Every week at my school, I do a food ABCs with my kindergarten class. Last week was the letter D, and since it was the week before Christmas break I decided we could have a sweet treat instead of our usual healthy choices. I of course immediately thought of donuts and saw that bakers dozen was on the way to the school I work at. I stopped in and was greeted with a strong whiff of sugary donut goodness. I ordered two dozen glazed, and they must have a special (one free donut per dozen) so they gave me two free additional donuts of my choice. Since they were for my students, I decided to stick with glazed and not go crazy (five year olds can be quite picky!). When they gave me the boxes, they were steaming hot so I knew the donuts must've just been made which made my drive to work all the more difficult. Do you know how incredibly hard it is to sit in a car with two dozen freshly baked donuts next to you without taking a bite of one? I don't think my car has ever smelled that good ever. Ever. So once I brought the donuts to school and gave them to my students, there were enough left over to share with some teachers so I split one with my coworker and it honestly might have been one of the best glazed donuts I've had in my entire life. Like, if I could eat an entire box without gaining any weight I would eat the entire box within a matter seconds. That good. And obviously my students loved them as well! Bakers Dozen is a solid old school donut shop. It's been in operation in the location since 1993 but the location has been a donut shop most of my life. The donuts are always fresh and nice and yeasty. If the donuts are iced, they aren't usually glazed which I appreciate. Love their fun flavors and that they give back to the community. Their donut holes are completely addictive and if near me will be ravenously consumed in the style of cookie monster. Even when the shop is busy the staff is on the hustle to get everyone moving. This past Sunday my friend and I went on a hunt to find New Orleans' best glazed donut. We went to Bakers Dozen, Blue Dot, Shipley's, Tastee, On Faith, City Donuts, District, Buttermilk, and Terrytown Cafe. Of all of these donut shops, Bakers Dozen won out (Terrytown came in second). So with that being said, I can speak on behalf of Baker's Dozen's glazed donut - it has a perfect consistency, great glaze, you could taste the perfect amount of yeasty-ness. I will go back for this donut again and again and again. It's true! These donuts are soft, fresh, not too yeasty, and addicting! When I got in there was a line of 3 ahead and more ladies joined to help out - friendly and efficient! Didn't want to be greedy so I got the King Cake donut and a dozen holes. Love the bags so cute! Couldn't resist while driving and I snuck in a hole. Whoa so light, fluffy, cute, and a pretty good amount of just right sweetness. The glaze isn't too sugary where it may fall out in clumps but small flakes. King Cake donut was great! Original dipped in glaze and with the tradition colored sugars. It was light and airy and just NOM NOM NOM. Definitely a treat while I'm home for a few days from California - getting home feeling with deliciousness without wasting an entire king cake purchase. Staff is usually always present and plentiful to help the busy hours that they are open. Everyone is always nice and patient. They offer various other donuts which you can find on the shelves when you walk in. Depending on the holiday, they will almost always have a special donut for that holiday. Each dozen of donuts you purchase, you get a complimentary donut of your choosing, but not the specialty ones. There are many options to choose from, so you should not have any difficulty selecting what you want for free! The shop is always clean and gives you an old school diner feel as there are bar stools by the counter if you want to sit and have a donut and coffee. This place is always busy, but not busy enough to where you won't be in there for longer than 5 minutes. Omg omg omg! I can't believe it took me a year to finally make it to this place! It's kinda out of the way for me and wish they had a location closer towards EJGH! They would make a killing there with all the medical staff! Hint hint! I love their donut holes! That's about the only thing I get! It's soooo soft and just the right amount of sweetness and fluff! Tried to stop at Cafe Dumonde for benignes but the road work around the place was screwed up. Nix that plan. Headed out of town and yelped a donut place called Bakers Dozen. Small place, clean, friendly staff and great service. There was a line inside and while we waited (only about 5 minutes) donuts were disappearing as fast as a blink of a eye. People were buying everything 1-2-3 dozen at a time. Luckily, they were bringing trays out as they disappeared. We got 1/2 dozen mixed donuts and two apple fritters. My wife got a hot jelly donut straight from the kitchen frier. She said it was the best donut she has ever eaten. My apple fritter was excellent as well. Next time skip Cafe Dumonde and come here. Bakers Dozen is an amazing donut shop on Jefferson Hwy. I stopped by on national donut day and got 3 dozen of their special Julian donuts, which 100% of profits went towards Julian's cancer treatments. They were as cute as they were tasty. Two dozen went to Ochsner for their cardiology fellows and nurses, and they absolutely loved them! One dozen went to my apartment building, and the donuts was gone before I had time to go get napkins. The tastiness speaks to the love that was put into these donuts. These delicious donuts are fluffy, light and delicious and whenever I go to a party or event and see that they are serving Baker's Dozen donuts, I know that I am definitely in for a treat. Yes, their store is located all the way out in Jefferson, but it is definitely worth the trip. Not only are the donuts delicious but the staff is amazingly friendly. Up until about a year ago, I always thought this place was out of business and just an empty building. Whenever I would drive by it was never open nor were any cars there. I would often see people with boxes from here at garage sales around the area though. Fleurty Girl kept promoting them too. I finally looked them up on Yelp and said well, no wonder! They are hardly open. They close at 11am everyday. I had read a lot of good things about the place and said sometime I'll have to try to stop there when they are open. This past weekend, I finally stopped in. However, they were about to close in ten minutes and there really wasn't a whole lot left to choose from. I picked one of their Spring Fling donuts and took it home. It was very good. It wasn't too greasy and it was very light and fluffy. The glaze had just the right amount of sweetness to it. Each single donut is a dollar a piece. It seems their boxes of donut holes are a popular choice. They seem to cater a lot to little kids too, as many of their donuts are cutely decorated with cartoon characters (as seen on the calendar of their website). My boyfriend comes often because it is close to his job, but I've never been since it's a little out of the way for me. These are HANDS DOWN the best donuts I've ever had. So I'll start here I've only been once... So far but that's going to change in a hurry Staff: extremely friendly even though they were busy and I had a 4 year old wanting to choose her own and they were patient enough. Place: looks like a typical donut/coffee place with one major difference... It's CLEAN! and very clean! I didn't feel gross leaving there and felt very comfortable eating there (I'm picky) I may have been lucky but the donuts were so fresh and mouth watering i could've eaten a whole dozen on my own.
