set your customer service expectations low and you'll be fine. read more

My fiance and I attended a furloughed government employee "cake pop" party and could not be more pleased. We realize this event was a free benefit but the employees and the generosity of this business needs to get recognized. They gathered about 20 of us into a room where we kneeded cake batter, fomed balls, dipped said balls in candy coating and honestly watched our furlough worries evaporate for an hour. Oh yeah at the end we got to eat our creations. These are delicious and for 3 bux these bundles of joy are a perfect snack pretty much any time (except in a church pew for your Uncle's funeral - then don't do it, you insensitive monster!) Needless to say I am pretty high on cake pops right now. They gave us 12 each and I cannot put them down they are so good! The employees Connor, Kami (sp? - sorry) and of course Yael could not have made a better impression on everyone there. We firmly endorse organizing a cake pop party, heading by for another treat or one of their bagels. We intend to be back very soon. read more

Sorry, I guess I am not a cake pop fan. They were gluey and overly sweet. I think it makes sense to offer more items because I can't imagine cake pops can sustain an entire store. A dozen was $33...sort of outrageous and they just box them flat. A few fell off their stems when packaged. I think for $33 maybe a creative bouquet is in order. They will probably do well because of the location, but I won't make a special trip. read more

There isn't a ton of things to choose from, but what they do have is very very good. We got several different flavors, but my favorite was the birthday cake with vanilla icing. My husband loves the cookies and cream, which is what they are best known for. The staff was very friendly and eager to help. read more

My work ordered a ton of Yael's cake pops for a work function and they were a huge hit, and all gone within minutes of the event starting because they were so good! It was hard to set them up and not sneak a bite-- they were beautifully decorated and packaged nicely so my team and I could set it up easily. Everyone loved them! read more

I love this bakery and go there frequently for bagels and sweets. And this weekend, I was reminded of how great it is to work with a small neighborhood business when Yael and her staff helped me put together a last minute care package for my daughter in college. Time was of the essence, and the staff worked with me to put together a beautiful basket of cake pops, cookie bars, and raspberry bars. It arrived on time and in perfect condition. Yael's makes real bagels, which is pretty amazing. The coffee is pretty good, and I'm told the cake pops (not my thing) are great. I live nearby and, because I didn't know any better, I used to go to the Starbucks a little further down in the morning on weekends to get coffee and start my day. One day, there was a huge line at the Starbucks because of zoo people. I bailed and went to Yael, believing at that time it was a kids' type of place selling fad food, but that they might have coffee. I was pleasantly surprised. Although there is some element of the faddishness, in that they sell cake pops, they also do real bagels from scratch and they are great, and the coffee is better than Starbucks. I am seriously shocked that this place has 4.5 stars. Maybe they put on an excellent cake-pop birthday party. What they don't do however, is make delicious bagels. Perhaps the other reviewers aren't familiar with bagel culture, but the shrunken, rock-hard bread experiments being served by this joint certainly don't qualify as good. I was overjoyed when I heard this place had opened as I love a good bagel sandwich. My hopes were quickly dashed when, during my first visit, it took about 15 minutes to make two cold bagel sandwiches (no line) and then on the first bite, I almost lost a tooth. Homemade bagels should be crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Bethesda bagel is far and away a better stop that this. read more

Cake pops are absolutely delicious. But the service is hit or miss and the bagel sandwiches are a no-go. For example, I entered the store one Sunday, and I was the only customer. I said hello to the woman at the cash register, and it was several minutes before she even looked up at me from the iPad. I ordered a veggie bagel sandwich. The woman at the cash register had to give the menu to another woman in the back to make it since she didn't even know the basic sandwich ingredients. I'm not sure what sandwich I took home since it definitely wasn't what I ordered: something that resembled cooked eggs (I think - smelled like and had the texture of fish), spinach, and some type of spread. It was not good at all -- especially for almost $7! read more

I am picky about my bagels and couldn't believe how good Yael's bagels are. They are always fresh and they are also the size that a bagel should be! (Bagels are not soccer balls after all...) Filling with no guilt. I've also ordered cake pops for a bunch of different occasions now and everyone loves them. They are a great new thing to bring for a hostess gift, which everyone gets to enjoy, and also for a special occasion. They were the giveaway for one gathering I had and everyone left with a smile. The cake pops and the customer service from the employees were amazing, I would come back for both. However, I came in on a busy day and the woman who I assumed to be the owner got up without addressing me and I had to wait for a regular employee to come help me out. Amazing...superb..the adjectives in the reviews below sold me. Just like they were probably sold by the presentation because the taste of these cake pops were severely lacking. I broke my diet for cake pop from baked by yael... Or what I thought was a cake pop. To my dismay I realized that what I had sunk my teeth into was in fact not a cake pop but instead a ball of lightly sweetened play dough dipped in what appears to be some bland waxy coating. Lightly sweetened is fine if your baked goods have depth in flavor. These baked goods have the audacity to make no attempt at covering up its less than mediocre flavor with sugar. I thought the orange and brown cake pop would be pumpkin something in celebration of the season instead I bit into play dough flavor in the mock color of red velvet. I'm glad that the cake pops were the size of my big toe or I would have risked insulting my boyfriend (who gave me the cakepops) by tossing it in the trash rather than choking down a bite and a half. Any of my friends will tell you that I'm slightly obsessed with dessert--and they are right! As such, I'd like to think I have a refined palate for identifying truly great sweet treats. I will admit that I was blown away by the cake pops I had from Baked by Yael. A friend was awesome enough to send me a basket of cake pops and I couldn't have asked for a better gift. They. are. amazing. I'm even thinking about ordering another basket just for me. I told you I was obsessed! I took one bite, and all I could do was say "WOW!". They are rich, tasty and the perfect bite! The birthday cake and cookies & cream flavors are the best. For those of you who may worry about ordering desserts for delivery, don't be. They looked fantastic when they arrived, and have lasted a couple days already. I don't know how I didn't eat them all the first day. It annoys me when food establishments don't list their prices so there's that. But this review is really about the cake pop itself. It's a very small cake pop- the ones I've had before are usually a little bigger so you get more bites! Especially at the price point of $3.25, I would expect it to be a little more substantial... I had the birthday cake and it was "meh". It wasn't bad but it didn't taste special- tasted like something I might bake myself when feeling snackish... I expect a little more wow when I buy a dessert out. I'm bummed because I work next door and was excited for a place specializing in baked goods, but I do not think I'll be returning. read more

This rating is more so for the staff than the food. My friends and I came here to get something sweet we were all craving. I happened to have a bag of cashews I was eating. I wasn't aware that this was a nut free bakery. I was rudely told by I assume the manager on duty I needed to leave the store for having the cashews. I apologized, went outside and finished eating the cashews. I've worked in nut free and gluten free environments before so I understand not wanting them in the store. When I came back in however, Ashley the manager that told me to leave was eating an entire meal over her prep area spreading her disgusting germs all over the product she was making. One thing you never do is eat in the kitchen, let alone in front of the guests you're serving. Upper management really need to sit down and speak with her because her behavior is truly unacceptable. Hopefully they'll find someone more professional to run their store. read more

So I just brought Yael's bagels and cream cheese (the sun dried tomato is life changing, fyi) to a meeting, and was really impressed with how authentic they were. Your cakepops are delicious, with the perfect consistency. They were the hit of the party. They are bite-size, so serving sizes are easy to control and it was also easy to set aside a few to send off guests with leftovers: " two red velvet cakepops for you, and three chocolate and one lemon for you". OH.MY.GOD. I'm not one to post my opinion, but Yael's baked goods deserve a shout out. I had a cake on a stick and was blown away by the amount of flavor in such a perfectly satisfying and fun sized treat! How she gets them to be so moist is beyond me. To illustrate the joy I had eating her treats: my husband has been deployed for nearly 3mo and for the time I was savoring her desert I completely forgot he was gone- there are THAT good!!! I had long lamented that it was difficult to find a good bagel in Washington DC, and then Baked by Yael came along. Not only are the bagels the best in the city but the other treats - black and white cookies, rugelach, and, of course, cake pops are unparalleled as far as I'm concerned. I don't understand why Georgetown cupcakes get all the attention - these treats are significantly better and there seem to be plenty of options for those with food allergies I have found the customer service excellent as well - they're willing to come out to me when I have my dog and don't want to leave him tied up outside. read more
