Ummm thanks Butt no thanks. First of all the lady behind the counter was far from concerned with Customer Service as I dropped 84$ for 5lbs of ribs and some beans and a hotdog. We stopped to get a to-go plate for traveling. The outside caught our attention enticing us to stop. Upon exiting the vehicle, we were hit with an incredible smell of smoke. We went inside and ordered. The waiter was helpful and friendly. Upon getting our food, we found the amounts to be good and appealing. Good place for lunch. They have a good chopped pork sandwich deal for like $5. I like their BBQ sauce. The ribs are usually dry and not recommened. Found myself in Bryson City after a nearly impossible chain of events had me driving to Knoxville from Charlotte to take advantage of a Delta Sky-miles flight... North Carolina. Smoky Mountains. The stubby looking unshorn young hillbilly at the counter looks at me cross-eyed with head cocked when I inquired "do you have have ribs?"our ribs are all baby-back ribs sir. SOLD. OK. Half slab of baby backs. Hush Puppies. (I wasn't sure what Hush Puppies were - Tator-Tots where I grew up). Turns out to be absolutely delicious, totally falling off the bone, outstanding kind of Barbecue that makes me dream of packing it off and living in the Smoky Mountains. Or maybe not. The Barbeque Wagon is on the main drag going through Bryson City. Plenty of parking available. Walk through the double doors and fight the crowd to place your order (a lot of locals get their BBQ "to go"). There are a number of barbeque options-- ribs, chopped pork, and chicken (to name a few). My husband and I each got a "combo" plate. You get your choice of 2 types of barbeque, 2 sides, and either rolls or hush puppies. The baby back ribs are wonderful-- so tender and flavorful! The meat portions are quite generous! The sides are OK (the baked beans and cole slaw are the best of the sides). And the rolls are great, served warm with a hint of salty butter brushed over the tops. Be sure to come hungry if you order the combo plate, 'cause it's a lot of food! You find an available table, choose your sauce (a number of different types of BBQ sauce-- try mixing the vinegar and honey sauces!), and wait for your number to be called so you can get your food. I'm a barbecue snob. Having grown up a few towns over from Lexington, NC, I have some pretty deep-seated feelings and preferences about sauce. That said, I'll try any place's chopped pork at least once and as soon as I saw the sign, I was excited for the Wagon. We came here after a few hours of hiking around the local waterfalls with no water bottle and I put away 3 servings of sweet tea even before we got our food -- it was way better than some old water. The chopped plate was generously sized though the chop was a little finer than I normally like, I got used to it quickly. I got double fries for my sides and they were incredible. Like Belgian frites except I got to squeeze the Vinegar based bbq sauce all over them. My boyfriend got the large chopped sandwich which was massive. I think we eventually settled on the Vinegar and the sweet sauces mixed together as our favorite. The ambiance is very standard bbq joint (think pigs in pants and bonnets) with a metric ton of Elvis mixed in. That just made it fun to look around while I shoveled barbecue in my mouth. In which case I can tolerate the fact that they only accept cash, plastic plates and silverware that makes me feel like a cheap date because they're too lazy to do dishes, and the fact that entire police force is always there stuffing their faces because let's face it bryson city isn't the most happening town even for criminals. I visited this restaurant twice on my vacation to Bryson City, NC, on July 10th and 11th 2019. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for great barbecue. I had the large pulled pork sandwich with the sweet barbecue sauce, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. The sandwich was huge and very delicious.
