When you walk in you're immediately greeted by large plants and kitschy, unmatched tables and chairs. It's so cozy, homey and welcoming. You can't go wrong with anything you order off of the handwritten, chalkboard menu. The sandwich is piled high with egg, meat and cheese and topped with heirloom tomatoes, the flatbread is crispy and loaded with your meat of choice along with potatoes and cheese, the grits are spicy and savory and the biscuits and gravy are to die for. Don't let me forget the pecan sticky buns and cinnamon rolls. Both as big as your head and served hot with drippy caramel and creamy icing. Annie, the owner is so kind and accommodating. She came out and made time to chit chat with us for a while. She even sent us home with a complimentary piece of peach cobbler. This place can do not wring. This is the most warm, nourishing neighborhood eatery that calling it anything short than "family," does it no justice. My wife and I had our first date here, years ago. We went back recently after hearing they reopened. We took our toddler, joining the family. We had the breakfast casserole with mushroom gravy and shared the most satiating blueberry basil cinnamon roll. We left with full bellies, full souls, and a sense of togetherness. It is a really interesting restaurant. The vibe here is quiet, peaceful, relaxed and rustic. You walk in, and find the ordering counter in the back, place the order then find the seat suiting yourself. The food menu does not have tons of options but still good enough. They are more like a breakfast-brunch restaurant, so mostly they offer salad and light meal. They seem to have daily specialty items. And it was presented right next to the cashier table. I got that presented salad and a cappuccino. The ingredients in their salad were really fresh and it was not a boring salad! Also this is the first time I feel so stuffed after finishing my plate of salad. I highly recommend their salad to try! As for the coffee, it was just ok. I think based on the menu and the decor or the spirit I get from this restaurant, offering some fresh squeezed/blended juice may be a good addition on the drink menu, since they don't have much drink options to choose from. My favorite hole in the wall breakfast spot in KC! Their breakfast croissant is the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had. The croissant is the perfect combo of flaky and buttery, the eggs are well-seasoned, and the ham is juicy. I crave it on the daily! They also have delicious fresh pastries that sell out almost every day. I always snag one from the display case, especially a muffin. Another side I recommend is the breakfast potatoes. Great portion, good flavor, and served with sour cream. As a self-proclaimed French toast connoisseur, their French toast is tasty! It's a French toast bake, so it has a different consistency than your classic French toast. I personally don't prefer French toast casseroles, but this one was spongy, has good flavor, and the pecans are a great addition. The service is always friendly, albeit a little slow. You order at the counter and while there usually isn't a long line, there is only 1 register so if you come at a busy time, you may wait a while. I rarely review places I eat at, but this place is a true 5 star establishment. When it comes to service, they treat you like family. We arrived minutes before closing but we weren't turned away and we were able to enjoy our brunch with absolutely no rush. We have been trying to come back to this place since the pandemic changed its hours and we are so glad we made it today! They have such an original menu, that is constantly changing to bring you the freshest ingredients. Breakfast pizza is a must have either for yourself or as a sharable. When we were driving to the restaurant, there was a decent amount of cars parked on the street leading up to the restaurant. We parked behind a car that had a bumper sticker that said "Outta my way! I'm on my way to You Say Tomato!" When we walked up, I was pleasantly surprised to see no line of people outside. We walked in. It is sort of small inside with mismatched tables & chairs. There's a sign that says order before picking a seat. We looked at the menu and although we arrived around 9:45, a few of the brunch items were already sold out. One of those was the Breakfast Flatbread which was disappointing. I got the croissant sandwich with bacon and added roasted potatoes. I also ordered a latte with almond milk. My husband ordered the corn beef hash with eggs and toast. I wanted to order a muffin or one of those crazy looking cinnamon rolls, but I wasn't starving and didn't want to order food I couldn't eat. My latte came out first and was delicious. I am always so happy when restaurants have nondairy options for milk. This place had coconut, soy, and almond milk. Not long after my latte arrived, our breakfast arrived. I was very happy with the amount of potatoes on the plate, and the sandwich was large as well. The croissant was flaky with a hint of sweetness and was perfect with the cheese on the sandwich. The potatoes were beautifully crispy. Probably the best breakfast potatoes I've had at a restaurant. I really enjoyed them. I actually couldn't finish my meal which really says something because I can usually put down a pretty good size meal! My husband's plate came with 2 full pieces of toast cut in half, so it was like 4 pieces. It came with butter and some sort of jelly, and a slice of pineapple. The corned beef hash had chunks of corned beef, not tiny little diced pieces. It also came with a pretty large amount of eggs. My husband says the hash needed a little more seasoning, but was overall pretty good. He also commented that they could have easily only given 1 full piece of toast cut in half. He did enjoy his meal, and the leftover potatoes I had. Service was quick and friendly. There's not a lot of seating, but it seems like perfect timing for when people arrive, sit, eat and leave. I found the establishment's offerings to be ridiculously overpriced and very disappointing. By 11am on the Sunday that I went, they were sold out of the top 2 items I wanted to order. The best dish was the Apple Pie, which paled in comparison to that of Whole Foods, and was quadruple the price. The biscuits were chewy and the gravy was bland. The cheese grits were a joke compared to that of First Watch or almost anywhere else. You say tomato, I say awesome! This is the definition of the quaint neighborhood eatery. It is literally la corer eatery with a sprinkling of grocery items, like fresh bread and at times local produce. I don't recall a single occasion that I had anything here that I did not toughly enjoy. Man the sweets here are delicious especially the pies. I especially like when the hot entrees' they are always part of a special so keep an eye on the board. You cannot go wrong with any of the staples though from the black bean burger or the Greek salad. That Greek salad is one of the best guilt free items I honestly seek it out if I am having a particularly unhealthy week. They have Coke's BlueSky line which are think pairs perfectly with their items, The BLT is extremely delicious and not to be missed. There sandwiches feature some of the freshest greens and the protein is top notch, none of that filler heavily salted mystery meats here. Anything you get here on a croissant is guaranteed to please. This place is a truly special place to be I have enjoyed some of the best lunches in KC either sitting next to the indoor foliage or going Parisian (of the plains) and dining on the little patio. BIEROCKS!!!!! The veggie potato curry bierock!! I could live on a secluded island and live off these bierocks for a lifetime. The husband prefers the beef and cabbage version, he's a real life cave man meat eater, which appears to be an equal hit. Ask the clerk if they have some in house if you don't see them on the menu. The ambiance is quaint. Chairs are not Uber comfortable so you won't stay terribly long. Full of plants and hippie customers. Friendly with great food and a relaxed casual atmosphere. I drove up to this place and could barely tell it was open for business other than some fog on the windows. The awning sign out front was collapsed and I think only one small plank hanging on the door. Thankfully Yelp pointed us this way and we opened the door to a warm environment with just enough room left to grab a table. Everything looked good on the menu. We had several items which were all enjoyed, although I'd love to come back again and try some other items. Look at the pictures for suggestions, I think it's all true to form. The Food: Food is served hot, fresh ingredients, organic, locally grown / raised, made-to-order, flavorful, not greasy, healthy options, tasteful, beautifully plated, wonderful all around. A tad more expensive than one would think but one must pay for the quality. Staff: they get a 9/10. The person taking orders could afford some carbonation in her rather flat personality...otherwise a stellar staff! The Ambiance: I give it a good 9.7/10! The dining room is slightly lacking in tables...some rearranging could afford them more room to accommodate more patrons /tables. Noise level was acceptable for the given facility. Great setting in a lovely historic neighborhood. Seeing as we visited on a cold day...we would recommend some kind of "wall" between the door and dining room as the cold blasts were rather uncomfortable. This place is OK. If you go in the colder months on a weekend morning, it can be extremely tough to find a table which makes for a more stressful brunch experience than I appreciate. Our latest venture had us waiting in a super long line and then all the tables filling up. Some women were taking up a four top for a half hour after they'd finished eating which had the whole group of people waiting for tables shooting daggers their way. We tried to go outside but it was just too cold and ended up sharing our table with some strangers. Not the worst thing of course but not ideal. The food is ok. I enjoy the breakfast crossaint sandwich but it's not the best breakfast sandwich out there. Everything is alright here but I recommend coming in the later spring months or summer time. read more

This is such an underrated brunch spot. AMAZING. I love the atmosphere, very cozy, the food is spot on and staff is kind.

The first time I came here, my friend and I had to wait a ridiculously long time for our food and watched everyone else get served before us... but during the long wait, we browsed the interesting selection of products on display, so that kept us entertained. They do sell some pretty cool stuff, like the gin-gin ginger candies which are hard to come across. I've ordered the french toast which was pretty heavy/rich but still really good, but my favorite is the granola. It's awesome! They make it themselves and it's different every time I go. read more

If I had to define "hidden gem", it would be this place! Oh my goodness! This place is SO cute! Major vintage vibes with the mismatched table and chairs. They have a HUGE fiddle leaf tree that has kind of become a little arch at the front door. They also have a mini grocery store section that sells random things like pumpkins and sparkling water. The menu seems to change often since its all written in chalk. The staff is so friendly and very patient when it comes to out of towners (like myself). I ordered the veggie galette and it was hands down the BEST galette I've ever had! I've been in the food industry for about 7 years and this place blew my socks off. My boyfriend got the biscuits and gravy and kudos to them for making a gravy that was flavorful but not over salty. I was raving about this place when I was in KC and when I got back home. Everyone needs to come here and try it out because it is so worth it! It's located across the street from a school on the corner of a random neighborhood. In KC dropping the kids at the airport. Needed a spot to eat breakfast. Arrived here about 730 am. Really quite at the time. Not many tables in the small restaurant and also doubles as a small grocery store selling organic foods, which also takes up some floor space. The ambiance is good. Building is old and has one bathroom. Walls and furnishings look like a patchwork of older items and decor. My wife and I both had the corned beef hash. I am gluten intolerant and they were very attentive to that and had gluten free toast. The corned beef was great. Very flavourful. One small critique, it was a little peppery giving it too much spice. The portions size was spot on and filled me up well and left me satisfied. My wife had a latte which she thought was fantastic. She also had sourdough toast that she said left something to be desired as it was not all that "sour". All in all, this was a great experience. read more

Our Kansas City Food Tour. You Say Tomato is a quaint neighborhood restaurant that is perfect for breakfast, lunch or even just dessert. You Say Tomato also has a small store selling grocery items and you can grind your own Parisi coffee with a variety of choices to take home. There were loafs of homemade bread for sale too. Plenty of delicious looking slices of pie for sale. They looked absolutely wonderful. No servers to tip. Order first and then find a table. A water jug sits in the middle of the restaurant to serve yourself. We went in for a quick lunch and I had the house salad with chicken salad on top. Everything was very fresh and the chicken salad was perfectly seasoned and delicious. My husband ordered the greek salad and chicken salad sandwich. We were both happy with our orders and how fresh everything was. I hear their breakfast is quite good and we look forward to trying it. I had breakfast here on a weekday and left feeling very underwhelmed. I had a ham and broccoli quiche and my wife had the vegetable hash. We also split a cinnamon roll. Neither the quiche nor the hash packed much flavor. The hash had a nice assortment of veggies, but the dish was under-seasoned. Additionally, the pieces were too large and cooked at two low of a temperature, with the resulting being that the dish was more of a vegetable medley than anything else. My quiche wasn't great either. The crust was chewy rather than flaky and the egg was under-seasoned, just like the hash. Maybe I just caught the kitchen on an off day, but the food simply wasn't what I would have expected from such a well-reviewed place. The venue itself wasn't great either. We went on a cold morning, and the restaurant was really chilly. My wife and I spent the whole meal in our coats. It was also extremely, almost awkwardly, quiet in the restaurant. Finally, while I'm all for unique and eclectic furniture, the chairs are small and rickety enough to be uncomfortable. I should note that the staff was very friendly and that our cinnamon roll was pretty good. My wife also had a chai tea that was quite tasty. Today was my final day in KC. I had a shockingly difficult time finding breakfast near my hotel on a Saturday morning, but this was relatively close to the WWI museum where I was spending most of the morning, and it had great reviews on Yelp, so I decided to check it out. It is very unassuming and the sign is small. I parked on the street just down the way. There are small tables both inside and out and you order at the counter. There was chalk menu posted on the wall. I ordered a chai latte and breakfast croissant. I sat at a table and my chai was brought out first. It was very good although a little foamy for my taste. Shortly thereafter my croissant was brought out and it was a substantial size. It had a large amount of egg, cheese, and essentially 4 sausage patties. Because of the large size and sort of lopsided assembly I ended up cutting it up to eat. The eggs were excellent. They tasted fresh and had fresh black pepper in them. The croissant was flaky and buttery and the sausage was good too. The place was definitely on the hipster side, but was perfect for what I wanted this am. If you want a more formal breakfast/brunch/lunch experience, you may not enjoy it as much. The menu isn't very long, compared to the multiple page spread at larger establishments, so you may wish to check it out before going if you have picky eaters. What it lacks in variety, it makes up for in quality. My breakfast croissant was very yummy and didn't leave me feeling bloated afterwards. The prices are on par with other sandwich places. In my experience, it is not an ideal grab-and-good brunch place because the food does take some time to cook. If you're in a rush, just try a coffee shop. This is definitely a cute quirky little spot in Kansas City. If I lived closer to it, I would probably go more frequently, but I don't find myself wanting to travel far for it.
