I have been going to Bali Hai locations since 2012. This is insane how much of a change it has been. I went with some friends last night and it was just not at all the same. The place is not the restaurant I once knew. First off, the AC was off or not working because it was a sauna in there. Which because of that all the food was not cold at all at the bar, the turkey was probably 5% cooked by then. Also what is the point of saying you are a dine in restaurant when you now weigh the food regardless if you sit in or take out? Also not dine in because they don't even have drinks on tap, I had to ask for some waters on tap because everything is sold in the fridge by the bottle?! I don't know I just can't even recommend this to anyone anymore its a dang shame. It will be the last time I go to the Garner location. I feel like the Strickland Road location is gonna be the next one to go "cheap". Food was still good though nonetheless but you won't see me come through there to eat, which I live far from there so I like to sit down and dine in, it was a great experience back in the day. read more

Oh man, I should have read the reviews for this place, especially Daniel's review. I come here expecting your typical Mongolian grill experience, oh boy did we learn it was not so... first I saw the frozen shaved meat, with no indication on what it was. I was hoping for tofu and shrimp or fish, well I couldn't just get that and add it to my bowl, it's a whole complexity that doesn't need to exist, also I am charged extra for it. They were out of tofu, calimari and scallops. I could only get lil cocktail/salad shrimp and imitation crab(fish), which cost me $5 extra to get a mix of both. LoL The house sauce was like water, it didn't add to the flavor of the food. I even asked for extra, and it came back just 'wetter' and not anymore flavorful. I honestly, didn't like this place with its needless complexity, pointless extra charges on alternative protein options (get this... noodles are an extra add-on too!). I've been going to Bali Hai about 35 years. I think today was my last visit. They now put all food in to-go containers even if you are eating in. You pay when you pick up your to-go container. When I asked for water the woman, I won't call her a lady, very rudely told me she didn't have time to get water and I would need to buy a drink. Food was still great. Atmosphere and service left a lot to be desired. End of an era. I won't be back. I doubt they survive much longer. read more

Bali Hai used to be one of our favorites and we enjoyed going. You would pay per bowl 1-2-3 bowls, whatever you could pile on. It was pricey but it was worth it. During the shut down we got take out and paid crazy prices for the ability to take away our favorite food. It was weighed after rice was added to your container. Okay, whatever, pandemic prices. We finally went tonight and planned to eat in. Got our food in our bowls and had to figure out what to do since no one was helping. No one offered us drinks. We sat and thought we were eating in. We saw them putting our food in plastic containers. So we thought maybe they misunderstood that we were eating in. Nope, it's how they are doing it now. Everything is to go regardless if you eat in or not. They are still weighing food AFTER they add rice. I don't eat rice. The price to eat in is $8.50 per pound with rice. If you don't want rice it's $10.50 per pound. They use all disposable containers and utensil and bottles of water instead of cups of tap water. So we basically paid to eat in but it's to go. I literally got 1 bowl hardly piled high because I don't eat much and my meal was $22. Total for 4 people, 2 adults and 2 teens, $75. Unfortunately we won't be back. EVER!!! read more

I tried, in the past, getting the food without the rice and they do charge extra per pound if you ask for no rice. This is ridiculous, but theyve been doing this for years.. My problem is when they put huge amounts of rice to jack up my total that really pisses me off. It should be a serving but they have literally given me almost 1.5lb worth of rice several times and I only find out when I eat cause half my container is full of rice. Where is all the meat and vegetables I put on my tray??? The Strickland location is also very inconsistent. The spice number they ask you depends on the cook. There is no consistency what so ever. Sometimes my D5 tastes like D10 other times its bland and tastes like soy sauce. I'm not going to return to the Strickland location again. read more

My dad has been going to Bali Hai every week since 1987. Even when the Raleigh location burned down in a fire, he didn't let that stop him. He drove an additional 30 minutes just to eat at the Garner location. That's how good it is to him. For me, it all depends on what I get. ENTREE (2 bowls): I used to get B since that's what my dad always gets, but I've made the transition to D, which is both sweet and spicy. I don't like it too mild or too spicy, so D-7 is perfect for me. The only meat I get is turkey since it's nowhere near as chewy as the other meats (beef and pork), and I always fill one entire bowl with just turkey. For my second bowl, I fill half of it with veggies that I want to eat and the other half with more turkey. Their turkey goes well with the overall dish and how they make their food. I highly recommend the turkey here! The only downside is that the dish is drenched in sauce.. so stack some napkins under one side of your plate to gather the oily sauce on one side of your plate. Nonetheless, it's pretty good. 7/10 WORTH IT? Yes, as long as you know how to stuff your bowls, you will definitely get your money's worth. Come with an empty stomach! NOTE: The only downside is that you can't take your leftovers home.. I guess it's to deter you from overloading your plates, but it doesn't work and they end up wasting a lot of food. read more

I've never liked this place, even before the newest location but I went anyway. The food is good but they pile heavy, wet rice on your plate and then weigh it. Do you know how much cooked rice weighs? A lot and it's such a cheap thing to make yet they charge you by the ounce. The bill choked me! I won't be back! read more

Service: Decent enough. Once seated we were assigned a waitress. She handed over a slip to each of us which has our order details(Details include: The drink I ordered, the kind of rice I want (fried/brown), spice level range from 1-10, combination of sauces). This slip is used as a reference by the chef to prepare your meal and at the counter to bill the order. Taste: Fresh and good. Parking: Not an issue. You'll find plenty of spots. I watched a man place his to go order on their scale his bill was $32.00 he then asked for a box of extra rice the cashier got him a hamburger size take out box with rice and placed it on the scale his bill went to $38.00 !! $6.00 for a little box of rice !! After seeing this I told the cashier NO Rice she told me the price for my take out would go from $5.95 to $8.95 because I did not let her screw me for some rice !!! Well at that point I told her she could keep our order and we left. She ran out trying to apologize for trying to screw us !! The service is less than normal. No Manu when we walked in, no straws when we got the drinks. The food choices are limited. If you want the meat besides Beef, Pork, or Turkey, you have to pay extra. For example, Tofu is $1.5 extra. The soft drink is $1.95. (One Bowl $9 ish) It will be Very pricy if you would like to have whatever from Crazy Fire. The most disappointing thing is... the white rice is barely warm. It is a BIG "NO" for an Asian Restaurant!! The meat fell on the floor, NOBODY cleans it. I never got to experience the old Raleigh Bali hai before it went down... But I heard that it was better (in terms of flavor) than the Durham one. I have always loved the flavors of Bali hai but the atmosphere, cleanliness, and service of the Durham one are the reasons why I gave it 3 stars. This Bali hai fixed all the minor issues the Durham one has. First off, so much parking available! I really dislike searching long and hard for a parking spot, especially when hungry. I almost always had to circle the Durham location multiple times to find a parking space. Not here, we had like 60 to choose from haha Anyhow, this Bali hai is not fancy but it is clean and spacious! Even the decor is slightly upgraded compared to the Durham one. The waitress our group had was really friendly and took care of us very well despite us constantly asking for more water, chopsticks, rice- the whole shebang. Food was extremely flavorful! I asked for d8 and my dish definitely offered the spice that I asked for! Overall, I left well-pleased with all the delicious food I got to eat. Stacking is a skill I will continue to practice here! I've been a patron of Bali Hai for over 20 years mostly at the old restaurant on Wake Forest Rd prior to it burning down. The food and service was always great. Sometimes a long line at lunch but they got you in and out. Now since the pandemic, it's take out even if you eat in. It's not the same as it was. The price per pound is a bit expensive. I think they're hurting their business by charging every one like the this. I always enjoyed eating in the restaurant because the food was hotter and fresher than taking it home. I used to eat there at least once a week. Now maybe once a month. The restaurant is never busy now. I miss the lines. I miss eating at a table with the food served on a plate not a styrofoam take out container. I miss having a beer with my food. read more

This is a family owned business and we have been going to Bali for over 35 years. The atmosphere may not be as elegant as Kanki but the food is awesome. For those that think the "pay-per-pound" is a rip off, it's the smartest thing they've done. For years I watched people cram 2 bowls of food overflowing on the tray enough to feed a family of 5. Who's taking advantage of who here? In Raleigh you paid by the bowl but in Durham you paid by the pound. I'm assuming they did this to prevent college students nearby from ripping them off. After they reopened when Covid hit is when they went to the weight system. It's the best thing they did to hold those greedy customers accountable. Yes, it could be a bit more in price but because of all the greedy people, we are all having to suffer. read more

You know how Hollywood is all about a remake these days? That's how I feel the new Bali Hai is: more a remake of the old one than just a move down the road. It's okay, but not quite as good as the original. A co-worker and I went for lunch. It was a little busy and having been a couple times prior, my co-worker said the service could be a little slow so we might want to order as soon as possible. After waiting a few minutes for someone to seat us, we asked the lady seating us if we could go ahead and order. She was in a big hurry to get somewhere else and got almost hostile trying to get us to give her our order. After getting our order in and not losing any limbs to the lady taking it we headed off to fill our bowls. I'll give them points for the island style setup here versus the cafeteria line at the old Wake Forest Road location. Same assortment of meats and vegetables. Oh how I've missed some turkey triangles (aka turkitos). It didn't take too long to get our food after that. We both ordered a D7 with curry. Actually my co-worker ordered that and it was close enough to what I was going to get that I just got the same to avoid the wrath of the lady taking our order. What we got was not a D7 with curry, though. It wasn't bad per se, but there was not much spice and no curry flavor. Beyond the angry lady taking our order the service was friendly. Not very attentive, though. I never got a water refill even after the lady said she would be right back with one (that made me a little glad the food didn't have much spice to it). I think the lack of attentiveness came from the fact that it seemed like there wasn't a very well defined role/table assignment. For example, we saw one server seat folks at a table and then another seat different people at the same table while the previous ones were up filling their bowls. The food wasn't necessarily the flavor we ordered, but it was still good. I would like to try it at dinner when maybe it isn't so busy. So overall I would still go back, but sweet Bali Hai isn't quite the same as what it has been in the past. Hopefully this was just an off day. read more

Also the new location has a very comfortable and relaxing eating area. The restaurant was filling up quickly with happy patrons while we were there. Walked in and walked right out. We used to love the raleigh location but when we came here, they told us all the new rules. No take out box if you don't finish your food? That's insane. Bali Hai is back! The OG store was on wake forest Rd but unfortunately burned down, so this is the closest one (since I'm in Raleigh and the Durham one is a trek). Couldn't wait for them to finally open, get there early because the place gets crowded quick! Any Raleigh resident know of Bali hai and how much better it is than Crazy Fire the Mongolian knock off. People, please don't abuse the system and put too much in your food bowls than what you can eat. There is no doggy bags for leftovers, maybe that way they'll stop running out of supplies so quickly! Would recommend to anyone especially those who remember the Wake Forest Rd location. RIP! read more

As a group of college kids we went to the location in Raleigh (RIP); as adults we went to the one in Durham; and now I can say I've been to the Garner location as well. For this location there's really no charm. The Raleigh store was a true hole in the wall and the Durham one is clean and has a great location. But this place is in a strip mall with zero character. Getting to the food, this is a long established restaurant in Raleigh, originally on Wake Forest Road, this is a Mongolian concept, fresh Meats & Produce Raw Bar, place your selection in a bowl, one or more, select your cooking sauce/flavor, then the cooked meal, is delivered to your table. I enjoyed my meal, cooked perfectly, delivered steaming hot. My main dissatisfaction comes from the limited Protein selections, no Chicken, no Shrimp or Scallops unless you ask your Server and are willing to pay additional fee's. I went to this location two days in a row and I was so disappointed. Yesterday I went at 1:50 and was told they were closed. They had closed the grill and were turning away customers left and right. I couldn't even take it carry out. So I went back today at 1:30 got a seat, yes, tea watered down, no straw, never received a refill. Food was overcooked. It was evident that they were wanting us to leave because they made us pay before we were done, turned off the lights and would not refill another customers drink and said they poured all the tea out when I saw the tea was still sitting there on a tray. Lol. Where do I start. I am here in business and wanted to try it out. I needed it to go. So I grab my tray and walk to where the 3 yes 3 kinda frozen rolled up meats. Beef, pork and I had to ask what it was but it was turkey. You had to pay extra for turkey and little salad shrimp. You paid per pound that's fine. Then it's extra if you don't want rice. So I said fried rice and the dumped a healing bowl in my take out box. I just started laughing. The guy in the grill was cool as can be. The staff sat in the half lighten back area of the building. So if you think that this is a great grill you need to try out crazy fire. Multiple meats fresh no up charges for some small food lion salad shrimp or the most common meat eaten by literally every country on the planet chicken. It was funny but I was honestly pissed and disappointed when I saw what everyone gave a 4.2 rating. The guy on the grill great, staff was worse the a bitter greater at Walmart. Don't waste your money or time. Just the extra 10 min to crazy fire. 100 times better food and selection and the meat doesn't look like frozen rolled fingers. Good but nowhere near as good as they was. New rules. #1 Can not get take home left overs. Not even if you bring your own containers. Take out is charged by the pound. ( I am ok with this.) But if you do not want rice you will charged extra. No so good for the diabetic diners. I have been told by my wife that the combination sauce are not the same. I normally get the ginger sauce and It is just as I remember it. The best value for me is to get my food to go. Then there is no limit to the bowls as you are charged by weight. Poor lighting, being forced to wait in the entry way, no posted menu or prices, a bit overpriced once billed, poor flavor, unclean entryway and outdoor area, no explanation of what the sauces were or why, staff that didn't seem to act as a team, slow service, cavernous interior, and a franken-restaurant.
