My son does not like the duck sauce as it is different than a traditional American Chinese duck sauce that he is used to but I love it. Visited this restaurant again recently. And it was exactly the same food as I remember. And this is good because I grew up in Westerly where China Village was legendary. I also lived in Hope Valley, RI for 12 years and this is where we would go. This food is as close to CV as we are ever going to get. I believe they are related to the Chan family from Westerly, as well. That being said, what we have here is good old Cantonese/ American food that brings back memories of my youth. Egg rolls that are large and contain baby shrimp. Real egg foo young. Pu pu platter with the traditional sterno fire in the middle. Fried rice that is brown and filled with meats and bean sprouts. It almost imparts a roasty, nutty flavor. Orders are huge! Only drawback is that they are a bit pricey but given the economy lately, what isn't? We came for lunch as a party of 4. There is off street parking. The host was friendly, but our server seemed miserable until the end of our meal. It was not busy and there is a lot of seating. The water was good. The restaurant seemed clean enough. We ordered crab rangoon and beef teriyaki as appetizers and we all enjoyed them. None of us were impressed by our appetizers. I ordered the shrimp hunan, did not care for the veggies to much, but the shrimp was good. One of the entrees was orange chicken, which was chicken fingers sitting in a sauce, I have never seen it like that. I feel like there are several types of Chinese and / or Asian restaurants which all serve a different need or purpose. Sometimes you want both Chinese and Japanese offerings to enjoy both sushi and some sweet and sour chicken. Sometimes you want delicious, somewhat gluttonous, greasy food with an old school atmosphere, wontons and dipping sauce, tea, a Scorpion Bowl, and pu-pu platter. Bali Village fits the bill for the latter, for sure. The portions were huge, the prices were spot on, the scorpion bowl strong, and everyone had a ball with the pu pu platter. The atmosphere is cozy enough with a mostly red decor, and I love that they still have big booths instead of a super modern decor. It just all works in perfect harmony. I wouldn't go here for a date night, but it's a good time with the family and / or friends for sure. The service was friendly and prompt, and everything was delivered as promised. Not often can I say "I had the worst meal of my life" but today I can. The food was anything but fresh and gave my wife food poisoning and I felt slightly ill myself all night and into the next day. The server was not attentive in the least probably because she felt guilty delivering such garbage food and couldn't face us afterwards. It took a while to return Bali Village was a Chinese restaurant first that first opened in 1987 by seven brothers and sisters. It was quite popular not only because of the good food but simply because there isn't a lot in Hope Valley, Rhode Island Then in around 2007 Bali Village suddenly closed and a CVS drugstore appear in it's location. I heard that Bali was going to open "any day" in a new spot across the street. Well, any day turned into any week and then any month and finally any year now. I gave up any hope of Bali being back in Hope Valley. Then finally after two years of construction and putzing around Bali Village reopened. The new restaurant is rather inconspicuous from the street but the inside is spacious and very comfy. Fortunately the food of the new place is every bit as good as the old restaurant. Bali isn't a gourmet Chinese restaurant with lots of fancy and exotic dishes but they do have all the expected Chinese stuff as well as some of they own specialties. They don't have a buffet but the lunch specials are inexpensive and have huge portions. Guaranteed to fill up big appetites and big bellies. Of course being in Rhode Island they have seafood and most of the seafood menu seems to emphasize shrimp. The Har Ding is a cool combination of shrimp, pea pods, almonds and a bunch of other veggies. The Shrimp War Bar has shrimp, and straw mushrooms mixed in with other traditional Chinese veggies. Good stuff. Bali Village isn't fancy but it does have an interesting decor with some cool pictures and some interesting ceiling lights. Lots of booths or large tables, it's a nice place to bring a large group of people. Certainly not the most exotic or authentic Chinese restaurant in the state but lots of good food at really good prices. My family and I really enjoyed a recent dinner here. I was brought by locals who love the place and I was very happy with the food. And drink! Granted, the drink looked nothing like the picture, but it was very tasty and very strong. For food, I was especially impressed with the hot and sour soup, which is not the typical hot and sour soup, and the sesame chicken, which uses all white meat chicken breasts. Lots of bigger tables, so good for groups. I'll definitely go back when I'm around Hope Valley for dinner. read more

Great spot and some good food. The bar is busy and usually packed with locals, I usually get the chicken fingers, boneless spare ribs, and fried Wantons. The menu has a lot of great food selections and the drinks will definitely be extremely tasty. Grading on a curve on this one; 3 stars, in my 'Chinese Restaurants of Rhode Island' mental category. In NYC, this would struggle to reach a second star, but geography helps them. Never mind the idea that "Bali Village" is something people in China would scratch their heads over. On to the food - We had some Peking Dumplings, which were enormous fried doughy things that looked more like a deep-fried crescent roll than a true dumpling. They were fair, but waaaaayyy too much bread-like dough to gnaw through before reaching the bland meaty interior. Bland Meaty Interior - If I ever have a band, that's the name for it! Then we had some beef concoction called Gung Bo Gnow Ding which was decent. The beef wasn't bad but it was not very tender, and the spiciness was offset by some flavor that didn't mesh well. Vegetable fried rice was good, at least 50 pounds to an order. Oh and the fried wantons that come complimentary when you sit down were practically dripping grease. Ask for extra napkins. Bud Light was cold. Tea was hot. Waitress was not Chinese. I know it's probably "wrong" of me to want Chinese waitstaff in a Chinese restaurant, but damn it, I do! Somehow the food tastes better when it's ordered by pointing at something on the laminated plastic menu and having the waitress nod and wonder if you're going to get what you think you ordered, or something totally random. I want a touch of the exotic with my moo shoo, so Cindy from Chariho doesn't quite cut it for me. Ordered General Tso chicken and #39 for dinner for take out. Was interested in trying it for the first time since my wife says it's fantastic. I opened my GTC to find chicken patties in GTC sauce instead of the normal cubes and deep fried chicken. I've never seen a restaurant serve it like this and was very disappointed. Flavor and texture was not even close to the same. Didn't even finished it. My wife on the other hand thoroughly enjoyed her combo of chicken fingers, beef teriyaki, and crab Rangoon. Came in on a Saturday Night, parking lot was full but there were plenty of tables open and the three of us were seated right away. Initially the service was ok and we had menus & drinks quickly. We ordered some chicken wings in sauce for an appetizer and the order came out fast. The sauce was tasty but sticky as glue and hard to wipe off even with towelettes however the wings were good and the portion generous. We all ordered combo plates and they also came out quickly and were MASSIVE. The fried rice was not good, dry and tasteless, egg rolls doughy and if you are a big fan of huge chucks of celery, edible if doused with duck sauce, otherwise BAD. My wife and daughter both had chow mein on their combo plates and it was flavorless with so much corn starch or whatever they used as thickening agent that the gravy was like jelly while still warm and turned to rubber as it cooled, terrible. Up until this point, we were far from thrilled but in fairness, the food was reasonably priced, huge portions and the service while not attentive was adequate. Halfway through our meal, our waiter stopped coming to our table and the process of getting the check, paying the bill and getting our change back took nearly HALF AN HOUR! I travel for a living and eat out constantly, some of my children have been waiters and bar tenders and having worked in restaurants myself, I am in tune with how important tipping is. I honestly can't recall ever tipping less then 20% and usually over 20%. As I was WAITING and WAITING and WAITING, I was contemplating stiffing our waiter, in the end, I left slightly over 10% which was way more then deserved. If you want huge portions of tasteless slop this place is OK otherwise I can't recommend. I ordered over $60 worth of take-out food. I was given ONE brown bag. By comparison..."the other place" usually gives me a WHOLE BOX for a similar order of food. I ordered pupu platter for 4 and was possibly given the amount for only 2! I was given 3 very small little tubs of duck sauce. I asked the lady owner 3 TIMES for extra duck sauce and she would nod and say "yes...duck sauce" each time. The rice tasted bland. The shrimp were doughy as were the chicken fingers. Nothing tasted the same. It was if they didn't care anymore. I was so throughly disqusted with my experience. The surroundings were sufficient but my booth seat cushion was uncomfortable. Bali Village is by far the best Chinese food I have EVER had. My husband took me there on our first date 12 years ago and we have been going back time and time again ever since. Not only is the food phenomenal but the wait staff is wonderful and Friendly not to mention fast! We live about 40 minutes away from the restaurant and we have even been known to drive there just to get takeout! We have made believers out of all of our family and friends, they accommodate large parties, and they're open on holidays. They serve large portions so you can bring home lunch for the next day (or later that night!!) They have by far the best crab Rangoon and the general tsos is delicious! I recently purchased a combination to be exact a 41, and my boneless were chewy fat. I am very disappointed in the food quality. I've been a resident in the town for about 20 years. I've never experienced the food quality as low as it is now. Cold take out food they told me 15 minutes and it was approximately 8 and it was luke warm. I was expecting a nice lunch after a long stressful morning and day at work. I would rather go to stop and shop and get the microwave Chinese food. My mother worked at Bali Village for a near twenty years but ended up leaving due to medical reasons. As a child, my mom would usually bring me to work and have small combination plates with my younger brother while she waited on customers. Overall my experience has been fair and for the amount of food that you get; it is totally worth it. The location they are at now, is not the same place where they were a while ago. Due to the changing of cooks and employees I must admit that the food quality there has altered a bit, (maybe not for the better) but typically never fails to satiate anyone's appetite.
