Finding a classic car mechanic these days is really hard. Finding an experienced, passionate perfectionist who knows the work inside-and-out is the rarest of automotive repair jackpots. I was on the road, driving my just-purchased '54 Plymouth Belvedere along Route 66. The drive from Michigan to Montclair was riddled with breakdowns and patchwork repairs to keep her going. By the time California rolled beneath my wheels I needed myriad repairs all throughout the old girl. Until I discovered Darren and Kyle at Baldy's Classic Cars it was seeming like a real dumb idea to buy this old family favorite. Darren took on my case without delay. He quickly diagnosed needed repairs and recommended the best precautionary repairs and changes advised to avoid immanent breakdowns and safety hazards. After various standard repairs, rebuilt carburetor, new brakes, etc, and a complete electrical overhaul and voltage conversion ( 6v to 12v) my fabulous new old car runs like she just came off the assembly line. Took my '50 Ford woody to Baldy's after talking to Darren over the phone to feel them out. Shop is huge, clean, and had various projects, both local and headed to overseas customers. His wrench, Kyle, took the time to put my rod on the lift and walk me through everything. I used to work on old cars 25+ yrs ago but am now in my 70's and don't have the strength, knowledge or tools. With that background, you can't BS me. I'll understand all that's being discussed. He made a list of must do and can wait until later. Very professional, knowledgeable, capable, and informative. I can tell when my chain is getting yanked, nothing came close. They didn't try to jerk me around or raid my bank account. Old cars are a special breed, parts are getting hard to find, and competent, trustworthy mechanics even harder. No such worries at this shop. I inspected completed projects and was impressed with the variety and quality of work. I'm lucky I live close by. They are more than happy to take the time to answer any questions or concerns and will offer informed recommendations then let you decide what to do. I took my 1964 Chevelle to Baldy's to have all the electrical wiring done. The wiring looks great and works perfectly. It's tucked out of sight in the engine bay, everything was wrapped, and properly secured. They did such a good job with the electrical. I asked them to adjust my windows and install door poppers. I couldn't be more pleased with the job. Needless to say my car won't be going to any other shops. read more

First off Darren wanted weekly payments, OK fine I work and get paid by the month. Second- EVERYTHING his guys touched never got made "right" Darren always said bring it back I will make it right. NEVER ! :-( The seat were removed placed on their side and slid around on the floor. NEW SEATS Ruined ! The air conditioner Darren had installed, faulty switches and connections, Battery still goes dead. New pulleys and belts for Air Conditioner rub and break the belts. The hood and bumper were not adjusted and look like a Jr. high student did the adjustments. Never was I told the TCI front end would not accept the stock clutch Z bar. Darren installed a hydric Clutch that had to be pressed "thru" the firewall to disengage. Over all- DARREN YOU OWE ME A TOTAL REFUND. read more

Had my truck at Rodco in Riverside for two years getting a paint job that they would not finish unless I paid them more money. I gave them $40K up front . Moved the truck to Baldy's to finish the paint work, wire it, and assemble it. Darren told me it would be 3 to 6 months to put my truck back together. After a year I took the truck back in running condition but not finished. I had to pay the full bill to take my truck even though the work was not done. I had moved to Arizona and came back and brought the truck to our new home and finished getting the electric windows working, (they kept blowing the fuse) because of a grounded hot wire, window wipers rotated down not up and scratched the paint on the cowl and hood, tailgate hinges would not let the tailgate open (installed wrong), all the wheels were loose because they were not torqued and had mismatched lug nuts. The killer was no oil in the rear differential. I drove the truck 24 miles before it blew up, braking the drive line and transmission case. Would NOT recommend this shop at all. read more

I took my 67 mustang in for some work plus a front end alignment. I could go on about how the wiring harness along the firewall was routed between the throttle linkage and the firewall pinching me down to only having half throttle ,,or how he said I had routed my speedo cable wrong and had fixed it for me . Fixed it where they had run the cable hard up against the cylinder head and burned a hole through it. But the topper was the alignment. I got the car back , was 4 miles away from home. It is a 55 mile drive, the front end was shaking violently pulled over to find the left front wheel had 1 lug broke off and all 4 of the others ready to come off held on by a couple of threads. They had my car for nearly a year for a restoration. Complete engine rebuild, transmission, new disc brakes, body work, paint and much more. In the end my bill was well over 30k. Most of it was Mickey moused together and I had to bring it back several times, which pissed Darren the owner off. Would take weeks to get back each time. Sat in his paint shop for about 6 months, which came out good but his painter Frank isn't there anymore I'm pretty sure. My first week with the car completely done I took a road trip. The engine blew and left me stranded. When I tried to get him to fix it I was met with hostility and told my warranty expired. Keep in mind the warranty expired cause it was It was in His paint shop. He refused to do the repairs and in the end cost me another 5k to fix the engine and all his mistakes. He talks a good game, but is selective who he does good work for.
