Came by for lunch the other day and it was a tasty experience. Thu Bakery & Restaurant took over Hai Nam Restaurant. The interior has been refreshed and the menu features new items. The chef from Hai Nam is still in the back. Opted for the Bun Bo Hue and as others had mentioned, it had tons of meat, including a fish cake, beef shank, beef rib, and pork blood. There were no pig trotters. The broth was flavorful and the noodles were cooked to perfection. Ordered a side of fried dough sticks and they were ok. Initially, I was going to Dalat for their hu tieu dai, but my sister recommended going here and it definitely delivered. The broth is rich, and flavorful and the portions are generous with plenty of toppings. I love that they give you pork ribs in the broth! Service was also pretty solid. I especially enjoyed the strong Vietnamese coffee and the fried sesame bread--both were great additions to the meal. Their Vietnamese mini baguette is solid, but only have 1 kind. That said, the Hainan chicken was disappointing compared to what I remember from the previous owner. The chicken came out overcooked and lacked the firm, slightly chewy texture you'd expect from free-range chicken. It honestly tasted like it had been braised too long--almost like the kind of chicken typically used for congee. Having cooked free-range chicken myself, I know the texture it should have, and this missed the mark. The ginger fish sauce could also use some refinement--it leaned too heavily on vinegar and needed more ginger and a bit more sweetness for balance. The space itself is fairly small, with seating for around 20 people, though it seems like most customers order takeout. I'll definitely be back for the hu tieu, and I'm open to giving the Hainan chicken another shot since I really liked it under the previous owner. Solid place with tasty food!! They have a great selection of pate chaud, Gio chay quay & banh tieu that you can get to go as well. Would recommend asking them to help heat it up for tastier experience. They have great deals for them, even ones including drinks. Their bun Bo hue broth is pretty nice, and the sauce for their com ga hai nam is delicious too. Would definitely return for more. read more

Food (5 stars) + Hu Tieu Kho is amazing on all levels of freshness, quality ingredients, and portion! I prefer to order it dry with soup on the side. + 3 large shrimps! I'm talking about biggest I've ever seen served in Hu Tieu. + Mix of yellow and rice noodle hits all marks for my buds. They're also piping hot even a few minutes into my meal. + Thin slices of pork and pork roll give an amazing texture + Soup with bone doesn't look like much but if you're ever one of those people that wonder why your uncle or dad would naw on these bad boys you'll be doing the same thing when you're of age. I ate mine and my wife's share. Lots of meat left in them bones! + Condiments here add essential contrast to your dry noodles. A little spicy, sweet and lemongrass flavors. ~ Sesame donut is good. Bigger than I expected but hollow inside. They have a $7 coffee and donut special. Service/Ambiance (4.5 stars) + 1 lady took care of the whole front and bussed tables so I won't complain about my water not getting refilled + All around cleaner than other hole in the wall places I'm loving this place. I hope they keep up with the quality because this will be my local go to Hu Tieu spot. It's a couple dollars more than other local dry noodle places but I don't mind a little premium for such quality. Also this used to be a Vietnamese chicken restaurant. I was in rush so I called them ahead of time to place an order at 6:35 pm. I came at 7:00 pm and had to wait 25 minutes to get my order. Turned out that they DID NOT do my order until I came. So what was the point of me calling them to order ahead? I purposely ordered NO ONION because I CANNOT eat onion and they made my order full of onion. YAY. First review and meal of 2026! Thu Bakery is located in Paloma Plaza. It took over Hai Nam and is nicely renovated. The restaurant is clean, cozy and inviting. I dined here twice in one week because I enjoyed their noodles soo much. Service was quick and food came out quickly too. So far I've tried.. #27 HU TIEU DAI KHO $19.50 -chewy clear noodles, dry style with "thu special sauce." Comes with 2 jumbo shrimp, pork, squid, green onion, cilantro and garlic. I added a squeeze of lime, chili & pickled condiments and chinese celery. Everything was super fresh and tasted homemade! Really hit the spot. 5/5* I liked the condiments they provided on the table.. chili sate, pickled jalapeños and pickled radishes. Everything is made in-house. The pickled radishes had little bits of red chili peppers. Tasted similar to the "do chua" we eat in vietnamese sandwiches. This was a new condiment for me and I enjoyed it in my noodles! Apparently it's from the western region of Vietnam aka "mien tay." They also offer a whole section of chicken dishes, similar to the previous owner. Like pho ga, mi ga, mien ga, banh canh ga, chao ga, xoi / com ga and even whole chicken. I bought a few of their banh tieu (sesame donut) and gio chau quay (chinese donut sticks) when they had their promotion. Buy 3 get 1 free, at $2 a donut. They make THE BEST in SJ. So good that they even sell them to vietnamese fast food shops and markets. They also sell a few baked items and desserts that you can grab and go by the cashier. As a matter of fact, I have had bought 5 or 6 bowls in the last 30 days and it is still more cost effective than making bun bo hue at home. Although it hasn't stopped me from buying lemon grass and multiple pineapples and herbs to prepare for a long cooking session. After looking for homes, my customer and I have tried bun bo hue at three different locations: Huynh Bun Bo Dining has delicious Mi Quang but their BBH gave us both tummy aches. They don't have a lot of customers like Hue Restaurant. My customer ordered tai bo (raw beef) BBH. Yes, the meat was soft but I think raw slices of beef belong on top of a bowl of pho not bun bo hue. Hue is a busy restaurant across from Huynh Dining. They are the OG of Hue food at the Paloma Plaza. This is the second generation of banh beo makers from the original Bun Bo Hue Dong Ba (formally known as Bun Bo Hue) on Senter Road. Their BBH has a lot of annatto red coloring and tastes ok to me; I didn't see fireworks. Thu Bakery is a new restaurant that specializes in chicken just like the previous restaurant before it, Hai Nam. As a matter of fact, the previous owner is an older lady that still manages the kitchen in the back. She is the main chef. She used to work for Pho Ga Anh Nam and Bun Bo Hue Anh Nam (when Anh Tien and his mom owned both businesses). She was the original cook that made BBH for their restaurants. After her husband died, it was too much work for her to run the restaurant by herself. She sold the restaurant but stayed on to help the new owner. I am on a chicken strike and was a little disappointed to see that they removed all of the duck from their menu. Therefore, we decided to order bun bo hue for the meat. It did not disappoint. The meat was tasty and there was a rich aroma of lemon grass in both the broth and marinated meat. There were huge chunks of beef barely clinging on bones. We used two forks to tear off the meat from the bones. The blood chunk was big too. Their BBH would be a good representation of what you would eat at home if you knew how to cook BBH Saigon style. It was more on the sweet side. We dipped fresh Chinese doughnuts in the broth. I am so glad that we ate here instead of Chick-Fil-A (or is it Chic-Fil-A, depending on what time you are in right now). I've been here twice to try most of the items on the menu. Overall, the food is good and consistent. The space is clean, neat, and comfortable. The condiments are also well-prepared and nicely arranged. I highly recommend the chicken rice and the hủ tiếu -- both were flavorful and satisfying. Next time, I'll definitely try the "hủ tiếu xào nhật". I'm giving this place 5 stars especially because of the young lady server. She was incredibly sweet, gentle, and friendly. Flavorful and clean! The family that runs this fairly new restaurant puts a whole lot of love and care into their food. My husband and I really enjoyed our #20 (yellow chicken with rice) and #11 (roasted darker chicken with noodles) dishes that both came with a side bowl of savory broth, pickled cabbage and additional sauces. Every bite and sip were perfectly flavorful! Nothing too salty or oily. We came on a weekday for lunch and were seated right away. We are Asian-American, but not Vietnamese, so we appreciated the photos of their top sellers on the menu. The service was friendly and efficient, the condiments are home-made and served in clean containers, and the small restaurant is modern and clean inside. It's been a while since I can actually write a good review about a new Vietnamese restaurant in the Bay Area. We went for lunch on a weekday, no wait, and ordered: In restaurant: 1. Mì gà rôti (dry) 4/5 (I'm from the Northern VN so it leans a bit too sweat for my taste). Nothing a little pickled radish and vinegar can't fix 2. Bánh canh gà đặc biệt 3. Cơm gà Hải Nam đặc biệt 4. Dầu cháo quẩy 5/5 5. Condiments readily available 1000/1000! To go (will update once we finish eating): 1. Yogurt with black sticky rice 2. Yogurt with creamcheese 3. Banh tieu The chicken is superb, very similar to the pasture-raised chicken we usually have in Vietnam; juicy, succulent with crunchy skin. The broth is delicious, with depth. You can tell it's not some skimpy broth made from water and chicken seasoning. Service is fast, minimal and friendly. Nothing to complain or praise about. Pretty standard for Vietnamese/Asian restaurants in the area. The place is clean. I'm glad to have found a new place to come back to. I hope they will keep up with this quality. Sorry, no photo. This restaurant replaced Hai Nam's location in the plaza. Family owned, newly renovated, similar menu to Hai Nam and more. If you missed dining at Hai Nam, good news! The same chef is still here and the food is just as good. The chef went to greet table-to-table during a Saturday lunch and she did recognize some old regulars as well as myself from when Hai Nam was around. The com ga hai nam, the ga roti, and the soups are my favorite go-to. Will look forward to coming back here more often as the chef makes my favorite com ga hai nam! read more
