They have a wide variety of goodies to choose from, it will be hard if you're indecisive!I've tried their siu mai and egg tarts before, they were just okay. My favourite item from bao bakery is their chicken steamed bun. It is so perfectly seasoned and hearty. This bun has healing powers. Wasn't sold on this place at first but after trying more items I've decided it's overall decent. For example the steamed pork bao are much better than Newtown in Chinatown (portion wise especially). Since it's actually a Filipino place there's some other items with Ube, and lumpia. Pretty good in a pinch. Curry pan is also nice. I haven't tried their steamed buns but just bought the regular cocktail/coconut bun ,pineapple bun and apple tarts. Overall, I found the taste average. The coconut bun wasn't memorable and the crust on the pineapple bun was thin, lacked crunch and pineapple flavour. The apple tart s had a nice crust on top but it was too thick on the bottom and I wished it had more apple filling. The bakery itself was clean and had some seating for people to have their meal. Located right across the street from Joyce Station in Vancouver. I would first like to say its brand new and they are still working out glitches. Bao Bakery is a very modern, trendy and more expensive version of Maxims or Kams or any authentic Chinese Bakery. Egg tarts here are $1.40 while at a authentic Chinese Bakery its 3 for $1.00. The steam buns are huge however they have alot of dough instead of filling ( New Town replica maybe? . If you are looking for better quality and not paying more then you should I would say go on to Kingsway and buy your buns there. Overall the buns are good, they are big but just a more modern spin on them in regards to experience. They people working there are young(college students)? like running a sit down coffee shop. If you buy 6 items or more its tax free (another thing replicated from other Bakeries) Buy 2 frozen packs get 3 rd free , again expensive for buns. read more

Respectable amount of filling in each bao. Price for portion works out way better than buying a burger just about anywhere and two (probably weighing in at around $5) makes a good-sized lunch. Came here for breakfast one morning and was surprised by the amount of bao offering they have. I ordered the pinapple bun with cha siew and was a little disappointed. The top was a little too crunchy and the bun was a little dry. The cha siew was good but i wish the bun was better. The shu mai was huge and my friends enjoyed it. I'm going to take you back in time... back to the eighties - a time when shoulder pads and fob hairstyles peppered the landscape. It was a time when Chinatown was actually full of Chinese people; buying groceries, dining in Chinese restaurants, and buying Chinese pastries. At the time, nothing was as beloved as much as the baked apple tarts from Hong Kong Cafe. Lineups for these light, flaky pastries with apple filling would go through the door. Customers would buy them by the dozen and often brought them as housewarming gifts for parties. Well, one day, Hong Kong Cafe closed up and the day of the apple tart seemed to be lost forever. Or at least until New Town Bakery started making them. Their recipe was tantalizingly close to the original and, as years went by, the famous apple tart soon became associated with New Town Bakery instead. Fast forward a couple of decades and now a new shop has opened up in Vancouver that sells the same iconic apple tarts. A few months ago, Bao Bakery opened up near the Joyce Skytrain station and sells not only the infamous apple tart, but also a number of tasty steamed buns and baked pastries. I can't confirm it, but I think Bao Bakery must be related in some way to New Town because the items here taste very similar to New Town. The apple tarts here (just like the ones from New Town) aren't as delicately light and flaky as the ones from Hong Kong Cafe but they are still pretty tasty in their own right. The tarts go for $7.75 per half dozen. The baked pineapple buns have a nice, thick, crusty cookie-like topping. These buns, along with the baked bbq pork buns, are fairly large. I've been back here a number of times over the past few months and pretty much always grab at least a couple of apple tarts with my order. The egg tarts are $1.40 each while the crescent-shaped fried shrimp dumplings are $1.85 each. I've always loved the fried shrimp dumplings from New Town so it's great that I can find these closer to home now. They have large steamers filled with a few types of steamed buns. My favourites are usually the bbq pork asado ($2.10 each) and the chicken deluxe bola bola ($2.90 each). The bbq pork filling is generous and not the overly sweet type that you find in some dim sum restaurants. They seem to have added a few different items over the past couple of months but I'm always drawn back to the apple tarts and steamed buns. read more

Nice, clean and pretty modern, there's a good blend here of regular Chinese pastries and steamed buns. Seating isn't too large with only a couple of tables so it's more of a grab-and-go place. I ended up getting one BBQ pork steamed for $2.10 and it was pretty good. I wouldn't say it was the biggest bun, but it's super quick, convenient and tasty to get. You can also get frozen buns where you steam yourself if you are interested in some DIY. Overall, good place for me because I live in the area. So I used to come here a lot to grab a quick lunch or snack when I would take the 43 to UBC. It was so conveniently placed right by the bus stop, it was hard to resist a lunch that was filling and cheap (It used to be around $5.50 for two baos when I used to get them. However, the price has gone up but I still think it is reasonable.), I would always get their pork and vegetable and spicy pork baos. I thought the bun was pretty fluffy and ratio of meat to bun was good. Today, I decided to try their other baked goods. One of their new items was a ube donut. I don't really like donuts, but I got it for my family to try out. My brother thought there was too much sugar on the outside and my mom thought there wasn't enough ube filling. Overall, it was just ok. I also got egg tarts and I thought it was really delicious. The pastry was very flaky and the filling wasn't too sweet. I would definitely buy more egg tarts from them and it is reasonably priced. Nice little bakery in the Collingwood hood. Such a good idea to make Chinese pastries more accessible to different crowds and age groups. They even have matcha lattes, etc to up the appeal. Prices are pretty decent and not as overpriced as you'd expect it to be judging from the outside. Eggtarts + pineapple bun is 3.5 stars. Pineapple bun crust was good but the bun itself was slightly on the drier side. Eggtart was decent. The steamed baos looked great. Will come back to give that a try! read more

I know all about Chinese baked buns (aka bao) as I had a lot of them in Hong Kong when I was living there. Bao Bakery did particular well with the cocktail, ham & egg, sausage, curry beef and BBQ pork buns and they are very close to what I used to have in Hong Kong. The buns are good size for what they charge, they have the right consistency, good amount of fillings or meat. I wish they put less fat in the BBQ bun though. The bakery also serves steamed buns and siu mai (shrimp & pork dumpling) and their matcha latte is decent. This place is kept relatively clean and there are 4 tables and chairs, enough for 8-10 people to have a quick snack or lunch. It's located right at Joyce Station. In my opinion, Bao Bakery makes better buns than some of the well established bakery such as Saint Germain, the Boss, Kam Do, Maxim's Bakery, Pine House. I was craving some good steamed buns while visiting Vancouver and I found this place 10 minutes before the closed. It was so good!! The steamed buns were amazing! The bola bola is very good. Very meaty and the salted eggs made it even better. The spicy pork is really flavorful. It's good because it's not too spicy. They were also very nice. I was being a little confusing while ordering so I think not all the things I ordered made it to the box. I didn't get a receipt so I don't know if I was charged or not. Dropped by Bao Bakery for the first time this afternoon on my way home! The inside is clean and spacious, and there's a good variety of baos (including bola bolas!) and baked Chinese-style buns/pastries in the display cases too! I wasn't feeling 100%, so I wanted something simpler. I got a baked pork bun ($2.15) and two plain baos ($1.25 each) to take home. Prices are a bit more on the expensive side compared to places like T&T where their baos are around $1.70 each, but these ones are a bit bigger. The pork bun was nice and toasty and the filling was flavourful and had that nice slightly sweet BBQ taste. I saw on one of their counter signs that they serve halo halo, so I definitely want to come back and try that out soon! Didn't know about this place until my co-worker mentioned it to me so I had to give it a try. Came here with my bf on a Friday afternoon. As we walked inside, I could smell that lovely aroma of freshly baked buns! When we walked closer, I was so excited because they had so many delicious looking buns and desserts to choose from which made it quite difficult to decide on what we wanted, well for me anyways. My bf wanted to order so many but I told him we can always come back. After some time of deciding lol, we ended up sharing a bbq pork bola bao, an Italian sausage hot dog with cheese and a red bean matcha mochi. I also had a side of unsweetened iced matcha. We dived into the bola bao first because it was warm. It was absolutely huge and delicious!! It tasted way better than the ones from dim sum but I know I shouldn't compare it to that since it's different. I liked how the bbq pork wasn't as sweet and there was less fat, and the bun itself was so light and moist. Next was the Italian sausage hot dog with cheese which was so tasty! I liked how they used an Italian sausage over the typically processed wieners because it tasted better and had more flavor. The bun was my favorite part because it had a crispy exterior with some burnt edges and these crispy cheese bits attached while the inside was nice and fluffy, and slightly sweet which went so well with the salty sausage. Finally, the matcha mochi. The exterior part was gooey and soft, and the red bean had a smooth consistency which was so yummy. After we were done our delicious meal, I was quite full but my bf wanted to order one more which I was tempted too but we were going to go out to Memphis Blues for dinner so we had to hold back. Also got a fried shrimp dumpling which was interesting in taste, it's not my thing but worth trying it. Lumpia Shanghai was awesome and the shrimp shu Mai was delicious. Brand new place that opened up on Joyce street by the station. A really good addition to a somewhat run down hood. It's a good pastry alternative to the Tim Hortons. I love the red bean cinnamon and sugar coated Boa. I love how the inside is just sweet enough, not enough. It feels like a donut to me, just not a cavity assault like across the street. Prices are very fair. Bonus points is that they do serve coffee and lattes. There is very minimal seating, however, it's clear that they've intended this to be a grab and go situation. Customer service needs to be a bit more organized. 3 people and only two actually working while the other just wanders like a ghost. I've been watching for this place to open for months! Was curious to see what it was all about. Finally had the time to try it out. Went a couple weeks ago to try out their buns. The chicken and spicy pork were TDF. They had a buy 2 get 1 free deal for frozen goods so I got some buns to bring home. I went back a couple days ago to get more frozen buns because my family liked them so much. We've tried the chicken, chicken bola bola, minced pork with veggies, BBQ pork and spicy pork. All of them are super well made. Traditional buns. HUGE. SO well worth it. I would definitely recommend this place. I'll have to try out their baked goods next time!! read more

It was so good my friend vandara almost had to walk home to seattle because he tried to eat mine and sidney's pastry. Vandara is usually a nice guy but as we finished ordering he couldn't control his hunger and snatched my food giving me only a small portion. Convenient location, so I've been there frequently. Some of the steamed buns and baked goods are tasty. The price is acceptable, and they accept various payment methods. However, the last time when I went there, the service was really unsatisfying. I ordered a donut and red bean bun, but the assistant didn't even ask me which kind of red bean bun (steamed or baked) I'd want. Then she told me the amount and I paid by card. After a while she came back to tell me that they'd run out of baked red bean bun, and if I want steam bun, I need to pay 50cents more. And she directly started the transaction on the screen without saying anything. I tried to figure out what's happening, but she explained in an impatient and gruff way. After I understood, she was eager to ask me to pay again. I was surprised by her attitude and unprofessional service. So I said, "I'm sorry that I don't wanna the red bean bun. Can I get the refund?" Finally another colleague came to help and gave cash to me. The experience was unpleasant. Because she made rush decisions without asking for the customer's ideas or needs, and there's no apology in the whole process, I would not go back recently. I bought 6 chicken buns and some frozen meat and veggie buns. Disappointing. While the steamed bun portion was nice and not too dense, the filling was lacking savouriness and volume. The bakery itself looks nice and there is a few tables on the left side for eating in. Maybe try diversifying your menu more and being more generous with filling portions inside each bun. read more
