    The sampler appetizer
    Keith J.

I went to Bar Down Sports Bar for dinner on a Friday night and ordered a sampler appetizer and a pizza that's the usual St. Louis style thin style cut into squares and I thought their pizza was a cut above many other STL style pizza places that I've tried. I ordered a small 9" deluxe pizza on a cracker thin crust and the crust held all of those ingredients very well and kept a crunch to each bite until the end without the crust getting soggy, loved it! However i wasn't as positive about the sampler appetizer that I ordered although the mozzarella sticks and marinara sauce were very good, I thought the wings, toasted raviolis, and onion rings tasted okay but were kind of average usual St. Louis bar food. Also, the bar offered A-B beers with a few typical craft beer types on tap including the Space Dust IPA that I really like but it was served in a plastic cup and would've preferred a glass. I want to get back there sometime and try the burgers or sandwiches but then again I may just go there for the pizza, yum.

Lots of little touches that age group will appreciate. Even though the place was packed, we found a seat right away. Service was prompt but not pushy, and based upon how hot the food was when it arrived, it wasn't sitting around in the kitchen for long. Pretty good price for the generous portion. If I had been going straight home after, I could have brought enough in leftovers for another meal. They also have a heavy metal themed brunch, which will be my next thing I have to check out here

If appears they have game tournaments there too which is cool. We all ordered burgers in our party and I'm not sure if they needed up our order or if this place only has waffle fries but that's what we all ended up with at our table. I'm not big on waffle fries but they didn't taste bad. It was busy and I think our server/bartender was all over the place so ib didn't say anything. He did forget our cup of cheese sauce and took the whole plate to the back instead of just going to get the cheese sauce. The burgers were ok, a little thick for my liking but taste fine. Others enjoyed their burgers but it was a bit too much. Overall the atmosphere was cool, the decor was nice and we had fun. I think it's a place people should experience. That being said, I wouldn't return because the food wasn't for me.

We were pretty seated right away (party of 2.5) next to their beautiful plants and bar. Parking in the area can be a headache, but Songbird does have a small parking lot next door and can be worth trying. Our service was very welcoming and nice! The menu is a bit smaller than most, but I really enjoyed what we ordered. We started off Vanilla Iced Latte, an Iced Hibiscus Tea supplied by the London Tea Room, and waters. They gave my toddler his water in a to-go coffee cup which delighted me because in passing... a small child having his morning coffee lol Our food was great, filling, and delicious: a breakfast sandwich with aged white cheddar, applewood smoked bacon, and fried egg, huevos rancheros with housemade chorizo, and a farm toast (french toast with peaches) Lovely breakfast date - I highly recommend!

The quality has not wavered once. I ordered what I always order: The Combo (fried eggs, maplewood smoked bacon, cheese, brioche toast), extra egg, extra bacon. Most kitchens treat a fried egg as binary (runny or ruined). Songbird has mastered the middle register: lacy edges with a yolk that stays glossy and intact right up until the first bite. I ordered them over hard, and they came out a bit closer to over medium, but they were just as good as I wanted them to be. The bacon carries real smoke. This is a decadent sandwich, big enough that half of it would make a light breakfast; I wasn't remotely hungry after one, the second half was indulgent. The service made the move too. The hostess still recognizes returning customers, and the bigger room finally lets the dining experience breathe. The service at the table could have been a little warmer as we've had it the past, but it is still professional. I was there with two close college buddies, one of whom declared his latte excellent. I keep meaning to get adventurous with the menu, but it is genuinely hard to find a bacon, egg, and cheese toasted this perfectly, and I'd go twice in one day if given the opportunity. 4.8 A full five arrives the day when I can arrive first thing on a Saturday without a 30 minute wait, honestly, it's hard to get a reservation here because of its popularity. Good for them. Cheers to you, Songbird. Dolly would be proud

Overall rating 3.5/5, even though I can't give half stars here on Yelp. One star for ambiance/vibes. This is a gorgeous, quaint little eatery in a lush area of Saint Louis County, right near Grant's Trail. One star for service. My server was a kind lady who made sure I was always doing well and kept my water glass topped off. One star for going above and beyond--I ordered gooey butter cake as a sweet treat and apparently whomever cut the slices made them too small so they gave me two but only charged me for one. Half a star for the gooey butter cake and espresso martini. Neither was the best instance of either I've ever had but they were the best part of the actual meal. Unfortunately, I think I made the wrong entree choice. I went with the biscuit (singular) and gravy and a side of sausage links. The biscuit is described as "jumbo" but didn't feel much bigger than what I'd consider a regular-sized biscuit. It also wasn't nearly as fluffy as I would have liked and was quite tough and hard at points, nearly requiring the use of a knife to cut it. The gravy was relatively flavorless and wasn't improved much by either salt or pepper. The sausage links were passable. I'm willing to give the shop another shot (and order something different) once I try some other brunch places on my list but I was a little disappointed on this visit because I wanted to like my food more.

Service was impeccable from the moment we stepped in. We were brought some warm bread while we looked at the menu. I ordered the N/A West Wnd Botanical spritz and my partner got a dirty martini. At the end, our waitress brought us their chocolate mousse with a candle to celebrate. Truly the best mousse we've ever tried. We were both very impressed with the food and service. The outside is very unassuming; I'd driven by this place sooooo many times and never even noticed that it was a diner! It looks just like many old-timey STL buildings which just adds to the charm. Once you walk in, it's like teleporting to the past. It isn't fancy, but it is packed (and rightfully so). It was just myself when I went, so I was able to be immediately sat at the bar which was a nice surprise considering it was packed on a holiday (Labor Day) morning. The server was very nice and attended to whatever I needed efficiently despite juggling a lotta different folks. For the food & drinks, I started off with a nice cold brew. I didn't love the taste, as it was almost tea-esque, but to be fair I don't drink a lot of cold brew so maybe that's just how it is. I decided to get some Sopapillas as an appetizer as I'd heard they were good and they definitely did not disappoint. They arrived very quickly, were hot out of the fryer, and tasted amazing! They were pillowy soft and just sweet enough while not being overbearing. I added a little honey on top and it was like I was in heaven. There were 5 in the order and I had to stop myself after quickly devouring 3 within 2 minutes. That's how good they were. Onto my entree, I went with the Breakfast Burrito with homemade sausage. I am a big breakfast burrito guy, and a pretty tough critic, but I've gotta say that this was one of the best breakfast burritos I've had in recent years for sure. There was just enough cheese to add flavor and make it the perfect texture without being too much. The sausage had an incredible flavor that complemented the egg, home fries, and chiles perfectly. After devouring half of the burrito in under 90 seconds, I once again had to restrain myself and opted to take my leftover home before I made some really good but bad decisions (aka eating wayyyy too much). Overall, I really enjoyed my experience here. The vibes & food were immaculate despite the location and decor feeling very unassuming. I'd be excited to come back and try some of their other popular dishes, and I'll be sure to bring along some friends to share the experience next time!
