Excellent BBQ and sides! Brisket, pork ribs, sausage, even holiday smoked turkeys are all delicious!

Trying to hit all the new Top 50 BBQ places and was able to make it to Baker Boys yesterday. Hit them up around 4pm and only had room for a few meats but here is what i thought of their Q. Brisket - Had the moist selection, great bark, lots of flavor and had a great texture. Meat had a great combo of moistness, smoke ring and flavor and the fat was rendered well. Turkey - had a great rub and was also full of flavor and was moist. Ribs - Had a small piece after meeting a nice couple on their Top 50 journey who shared theirs with me. Was smoked well with a great rub and not over cooked. I should have gone back for more rib. The couple liked their sausage and really liked the pork loin, I should have asked if I could sample but I was too entranced with the banana pudding which I thought was amazing and a must order item here. Also, their prices were below most Top 50 Q places and the owner is a great guy who came out to talk with us. Brisket, turkey, and sides were all tasty! The meat was tender and turkey juicy! The potatoes with cheese were amazing! Glad we checked it out on our way back to ATX. I didn't give them 5 stars because they were not very friendly but patient with us in ordering. It was our first time there and they could have just been more patient. We stopped here on a trip through Gonzales and holy cow, what great food and people. We each had the two meat plate, a stuffed chicken and topped them off with banana pudding. Went a little out of the way to eat here on our way to New Braunfels from La Porte. Lots of cars here when we pulled up, which is always a good sign. My husband got a three meat plate- brisket , chicken and ribs. I got chicken and snitched bites of his brisket and ribs. The brisket and chicken were excellent. Ribs were good, just not as good as the rest. All the sides were good. I wish we could have tried the banana pudding or pies, but they are a no go for our diets. We will visit here again! Update: today was our third visit. It was possibly even better than the first two. One tiny observation- I had dark meat chicken, which was a pretty small portion. This could be the best turkey we've ever tasted. Meats are seasoned with big chunks of pepper as well as the barbecue sauce that goes along with it. Brisket a little bit on the dry side for my taste but nice pink smoke ring. Big seating area with lots of tables and they move people through the line pretty quickly. When you're in town be sure you give yourself an extra hour to run over to the jail house museum and up the road to see the original come and take it cannon. read more

Came down to Gonzales for the Memorial and Yelped around for places nearby to eat. This place had great Yelp reviews so decided to head here... it wasn't hard to find but honestly the place looked like it was closed. Something out front stating they are open might help? We almost left but luckily we got down 'just to check' and so happy we did. They were open and welcomed with smiles! Got the turkey with some sides EVERYTHING was delicious. We stopped at a couple BBQ spots on our trip down here but this place had the moistest and most flavor turkey, that pepper rub crust sure was delicious. Went to Baker boys over the Christmas holidays looking for the best bar b q in the area. They did not disappoint! I went to 2 other Q places on Tx. Monthly top 50 list and this was by far the best. First of all I like that they offer plates instead of everything by the pound. I got the 3 meat plate with brisket, ribs and sausage. Brisket...great smoke ring, moist , tender with great flavor. Ribs...unusual spice but I really enjoyed the flavor...cooked to perfection. Sausage...firm, great snap, great flavor...best by far of the 3 restaurants. Sides were very good also. I did not try there sauce...meats did not need any help at all. I have been to several bar b q places throughout the state and for me, this would have to be one of my favorites. I WILL BE BACK! Get the giblet rice as your side. It's savory and unique - I haven't seen it anywhere else but thanks to Baker Boys, I wish it was on everyone's menu. Our 20th stop of the Top 50 BBQ joints was Baker Boys BBQ. We ordered three two-meat plates: Ribs/Brisket with potato salad and green beans, turkey/chicken (white meat) with green beans and cheesy potatoes, and Brisket/Sausage with green beans and pinto beans. The chicken and turkey were the best of what we tried. Both were seasoned well and moist. The ribs were fairly tender and it's was noticeable to the connoisseur that they weren't wrapped. The brisket was tender, but almost to the point of over cooked. The slices would have broken if they were put to the "bend test". Overall it was a good meal. I have been waiting for a year for Baker Boys to open their restaurant. I managed to get here on their second day of business. The response from the public was amazing and I now know why. I had the chopped beef sandwich and their Stuffed Chicken Legs. OMG those stuffed chicken legs were amazing! You MUST try them. The sandwich was perfect, finely chopped no gristle, no chucks of fat... But still tender and juicy. I was in BBQ heaven. Next time I will arrive earlier to ensure I can try their brisket. There were so many people in line they sold out of brisket. Told me they are going to increase that menu item. Try this place! You willlike it! And their sauce is a secret recipe... My goal is to eat at all the 2017 Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ joints within a year. I feel like it is a rite of passage for true Texas barbecue fans. I am going to post a wrap up of all 50 and at each of the places that I have not written about before. I am already a dozen stops into the list so far. On this day, I had already gone to City Market (Luling). Gonzales is not too far from there so I made another stop at Baker Boys BBQ. I had been to Baker Boys before while researching for the list on behalf of Texas Monthly. I arrived around 3 PM that afternoon but remembered it being a good experience. For the places I have not been to/written about, I am trying to order a decent chunk of the menu. I am getting annoyed at some of the pictures on social media where people are barely spending five bucks at some of these places. It is all about the sticker to some (Yeti is giving out prizes if you get certain stickers). I feel like you should order more and get the full experience at each place. I will get off my soap box now. We ordered a little bit of brisket, pork ribs, sausage, chicken, turkey, pork loin, and stuffed chicken leg with a banana pudding. Most of the meats are cooked on vault smokers with oak lump charcoal. Everything had a good flavor. The brisket took a little effort to chew through. The pork ribs were nice and tender. The homemade pork and beef sausage surprised me. It had a good texture and taste to it. The turkey and chicken were juicy, but I prefer the skin of the chicken to be crispier. The highlights of the meal for me were the pork loin and stuffed chicken leg. The moist and flavorful pork loin ate very well. I loved the amount of smoke and seasoning on it. Phil and Wayne Baker (father and son) participated in competition barbecue before opening Baker Boys. The idea of the stuffed chicken came from that. They wrap the leg with the skin on around jalapeño and onion. They smoke it and then crisp up the skin on direct heat. It makes for one delicious bite. The homemade banana pudding rounded out the meal nicely. Gonzales is only 14 miles south of I-10. Make a detour to Baker Boys BBQ if you are in the area. You will find a Top 50 worthy lineup. Do not skimp here. Go ahead and order a few of the meats. Your stomach and taste buds will thank you. With the menu prices that low, you might as well. read more

I wouldn't consider this place one of the best in the state. Not by a long shot. But it was filling and the cole slaw was pretty good.

This place is fancy and new....the bar b que is ok but wayyyyyy overpriced. Plus we had to repeat our order 4 times because the sandwich exchanged that many hands in a 20ft span. It's cafeteria style....and not one person smiled......there were people yelling from the back and they yelled in answer. And not jusT short answers they were all clearly upset with oNe another. This is an excellent version of Texas barbecue. We ordered a pound of brisket and a quarter pound of turkey both were extremely moist and well cooked. Although they had barbecue sauce that was excellent the barbecue was even better without the sauce. The staff was friendly and the service was extremely fast. We have property near Gonzales but we never really go there. We decided to try something new and ended up at Baker Boys. I got the 2 meat plate with brisket and chicken. Two sides I got was cheesy potatoes and Cole slaw. Whenever I try a new bbq place there are 3 or 4 things I always try. Except for the cheesy potatoes (which I got because they sounded good) these are them. Chicken is hard to get right, brisket is a texas staple and if ur Cole slaw ain't on point well... So the brisket was really tasty and not too dry but the chicken was actually the best. It was tender, juicy and flavorful. Of course I got the dark meat (leg and thigh) but it was yummy. The slaw was very nice...not too sweet but it could have used a little black pepper. When I added it at the table or was perfect. Now for the cheesy potatoes, I mean, come on, salty, cheesy, potatoey goodness. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is I've only been once and didn't get to try the ribs and potatoes salad which is the other items I scrutinize but I will be back for sure read more
