One of the locals told us about this place. It's about a 6 minute walk from The visitor Center in Bryson City. You walk in and order at the counter and then they call your number and you pick up your food. Cute little place with inside and outside seating. We just got a hamburger and a pulled pork sandwich with fries. And a Coke. Prices for reasonable the sandwiches were only like $7. After that we had to try there strawberry shortcake for $5. Super friendly and super fast service. Great place to go if you're on a budget and want to get in and out quickly.. They had tons of sauces to choose from too. We were shopping in the area and debating on where to eat, so we asked a local where his favorite place to go was and he directed us to the Bar-B-Que Wagon. He basically said "it's right around the corner and to the left;" easy enough ;) This is an old school BBQ joint, nothing super fancy, just straight to the point and prices are very reasonable. Note, this place is cash only so be sure to bring some or you'll have to use the ATM which is conveniently located in the restaurant. We ordered the chopped pork sandwich, a cheese burger and fries and it came to $21. After our meal we went back and ordered the strawberry shortcake ($5). Our food was super fresh and tasty. We enjoyed the variety of BBQ sauces they had available especially the hot and spicy one. We would have liked a little more fries with our meal but for the price I'm not complaining. The restaurant is a bit dated and could use a refresh some other seats are peeling and the tables were sticky but that could be due to whatever chemicals you're using to wipe them down cuz I did see staff cleaning tables after customers left. We LOVED the bar-b-que wagon. It is just off the main strip near the IGA in downtown Bryson City. They have indoor and outdoor seating and the outdoor seating is on the water. So beautiful! The establishment is cash only so be prepared. My brisket was exceptional. The helpings were perfect. We each had some leftovers. The service was friendly. We had a large group go to Bar-B-Que Wagon on a Tuesday around 12:30. The place was packed! We were surprised to see it was cash only but they do have an ATM in the restaurant. We ordered brisket, pork, beef, sandwiches and platters as a group. Our sides were cole slaw, fries, onion rings, & beans. All the food was fantastic. Yuck, this is probably the worst barbecue I've had in the south of the United States. Their pulled pork is ground like the inside of a sausage. I know that so they can use all the parts dry and not so dry. My husband had ribs and he said they were so fatty that couldn't eat them. The slaw I know is normally OK to be ground up, but this was ground fine. The highlight of the meal was the hush puppies. They're a little odd looking, but the flavor is good. Of course my husbands were overcooked and he's the big hush puppy guy. So I let him have mine. The place has a nice atmosphere, looked clean and did have outside seating. Oh my gosh was this place delicious. I wish I could add a photo but realized all the food was gone before I took one. Truly fantastic chopped pork and probably one of the best slaws I've ever had. The food is actually pretty good. We ate here twice. Brisket is really my jam and it's just okay at this restaurant... it definitely needs a sauce. The slaw is super delish, so were the fries and hush puppies. I'd probably rate it a solid 4 stars but the staff are really unfriendly and not at all welcoming. Great little spot on the way in to Bryson City. We loved being able to sit outside by the water and enjoy the view (albeit was very cold). In Bryson City for weekend whitewater rafting trip. Decided to come see "town" and grab some lunch. Very unassuming. Walked in to counter service being right there and while I waited, I reviewed the menu that was above the drink station to the left. However when I stepped up to the counter to order, there was a board with daily specials. So I ordered the sandwich special that came with a pulled pork sandwich, fries, slaw and drink for $7.95. Very good deal! Slaw needed seasoning but was ok. Not too wet and I loved the steak fries. I was not impressed with the sandwich after the first bite, but then I added the sweet bbq sauce and it was on from there! There is plenty of meat on this sandwich, and the bun was super soft. Really enjoyed my meal. Service was very good. The young lady taking orders was super friendly and does her job well. And in between customers, she was responsible for cleaning the dining room. I am not sure how they cook their ribs but they looked and tasted like they were thrown in a steamer with no spices and overcooked until they were just gray, flavorless meat. She got the Pulled Pork Samdwich side of fries and slaw. I got the Brisket platter sides of baked beans and slaw with hushpuppies. The sandwich wasn't dry at all and very flavorful and she could add any sauce she wanted amount limitless. My platter was awesome the brisket didn't need sauce and had amazing flavor. Hamburger bun with some grey shredded pork and a tiny squirt of sauce. The dog liked it, however. Fries appeared to be leftover from yesterday or perhaps the day before. Didn't touch them. IMO many of the slightly-less-than-great reviews here take the model of "this place isn't exactly like the bbq place down the road from my grandma when I was a kid, and therefore I will not rate it highly." Yeah, this place isn't exactly like that place for me either, but it doesn't have to be for it to be excellent. Had the chopped pork one day, with great fries and baked beans. Lots of sauce options to choose from. The vinegar, gold, and spicy options were my favorites, alone or mixed together. Two days later I thought I'd try the beef, so I got some brisket which was also great, with mashed potatoes and fried okra. My only complaint is that the fried okra was maybe a little overcooked. Friendly service, decent prices, fun interesting random stuff to look at on the wall while you're eating. Two thumbs up. read more
