This was pretty tasty! I ordered the signature Banh Canh cua, and I'd say this is one of the better places I've tried for Banh Canh. I really liked the small pile of crab at the top, and the soup was surprisingly mild yet savory. There's also the option to order fried donut to dip into the broth if you'd like.

I've been to this spot a handful of times now, and honestly, it's probably the best banh canh (Vietnamese udon style noodle soup) in the Bay Area. They really specialize in this dish, and it shows. I usually order the special banh canh, which comes loaded with pork shank, crab, and all the fixings. The broth is thick but incredibly well-seasoned. The noodles themselves are chewy yet silky. It's served with fish sauce, chili, and lime on the side, which lets you customize the flavor exactly how you like it. I also tried their coconut banh canh on my last visit, which had a subtle coconut flavor. It was different from the original but still really enjoyable. The ambiance is casual with plenty of seating. Every time I've come, it's never been too busy, and there's always been space available. Service is fast, efficient, and straight to the point. Overall, everything I've had here has been delicious. Next time I come, I'll probably try some of the appetizers.
Located in a small plaza is Banh Canh 3 Mien. The parking lot and spaces are small, it can be a pain to find parking, especially on the weekends. The restaurant is also small, I don't recommend for big groups. All their tables are meant to accommodate up to 4 people. We tried the: Banh Xeo Spring rolls (6.5/10) Love the idea, but the Banh Xeo was really soggy ): taste was okay. #4. BÁNH CANH TÔM NƯỚC DỪA (8/10) COCONUT UDON SOUP WITH SHRIMP CAKE #5. BÁNH CANH CUAĐẶC BIỆT (8/10) SPECIALTY UDON SOUP WITH CRAB, SHRIMP AND PORK The soups were really good. Loved the texture of the noodles, taste of the broth, and contents of the dish. I would recommend and come back.
THIS SPOT IS SOOO GOOD AND WORTH THE HYPE 1000%! Ordered the Banh Xeo Spring Rolls, #1 Banh Canh Nam Pho (spicy udon soup with shrimp cake and pork), #5 Banh Canh Cua Dac Biet (specialty udon soup with crab, shrimp, and pork) and a side order of the Gio Chao Quay (chinese donut). Total was about $52 before tip which was a fantastic amount of food for two people. Banh Xeo Spring Rolls were really good! The rice paper they use is insanely chewy in the best way and the flavor of the banh xeo is heavier on the coconut and tumeric which I appreciated. Fish sauce was good too. I'd get it again but keep in mind it's $12.95 for just two spring rolls. Eat them right when it gets to your table to enjoy it as crispy as possible! The noodles here are insanely chewy, not overcooked and soaks up the slightly thick broth so perfectly. The bowls also come out PIPING hot so you KNOW it was cooked fresh. The #1 Banh Canh Nam Pho (spicy udon soup with shrimp cake and pork) is ACTUALLY SPICY! This will most definitely have your nose running but in the best way possible. The shrimp cakes were super tender balls of shrimp that were fried golden on the outside but still had a nice plump texture on the inside. The #1 also comes with two pieces of large shrimp that were bouncy and so delicious! I'm not a fan of seafood so this bowl was perfect, I would ask for extra lemon next time though to try to mellow out the spiciness. The difference between the #5 Banh Canh Cua Dac Biet (specialty udon soup with crab, shrimp, and pork and the #6 Banh Canh 3 Mien is that the #6 is a larger portion of the #5. This most definitely has that crabby taste, but it isn't muddled whatsoever and was incorporated into the broth perfectly. This also has fish cakes inside! Definitely order a side of the Gio Chao Quay (chinese donuts), so you can let them get soggy in your soup to soak up all that delicious broth. Super clean inside, service was good. Super authentic food, already looking forward to my next visit!
This is the best spot in SJ for Banh Canh Cua. I definitely don't know many other spots for this dish, but after trying this spot, I don't think I even want to explore other options. Everything I need is right here. The tapioca noodles are the perfect texture, and the broth is thick, umami, and packed with a punch. They don't skimp on the protein either. The place is pretty hole-in-the-wall, so it's an IYKYK type of vibe. The service is cool, efficient, and typical of an Asian restaurants'. I've only ever tried these two items here but they're pretty fire: Banh Canh Cua - 9/10 - Heaven in a bowl. Definitely have to try if you never have! Banh Xeo Cuon - 8/10 - Banh Xeo rolled up in a spring roll. That's crazy. Very good but I can never finish it on top of my big bowl of banh canh lol. This is a must try restaurant if you're in SJ!
Best Banh Canh Cua in San Jose, I don't think any place comes down to the depth of flavor this broth as. Which is on par with Banh Canh I've had in OC. I tried another place and it didn't hit my cravings just like Banh Canh 3 Mien the regular portion for #5 is loaded with crab, pork, and shrimp. Just for a regular size they give a super hefty portion. I totally recommend you to come try this authentic Banh Canh restaurant.
Might have finally found the best banh canh! One where I don't have to doctor it up with anything. I got the #6 which is essentially the larger version of their #5; consisting of crab, shrimp, and pork. I loveee how it comes with pork hock because not many places offer that these days. It's a hefty bowl and they don't skimp you on any of the ingredients! The broth itself is extremely crabby and packed with umami; exactly how it should be. I also appreciated how they give you a side of lime + fish sauce and thai chilis without you having to ask. The thai chilis are actually spicy too!! We also got a side of their fried donut which was the only thing that could have used some improvement. It kind of tasted like it was baked or air fried instead of the usual greasy deep-fry that I'm used to and prefer, but at least it's healthier I guess. We came on a Saturday evening and was surprised to see that it wasn't busy at all. The parking lot had a ton of spaces as well. Service was decent and the ambiance is fitting for being a restaurant in Vietnam town.
I crave for this Banh Canh whenever I'm in town and it hits the spot every time! I don't eat pork so it's difficult to find a spot that has full flavor in their broth but thankfully they have their seafood option with lobster and fish cake! My food always comes out so quickly, piping hot and jam packed with flavor. Their service is friendly and accomodating as they're a neighborhood staple - they definitely have their regulars. I love supporting local - if you've never tried this Story road staple, definitely add it to your list! Be aware the parking lot gets busy so plan accordingly or come on a random weekday.
Was deathly craving banh canh, and this place did not disappoint. If you are looking for a hearty bowl of banh canh with lots of crab, def come here! Got the big bowl of banh canh 3 mien, def shareable between 2 people and you will leave very full. The noodles are the perfect chewy texture and they add a good portion of crab! I like my banh canh with the orange/red thicker soup, a more central style dish. this pic doesn't do it justice on just how big the bowl is! Ambiance is nice and restaurant has a good amount of tables, but parking may be hard during peak hours so it's best to come during off-peak hours. I can't wait to come back when I'm craving banh canh again!!
Heard Banh Canh 3 was great and an OG spot in SJ. I wanted something different from the typical pho and bbh. My fiancée was down to try it so that's where we decided on a gloomy Saturday afternoon. Small restaurant, no wait, honestly quite empty when we walked in so I was a bit nervous. We both ordered a Banh Canh Cua Dac Biet and damn. It was hella good! As a Chinese person, the Chinese donut was nothing like what I expected. The dough was more thick and crunchy versus Chinese donuts are more airy and crisp. Going to pass on it next time, definitely a rip. $3.50 for one serving and it's about half the serving of an actual traditional Chinese donut. There's surrounding businesses and the lot isn't large, so the parking was a bit annoying but it's not extremely bad. I'm willing to deal with the sacrifice, coming back for the noodles for sure.
I've been to Banh Canh 3 Mien a handful of times now and it has never disappointed. Fresh, quality banh canh where you can taste the love.. I will always be down to eat here!! I crave banh canh cua damn near every week, and while it doesn't taste like my mom's it still hits the spot every time. The service was quick, friendly, and the restaurant is clean. I like the interior and how they decorated! I always make sure to get the chinese donut with my banh canh cua. Just look at how much they load your bowl. Each bite is homey, comforting and so nourishing. I'd recommend to anyone who's feeling a bit homesick from their moms (like me ;-;) and just want a hearty meal. read more
What an annoying first dining experience! I was so excited to try this place, as banh canh (udon noodle soup) is one of my favorite soups. Also, it's hard to find a restaurant that specializes in only that. They were quite busy for lunch service but we were seated right away at the end table by the register. It's a small restaurant with close tables and not much of walking room. The entire meal service, at least for me, was frustrating. Our table was next to the wall where they had a plant decor with a branch sticking out towards the table and a large round ornament dangling from it. It was also where they kept their menus and had two strong fans aimed directly to my back. So, the fans were not just blowing directly on me but it would cause the menus to fall onto my head and branch to fly and hit me, too. And, they were constantly slamming the menus down because they were busy and trying to move fast, I guess. Can you imagine how trying to enjoy my meal turned out? You can barely catch anyone's attention in there to address the problem. We just had to rush and leave. Not only that, but the food delivered to the table was also wrong. The service was not friendly either. I had the banh canh cua dac biet that had one piece of shrimp, some crab meat, slices of pork, two pieces of what seemed like small pork knuckles and a few fish cake slices (I think? I ended up not trying them). Overall, it was ok. The consistency was nice, slightly thick but I wish the broth was more flavorful. It lacked the cua flavor. Unfortunately, my experience wasn't as great as others but hey, they can't always get everyone's vote, right? read more

Cute small restaurant that serves authentic noodle soup. This was my first time trying this style and it was great! We both got the #5 which is the crab, shrimp and pork noodle soup and it had a lot of meat! Super filling and I could not finish. Altogether a solid spot for some hot noodle soup! read more
Love this spot so much for banh canh! Number 6 banh canh 3 mien is number 5 but bigger size and perfect for sharing if you're thinking about ordering other items. I thought the portion was pretty good in terms of the protein they give. We had a good amount of crab meat, fish cake, pork, and shrimp. Already went to go back! Parking can be busy because it is a plaza with a couple restaurants but also people leave as they finish eating so it wasn't too bad either. read more

Loaded with crab meat in each bowl of crab udon, chewy and bouncy house made noodles with a thick soup base. Not for everyone but it's a good choice if you want to take a break from your typical pho and other viet noodle dishes! Also, don't eat too fast as sometimes, there might be small bits of crab shells. read more

Felt the need to update my review. The noodles came out completely overcooked- one of my biggest pet peeves, I requested a replacement of just the noodles (so as not to waste three bowls of soup and meat) and was given just enough for one bowl. The owner lady was unapologetic and only tried to defend their noodles. I've had these noodles many times and they were consistently chewy and tasty. Today they were actually inedible. Not sure what went wrong in the kitchen today. read more
Tried and true, after a couple other places- this will have to be my favorite for Banh Canh in SJ. They use actual crab, soup is always flavorful, good amount of toppings and noodles, Chinese donut is crispy and cut into bite size. Checks all the boxes. It's an Asian restaurant, so I'm not expecting customer service besides taking my order and giving me my food. read more

Banh Canh 3 Mien is on Google Maps' San Jose top 10 food spots to check out, we always eat at the Pho ga Nha next door, not knowing this noodle spot is so famous so I decided to give it a try. We ordered their most famous Banh Canh 3 Mien noodles and it is amazing! the soup is super flavorful and the noodles are very yummy, their service is also very fast, we only waited for 5 minutes and all the dishes were delivered. We are very happy about the food and services, adding this to our pocket list to come visit again. read more
Banh Canh is one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes and it's not a common to see it on a the menu, and if you do, it's not authentic. But this place specializes in banh canh and let me tell you, it's the best in the Bay Area. They have different kinds of banh canh but I come here for #5, Banh Canh Cua (crab). The broth is flavorful and thick, the noodles are thick but soft, and they do not skimp out on the meat (pork knuckles and pork slices) and crabmeat. A bowl will cost you about $25 but worth every penny. I also ordered the Chinese donut on the side to dip in the savory both :) read more
this place had solid banh canh. i was really craving hot soup and banh canh cua so i stopped by. i liked that they included a pork hock in the banh canh bc most places don't do that. there was a good amount of crab in the soup and thin slices of pork belly which was good since the thick cut pieces are too much sometimes. it also came with fish cake and shrimp. service was quick and inside is homey. read more

I drove by this restaurant all the time. Today, I finally had a chance to try it with my family. The restaurant is small but has a charming ambiance. I ordered the Banh Canh 3 Mien, which is a large bowl compared to the Banh Canh Cua Dac Biet. The Banh Canh has a delightful crab flavor, making it an absolute delight! Only one waitress working might delay to get your food , but it won't take more than 15 minutes. For three bowls, including tip total for lunch came to $80. It's the best deal. read more

Last day in San Jose, looking for a breakfast place. They open early around 9 am. It was highly recommended by a Vietnamese friend and did not disappoint. When we arrived, we were the first customer so have choice of seating. There were a number of choices and decided to try their special that has crab on it. The dish came out quickly. You can see the crab bits on top. Tasted the soup or gravy first and it was delicious!. In addition to crab, it also had shrimps and pork. The noodle is more like an udon... thicker. The combination works really well together. They also provide some lemon that added zest for taste and a side of fish sauce and chopped chili. I squeezed the lemon juice to the bowl and have the fish sauce and chili as I grab a spoonful of the soup noodle mixture. So good! It's like Filipino "Lomi" but has a different taste. Thinking about making me want to go back again! Staff was nice. Place was a little dark but we were early. Have the option of seating in a booth or table. You can see the kitchen behind the counter. read more

Banh Canh 3 Mien is a great hole in the wall that offers a dish that's honestly really hard to find in restaurants. We came here on a Wednesday night and got seated quickly and our food came out quickly. It's probably as close as I can get to homemade banh canh in the bay. The Banh Canh 3 Mien is HUGE and packed with toppings. The broth tastes super shrimp paste-y and was reminiscent of Bun Rieu. So impressed by the texture of the noodles and the amount of meat. My personal Favorite is the Banh Canh Tom Nuoc Dua, the soup is a savory coconut with the shrimp. So addictive to eat! I was really impressed with the com tam suong they gave two pieces of pork chop and the marinade was the perfect balance of lemon grass. Definitely recommend! They have their own parking lot which wasn't busy at the time we came. But I can see it getting packed in the weekends since there were other restaurants there. Overall I would come back, had a great experience with tasty food! read more

Banh Canh Ba Mien is a solid spot for comforting Vietnamese noodle soups with great flavor and generous portions. I tried the #6 Ba Mien Đặc Biệt and it truly lived up to its name--rich, savory broth loaded with a satisfying mix of meats and seafood. The new menu item, Bún Hà Nội, was also a pleasant surprise with its clean, herby flavors and perfectly cooked noodles. Both dishes were well-balanced and didn't feel overly heavy, which I appreciated. Everything tasted fresh, and the portions were definitely filling without being too much. The prices are affordable, especially considering the quality and variety you get. Service was quick and friendly, and the vibe felt casual but cared for. I'm disappointed with my visit. The food was fine, but the billing practices were sneaky. My party of 5 was not informed of a 2.6% credit card fee and an automatic 18% gratuity that was included in the total. So, I ended up adding on an additional 18% tip on top of the automatic gratuity. I feel very misled and taken advantage of, and I won't be returning. I hope others are aware of this so they don't also pay unnecessary tip. read more
This place is cute. All the dishes are clean and tasty. People here are so friendly and quick to respond. Their soup base it's not too spicy for the noodles. After having a bad banh canh experience at blue monkey, I decided to redeem my craving here. Food came out super fast, the workers are very nice. Broth is delicious here; the best banh canh I ever had. I personally didn't need the Chinese donut with my soup, but my bf said it's necessary LOL. They are super generous with the crab meat. This is a small restaurant across the street from the bustling Grand Century/Viet Town Plaza. Gives off a homey vibes the minute you walk in. I was feeling a little under the weather so I wanted a hot bowl of noodle soup and this place delivered. I ordered their banh canh dac biet (combo banh canh) and it came out in less than 5 mins. I saw a lot of people getting the Chinese donuts with it so I did too. I've had Chinese donuts before but this was my first time eating it together with the soup. By itself, the donut was really dense, almost felt like it's been sitting for a while. But with the soup, omg it was great!! I fell in love with the donut dipped in soup to soak up all the flavor of the broth. The broth! This was definitely one of the better places I've had banh canh at. The broth was amazing. Flavorful and plenty of meat to go around. Love the additional chili in fish sauce on the side. The only odd thing was the noodle had a strange after taste, almost like it was made with old oil and left a weird taste. read more
