I think I've found my favorite Thai spot. I've only eaten-in once....my review for that is below. Since, I've ordered carry-out a couple times and it's always perfect. They're closed on Sundays which inevitably is the day I always seem to have a taste for Thai but I usually have to stave off my craving until Monday. That said, I've called before on Monday and no one answers...or they're too slammed to answer. If you do get through though, you're in for a treat. Last night we ordered the Pad Thai mild and the Panang Curry Medium. We also ordered a couple spring rolls and an order of their Siam Wings. Their spring rolls are some of the best I've had and their Thai dipping sauce is superb. The Siam Wings were really good when we dined-in but for take-out they're just not the same. I think I'd opt for a couple more spring rolls instead. Our Pad Thai was wonderful. The noodles were perfect and the flavors were outstanding. The Panang was my favorite with just the right amount of heat for a medium spiced dish. This spot comes highly recommended. I've only tried this once. Pros: The portions are huge and the employees are super fast and friendly. They also have plenty of vegetarian/vegan options. Cons: Compared to the other Thai restaurants in the area, the food just wasn't as great. They didn't offer a Curry Noodle dish at all, and the classic Pad See Ew wasn't memorable. If a friend wanted to go there, I wouldn't decline . . . but I also wouldn't bring the place up myself. read more

I am not big on cultural trappings, but this place is the dream that Detroit can some day be. While Detroit is a black city, most of the places I have reviewed are anything but. Oakland County is generally sheet white, but this gem in Ferndale had a completely mixed crowd. There were black people, Asian, white people, and I may have even seen a penguin in the corner. I cannot say that I have ever seen this kind of a uniform mix of people ever in Detroit all under one roof. I LOVE IT!!! I have tried 4 different thai places since moving to Clawson, looking for pad thai that is as good as Bangkok Cafe, and I've stopped trying. As with all of my reviews like this, I'm going to start with "so help me God, if you're looking for 'authentic', then leave the US and go to where that food comes from and shut up, already". I can't speak to "authentic", but I can speak to "OHMYGODGOODNESS" Came here for the first time, and my usual routine is to order "medium", just to check out the spice levels. Kinda glad I did, because the medium had a nice little kick to it. Not over the top, but definitely let you know that it's there...and that there's more waiting when you're ready. This has become a tradition, to celebrate my birthday lunch with my Brother, sister-in-law, nephew and neice at Bangkok Cafe. It's still my favorite Thai restaurant, I've had a love affair with this place for over 25yrs. However, this time I wasn't impressed with the Hot & Sour soup, it was lukewarm and bland. Everything else was Fabulous. The chicken satay was 4 whole chicken tenders, grilled and in a heavenly peanut sauce. Fresh rolls, chicken & veggie stir fry, shrimp fried rice, and drunken noodles were some of the items ordered, All delish. We all had some to take home with us. When I was working in Ferndale, Bangkok Cafe was my no fail, always satisfying, quick service, lunch option. Located on 9 mile in the Ferndale shopping district, this Thai restaurant has everything for a great dining experience. Consistently good, check, attentive, quick service, check, great portions at great prices, check. I've probably eaten at Bangkok Cafe more than 50 times in the last few years and I've never been disappointed. The Pad Thai is always flavorful, zesty. Oh and the spring rolls. Crunchy veggie roll up wonders you are! The menu offers a ton of authentic Thai dishes in which you can modify and add tofu, beef, chicken or seafood. So, there's a little bit for everyone. I give Bangkok Cafe 4 stars because I just know in my heart of hearts that somewhere (Thailand, maybe?) there is better Thai food.... That said: Bangkok is fast. You don't even have to call in your order. Whatever you order its done in a flash. The food is fresh! They understand the art of the spice scale. The Drunken Noodle dish is amazing and they make the best Pad Thai I have ever had. It's cheap too! I almost always order the same thing: Drunken Noodles, Pad Thai, Fresh Rolls and Tom Yam Guy soup.... all for about $24! Can't beat that! Now, I would say that atmosphere is something that is really important to me, but Bangkok Cafe gets a pass for sure on the atmosphere just because this is hands down my mom and my favorite Thai place in Michigan. My mom has been coming here since she moved to Michigan 20 years ago, and I have been coming regularly since about 2015. I LOVE their pad Thai especially- the noodles are cooked to perfection and the medium spicy is just the right amount of kick to the dish. We also get the shrimp fried rice also medium spicy, as well as the siam chicken for my sister. I think the menu is extensive and has something for everyone. I like how the shrimp in all of the dishes taste like they're pretty fresh (they have a good texture if you know what I mean). I also think the pricing is really good considering how much food you get. A perk is the location; Bangkok cafe is right in the heart of Ferdale, so you can walk to all of the cool shops if the weather is nice which my mom and I always do :) I will continue to come here when I'm home for vacation, and we will always be willing to drive 45 mins + to eat here! read more

Every now and then I'll drive by the Bangkok café and it makes my stomach very queasy. But 10 years ago that was my go to Thai place. The food was excellent. One day I went in as I said against the wall facing the chef walk and see him cooking the pool. All of a sudden while he was cooking someone's food he stopped put his hand up to his nose and begin to blow his nose right into his fingers. He then proceeded to wipe his hands on his apron and continue to cook the food. I was in shock couldn't believe it. The Gold Standard for Pad Thai This was the first place that I had Pad Thai which I thought was just awesome many years ago. The owners at the time were not charging sales tax. Opps. They did eventually correct that oversight. Now the cafe itself is nothing special and could be updated by one of those improvement shows. But this isn't about the decor it is about the food. Everyone I have ever dragged here has become a fan. My favorite is the Spicy/Hot Pad Thai with chicken and shrimp minus the green onions. My eyes break out in a sweat thinking about it. Everytime I try Pad Thai elsewhere it is a pale comparison. The place is packed at lunch but moves fast since the food is cooked super quick. The Bangkok Cafe in Ferndale is a dangerous place...dangerous because it's so close, it has ample parking in the middle of downtown Ferndale, and it's damn good. I've done carry-out via the BC on a couple of occasions and it's fantastic. Always timely (10 minutes) and always tasty. The standards like Pad Thai and Gang Gai are done well. in the end, the restaurant itself is Ferndale sized, which means it's perfect for a small group and good meal, but it's not going to lend itself to a larger group. However, do go...it's pleasant enough, and the staff always makes you feel at home. For me...this is a grab and go, and every bite is well enjoyed. The spring rolls are some of my favorite. I always buy a few hoping to have left-overs...it never happens! The spice is pretty on-par and what you'd expect. i wasn't surprised by my medium-plus, and wasn't let down by the hot. Bangkok Cafe is a nice little spot to have a good lunch. The booths near the door are certainly spacious and cute, but can get a bit cold on a snowy day. The staff is friendly and the service is quick, which are all great to have when seeking a nice lunch. I had the drunken noodle with chicken, my go-to Thai dish, and I was not disappointed. Can there be too many cashews in a Pad Cashew dish? Not in my book! Not only are you stunned by the sheer volume, but the size and quality of the cashews is fantastic. I return again and again because they know how to keep me coming back. I ask for no onion and mild and that's what I get. (I suspect that they actually get to know their regulars and tweak the order to suit that customers tastes.) The chicken for the dish is of good quality, fresh and plentiful. The brown sauce, thankfully, is not thickened with a starch powder and is seasoned right. The portions are plentiful and typically eaten in stages. The help is friendly, fast and efficient. I didn't give them 5 stars due to the one time I had carryout with a bonus of plastic wrapper in my meal. This was the only instance of a negative experience in many, many carryout orders. read more

I have been eating here and getting carry out for probably 10 years. The service is great and the food is even better. The parking situation is frustrating but this place is worth it. This is my favorite place to get pad Thai. I normally get chicken pad Thai medium and occasionally add shrimp. They are usually pretty generous with the amount of shrimp so if you are into seafood go for it! They have just the right amount of sauce. Every once in a while the cook gets a little heavy handed with the spice, but usually it's perfect. I like starting with an order of Siam wings(3wings) and adding the sweet and sour sauce it comes with on my pad Thai. I also suggest getting an order of shrimp chips and peanut sauce. They are so good to munch on while you wait for your food. I love the hot and sour here. Just keep in might it has a lot of mushrooms. This is the kind of place where I usually order the same thing, but my boyfriend has recently fallen in love with the chicken fried rice. They have large slices of onion and tomato in it and he loves it. It is very flavorful, but at a medium too spicy for me. I recently tried the pad see ew and was surprised they used the same thin rice noodles as the pad Thai. I'm sure the taste is the same but I prefer the wider noodles. They also cut up large slices of the broccoli stalk which I was not willing to eat. Overall it was still good but tasted rather different than other Thai places. read more

My boyfriend and I both got drunken noodles because it's our favorite and this place had great reviews. But if you're familiar with drunken noodle, you will not like this one. We went there for Saturday lunch. Ordered 2 Siam wings and one pad thai for 2 of us, still have some left over. The chicken wings were deep fried, then soaked in sweet and sour fish sauce. Very tasty. The pad Thai looked wet, but turned out to be good. With drinks and tips, the bill comes to about $20. Not bad. The restaurant was clean. Service was good. The waitress was really nice, and got us everything we asked for: fish sauce, red pepper, extra plate to share, extra peanut, etc. The location was ok. You have to park at the meters. $0.50 for 1 hour. You can use credit card to pay. Make sure to remember your spot number though. While the good was good, we both got a terrible headache after eating there, hence, we know they used lots of MSG in the food. I can tolerate, but my hubby was in pain the rest of the day. To me, it's like the McDonald's of Thai Food, (no offense to Mickey D's). Most of my Thai experience comes from California, so I don't know if the chefs here come from a different region than where the chefs in California come from, but everything was a little different. The pad see-ew used thin rice noodles, similar to fettucine, where in CA we get big fat wide rice noodles. The panang (which is a curry, I'm not sure what Pookie's on about), had a slightly different taste than I'm used to. I can't call it bad because bad panang is flavorless and watery. This had plenty of flavor, but there an underlying difference that I couldn't place, and unfortunately it was a little on the watery side. The tom yum gai was good, decent spice, fresh veggies, but it wasn't the best ever. Overall I'd give it a 3.5, and since the servers are so nice, the food comes out fast, and the price is nice, I'll round to 4. read more

Fantastic place to get your craving of Chk Pad Thai satisfied. I can only testify to their carry-out service as I have done this so many times the past year that they know exactly what I want every time I walk through the doors. They are so FAST in whipping up my favorite Pad Thai dish. LITERALLY. I walk in and walk up to the counter on a BUSY sat evening. I order my Pad Thai and I pay out. I'm about to sit down in the chair behind me when I hear, "PAD THAI READY".....whaaaaaa, awesome. They always put plenty of beansprouts and peanut crumbles which I love. By far the best Thai I've found in the area. Unfortunately the immediate Ferndale area also seems devoid of decent chinese, so Thai it is, when I feel like Asian take-out. Bangkok Cafe is not the fanciest place in the world. It's tiny and hot, but it's the best Thai food I've had. I almost always get carryout which is ready incredibly fast. It's reasonably priced, large portions, so there's almost always leftovers, which are just as good tomorrow. If you're looking for presentation, this is not the place for you, but if you're looking for damn good food, I highly recommend it. This is good, fast, cheap Thai food. The dishes aren't exactly "challenging", but they're satisfying and consistent. I work a couple miles from here, and we order lunch here about once a week. I can't believe it's taken me over a week to write this review. I stopped in for a bite the day after Tiger's opening day. Bangkok Cafe's Veggie Curry (w/ scallops) was very good. The spice levels were perfect & veggies were cooked but still had that 'snap'. The tofu plus the coconut curry paired really well and seemed to soak up a good portion of the sauce. I ended up getting take out here when my Royal Oak favorite Thai place was not open so I ordered Pad See Ew, Red Curry, and Pad Prik King. All of them were equally good although I still like my other Thai place better. The pad see ew was made with the same noodles as they use fro pad thai. I'm used to getting thicker flat noodles for pad see ew. Be aware of the different spice levels you can choose and choose carefully. I usually go medium plus, and my husband can usually handle a level below me. However, it was a little too hot for him. (Maybe he lost his edge on spicy food). My father in law had the red curry in mild and he liked his a lot. I didn't have any of his to try and he is also easily pleased with any food. My family has been coming here for 20 years & ever since I was a kid I've loved this place. Every Thai spot is different & the only curry I absolutely obsess over is the coconut curry here! I always order the #5 Pad Ped with shrimp mild, you cannot lose with this dish. It has a wonderful selection of veggies: green pepper, onion, bamboo shoots & your choice of protein. The portions are enough for you to have leftovers for lunch the next day. The spring rolls are great as well as the Siam wings. Their dipping sauce is very good. My favorite place for Thai food in Metro Detroit. I don't even look at the menu and order the Chicken and Shrimp Pad Thai every time. The service here is always very friendly, the food is cheaper than average and the amount of food is greater than any other place. So the official start to my reviews. I've gotta say this is a gem tucked away in Ferndale. Located right next to Schramm's Mead. It's layout is not your typical Thai place. People have plenty of room to come in and out of what looks like an assembly line of a kitchen. Restroom was serviceable. There is a steady flow of carry out orders but they are still attentive enough to the dine in customers. In regards to the actual food. I had the coconut soup & drunk noodles as my dinner. My favorite Thai food restaurant in fashionable Ferndale! Unpretentious Great food and service. Inexpensive. Love the Pad Thai and chicken wings. All the food taste great. Never had a bad meal. . Been there forever. Use to live close by and now every chance I get our family stops by there to eat. Some of the wait staff are still there probably going on 20 yrs! Love the place.
