I used to come here multiple times a week before I moved away but now that I moved back home I still find myself coming here multiple times a week! The food is always fresh and well prepared. I always get D7, which is the perfect amount of spice for me. The rice is really good not soft and mushy like some places. Not too sure why the reviews for this place aren't higher, but definitely give them a chance. Happy to be back to be a regular again! Bali Hai is the GOAT! If you don't like this place, it's cause you're making your bowl wrong! User error. It's Mongolian bbq and you fill your bowls with whatever meat and veggies you want. You also get to pick what kind of sauce and the level of spice you want. B10 all the way. It's something about the way each morsel of veggie and meat gets perfectly cooked and the incredible sauce it's mixed with that makes this place different than the rest! The fried rice is the perfect accompaniment to the meat and veggies. We're long time lovers of this establishment. Definitely try it out and don't be shy with adding your veggies in! read more

My family decided to try something different this evening, and choosing your own meal seemed like a fun thing to try. Upon entering the restaurant, we noticed it was clean, the hostess was extremely nice and knowledgeable, and the small and limited ingredient section looked fairly clean as well. This is where anything I have nice to say ends. There is no ambience whatsoever. Not even background music playing. As we awaited our food, we noticed everybody was eating out of takeout containers. I guess the concept of an actual dish is lost on this establishment. We eventually received our food, along with some beautiful plastic utensils, and chopsticks. We all dug in to the most bland and uninspired food I've ever had the misfortune of tasting in my entire life. I ordered mine for a spice level of three, which I was told would be reasonably hot without melting your face. The food was completely bland and flavorless. The fried rice was simply brown with some kind of oily substance. None of the meat nor vegetables absorbed any of the flavor. The sauce did not stick to the food at all. To say we were underwhelmed would be the understatement of the year. I choked it down so that I didn't feel any worse about wasting my $46 on three meals. If you are looking for subpar Asian food, try the food court at the mall, at least it tastes like something. I love Mongolian food and we've been visiting Bali Hai for a few years now. We used to go to the one in Garner so I'm glad we have this one near our house now. If you're not familiar with the style, here's how it works: they will ask you what kind of sauce you want (spicy or non spice, sweet and sour, combination or curry), and what kind of rice you want or if you want noodles instead. They will give you the paper with your name and sauce/rice choice and you just put it on the tray. Take one or two (or more) bowls and then add whatever you want in it form the buffet and take it to the guy that will cook your food on a flat grill. The buffet: they have three types of meat: beef, Turkey and pork. You can mix and match and add as much as you want because you will pay by weight. They also have lots of veggies options like onions, zucchini, carrots, green onions, bens sprouts and others. The food is very good! I usually pick the B spicy sauce level 3 (you can choose from 1-10) and my husband likes the Q house sauce + E Curry together. Their fried rice is delicious! You can either eat there or take it home. No matter which one you choose, your food will come in a box already with plastic silverware or chpps Just a few cons: - they don't give you free water, they only have bottled water or soft drinks. - They add so much rice to your food that you can't eat everything. You don't get to choose how much rice it will come with and remember that you pay by weight and they weight your food after adding the rice so you'll usually get over a pound of rice which is about $7.50 per lb. Unless you choose the no rice option, then you pay more per lbs. I wish I could choose how much rice I want. I love their fried rice, just don't need a whole pound of it. Overall the food is very good! We go back there once in a while. I recommend the fried rice and the house sauce. read more

I used to go to the one in Raleigh before it burned down, then the one in Durham before the pandemic. They were not much on atmosphere but the food and flavor was phenomenal. The process to order, get food, and pay was impressive. This place had pretty atmosphere but lacked on everything else. The food was bland, the service nonexistent, and no more fun food stacking as you pay by the pound... including rice. And you pay before you eat. No iced tea so we ordered water, they tried to sell me bottled water but I caught it and asked for tap. I got a strange look but they complied. What used to be a $10 meal per person with drinks is now $30 with tap water for 2. If it were as good as before it would be acceptable but no, I cannot recommend this anymore. It's very sad. Good for a quick bite and you pay by the pound. Service is ok and the ambiance is a little dreary. You do get to watch the food be cooked kind of like hibachi. The sauces are tasty. I have always been a fan of the original Bali Hai off Wake Forest Rd. in Raleigh, although the some original owners' still run the Durham location, it is too far for me. I have only been to this location a few times for take-out since COVID-19 hit us. I appreciate the clean ingredient bar & nice customer service. However their rice is overly dried and it sucks that if you ask for rice, they will pack a ton of it in your box to add more weight --you pay by the pound. I generally get 2 bowls + 2 separate entrees every time and would spend 28-30 bucks for two people. I usually like to save the leftover food for the next day, but the rice turns into hard rice grains by the next morning. I would still recommend this place, but take caution on deciding if you want rice or not. Maybe I'll try to see if I can just get one scoop of rice instead of watching them pack 3-4 scoops in your tray from the kitchen. read more

For me, it works great. I did not have a problem with the spice level as did some other reviewers. I ordered the same as I did at Wake Forest Rd and the taste was similar. The food was never brilliant but it is consistent and reliable. It beats the heck out of nearly every Chinese-American take out in the area. Pro tip: They give you a LOT of rice and charge the same per pound price as the cooked food. Just ask for less rice. There is outside seating and gloves are provided for the (clean) food bar. I'll start by saying that I really used to enjoy this place in it's old location that burned a few years back. I have gone to the Strickland Road location twice now, but this will probably be my last visit. I went in today for lunch and dutifully loaded up 2 bowls of veggies/meat. Handed it to the person prepping the order for the cook and very clearly asked for 1/2 portion of rice. This was written on the ticket as well. After handing off your food, you have to wait a while until they cook it. I guess I should have waited and kept an eye on things, because when they called me to pick it up, it is placed in a takeout container (styrofoam clamshell) and then you weigh it to determine price. My price came out to $13.80 for 1.7 lbs of food. OK fine. The PROBLEM happened when I got to the table, opened the container, and realized that literally 50% to 70% of what was in the container was RICE! I went back to the checkout and showed them, enquiring as to whether this meets the standard for '1/2 portion of rice' and the guy was essentially just not too concerned. I really felt cheated at that point. What I expected was to remove 1/2 the rice, re-weigh, and get a refund for the difference, but they indicated that they 'could not do that'. I'll finish by saying that the food was good, but I threw away more than half of the rice, and it just was not even close to worth the cost! I've attached a picture of the rice that was left. The entire bottom portion of the container was loaded with rice, and my meat/veggie stir fry fit into the small portion of the container at the top of the pic. So, going forward I refuse to pay $7.50/lb for a bunch of white rice. Not going to happen. Bali Hai may be 'calling', but it's far from my 'special island'. I can go to lots of other places where they will fix an order that was clearly served in error. I guess the lesson I learned here is to check what's in the container BEFORE I pay! read more

Love this place! I've been eating here every week since they opened. So glad they opened a location in Raleigh. Everyone has always been very kind and accommodating. Veggies and meats always look fresh and well stocked. If they run out of anything, you can just let the nice lady running the front know and she'll bring more out as your stacking your bowls. If you're use to the old Bali Hai that was on Wake forest, you may want to kick up your spice level here. I use to get d-6 there, but at this location I get d-8. They don't have table service, but you can grab your box after paying and eat at one of the tables. One great thing about Bali Hai is the left overs taste just as good the next day! Price is great! I'll start with the good stuff, the girl who greeted me was extremely nice and welcoming and the restaurant was very clean (it was also completely empty at lunch time which probably should've been my first clue). They had very VERY few options on the bar, no mushrooms, no rice dumplings, no sesame seeds, very few veggies, and only 3 meats (shaved beef, turkey and pork). It was a bummer that you couldn't add your own seasoning or sauces. I asked for both house and spicy sauce to be added to mine, the "spicy sauce" was cayenne pepper powder added from a bulk label container, not sauce. I asked if they had white or ginger sauce and was told no but I could go next door to rock and roll and purchase cups of sauce from them I also find it irritating that if you have to pay for something based on weight that you can't choose the amount of something you get- for example the noodles we preportioned out on the buffet in plastic wrap and the rice was added in a back room but then you have to pay based on weight you didn't determine. Also there were signs all around saying you could add other proteins (crab, shrimp, scallops etc) to your meal but when I asked the guy cooking the food he simply said "we don't have any" so basically I got a sparse amount of vegetables for no reason because had I known all this prior I would've just left. I feel frustrated that I ended up paying for bland undercooked veggies I ended up tossing away. Wouldn't go back. read more

Staff was terrible and definitely did not want to be there. Will never be back and everyone should not even try. My fault for going since the place was completely empty at 7pm! Love this place! Food is awesome, the checkout people are very nice and will walk you through the steps if you haven't been before. Me and my family come here at least 3 times a month and love it every time! Cook is always good, I get the fried rice and they give you plenty. The people complaining about the rice being added to the price can take my two dollars, it's not a big deal. My husband went for lunch and for one person it cost 25 dollars! They used to charge per bowl with the rice separate and it was very affordable. Now they charge per pound including the rice and the price has skyrocketed. Very overpriced for the quality of the meat. They charge around $7/lb and that INCLUDES the weight of the rice, which you DON'T have a way of telling how much rice you (don't) want. Basically, they stuff about a pound of rice in there to double the charge. Also, the lady who works there has a nasty attitude; when I paid for my bill, she didn't show a receipt of what she was charging. Everything was super shady. My daughter-in-law was so excited when she saw they were in North Raleigh after growing up going to their old location that had burned down a few years ago. What a disappointment it was. I don't know if the lady standing there was having a bad day or just expected us too know how things worked but she was completely helpless. Then the food bar - there wasn't even a few basics on it like chicken and broccoli. The meat options were shaved beef, shaved pork, and what looked like Budding turkey lunch meat cut into triangles. There were about 6 pre-made sauce options that they added to our food in the back and a sign that read for an additional $2.50 per item (which they also add in the back) you could add shrimp, lamb, crabstick, and a few other items. When the food was done, we got called up to the register to pay. They charge by the pound so you are clueless on what you are going to pay until she tells you your magic number, which maybe for some is okay, but I find it off-putting. We carry our food back to the table (they put it in to-go containers) and opened it up. It looked and smells HORRIBLE!! I can't speak for the taste because I couldn't eat it. We ended up packing it up and left for Crazy Fire Mongolian Grill right up the road. What a different experience there. We were kindly greeted, offered drinks (which we never figured out drinks or were offered any at Bali-Hai) and then went up to the food bar. They had everything!!! Their bar has at least 4 times the options. For meat alone they had chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, ham and sausage plus a few other options I can't remember. For the sauce, you create your own from about 16 different options. Price is no surprise. $14.99 for 2 bowls of food and you can have all the white or brown rice you want. They don't serve burgers! Used to love this place when it was on Wake Forest Road and it even had a B rating. My coworkers and I went there every two weeks Through all the floods and closings.The location on Strickland Road has one girl working and two cooks for lunch. The girl working does nothing except take your order and call your name and take your bill. The food was not nearly as seasoned as it used to be and was served in a Styrofoam container. You were not allowed to order water even in a plastic cup if it had been available and had to pay for it In bottled form. It's a very nice location but the quality has gone to pot. From the frozen meat section- pork or whatever it was was slapped in a 3 inch pile of some solid frozen pork that had probably and under it when I lifted it up were some frozen pieces that had probably been shaved into curls the night before.
