We have property near Gonzales but we never really go there. We decided to try something new and ended up at Baker Boys. I got the 2 meat plate with brisket and chicken. Two sides I got was cheesy potatoes and Cole slaw. Whenever I try a new bbq place there are 3 or 4 things I always try. Except for the cheesy potatoes (which I got because they sounded good) these are them. Chicken is hard to get right, brisket is a texas staple and if ur Cole slaw ain't on point well... So the brisket was really tasty and not too dry but the chicken was actually the best. It was tender, juicy and flavorful. Of course I got the dark meat (leg and thigh) but it was yummy. The slaw was very nice...not too sweet but it could have used a little black pepper. When I added it at the table or was perfect. Now for the cheesy potatoes, I mean, come on, salty, cheesy, potatoey goodness. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is I've only been once and didn't get to try the ribs and potatoes salad which is the other items I scrutinize but I will be back for sure read more

Husband and I stopped in Gonzales for BBQ at Baker Brothers at about 3:30 on Saturday. We got 3/4 pound of lean brisket, 2 links of sausage and coke slaw to go. The brisket was moist and tender with great smoke flavor and bark. The sausage is wonderful. I loved their coke slaw. It was creamy and slightly tart. The restaurant is large, with both indoor and outdoor seating, but it was 102 in the shade and no one was sitting outside. The restrooms were fairly large and very clean. They have large screen TV's for sports fans. You order at the counter and then select your sides. There were several families with children. The kids seemed to be enjoying chicken and macaroni & cheese. I saw them cut up a chicken order and it looked very juicy and good. This place was a nice surprise. No shortage of salt here. Ordered 2 meat plate with sausage, brisket, pinto beans and green beans. I was going to order the potato salad but not house made. Sausage looked great, reminded me of a link from luling city market but that is where it stopped. It is a Finley ground sausage but pretty dry , you can taste the smoke but flavors are a little muddled. The brisket is heavy on salt once you get past that there is some beef flavor and a prominent smoke ring but not much smoke flavor. Overall was tender but on the dry side. I am guessing they are not on a true wood pit but on some sort of gas assist. Sauce is interesting but I opted out, it's got a lot going on. Probably good on chicken or turkey but it's got a sweet sour chili powder thing going on with a touch of heat on the back. The sides were pretty blah. The beans heavy on salt and almost too firm. The green beans are nothing special open can add lots of salt and there you are. Gonzales has never impressed me much in the way of BBQ I have hopes for this place, but time will tell. For me they are one step above Bill Millers and ten steps behind really good BBQ. The ice tea was sure good. read more

Staying in Gonzales after a trip to Texas State University in San Marcus and we found Baker Boys BBQ. This part of Texas is known for good BBQ so we always make a point to find BBQ when we are up this way. Baker Boys didn't disappoint it was fantastic! Found Baker Boys on the Texas Monthly Top 50 list and decided to stop by when returning from the coast. We arrived after lunch and had no wait. The place is large and reminds me of an old VFW outpost with long tables and chairs down the side. Overall good atmosphere and just a really nice place to eat. We had the brisket, sausage and potato salad. Brisket had really good smoke ring, nice color to the bark, very moist and slightly salty flavor which helped to cut through the fatty meat. The sausage was very good as well and had great smokiness to the flavor. We found the potato salad to be creamy and appeared to be one the of the best sides. I also want to mention that you get good value for your money given their portions and price per pound on the meats. It's worth a stop or detour if you're heading down the interstate. read more

We were on a road trip heading out to the Shiner distillery down the road, and decided to stop for lunch at Baker Boys BBQ. Mostly great food and service! We sampled the sliced brisket, sausage, stuffed chicken, brisket chili, and some various sides. I'd have to say the sliced brisket was the best. Well cooked and seasoned! A lot of places do brisket half ass by only cooking the brisket well. These other places must just assume you will drown your sliced brisket in BBQ sauce as they don't season their brisket at all. The staff at Bakers Boys BBQ know what they are doing. They made a brisket so good that you don't even need to eat it with BBQ sauce. This is truly the gold standard of brisket. My next favorite item was the stuffed chicken. It is a deboned chicken seasoned and stuffed with onions and a jalapeno pepper. Delicious! The sausage was standard fare as were most of the sides. I wish it had some kick to it, but that is my personal preference. Probably my least favorite thing was the brisket chili. It sounded so interesting when I heard about it, but it was merely adequate. I won't be dreaming about it.... ...but I will be dreaming about that perfect sliced brisket! *Watch out for those BBQ sauce squeeze bottles! I tried it based on fellow co-workers input and reviews. I was pleasantly surprised at just how good the food was. It was nearing closing time and I did not get to try the stuffed chicken, but the brisket and sausage were very good, no need for a sauce, but when I tried the sauce it was very good as well - homemade and unlike anything you find in HEB or a grocery store. Sisters wanted me to go check out Bucees so we decided to try Baker Boys. We had all tried the barbque places in Luling Tx and liked them. We each ordered something different i had brisket, one had ribs, and one turkey. The brisket and turkey were both very peppery tasting almost to the point of not being enjoyable. The ribs were very flavorful moist and just the right amount of seasoning. I recommed that if your in Gonzales Tx this place is worth the stop otherwise go the opposite way on IH 10 to Luling Tx and eat barbque there. It's better and not as far of a drive. read more

Home town family owned restaurant. Brisket has nice bark. I love the chopped beef just good flavored meat. No sauce. Not sweet like most places I've had it. Stuffed chicken leg is tasty.
