I called ahead to be sure everything was ready as I have children with ASD as well as other diagnoses. The staff were super helpful. They took our order on the phone, gave a very appropriate time to come in, and had everything ready to go. Our waitress was so sensitive, patient, and kind. She was helpful and allowed us to sit in a quiet and tucked away area so there was less sensory triggers for the kids, My children absolutely loved their visit, and all the fun "piggies" on display. Went here for dinner. Very ornate decorations with pig photos, pig ceramics etc. adorn the colorful restaurant. Friendly service, nice menu.We ordered the half bbq chicken. Comes with coleslaw and we subbed a salad to replace French fries we didnt want.. I liked the coleslaw. Chicken was tender. Tasted more like a baked chicken with a slightly spicey sauce i didnt care for.. Although chicken tender but I had better tasting bbq chicken elsewhere. Hush puppies were ok, somewhat over fried. I'm beyond happy this was the place we chose because it was such a great experience! The staff treats you like family from the get-go. It's an interesting place! I would go back but I wouldn't call it a culinary experience! It's a down home simple menu. I wouldn't even say it's real bbq. But I had a pork sandwich which was tasty. I had the BBQ plate ($12.40). I'm not sure the BBQ is actually cooked onsite. What peaked my suspicion is that nothing smelled of pit cooked BBQ either inside or outside the restaurant. Plus, no BBQ sauce is on the table; except Texas Pete if that counts. Then the BBQ is served as a mush with the sauce mixed in. Likely oven cooked. Or, crock pot. Fries are standard issue, not salted, and bland. Cole slaw is not bad. Maybe other things in the menu are better, but with BBQ in your name, you'd think that would be your go-to meal. It's not. Do yourself a favor and order something else. read more

What could improve? First, the flavor of the bbq. It's just a meat (beef, pork, chicken) with some sauce on it. It's not true bbq in the sense of what bbq lovers expect. I get that this is a local landmark, the locals support it and the lady, Faye or whoever is a nice lady who sits and sleeps in the kitchen in plain view of the customers...looks unprofessional and a tad weird, but whatever. The biggest complaint for me is this woman, Tina, or something like that, was kinda nice when I first started coming by, but she's turned into a very unpleasant, rude waiter. Most of the others are real nice, but she's not. Generally now when I go and she's there, I hope for no service from her. I know the locals don't care for negative comments about this place and they all probably like her, but not me. If I could give this place zero stars, I would, mostly because I feel we were deceived. They claim to serve bbq (hence the name), but the "barbeque" chicken and ribs are actually made in a crockpot. My chicken looked like it was boiled with some kind of bbq sauce thrown on top. Wet, soggy and gross. Same for my husband"s ribs. Both served with cold stringy fries. I would have been embarrassed to serve food like this to any guests of mine. Honestly do not understand all the five star reviews, especially in a state known for its authentic bbq. read more

We were making a Saturday trip to Costco and yelped to find our next great find! We found the Bar-B-Q Ranch and we're so happy we did! Great menu choices, friendly service and reasonable prices. We chose the Rib Sandwich, BBQ sandwich, cheese fries, Mac n cheese and finished off with funnel cake for dessert! The rib sandwich was so flavorful and tender, bread was spot on soft with some crisp too. Mac was good. Cheese fries were ok. Funnel cake topped with ice cream was incredible! Obviously there are different kinds of BBQ, and this particular one was fine but it didn't seem to be different than pork soaked in sauce (which was tasty) on a plain hamburger bun. Price seemed a little much for what was received. The location has been in existence since the 40s, so it has a rich history. The interior feels like it is from that era with many old photos and such, all of which creates that throw-back atmosphere which, while somewhat alluring, also feels dated as well. The service was so-so. No major criticism, although the server could have stopped by once to check on drinks. Overall, the experience was fine and might still be a stop the next time I'm through the area. read more

Was driving by about a month ago and stopped in and tried one of their barbecue sandwiches. It was pretty good so I decided the next time I headed this way I'd bring my wife and we could have lunch. Came by for lunch yesterday and it did not disappoint! my wife had the barbecue rib sandwich, which was literally baby back ribs with the bones pulled out of it in a piece of hogie bread! I LOVE places off a highway in the middle of nowhere. These are the true hidden gems of America. Covid stuff: yeah they all had on masks and tables were spaced. The place was immaculate clean. I ordered the rib sandwich. What's that you ask? It rib meat they pull off the bone and put on a yummy bread. It was amazing good. I have to get to this place when I can go order a full slab of ribs and call it a night. It seems to be a regular family business which I love. Avoid the chains off the highway. Visiting Harrisonburg for a conference, and thankfully another conference attendee recommended this place or I would have had no idea to come here. The pulled pork was incredible - so tender, in such a flavourful sauce with just the right amount of sweet and heat. The Mac and cheese was great too, very rich and creamy. I was recently working in the vicinity of the Bar-B-Q Ranch and saw that they had been around since 1945.... So I figured if they are still around they might be worth checking out. The interior is nice and they have a lot of display cases showcasing their pigs... yep... pigs. All types of pig figurines, etc. They have a large offering of food such as burgers, hot dogs, chicken, etc., but not a lot of actual BBQ which is what I thought they would have. I would have liked to have some ribs or brisket. However they only offered a chopped pork sandwich or a pork rib sandwich. I did have the pork sandwich one day with cole slaw and onion rings. It was tasty but I expected more. The next day I tried the foot long hot dog with chili and slaw. I wish the dog itself was a little bigger, but I could have had the same thing at a Sonic and be just as happy. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. I enjoy trying and supporting local businesses and would eat here again if in the area. Won't make a special trip to eat, but nice to know it is there if I am back in the area in the future. read more

Went here for father day based on review. Was hoping for barbecue ended up have frozen food warmed up. The ribs where microwaved and in some kind of red sauce, the steak was so thin there was no way to make it other than well down. Buyer be ware. Delicious! I had the 1/2 chicken. The sauce was really yummy and perfectly proportioned. The leftovers made for a beautiful lunch the next day. My husband had the pulled pork sandwich, which he said was amazing even though he felt like there was much more bread than pork. Another restaurant that you want to like, but the food won't let you. This is a pretty easy review: The high point here is that you get to see quite an extensive collection of little pigs. And that is great if you are in to collectible pigs. The low point here: Everything else. This establishment touts itself as a BBQ Ranch. First, I don't think their "BBQ" is even made at the restaurant, and if it was, they should not admit that it is. My guess is that everything here was frozen before serving. You can probably get better BBQ in the frozen food section of a Walgreen's. This is absolutely not a real Barbeque joint and anyone that rates the food here over two stars should have their Yelp privileges revoked. I think my one star review is generous, and they only get that because of the collectible pigs. read more

North Carolina transplant and BBQ enthusiast here. Was VERY disappointed with the prices, beverages, sides, and most importantly the BBQ! I feel like most things here are frozen and microwaved in the back. They have a pretty devoted following from the older locals that live here. Other than that, I don't see why anyone would come here for the 'que. THAT being said, there are some pretty decent looking dessert options- shakes, funnel cake, etc. I might return to try some of those this summer, but will not return for anything else. read more

Had lunch. It was okay. I had the barbecue sandwich with cole slaw and a side of fries. If you are looking for real southern or Texas or St. Louis barbecue, this ain't it. The pork was already soaked in bbq sauce. It was a sweet sauce which I'm not a fan of. Then there was no additional sauce to put on it. Tried adding hot sauce, and it made it a little better, but still too sweet. Not sure that that meat had ever seen a smoker either. It was tender, but not very smokey. The shoestring fries (my personal favorite) were okay. They could have been a lot crispier. The price was very good though. Less than $15 for two sandwiches with slaw and two fries. Stopped in around 12:30pm on a Saturday. Friendly, quick service. We each got the bbq plate (pork sandwich, fries, coleslaw and hush puppies). We upgraded our fries to seasoned curly fries, which was worth the extra $0.80. I didn't like the coleslaw (drier and a little sweet) but my fiance loved it. The pork was tangy and moist, served on a warmed bun (more of a tomato-based sauce). The curly fries were crispy and hush puppies were nice sweet and dense.
