I love this yoga studio. It is beautiful, warm, inviting. I have taken classes from several of the instructors and definitely have my favorites (Brian - I love him. LOVE HIM!). I appreciate the fact that several instructors with a variety of styles are available to choose from, because not everyone gravitates toward the same style, obviously. Lots of classes, workshops, special events going on in this studio. Good stuff! I was a bit puzzled by another reviewer who gave a negative review due to Bala's lack of showers/changing area. Really? Are showers and changing areas in yoga studios all that common? I've visited several independent yoga studios and can't think of one that has provided showers or a changing area... hmmmmm... For me, the best yoga studio is the one that I can consistently get to within the constraints of my daily work/life routine and one that keeps it varied enough to hold my interest. For me, Bala Yoga fits the bill, and I'm happy to have a sustained 3-4 day a week practice again after a long hiatus. Funny thing about early morning classes -- every studio seems to assume that you want hot power yoga of one sort or another. Bala is no exception, but the heat is not as intense as many studios and the asana practice blends a reasonably paced Baptiste style vinyasa with more static poses that build strength and flexibility. Pros: Spacious and inviting studio. Early AM teachers (Brian and Danielle) keep it interesting, encourage personalization, and blend a good mix of thoughtfulness and physicalness. Friendly community of practitioners. Very convenient to my commute and family obligations. Cons: I'm not a fan of Baptiste style yoga -- too many chaturangas, and poses that focus primarily on shoulders and quads. No showers would be a con if my mom didn't live close by. If that changes, I'd have to switch to a studio with showers, as I head to work after. What would earn Bala 5 stars? More focus on core. Wall work, including inversion practice. Standing balance poses outside of flow sequence. read more

Awesome place to be for first timer. Took the Yin Class on Tuesday, relaxing yet full of sensation. The instructor is helpful, always there to assist in any ways. Classes are normally full, do come in early, make urself comfortable, mingle around great people. Check in was a breeze, all staff is generously helpful to get you right in. I was not a yoga person at all. Actually i used to make fun of yoga poses and the all holy yogi's. They seemed so ridiculous to me all the time... how does standing in mountain pose help you work out? well that was the ignorant version of me. Things in my life were getting a bit too hectic for me. I needed a change and thought, this place got such great reviews and it was so close to me I should just try one class. Life changer. I don't think i have been to a class yet that I didn't get a good quality work out. I am totally inflexible and thought that i was going to be a bit of an outcast. All the instructors are amazing. They really are there to support you at whatever stage you are in your practice. My first class was with lorraine. I love her. She is so positive and supportive at all times. Her energy is amazing - she just gives you a good vibe. All of the instructors are like this. I fell in love with it so much that now I am a proud monthly member. I did the new student special for $40 for the first month and it converted me into a believer. This is such a great retreat/escape from all the craziness of life. It really gets you centered and focused when things get hairy. I cannot believe I have gone this long without yoga. I feel lucky that this place is so close to me! I was really excited to see a yoga studio going in so close to where I live, and especially one that was more" warm" rather than hell-style hot. I was even more ecstatic when I saw their deal on groupon, so I bought that to give it a try before buying a package. Most of their teachers are great, they really help you find the correct poses by being hands on rather than just standing up front calling out poses. However, some teachers are better than others and it can be inconsistent. Some are super spiritual with chanting om and dropping complicated yoga words, while others focus more on the physical benefits and walk you through what each pose is doing. I'm definitely a fan of the latter, since I don't feel comfortable yelling oom 3 times in unison before and after class. They also don't have someone at the front desk all the time. They have their hours posted on the window, but most of the time there is a "be back soon" sign. And even then, sometimes they don't show up until 15 minutes after posted and start the class late. I've been late to work twice now because they started late and ran over time. Trust me, it's hard to relax and practice yoga when all you can think about is what time it is and if you're running late. And today the instructor didn't even show up. 6 students waited 15 minutes after class was supposed to start before we were informed that class was cancelled. They did give us a free class pass, which is really all they could do, but it's disappointing. I hope they work to make things more professional and organized, I would love to see them be successful. But I probably won't be investing in a long term package until I see some more consistency. read more

1 star for how cute the lobby and studio are, 1 star for the Yin Yoga class. I got the unlimited month and went a grand total of 4 times. I tried different classes and different instructors and the Yin was the only class I actually felt relaxed after (which is the point of Yin so that shouldn't be a surprise). I don't care how active a yoga class is, I still expect yoga to relax me by the end of the class. I don't like that this place doesn't put a focus on clearing your mind. I was never put into the right mindset to start my practice and it definitely was not reinforced throughout. A couple classes had us focus on breath for a couple minutes at the beginning but that was the only mention of breath throughout the whole class.... These classes are kind of just like "okay you made it to yoga class, good job, now do these random poses that barely flow into each other and then at the end we'll chill in savasana for maybe 30 seconds".....NOPE. Not the type of yoga I enjoy at all. Another thing I absolutely hated was that they do not air the room out before a class that's supposed to be unheated (ie. Slow Flow). There was clearly a high intensity class before and you could feel it when you walked in. The instructor never opened the doors to air it out so I sweat like crazy during SLOW FLOW. I don't care if I sweat, I like it. Just don't advertise the class as unheated if you're not going to adhere to it. If I had known I would've brought a damn towel. Don't come here if you enjoy yoga for its meditative and relaxing benefits, you will not find it at Bala Yoga. read more

I have been coming to Bala Yoga for 2 months, and I'm now a regular (i.e. 5-6 times a week). The front desk staff is always friendly and they greet me by name. Briel, Mel, and Jennifer always make me feel so welcome. All the instructors are super nice, and I like some styles more than others. Their class schedule offers something that works for anyone's schedule! I have been to their 6:15AM, 9:30AM, 4:30PM, 6:00PM, and 7:30PM class, based on what my own work schedule is for the day. The owner would open new classes if the demand was high enough. The room temperature is around 85F to 90F, during the winter it's very warm but not too hot. I haven't been here in the summer so will have to see how hot yoga feels when it's hot outside. Overall, it is a wonderful studio. My husband can attest to the fact that I am addicted to hot yoga because of Bala! read more

First time at Bala Yoga; first time trying yoga at all. My fiancée and I signed up for a two-hour fundamentals class; the instructor (Brian) struck a fantastic balance between positive encouragement and realism, pushing just hard enough. He structured the class perfectly - everyone kept moving with enough material so that nobody was left behind or bored while he gave individual feedback. It is true that the dressing room is small and that the bathrooms are shared, but these are tiny details compared with the amazing yoga experience you can have here. I had a friend in town who just started teaching Hatha Yoga back in the East Coast. When she came to visit, she asked if we could do a yoga class to "detox" from our 5 day long adventures which included lots if delicious meals and wine! I was totally up for it! I have been practicing Yoga off and on for the last couple of years and never found a style I liked. I also just started adding weight training to my fitness regime and thought yoga would compliment it after suffering constant DOMS after a hard workout. We dropped in for their Sunday Yin Yoga and I became hooked! Shortly after, I signed up for their $40 for 30 days deal and I was able to try out all the styles and time frames with various instructors. I started with the Level 1 Vinyasa Flow and found myself feeling rejuvenated and stronger after 2 weeks. This class is perfect for those new to Vinyasa Flow because the instructors take time to teach you proper body/spine alignment and even let us play around with inversions. After my trial was up I immediately started the monthly unlimited and have been practicing 6 times a week - mixing it up with Level 1, All Level, and Yin. The studio is beautiful and clean. Plenty of cubbies and hooks for your belongings. Water available (if you bring your own bottle) and coconut water/water bottles for sale if you forget. They also allow you to rent various high-end mats so you can test out the mats before committing to investing in one that fits you. There's also a boutique with adorable tops and bottoms. Parking isn't a problem because I use the free 2-hour deck across from the Starbucks which drops you right by the studio. The main thing I love the most about Bala is the amazing staff and instructors and students. There's such a positive vibe and students are always smiling and kind to each other. Going to a studio can be intimidating, but this place welcomes yogis of all levels and sizes. We are all here for one goal - to better out practice and leave with gratitude in our heart. In a world of constant competition, this is so comforting. You will find NO egos here. This is why I've stuck with Bala and continue to keep coming back! Thank you Bala for helping me discover an amazing way to stay limber and flexible. I have lost 10 lbs by adding Vinyasa to my workout. Try out Bala - you won't regret it. read more

This is the best yoga studio I have been to. I took a group on to try out this studio since my previous experience with yoga on the east side wasn't too good. I am a new mom with very little core strength. I wanted to go to a studio where I would be encouraged and given a supportive environment to bring my body back to shape. All the teachers at Bala yoga are very good not just with yoga skill but as a true teacher accepting and encouraging you at whatever level you are. I have never been sent back for being late, never frowned upon for taking a break, going into child pose. As a result I look forward to each class and actually saw myself get better within month. I have joined their monthly membership now and I am loving it. I would recommend Pams yin class and any class that Brian teaches. read more

After a year off from yoga, I feel so lucky to have a studio like Bala Yoga open so close to home. The instructors I've had the joy to practice with have been knowledgable and varied. I have been a member since it first opened in July 2010. I joined yoga for a myriad of reasons: pain relief from injuries, mind/body connection, stress reduction and simply how it makes me feel. I am happy to say that Bala has been able to help me reach all of my above goals and more. The instructors are highly educated, motivating/patient, personable, and give wonderful hands on instruction. Bala also offers a variety of classes. I'm NEW to yoga (unless you count 3 classes while in HS/college) and so sought out a studio. I've been wanting to try yoga as a weight lifting alternative, since that has really taken a toll on my muscles over time. Bala came highly reviewed from a friend. One major selling point for me was the TWO locations. One close to work, and one close to home, which made it a win win. I've really enjoyed my time at the studio so far, and their 30 for $35 deal they have online is really a great test-run of yoga (if you're new) and also Bala (if you're studio shopping). I don't doubt that I'll be signing up soon once my 30/35 expires. My favorite class has been with Laura. I love the Vinyasa flow. I would also love Bala to offer some more Hatha style yoga, because that's a nice environment to get the poses right as a beginner, but I'm pretty athletic so I've been catching on quick. And BTW, if you're new to yoga, prepare to be sore for DAYS after. #shoulders, augh. read more

Get there early if you have a specific spot you like- this place is a favorite in Juanita! :) I come here weekly and like it a lot. I bring my own cleaning wipes for the ground though; the instructors do not mop after classes and leave it up to the students to... which means it doesn't get done. Being new to the Yoga I was encouraged and supported a lot to try out the postures/asanas from the teachers unlike at other places where the teacher would simply ask you to sit down so the class is not disturbed. Returning to Bala after a year away was like returning to my first love, whom I once left, in search of greener (more conveniently-located) pastures, only to come back and realize how much I'd been missing! I was a member here for about a year when I lived in the Juanita area and LOVED all the instructors, the positive vibes, the heated room temp and the ambiance (plus being able to walk there!). We moved to Redmond for a year and I opted to try other closer studios during that time (and was disappointed). Then I recently moved again within 10 min of Bala in Kirkland and decided to come back. I do not regret it! For context, I primarily attend classes like slow flow, yin yoga, candlelight yin yoga, and the occasional power vinyasa - level 1. Their vast array of slower flow classes work very well for my goals and health needs, and therefore I can't really comment on more intense classes. For me, the slightly heated room temp is a big plus, as I have poor circulation and find the sweating to be a healthy detoxing-type release; it also gets me through the dreary rainy season here. When I've attended other studios that choose unheated rooms, I've always been cold and leave less refreshed (physically & mentally). I understand though that not everyone likes this approach. I also like that the instructors incorporate yoga philosophy into class (vs purely exercise / posture- oriented classes) but at the same time can be light-hearted and make things very accessible for people not familiar with the practice/philosophy. For instance, one instructor pointed out that when he invites you to say "om", they're not praying to a god, etc, etc and that it's totally optional...which I thought was very considerate for those who might come with certain concerns about the practice. You're definitely going to get the good stuff like "honor your body", "we're not here to judge ourselves or compare ourselves to others", "just notice what you're feeling without labels or judgments", and of course "the light in me honors and sees the light in you." So if you're wanting a strictly physical, push-your-body-to-the-limit type practice...I don't think Bala is your place. But if you like the idea of body-mind-spirit connection...acceptance, respect, allowing what is...then I think you'll love it. I also have to say that their yearly Thanksgiving Day (by-donation) class is AMAZING. The first year I attended I cried and laughed and felt so many incredible things. It was a beautiful way to start the morning and also felt great to give to a worthy cause. I highly recommend you try it! One other tip: plan to arrive 10-15 min early to ensure you find parking, can settle into your spot in class, and not feel too rushed. Thanks for being awesome, Bala!! It is a relatively small yoga studio in Kirkland Village. They don't have showers and very small changing space, but very nice floors and right heat/humidity. Best of all are the teachers and students! Very good and considerate crowd comes there to practice. Teachers are diverse and all great! They mostly teach vinyasa and yin yoga, no Bikram. I came to check this place out as a total beginner and purchased their Groupon. I have been to three classes and have loved them so far and can't wait for more. The only reason it has four stars is because I had one frustrating experience. I had checked the schedule for the day online and it listed a chakra melt with aromatherapy that sounded amazing so I scheduled my day around it and went. At the front desk I was told it was $35 because it was an event and not a class. I showed them the website I was looking at for all classes for the day and there was literally no distinguisher between what is a class and what is an event unless you go ahead and register online then you will discover the difference. This was a disappointing consumer experience. When I first signed up I had been educated that the Acro events are at another studio and cost extra so I felt I had an understanding that everything here was available to me. Besides that, the place feels clean and peaceful. read more
