I'm not sure what's going on with our usual go-to Chinese restaurant in Newbury Park, but after a year and a half absence from getting takeout from them, they don't appear to be open. Their voicemail message continues to say "temporarily closed." So I started searching closer to home, which is a challenge because I don't usually view any Simi Valley restaurant as being worthy of our patronage... yet, I searched anyway. I found Bao Su on Yelp, so we decided to give them a try based on other Yelper reviews. Bottom line is that my husband and I were incredibly impressed with their food, not to mention, happy that it is so much closer. We ordered the following (takeout): Shrimp Fried Rice Shrimp with Lobster Sauce Szechuan Style Eggplant Sizzling Chicken Mongolian Beef I had a bit of a problem deciphering their menu because there weren't a lot of details as to ingredients, so I took chances and prayed they were dishes we've had before. Everything was delicious, plentiful and mostly recognizable... with the exception of the shrimp with lobster sauce. That was more soup-like and watered down from what we're used to, but it was still really good. All dishes were loaded with protein and vegetables, well seasoned and sauced, and textures were soft or crunchy, just as we knew them to be... and just as we loved them. We've since ordered from them again, and they were (very happily) consistently delicious. We are sooooooo happy to now have a LOCAL Chinese restaurant that we can trust and enjoy. We may even dine there and not do the takeout thing for a change. (I really would like to ask them what some of their other dishes are on the menu cuz I would like more options, truth be told. However, if the dishes above are the only ones I would ever choose to order, I'm fine with that, too.) read more

Wifey and I love stopping here for our favourite dishes !! Their Sweet and Sour Chicken never disappoints as it offers a well balanced tartness coupled with the subtle tangy richness! The Filet is sinfully tender being seasoned perfectly with almost a savoury black pepper marinade tossed with large slices of onion and bell pepper. This restaurant is unswervingly consistent with its entree quality & taste paired with great customer service and leadership!! The dining area is clean and fairly spacious as are the bathrooms! I am not a Chinese food lover at all. But I did enjoy this place. I normally eat Chinese food if I can help it. But dim sum, and bao buns I will have. I tried bites of what my family ordered which was actually pretty tasty. I would highly recommend the pork/ shrimp dim sum, and the sesame rice balls. They have really good drinks too. I especially love the Chinese YouTube videos they play on the projector. It gets you immersed into the culture. Service is fast, and efficient too! read more

I was in Simi Valley around 2 pm and had a taste for Chinese food. Remember visiting Bao Su a year back, so I called them to order the same dish as before, the Kong Pao Fish Fillet from the lunch special section of their menu. Substituting fried rice has no extra charge and I chose the egg drop soup over the sweet and sour. Actually, very pleased to learn that soup was included. For some reason, several Asian restaurants do not give out lunch special soup for carry out. Unlike my previous visit, the fish was battered and therefore took away the texture and mouthfeel of eating directly into pieces of fish. I had asked for it spicy and they added not only chopped Thai chillies, but also large dried red chillies which were still raw and tasteless. I liked the heat. The vegetables in the dish were done perfect, half cooked (the way I like it), nice, coarsely chopped and crunchy. Overall, the dish had a good flavor. While the egg drop soup had an overdose of gelatin, that overwhelmed the egg taste, the egg fried rice was done well. It also came with an egg roll. Service was prompt and timely. I love this Simi Valley restaurant. Located in a strip mall. I have been here for lunch, Dim Sum and dinner. Restaurant is clean, bright and decorated is minimalist. Great wait staff and wide variety of menu items. Prices are $$ however, worth it. I ordered the lunch menu item today, garlic green beans and crystal shrimp dumplings. Pretty authentic Chinese food. The lunch special is Mon-Sun 11am -3pm which is great. I ordered the lunch special and got the chicken lo mein and sour and spicy soup. Surprised by how spicy the soup was but I loved it. Noodles were good as well. I also enjoyed the Hokkaido milk tea. read more

Tried to phone and place an order for pickup on New Year's Eve. Phone goes directly to a voicemail box where the box is full--goodbye. I can kind of understand that...just really busy I guess. It's local, my wife and I drove by to place the order in person, wait in lobby. We go in...we know exactly what we want to order, take home. Old man with a cane beats us to the front door. Wears an old T-shirt, sweat shorts, black socks and sandals. How'd he beat us to the door? He's at the register placing his order. "I want shrimp but no jarred garlic," proclaims the old man. "Nothing else." "We're too busy, take a menu over there and pick what you want." "Look, I want shrimp but no jarred garlic." More people filtering into the lobby. Old man is getting frustrated. He won't budge. Old man continues on about just shrimp, nothing else. "Pick something from the menu," she fires back at the old man. "Go over there and pick something if you're not ready." Lady behind the register is obviously training a new employee (on New Year's eve). Whaaaaat? She's panicking. More people filtering into lobby. Old man continues to fight about his custom shrimp order at register: "Look, I just want..." "Are you ready to order," she asks me. "Yes, I am, I tried to call but your phone is not..." Old man getting angrier about picking something from the menu. Decided to leave based on the experience. Obviously understaffed. Thought the food would be improperly cooked. We walk out. This is only spot I know of in town that has the essential DIM DUM items: har gow/crystal shrimp dumplings, shumai, veggie pot stickers, sesame rice balls, and steamed pork buns. They also have really good stir fried garlic bok choi and salt peppered shrimp that all goes perfectly together with a little carafe of ice cold peach SAKE. Service is good. A solid letter grade of "C." It was OK if I were in the area and it was something I felt like, Chinese with no particular region, then yeah it can work.  I'm not driving from Ventura to Simi to eat there. For instance, the tables are set with forks, not chopsticks.... Despite the word "Bao" in the name and a dumpling logo they do not have xiao long bao but rather "juicy pork dumplings" likely not made in house, more like a Costco bulk buy, and not served in a bamboo steam basket.  They weren't bad, but I could have done the same at home, and the dipping sauce was weak at best.  They also came out last, normally they are served first but no big deal. The Hot & Spicy soup (as opposed to Hot and Sour) was decent and the "cup" size serving was generous.  Also had the Kung Pao Combo with Chicken, Shrimp, Beef.  Again, OK, the shrimp was likely frozen, the beef was a bit chewy and a little heavy on the corn starch. The String Beans were probably overall the best of the four items we ordered, a bit more seasoning would be nice, but judging by the 100% caucasian diners while we were there I understand.  A spice tray would have been nice touch. The place is also crammed tight, but I can appreciate maximizing the small dining area footprint, rent ain't cheap! So, yeah a solid "C" overall.  Maybe trying some different dishes would be the key but the word "Bao" in the name suggests a better Dim Sum experience.  And if I lived in the area, especially close enough for delivery I'd be OK with it, exploring the menu a bit more. read more

I went to Bao Su for dinner with my sister and we ordered some dim sum and one main dish of shrimp, chicken, and beef in black bean sauce. We substituted the green peppers for bok choy. They did add an extra charge, but in the end, it was totally worth it as the dish was delicious The dim sum was OK. It wasn't fantastic. I almost wonder if it was frozen, but we didn't ask if the dim sum was made on site. The menu is gigantic. I would definitely come back to try other authentic sounding Chinese dishes. I should give them 2 stars as a Christmas gift, but I can't. Thinking we'd do a Traditional Jewish Christmas while visiting my daughter who lives in Simi, we went to this restaurant for our Christmas feast. I called the restaurant 2days ahead to make sure they would be open on Christmas. I was told they would be open until 9. In the pouring rain we ventured out to find this restaurant, arriving shortly before 6. The restaurant has the atmosphere of your average Shake Shack, but we were hungry and the menu was tempting. There were about 5 patrons seated in a mostly empty restaurant and another 5 waiting for take out. We were advised when we asked to be seated that they were not taking any more guests, and that any take out order would be a 90-minute wait. Needless to say, we were very disappointed. No explanation was given for this situation. We got back in our car and Googled for other options. We ended up at IHOP, where we were served line royalty. Cream cheese wontons were super crunchy and filled with the perfect amount of cream cheese. The tangerine chicken was amazing! Crunchy and sweet! The pad Thai wasn't the best - wouldn't get it again. It was too watery, didn't have peanuts and just didn't have the "pad thai" vibe! (The waiter did bring me peanuts when I said it would taste better with them) I would just try the lo mein or chow mein next time! The ambiance is ok - part of it looks like storage and the other half is the resto - but kinda tight seating The food is good - my husband ordered one of their specialties which is the the chicken with mixed vegetables - that one is super good! Their dumplings are good too but I had better. I tried their tea with foam and it was interesting at first but ended up liking it. Service could be better. There's only 2 servers and it would have been ok if there's not a lot of customers. I suggest going there early. It gets busy and like what I said, seating is too tight. This is hands dowm the best Chinese restaurant in Ventura County in my opinion. Our family drives from West Hills whenever we want Chinese food because it so much better than other Chinese restaurants closer to us including the ones in Ventura Blvd and Northridge. After hearing about Bao for months, hubby and I decided to give it a try tonight. Of course, I forgot to take a picture of the Tangerine Chicken (which was by far the best part of our meal). We ordered extra food (to bring home leftovers) but had the Shrimp Lo Mein, Veggie Fried Rice, Veggie Dumplings and as mentioned, Tangerine Chicken. I would say all of it was good, not necessarily great. Everything but the chicken was just lukewarm. As others have mentioned, it's very odd that the tables are so close to each other. I definitely felt like I was dining with strangers as they were quite talkative which made me feel like I was eavesdropping. Not much ambiance. Our server didn't check back at any point but was very nice when he initially took our order and delivered our food. We did have to ask for boxes and our check. The jury is out as to whether we'll go back as we have a favorite Chinese restaurant that's closer to our home! read more
