My wife and I came to the Plaza location today for a weekend celebration. We picked Banksia weeks ago because we wanted a pleasant, low-key brunch to celebrate. Unfortunately, we never even ate. After ordering, I grabbed some water and immediately noticed spider webs and a dried up dead spider on the water dispenser. My intention was simply to let the two ladies at the counter know so it could be cleaned in a discrete manner. I'm actually thankful Banksia has an open kitchen because my wife then noticed an employee preparing a to-go order while handling ready-to-eat food, including prepared fresh greens, with bare hands. Then, while requesting a refund, I noticed an open gallon of milk sitting out without a lid that had been sitting there since the customer behind us had ordered. At that point, we decided we no longer felt comfortable eating there and happy that we asked for a refund before our food was prepared. One employee handled the refund and seemed caught off guard. She responded, "I know, we've been busy" when I addressed the milk being left out without a lid on the counter. I replied, "Being busy should not compromise sanitation." I was completely prepared to take my refund and move on with my day. Then the other employee behind the counter said, "You can just take your refund and go somewhere else." That single comment changed the entire experience. What disappointed me wasn't just what we observed. It was how the sanitation concerns were dismissed and met with doubling down. A simple, "Thank you for bringing that to our attention. We'll take care of it," would have completely changed the outcome. Instead, we left feeling like we were the problem for speaking up. I hope this was an off day but judging by the spider webs in a low-access, high-touch area like the water station, it tells me it's the norm. read more

Stopped in on Sunday for brunch. This is an establishment where you order at the counter than the food will be delivered to your table. I had a omelette with ham and my partner had avocado toast. The portions are generous in the menu offer some good variety. There's a display case with a variety of different desserts so I couldn't help myself and purchased an item that is yellow cake with layers of berries then it's been dipped in chocolate and rolled in coconut. There are several parking spaces right on Main Street in front of the restaurant as well as a parking garage at the library across the street and a parking garage behind the restaurant that's attached. read more

We came on a weekend and it was easy to find seating and something to eat for brunch for our large group. The BAT was a good sized portion and very fresh. I got a side of potatoes which were perfectly cooked. This place is great for a fresh breakfast or lunch. read more

I love Banksia, especially as a vegetarian. The options for me are pretty plentiful overall. My latest visit was good but honestly not great. I ordered quiche and it was warm...almost cool in fact, and it was not as flavorful as food I've had in the past. The coffee was great and the service was good with the exception of our forgotten drinks until we asked for them. The girls working were very sweet though. Went after seeing the restaurant on TikTok and HAD to try to the hot cakes. Not a disappointment AT ALL. It was not overly sweet and very fluffy. The caramelized bananas were a nice touch. The owner was so funny and service was 10/10. Loved the plants on the walls and felt fresh inside even though it was HOT outside. read more

I love the meringue layer, the cream inside, and the fresh fruit on top! What I has missing out on until the last time I visited was the savory food! Such a cute space and good service! The eggs benedict was so delicious, very perfectly made. Loved the flavors. The salad was also pretty good too. It came out in a timely manner and I got my silverware at the bar side. The restrooms are in a separate hallway for the building out the back tenant door. Banksia is slowly becoming one of my favorite cafe stops on the weekends. Only an 8 minute walk from my loft, it has the most delicious almond croissants with a light almond paste in the middle. The breakfast sandwiches are very savory, very filling and very reasonably priced. Their London fog is sweet and milky! The atmosphere of Banksia is quaint and home-y, not a typical loud and bustling coffee shop, which I appreciate. The two tables right by the window are the best for watching life move outside. The beef was a good texture and chewy, with some fatty portions which I love, and the taste of the pie was wonderful. It's not a huge pie, so it's definitely a lighter meal. It's hard to impress guests from the coasts. But when I had to come up with a great breakfast place when my daughter & fiance were recently here from Seattle, I remembered reading about Banksia. We gave it a shot and I chose well. From my spanikopita roll to their full breakfasts with yummy looking fritters, bacon, buttery eggs, broiled tomatoes and some Aussie-style bread -- everyone ate everything. When I took my chef there for a date, he raved too. We had some delicious drinks this time, and my veggie breakfast burrito was amazing. Even the pastries were great -- regardless what you're craving the whole menu is available all day so you can't go wrong timing-wise. Aside from the great food, every staff member I've had the pleasure of meeting has been friendly and welcoming, which isn't something I take for granted anymore. I've been wanting to check out Banksia for a while now, and I finally got the chance to visit! What's important to know about Banksia, at least at this location, is that it's far more cafe/bakery than restaurant. At roughly 9:30am, there was no one else there, and the staff provided the pastries (I got a Lamington and a Beef & Red Wine Pie) as if it was a to-go order. In other words, not what I was expecting, but the food wasn't bad. It was a cool opportunity to try some Australian items, like the Beef and Red Wine Pie, which had a perfectly flaky crust and a tender inside, and the Lamington, which had well-balanced flavors of coconut, chocolate, and raspberry. I wasn't expecting the graininess to the cake that comes with the coconut-covered exterior but still enjoyed the overall flavor profile. The Egg's Benedict isn't a traditional egg's benedict since it's served with a shirred egg instead of a poached one, but it's a beautiful shirred egg. So delicate, with notes of truffle oil and chives to brighten it. If you're in the area, Banksia's great for a quick bite! Don't know about you but haven't seen an Australian restaurant so this was a unique and fun treat to try! It's a great addition to the food scene here in KC. Tried this on a Sunday morning and while busy there was still plenty of space and seating. We were able to bring our laptops and get some work done. The menu is so fun! You can get Australian staples like vegemite on toast but they also had some classics for those less adventurous. We had the ricotta hotcakes, the breakfast sandwich and a lamington. The ricotta hotcakes were deliciously fluffy and just the right amount of sweet. They were topped with carmelized bananas, that were caramelized right - a toffee like flavor and chewiness. The breakfast sandwich was a classic done well with fresh ingredients. Finished with the lamington which is vanilla sponge with a layer of raspberry jam and covered in chocolate and coconut. The outer layer somehow provided a little crunch but the inside was still soft and spongy. The chocolate didn't overpower the rest of the flavors so it was actually a beautifully light and airy pastry. Haven't had a dessert like this before so it was the perfect end to a great brunch. Can't wait to come back to try more of their menu (looking at the pies and sausage rolls) and try their other location for dinner! read more

It was extremely tough to decide on my breakfast selection - lots of unique entrees that sound delicious. I went with the corn and zucchini fritters; which were wonderful and served in combination with delicious Australian style breakfast baked beans, a fried egg, two strips of perfectly cooked bacon, seared cherry tomatoes and several slices of avocado. This is a good place. Felt a bit like home with the Aussie pictures on the wall. Good breakfast. They make a nice flat white. The machines are geared so they can do "short shots" (ristretto) so the coffee actually tastes good. (A lot of places are just geared for "long shots" (espresso) so coffees tend to just be brown milk bevs). Had me some Vegemite toast. Ok, all they needed to do was spread some on bread, but at least the bread was great, and whoever was spreading knew how to do it- that's easy to get wrong for a non Aussie. I also had a brekkie sandwich with egg, spinach, avo, and it was done the Australian way. As soon as I bit into it, I had perfect yolk all over my hands. That's how it's done. Breakfast needs to be a messy business! Didn't try the pies but they looked and smelled great. It's honestly not really much of an Aussie hang if that's what you are after. I had heard so many good things about both locations of Banksia! I went on a walk at Loose Park then made my way over the the South Plaza location to get some breakfast. I got there just in the nick of time because I got the last table and after I ordered there was a long line. The case of pastries that is right when you enter, is filled with a range of beautiful and delicious looking sweets. I had to get something and I finally decided to get a chocolate croissant. Then when it came to ordering breakfast I was stuck because everything on the menu sounded better than the next. I was watching food come out of the kitchen and everything looked mouthwatering. I ordered the breakfast burrito with bacon. The cheese, egg, spinach, tomato, and jalapeno perfect and I could tell it was fresh and made to order. I was a pretty good size and I didn't think I would be able to finish all of it, but like a champ I ate every bite because I couldn't get enough. One thing I love about this location is the vibe. It so bright and light inside. The windows let in so much light, the tables are metal and there is greenery everywhere on the walls. It feels very modern without being over the top. Normally I don't eat breakfast but I came across Banksia as I was looking for bakeries in KC. I thought it was unique that it has Australian influence and their ricotta hotcakes looked too good not to try. * RICOTTA HOT CAKES Two thick and fluffy pancakes topped with a caramelized banana, fresh strawberries, honeycomb butter and a light dusting of powdered sugar. The ricotta adds almost like a slight milky, creamy texture which makes each bite smooth and custardy. The strawberries were fresh but I really loved the bananas. The portion size was very generous too. * PAVLOVA I wanted to try this because of GBBS haha. The meringue shell was light and melted in my mouth but it was way too sweet, especially when eaten with the whipped cream. Like sickly sweet and I have a sweet tooth. The whipped cream and fruit by itself was a less sweet combination but even then, it was too much. Unfortunately I couldn't finish this but I'm glad I got to try it. My husband and I split the Tuna Niçoise salad and the Banh Mi. Both were delicious. The Banh Mi in particular hit the spot, as this is a tricky item to find in KC. Very good food. I've been here 3 times and had the breakfast burrito, greek pie, chicken pie, and biscuits and gravy. Pies aren't very big and they are about $10 a pop but they are very tasty. The crust is very crispy as it should be. I definitely prefer the greek pie to the chicken pie. The breakfast burrito had a crispy tortilla which I liked and overall, I enjoyed it. However, at $12, I don't think it's worth it. The best was the biscuits and gravy though. The gravy is very rich and filling while the biscuit was a bit sweet which pairs well with the gravy. First, the space is charming and modern - and green! It's a different take than the space downtown and equally welcoming. The young woman who helped us was really friendly. We tried a variety of desserts and did take them to go, although there was plenty of space to sit. The pavlova was perfectly crispy on the bottom and creamy on top with fresh fruit. The caramel square is one of my favorite things on the menu- and we got one to share. It's rich and buttery and just about the best thing ever. It met my high expectations again. I love this place so much. The atmosphere, the food, just great! They have a lot of food options like I personally like and many are healthy options. I thought it was pretty easy to find this place and if you want to park somewhere, the parking garage will lead you straight to the floor Banksia is on. My favorites are their Moroccan salad and pavlova cake. Omg that Moroccan salad has all the stuff I like and I crave that salad a lil too much. The only thing that keeps me under control is I don't live nearby and even if I'm free, it's too close to their closing time so I don't want to rush there. Everybody needs to try their pavlova cake. Holy wow! It literally is sugar melting in your mouth and it doesn't taste overwhelming sweet. One of the greatest options they have in their bakery display. There is something here that if you're willing to try that I think people should order. It's their vegemite toast. I was kinda silly one day thinking it was a veggie toast when I took my out of town friends here. I think it's really popular in Australia and I'm glad they have it as an option to get at Banksia. Nice, quiet place to have lunch. Live plants line the walls, good music playing (mostly jazz and funk) and good service. You order at the counter and seat yourself.
