Had eaten here a a couple of times before in the past, since my best friend lives in Ferndale, but went with another friend a while back and ordered my usual go to Pad Thai. It took a bit longer than usual, but then again it was a busy night. My friend had Pad Prik with beef and I got the shrimp Pad Thai. I ate less than half of my dish as it wasn't sitting well with me. I left the rest behind as it had left a bad taste in my mouth. Needless to say I was sick the rest of the night and it was something either with the shrimp being bad or eggs or the sprouts. I will not be back as my stomach feels awful when I think about how sick I got from the food last I was at this place. Maybe it was a fluke but I can't go back there. read more

I give this place a one star not because of their food but their customer service which in my opinion is equally important. They didn't put my spices in my carry out bag on more than one occasion. On Apr 3rd I went in to pick up a $38.00 order and ask if I could be accommodated an extra spice and I was told NO it's .50cents and then asked what about the times you didn't give it to me. The person in charge said "do you want it or not " My response was no I shouldn't have to pay for something you owe me. Mine you the spice is equal to a teaspoon in size.I spend money with this place on a continuous basis. Now I'm thinking they are deliberately leaving the spice out to make sure they have enough to make an extra .50cents on customers. Count your change this place is starting to act greedy. Been looking for a Thai place near the Detroit area. We drove by this place and a friend recommended it and my family decided to try it for lunch. My husband got the Drunken Noodles with beef at medium spice and I got the Pad Thai with chicken with no spice so I could share with my child. Right off the bat, the portions are huge! Each plate for like $10 it is totally worth it. DPad Thai is usually my go-to and it was alright at Bangkok Cafe. It was a little bland for my taste. I could taste all the flavors there it just wasn't elevated as much as I would like. I wonder if I got mild spice if that would have changed it at all. The Drunken Noodles on the other hand were really tasty! Medium spice def has a kick but not overwhelming! It was very flavorful. If I was to go back, even though Pad Thai is my fave Thai noodle dish, at Bangkok Cafe, I'd go with the Drunken Noodle between the two! read more

From what i remember, Bangkok Cafe is one of the 1st places to offer Thai food in the area. So many years later, it is still my favorite. I no longer live in the area, but this is 1 of my first stops when visiting. Be advised that this is a no frills restauraunt, loud with basic decor and uncomfortable seating. We've are vegetarian (not Vegan) and have been coming here for years. We always do carry out. We've tried many other Thai restaurants and many are very good but Bangkok Cafe has consistently great flavor and very reasonable price. In addition they are super fast. Usually the food is ready in 10 minutes so we just call it in, drive over, and pick it up. I don't think we've ever had it take more than 20 minutes and that is rare (if Ferndale is going crazy with some event). We enjoy the Tofu Pad Thai and the #7 vegetable curry. Also love the Fried Tofu side with its tasty sweet peanut green onion sauce. If you are looking for fancy, this will not be the place. The menu, while it has many choices, is classic simple Thai, never changes. But if you are looking for a very quick Thai meal that you can count on, this is the place. Went there after my friend recommended. He is a thai food junkie, so i knew it won't disappoint. My first impression - the place is old, small, smelly, kinda dirty and full of people either waiting for take out or squeezing on the dine in area. This first impression is telling me, yeah, I'm in the right place for good, authentic thai food! And we were not disappointed! Both got their noodle dishes (drunken and pad se'ewew) and they were delicious! Portions are good size, even though we were very hungry, we ended up with leftovers. I came on Wednesday afternoon and my order was placed and 10 minutes later I had my order to go in my hand!!! Huge portions, fresh ingredients, and just the right amount of spice. I ordered the red curry (#3) with chicken and what a great deal. $9 and came with white rice. If you want the combo it was $10 and came with soup and friend rice. This place had very good reviews so we gave it a try, we're out-of-towners. Being vegan and vegetarian we were able to order a couple of items off the menu, and they were excellent. Our friend who is not vegetarian had gotten there before us and finished his meal already and he gave us a tip - their dishes are really, really hot and spicy! So we ordered a four out of ten on the heat scale, and he was right! The waitress said that was a medium level, but boy was it HOT! My eyes were watering and nose running - but it was so good I couldn't stop eating. Huge heaping portion, enough to take home for a second meal. Yes, the decor of the place isn't high-class, but who the heck cares when the food is this good! I actually stumbled upon this place because I was trying to go to a different Bangkok, but realized I placed my order here and ended it up liking it even more. I have only had their shrimp fried rice which is a huge portion that can be eaten over days. I have also had their sizzling rice soup, chicken wings, fresh rolls, and spring roll. They have one phone and never answers the phone. I came up there around 8:34 and the door was closed. Penny came out and said the cooks were gone for today and they only have one phone line so they can't answer all the calls. As a business if you know this is an issue with people getting thru and trying to spend their money with your business why wouldn't you improve your phone system it's 2022. They was so rude Penny walked off and locked the door on me cause I advise I was going to do a review on this business. If you close at 9 and a customer walks in a 8:35 more order should be taken. Three stars continues. I had their drunken noodles for the first time tonight, and if I had to give them a letter grade, D+ would be it. While they fed me, they weren't very good, they were pretty clearly overdone, and the flavors just aren't there. Also: when you think "drunken noodles", you think *sauce*. These were so bereft of sauce it hurt. The noodles were too small, as well. Just not a satisfying dish at all. Look: stick with their Pad Thai and you should be good to go...they've got Pad Thai *down pat*. It's really, really good here. Other stuff? I wouldn't bother, honestly. I would give zero stars if I could. We've been faithful customers of Bangkok Cafe for almost 20 years, ever since we moved to Ferndale. It was always our go-to for carry out Thai food, even when the food started to decrease in quality several years ago - we stuck with it. Tonight will be the last time I ever give this place my money based on the experience I just had. I ordered shrimp Pad Thai and chicken Pad Ped over the phone while leaving work, and picked it up about 25 minutes later, after spending about 10 minutes looking for somewhere to park - which is a nightmare in Ferndale right now due to a large parking lot being closed off for development. When I got home and opened up our to-go boxes to plate up our dinner, I was totally grossed out by the shrimp Pad Thai- it was grey, watery, and looked like someone had already chewed it up and spat it out. Some of the shrimp didn't even look totally cooked through. And nary a crushed peanut was in sight. I tasted a bite and was even more grossed out by the taste - bad shrimp and bland everything else. I opened my husband's container to find they had sent me home not with the chicken Pad Ped that I had ordered, but with chicken Pad Thai, covered in peanuts. My husband can't eat peanuts so his dinner was totally shot as well. We called Bangkok Cafe to ask for a refund since a) they messed up our order and b) the food was awful - like borderline I'm-probably-going-to-get-food-poisoning awful. They basically argued with us and told us we ordered the food wrong, and said the only way they would give us a refund is if we brought the food back. Yeah - cuz I just worked a 12 hour day, am now in my pajamas and starving, and really want to repackage this nasty stuff and drive back downtown to search for a non-existent parking spot to let you give me $20 back? I think not. After arguing for a good 5 minutes, and then telling us this was their policy and they weren't going to refund our money, we simply gave up and told them we would call our credit card company and dispute the charges and they can deal with them. In a marketplace where customer service is key and you have to outshine your competition, Bangkok Cafe has failed miserably and as a result, lost two customers today. Maybe they should change their policy to be good to their customers and they might be able to stay in business. read more

What's up with all the good reviews about this place? Thai food is probably my....4th favorite kind of food to eat. (1, sushi, 2, vietnamese, 3 korean). Our foursome of friends stopped here last night because every single restaurant we went to had 1+ hour to wait. Ain't nobody gots tyme fo dat. Here's my impressions: Pros: +Satay chicken seriously super good. 4 huge pieces, really tender. But the sauce is kind of overwhelming. I'd order light sauce or sauce on the side next time. I could just eat 3 of these and call it a meal. +Nice staff. +Pad Thai decent. Cons: +Spring rolls tasteless. +Pad Prik King so, so salty. Seriously, it wasn't even good. We could barely eat it. +Beef too dry and chewy in my curry. Very unappetizing. +Chicken too dry and overcooked in my friend's dish. +Thai tea too sweet. I eat Thai food quite often, and after a while, I develop a sense of taste for certain foods and how it "should" taste. Granted, this is not shared by everyone, nor do I expect it to be, but if it's shared by the majority of the people I'm with I'd assume it is correct. This place is not good based on the dishes we tried. Maybe they're having an off day. Maybe that's just the way it is. I don't know, and I don't care to eat here again to find out. There is one big reason I come here and it's the Pad Thai! Anytime I am in Michigan I usually do not crave anything Asian b/c past experiences at other restaurants have been a complete fail! However this place has changed my mind. I knew about this place by word only, b/c my cousin always talks about this place whenever he goes back home to Michigan. After who knows how many years I finally get to try this place out. The pad thai is different than anywhere else, most pad thais I've had is very sweet and the filler ingredients feel out of place b/c they don't soak up the flavour of the sauce. Here however It's not sweet at all, it is a perfect blend of flavour and spice. The ingredients from the veggies, egg, chicken and shrimp is infused with the flavour of the sauce and makes every ingredient a match made in perfect harmony. The amount of noodles you get with the pad thai is more than enough for lunch and dinner. I've had other items here but nothing is more memorable then that pad thai. The only thing that would stop me from coming back is the seating. I'm the kind of person that likes my space, and if you're coming here, especially on a weekend, you will not have it. About 75% of the seating here is completely pushed together and cramped. You will more than likely be put elbow to elbow with someone else and that can be a deal breaker for me... If you're coming here for take-out, don't hesitate. If you're coming to dine in, attempt to get a booth. Otherwise, get ready to meet some new people and overhear some other people's conversations! I have not been here in years. Came here for lunch. The once pretty booths are old, beat up, dingy, and just not very clean. The whole place needs a good scrubbing. Everything old and dirty. It's just gross. Service: friendly, but no pride in her work. Food: chicken satay is freshly cooked, tender chicken, in a delicious peanut sauce. Home run. Tom yum soup: looks and tastes like its hot water with some spices, oil, and a few floating fresh mushrooms. Bad. Pad Thai: bland in a sweet watery sauce. Big hunks of overcooked scrambled eggs. I am not sure if it was due to the other positive reviews that raised my expectations, but I was disappointed. The two positives here were the price and how quickly our order was ready. The spring rolls in particular had very little flavor and did not have the light and crispy wrapping that should be expected. The sizzling rice soup was anything but, it very average and the vegetables in the soup did not seem very fresh. The pad see ewe was good, but not the wonderful, flavorful Thai I was expecting. It had broccoli in it, but some of it was a bit over cooked and oddly cut. The interior of the restaurant is odd. One side of the main room has wooden booths, the other side is an inexpensive takeout with formula tables. We ordered take out so I can not rate the service for eating in. Overall, there are better options in the Detroit/metro Detroit area. If you want something fast, cheap and are not overly picky about Thai, then you might be fine with Bangkok Cafe. read more

So stinking good!! So happy we've found this place. We've been searching for an authentic Thai restaurant. The portions are generous, especially the fried rice dishes. All the food is full of flavor and medium spice level was perfect for me with a little kick. I had the Pad Prik dish, most in our group got a fried rice dish of some sort. Three others ordered the Three's company (mixed reviews depending on personal flavor preferences). Also, Drunken Noodles with beef was ordered and it was very good. Also ordered the soup #1-great.
