BAM Rose Cinemas is a very cozy theater with comfortable seats, quality projection and audio and, most importantly, a great selection of creative, entertaining and educational films. I saw Boyhood and Eights Grade here. The best seats in the house are in the middle, not unlike most theaters, however due to the short and wide layout there are not as many available. At least this was true for the screens I experienced. There's a ton of great things to do and places to eat in the area so it's not hard to call this a destination cinema. read more

I came back after many years to see The Ballet Nacional de Cuba during the Si, Cuaba! festival. The theater is the right size for many works. I wish ABT will change its venue and give the winter season here. The transportation is superb to BAM. Very nice theater read more

What an awesome theater! So many of the theaters in Brooklyn are pretty gross and not managed very well. BAM Rose Cinemas is clean and offers a lot of comfort while you view you film. I've actually only been here twice but I will keep coming back! All I really have to say is get here early! We arrived at 1:40 for a 2pm show and it was already sold out. Granted it was a very popular film in the 1st 2 weeks of opening but films here sell out quickly because of the small theaters. We ended up buying tickets for the next show which was at 4:50. We were advised to return by 4:10 because the theater would be crowded. We entered at 4:15 and as suspected it was already very crowded. We had to sit in the last row. I'm assuming it's not that busy all the time but be prepared if you're seeing a "in demand" movie. Fortunately, there are lots of great restaurants and bars in the area. So if you have to wait around for a bit until another show you have a lot of options for food and drink nearby. read more

**BAMboo Review** BAM knows how to treat the kids right. Never been to one of their cinemas and yes, I know it's a shame but I've just attended the 17th Annual BAMboo festival. What a cordial yet ambitious gathering of kids, tots, and ghouls and unicorns galore. Numerous games with prizes whether you won or not. A bouncy house. And a DJ. A magician doing tricks and dressed up voluteers handing out treats. If you had no pail or bag, they provided that. They had a best costume contest. There was a hay baler/autumnal arrangement background that we loved and took many pics in front of. Caricature drawings, art stations, and just fun, fun, and happiness amongst kids. My 8 year old niece and I are super thankful and grateful for what BAM produces every year with BAMboo. If it's not the thing to do for you, let it be the thing to do before that thing you do on your next Halloween! read more

My favorite movie theatre in Brooklyn. What I love most about BAM is that their films are carefully curated. I could know nothing about a movie, show up to watch something and I'm guaranteed to like it. The theatre itself is beautiful and since it's sandwiched between Ft Greene and Slope, there are plenty of bars and restaurants to check out before or after your movie. The BAM cafe will host separate events like live bands, music and art gallery displays from time to time. It's also a nice place to catch a drink before a show at the Opera house. There is so much to do in this gem of a building. If you've never been you must check it out. read more

BAM cinema theater in Brooklyn it's the best in Brooklyn. Their films go from rare independent, underground, avant-garde, indie, documentaries to Oscar nominated Blockbusters. Their theaters sizes varies but they're always clean and what's best NO ADVERTISING while you wait for your film if you like to arrive early to grab good seats. The section where the cinemas are located within the Majestic building was originally a music hall and transformed into BAM Rose Cinemas in 1998. This is an absolute gem in the neighborhood! read more

Came here for the BAM hallaween event. Gave BaM the check in do to the great event for the children. They had candy coloring and games for the kids. It was an outside event. The best thing was the bouncy house for the kids. As my son loves those things. They had people dressed up and of course parents and kids where in there costumes. I was here for the Feist gig last night. I supposed because it's an Opera house, they are a bit stricter. You cannot bring drinks into the venue. You cannot use your cellphone during the show. The sound was surprisingly not that great. Feist sang that she didn't like that it was a seated show, so she asked everyone to come by the stage. My friend and I went down from the mezzanine & the sound was a little better. It really should have been louder. I was surprised they let everyone move up and even get up on the stage at the end. I guess that made up for the general stuffiness of the place. read more

You're bound to encounter two types of movie-viewing audiences in New York City: 1) The audience that brings outside food in styrofoam to-go containers into the theater, checks their phones throughout the movie, and then yells obnoxiously at the screen. 2) The audience that chuckles at every single nuanced tic from an actor, respectfully whispers about art and form and mise en scene to one another, and assumes they are entitled to both armrests. BAM Rose Cinemas falls under this second category. Their oft-impressive roster of indie flicks and foreign films is the reason so many pretentious liberal arts theorists flock here. And I will choose this breed of pretentious asshole over the obnoxious asshole any day. Hell, I'm probably one of these pretentious assholes myself. I mean, I'm mocking high-brow, amateur film critics by writing a self-referential Yelp review about them. So meta. Most cinemas in the city are like Target on Black Friday, just hordes of unruly citizens you want nothing to do with. By contrast, BAM is a stroll through Prospect Park, pockets of semi-pleasant citizens you, well, probably still want nothing to do with, but at least there's less of them. It's super clean, in fantastic condition, orderly (meaning the audio and video work for the entire running time of the film), and for the most part comfortable (so, the seats are a bit small). It feels like film class. With popcorn. While still being a legitimately great date spot. Unlike the chaos of most New York movie theaters, BAM Rose Cinemas is a place of civility. The suburbs don't score higher than the city in many categories, but film theaters are certainly one of them, at least for the casual movie-goer. And premier venues like BAM Rose Cinemas dial it back to that suburb speed (a compliment). If I see a movie playing at both BAM and someplace a fraction closer in proximity to my apartment, I will likely still choose BAM. Unless I'm being super lazy, but then that one's on me. read more

Stunning. Breathtaking architecture. Meticulously tiled outside, gorgeously arched inside--- like the ribs of a filigreed mermaid. Amazing special programs, this Saturday I went to see "Away We Go" and at the end Dave Eggers, Vendela Vida, and two lead actors came out to have a Q&A session. They have a great student discount for people 25 and under Monday-Thursday. They show mainstream films as well as essential anthology. So beautiful and majestic, I would watch all my movies here if I lived in the neighborhood! It's so special, the old Penn Station of movie theaters. I'm definitely going to go more often! read more

First of, it's gorgeous inside and out with refined columns, lofty ceilings, architectural moldings and lighting outside that attracts the eye. Where do I begin? I love BAM. I suppose that's a good start. Why do I love BAM? Because where else can I catch film, theatre, live music, festivals and grab some drinks? Love catching films here but you can just read my review of the Rose Cinemas if you want that. Lets talk about plays. I've seen Sam Mendez direct plays and Kevin Spacey star at them at the Harvey. That's pretty serious stuff for someone like me. (Even though I think A Beautiful Mind is overrated, they both have much much better work. It upsets me both are best known for that terrible terrible film) The Harvey Theater is a nice intimate place to catch a great play. Check the website often because you don't know what celebrity will decide, "Oh I want to do something cool and different. I'll perform in Brooklyn" (Lets be real, you know that's what they are thinking) They have the BAM film festival every June, which kicks ass. Rooftop screenings, directors Q and A, extended cuts, short films. It's a serious orgasm for film junkies. I plan to hit it up heavily again this year. This year I finally got to hit up the Crossing Brooklyn Ferry festival. In only its second year, it showed why it was such a hyped event and I hope this becomes a staple at BAM for years. I walk into BAM with a free beer sampling from Brooklyn Brewery. A sampling means, getting two samples and then going back on line. Walk on line, proceed to front, drink and repeat. Over and over again! Hey I needed to try them all................. a thousand times. They also were selling Brooklyn Local One, which by law I must get. I saw some bands I had never heard of before and rocked out to them. JAPANTHER FOR LIFE! Though I was waiting on Brooklyn's own TV on the Radio. Great performance which I would say capped off an excellent event. The BAM café is awesome. Great drinks and tasty brews, this is a hidden gem I honestly wasn't aware of before the event. It's gorgeous inside and a great place to catch a performance. Not to mention a dance party. Made tons of new friends at the event. The experience was the highlight of one of the best days of my life. Keep the Crossing Brooklyn Ferry going. So whatever the reason, BAM has something for you, trust me. read more

So.... 1. there's no huge stadium style seating 2. the snacks/food offered are nothing special 3. while i love convenience of buying tickets online, I'm not a fan of the $1.50 surcharge.Buying online reduces labor, why does it cost more ? Despite this i really enjoy watching movies here for two reasons: 1. They always have the movies that interest me. Usually 2 or 3 at the same time. 2. the audience. I've never encountered serial texters. constant chatterers or unruly kids here.This theater tends to attract an audience that seriously enjoys film.I'm far from a film aficionado, but appreciate an audience that is well mannered at the movies. I recently used my new BAM membership to get half off movie tickets ($7 - thanks ny id). The movie theater we went into (#3) had a good sized screen but we were forced to sit up front (too close for my liking) since the theater was packed (it's pretty small). I don't know if that's normally the case or the fact that we went on a saturday. You should note - the showtime of the movie is the actual time the movie starts, and not the time the preview starts. Previews run before the showtime so don't arrive 10 minutes late as you normally would with other movie theaters. read more

So much more than a movie theater! This place is great. The entire experience was great. Pre-ordered tickets online, and the "automated" kiosk, spit the tickets really fast, once I swiped the card that I used online. I notice and appreciate small details like that. The entrance way is grand, and had an art exhibit/sale featured. The counter people at the popcorn stand were friendly, fast and efficient. Nice bathrooms. The theater itself, institutes architectural elements of the original theater, framing the modern and wide screen. Comfortable seats, with about 30 long rows, with about 40 seats per row. Get here a little early, if you want a center seat, because the rows are singular. You also probably want to make sure you do your bathroom break before you sit down. Bam cinemas is the kind of place where you can catch a new release (the best new releases) or a classic any day of the week. My boyfriend brought me here on Valentine's day to see the 1938 movie Holiday with Katherine Hepburn. It was perfect!!! Conclusion: Great for dates and special occasions. The theater looks like small concert hall adding to the antique feel and transported me back to that time. A lot of the audience was dressed kind of odd. I wasn't sure if they were hipsters or if they confused valentine's day with Halloween and dressed up for the 60's. They looked cute though. Conclusion: Is not your usual movie theater. It's special. I learned what a repertoire is for the sake of this review and I think it's pretty cool they will feature a collection of films from a particular filmmaker, movie character (like Dracula) or film festival. That's great for those that are into film/ film history. Conclusion: Film majors, film fanatics, film lovers this is your home. Without a doubt one of my favorite places in NYC. read more

Architecturally, BAM is beautiful, inside and out. Modern yet classic. Spacious yet intimate. I've been to the BAM Cafe before to watch the free live performances but never made it to see a theater/dance one so I was excited to experience Water Stains on the Wall by Cloud Gate (a Taiwanese contemporary dance company) at the Howard Gilman Opera House section of BAM. When they have tickets for $20, you have to take advantage! First of all, what I love is that on the BAM website, you can choose a specific seat and they also provide approximate photo previews of the area your seat is in. How awesome is that? It means you and your friend(s) can buy tickets individually, arrange to sit in the same row and more or less know what the view will be like! After much hesitation on where to sit, my friend and I chose to sit in the Mezzanine Center section, Row J. We had a great view! I actually don't think you can have a bad seat in the house. The seats are comfortable but there isn't much leg room. Even for a petite person like me, I thought we were a little cramped. The bathroom was clean. Always a good sign. Conveniently close the Atlantic-Pacific Station/Atlantic Terminal/LIRR so you really have no excuse to make it down to Brooklyn for a show at BAM. No excuses! I'll definitely be back to watch more performances here! read more

One of the best places to see a movie in New York City. Beautiful architecture, great mix of indie, mainstream, and repertory films. They often do advance screenings of films with the director and/or stars present. These always sell out so you usually need to book in advance, but always worth checking out. They also have a deal with Sundance so they occasionally will present a few films in advance of their regular release in conjunction with the festival. The film pricing here is standard, but one nice thing is that they actually do have matinee pricing, which is a true rarity in the city. I think it is about $8 or so. A great space to see a film. If I lived in Brooklyn it would be my theater of choice. read more

I've always heard great things about B.A.M before even going there. I went there a couple of weeks ago to see the movie "sorry to bother you." The movie was weird, but I'm here to tell you about the theater and not that movie. When I got there all of the tickets were sold out. I didn't know you could purchase tickets on the B.A.M website. But overall, the theater was nice, the bathrooms were clean, and the staff did what they had to do. This theater is a little bit out of my way, but I properly would make the trip to see another film here if I had too. read more

So, I gave up Diet Coke on January 1, 2011. (Inside your head): "What the hell does that have to do with a crafty little cinema showing indie (and semi-indie) flicks in Brooklyn? Oh, right. Ok...so, my ONLY exception to this "no Diet Coke" law...is that I can enjoy an XL at movie theaters. Because as all of my current and former recovering DC addicts might know, movie theater bubbly fountain soda is quite possibly sent from God himself. He must like movies. So on a recent Sunday when faced with "what shall we do today?" my undercaffeinated, zero-carbonation little heart sung "LET'S SEE A MOVIEEEEEE!" I'm not so sly anymore, but my 4-eyed friend agreed due to lack of energy. Maybe he needed a DC too!? And thus we found ourselves wandering to BAM Rose Cinemas to catch Win/Win (Paul Giametti, wrestling, semi-drama...fits well for both of us - highly recommended!). Tucked inside the Brooklyn Academy of Music...just enter and head to your right, purchase your $12 (ouch) tickets, and then head over to concessions (MAIN EVENT) for a soda (eeeee!) and snacks. Decently priced, and they've got professional student like folks working as opposed to the sometimes disenchanted youth of most movie theaters. *matinees are $7.50. Ascend the stairs, and voila...4 well-suited theaters for viewing. You won't get the fancy stadium seating/VIP footrests, etc...but the chairs are comfortable enough and it is VERY clean. It's got some very nice architectural elements, and depending on which movie you see...you might just feel really above average in the intelligence department, just based on the company. Looking for a movie house or a Diet Coke? Well, this is a pretty grand place for both. It'll be part of my rotation when I need a fix...Or ya know, need to see a "film." read more

BAM Rose Cinemas - Performing Arts Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

In my little corner of the world (Bay Ridge, Brooklyn), we have one movie theater - the Alpine. Its not a great theater and there really isn't much I can say about it except that its in my neighborhood. They are trying, but they have a long way to go. If you wanted to use a Highlights Magazine reference, the Alpine is Goofus and the BAM Rose Cinemas is Gallant. While BAM isn't in Bay Ridge, its only a short R train ride to Pacific Street. And its worth every minute of that trip. BAM has beautiful theaters, plesant employees, great fountain sodas, decent popcorn and other assorted delicious treats. They also have discount shows before 5:00 p.m. ($7.50 a ticket instead of $12). I recently saw Black Swan at BAM and the theater, while full, did not feel cramped or crowded. I have also gone to film lectures here (Paul Thomas Anderson gave a Director's Talk) and that was a great time, too. I have to agree with other reviewers -- this is the theater to go to, not the Court Street UA, unless you like fights, stale popcorn, and dirty bathrooms. read more

All the hipsters there seemed to laugh at every single thing in the movie even if it wasn't funny. I guess it was trendy to laugh that night or something, that was pretty annoying. After getting my NYC ID card (if you dont have one get it. You can get 1 yr memberships to most NYC cultural institutions as well as movie discounts) I came here to get my free yr membership for the half price movie discount. This is the only place where you have to wait weeks to get your card and they wouldnt give me a temporary card so having made it here and wanting to see the movie playing on that day I stayed and waited for the box office to open only to find out there was a server issue and it wouldnt be playing. Pretty shabby first visit but undaunted I returned a few weeks later after receiving my membership card,this time to see The Martian. I was running a bit late so had to skip the concession but I see they have cookies from Baked so thats a big plus. I love the fact they did not show any commercials. Just a few trailers. Thats a big plus. Also after my talky crowd at AMC 34th last week the quiet and respectful crowd here was very much appreciated. The film itself was fantastic and that of course added to the enjoyment. The seating was not stadium but the theater wasnt packed so I had nobody in front of me so no problem there. All and all after my first rocky experience I will surely be seeing lots of movies here as it is only a few train stops away on the D,has well mannered crowds and half price is the right price. read more

The irony, I would come here 3x a month and then became a member and started to come like every other month! I love Bam, I do. It's close to my neighborhood, clean and still has the indie vibe. They show really amazing independent films, but sometimes the screenings are like at 2pm in the middle of the day...really? I know they try to get it all in, but who can see a movie at that time? Earlier in the year I saw a few really bad indie movies and wondered if the person in charge just lets anyone put on a movie, but it got better. I come for the q and a's afterwards, I just like questions I guess. Don't get the popcorn with the "butter", it's not real and might give you a headache. I used to get it all the time, but no more! The seats are quite the tight and yes, if it sounds like it's going to be a good film, it will be packed to capacity, so always plan ahead and come before the show starts. In all, it's great...although I noticed I was charged $8 for a movie instead of $7...but whatever, it's still worth it. read more

Saw 'The Wackness' here last night with ma girls. Clean, spacious, and though there wasn't 'staduim-style' seats, the 9:30 show had only 10 other people (yup, I counted) hence our view was completely unobstructed. No complaints here...I'll def come back. read more

Outside of the funky Cinerama in Seattle, this grand old theather in Fort Greene is my favorite place in the world to see a flick. That said, without any further adieu, here are my two best moments from BAM Rose Cinemas: * Punk rock legend John Doe, of the band X, played a free show at the upstairs cafe in between showings of the X documentary, "The Unheard Music," taking requests from appreciative fans. So fuckene cool. * During the premiere for "Away We Go," I arrived way late and had to step over all the VIPs (including writer Dave Eggers and lead actor John Krasinski of The Office) en route to my friend Q, who was sitting in the middle of the huge row. "Excuse me, pardon me, excuse me..." Hilarious. BAM's gotta be one of the coolest movie houses in America. read more

I had never seen a movie until I came here. The realism of the picture, the presence of the sound... I nearly had a fit. It provoked me to rent "DVD" films, but they could not compare to the gilt glory of the BAM rose cinemas. I went to see another moving picture show in Manhattan but the experience was so poor that I was compelled to throw down my hat and reproach the proprietor with claims on my behalf of skullduggery and lolligagging, plebian candy salesmen. When my landlord evicted me, I made BAM my home for six days. Not only did no one complain, but I managed to sustain myself quite happily on their nutrient-enriched candies. It turns out the joke was on me, because the darkness made photosynthesis difficult and I grew gravely ill. What I wrote above was a creation of my gigantic brain, but the sentiment remains. BAM shows great movies, even if the selections don't change as often as I'd like. Generally if there's a movie out that I want to see, it ends up -- at some point -- playing at this theater. Bonus points, too, for the cool concessions! In what other cinema can you mix 'n' match your own candy (BAM charges by the ounce)? I recommend a gummy worm/Swedish fish/chocolate-covered peanut combo. Yum. read more

Came here bursting with excitement to see Anthony Bourdain...left feeling like I got cheated. My tickets we're rather expensive, considering I was all the way at the top (nose bleed). Being a huge Bourdain fan, didnt mind spending the money. The problem was the sound system. If you're going to hear someone speak, isnt SOUND probably the #1 most important thing? I spent the entire time straining to hear Anthony speak. It was muffled and many times the people in the downstairs front row were laughing, meanwhile, the nose bleed people were left looking around saying "did you hear what he said???" The fact that I had to lean forward and strain to hear took away from the experience and made it stressful. It got to the point where I was giving the death stare to anyone who coughed. I love Anthony...but, what a let down, BAM. read more

I had high expectations when I went to see one of my favorite bands, The National, at BAM. That said, I was also a little afraid that balcony seats would be far and acoustically inferior. This review is long overdo. I love this movie theatre. The films skew on the art house side, or highly reviewed critical fare. The staff is super friendly and the prices are great 9.00 for a ticket instead of 14.00 is always a thrill. The theaters themselves are fairly small - sort of old school -no stadium seating here. Probably best of all is the crowd, quiet respectful and a nice ambience overall. Concession stand gets extra bonus points for the popcorn! definitely worth a trip wherever you are in the city. read more

I hate going to the movies these days. I love going to the movies. I love seeing interesting things projected on big screens with engaged audiences. I hate crying babies and morons with laser pointers and idiots who think they're in their living room or at a bar. I hate most theaters. BAM is different. The movies they show tend to attract better crowds, I guess? People aren't giant assholes. The films are good. The seats are mostly great. They aren't dicks about us smuggling in a metric assload of popcorn and two bottles of wine which we never do. The prices are totally reasonable if you're a BAM member. Leaving aside the fact that downtown Brooklyn-thanks to collusion between a succession of incompetent politicos and Ratner Inc-has become an open construction pit/poorly designed Rubex Cube, which detracts from the overall experience, BAM is still the foremost cultural-artistic institution in this borough. The Brooklyn Academy of Music is something we should all be proud of, and if given the opportunity, patronize. I still remember watching a video-opera created by Steve Reich at BAM many years ago, which was an indescribable experience. Even performances that I regretted partaking of, e.g. an interpretative dance piece that proceeded at a pace more glacial than a typical Stanley Kubrick film, were enhanced by the wonderful atmosphere. I can't recommend it highly enough. read more
