You can't beat the view. We had a second floor ocean view and it was wonderful to sit on the deck and relax while watching the boats and listening to the waves crash onto the shore. The location was very convenient to to all of the restaurants, stores and Acadia National Park. The room was big and nice. Like every hotel I have ever been in they don't pay attention to the details, though. The ceiling fan, base boards and back of lamp could use a dusting. The free breakfast was good but I got tired of eating muffins and bread after three days (there was also cereal, hard boiled eggs and fruit). Can't believe they had a tip jar, though. They do not have to cook anything and you bus your own table. We took advantage of the outside jacuzzi. The staff were friendly and efficient. read more

Originally booked for one night and wanted to change to two nights the day before check in. No issues there. Reservations dept made the changes and all appeared well. Checked in the first night with no issues and no information that we would have to change rooms the next day. Wasn't told that either when changing the reservation. After checking in at the front desk we were told we would be in the Newport building. Not a far walk or drive to the Newport building from the office but it was dark (6:30pm). The Newport building rooms face the parking lot. Good luck trying to read the room numbers at night. We literally to walk up the stairs to the rooms in order to read the numbers. Yes there was lighting but it was very dim that added with the fact that it was raining it didn't make for a good time. The first room was fine no issues but not worth the price of $309 for one night with no views other than the parking lot. After getting settled in the room we decided to go to the main area where the shoppes and restaurants were. Any way you decided to walk was poorly lit. Poorly lit areas are where most of the crimes occur especially to women. The Inn should consider appropriately lighting the area not only for their guests security but for their safety too. It's easy to trip on a rock or step in a pothole there especially on a rainy night. The next day after speaking with several different front desk personnel our only choice was to move to a different room or go somewhere else. Being that there was a MDI marathon this weekend everything was booked. So we packed our stuff and stored it in the car. We were also told there would be a discount giving on the second room rate due to the inconvenience. Finally around early afternoon the front desk called and said the room was ready. Great so we got the new room keys and went to the room. Found a nice dead wasp on the bed underneath the pillow along with dirt on the bed. We didn't bother calling and complaining because there were two beds in the room so we used the other and from the current experience with the Inn felt it was more trouble than it was worth. The final morning checked out and asked about the discount to the room rate we were promised due to the major inconvenience of having to move. We were not giving any discounts because they "determined" we were informed prior to check in about the move. It's not about the discount it's about the principal of the matter. Wow - well I determined that this place was absolutely the worst experience ever. Yes it has a convenient location and an awesome view the cruise ships parked in the port, that is if you like staring at cruise ships instead of beautiful open water views. Bar Harbor itself was great. Neat shoppes. Great food. Nice people. But we will never return just due to this experience. So before you book ask yourself do you really need to stay in a pricey place like the Bar Harbor Inn where service sucks, the property is dated, unsafe at night - and you probably won't be spending much time in the room anyways. This is a really great place for breakfast. The view from the dining room balcony is spectacular . Quality and variety of food quite good. Service is attentive. If you look at the harbor, you will likely see the reputedly only 4-mast schooner in the US or even the world either in sail or in anchor. Bar Harbor may have been a bit of a disappointment if it wasn't for Bar Harbor Inn. It was the quintessential coastal spot between an amazing national park, great food...but a very touristy area. This hotel maintained that small town feeling we wanted. Amenities were great, but the staff is what made our weekend. They make you feel like you are at home and so comfortable to enjoy yourself. Make sure to do the sunset cruise, happy hour and a dinner in the Reading Room. Only let down was the continental breakfast, as it was 50% sweets and lacked on protein options. read more

The Harbor Inn is beautiful and the grounds are gorgeous. While we didn't stay in the hotel, we stopped for cocktails at the Terrace Inn. We went up to the host, Alex who seemed to not care we were there. When we asked for seats at the end of the terrace he said no. He then sat someone there a minute later. We heard him interact with another customer and it he gave them attitude as well. He is rude, has no personality and his manager needs to teach him how to greet customers. We were in Bar Harbor,Maine for a getaway (originally from NJ) and we decided to dine here on my B'day. The place is extravagant and very very very classy. The restaurant looks over the Harbor's waterfront and the view from there is simply breathtaking. The ambience is pleasant and the pianist adds to the elaborate experience of dinning here. The staff is very attentive and friendly. The drinks were fantastic too, the Maine blueberry martini is a must have. The food was amazing too! I had the grilled chicken and my husband had the out of shell lobster. I was very happy with my meal but I had to take a star away because my husband was not very pleased with the portion of his meal. No doubt the prices at an extravagant place like this would be high because of the whole experience they provide but his meal's proportion was undoubtedly small for the price we paid. Again I was happy with my Tiramisu but my husband's chocolate dessert was not very appealing to him. read more

Great location within town. We walked to restaurants and shopping multiples times per day and we were able to leave our car parked right in front of our unit. This is probably the biggest advantage of the hotel to us. The main building has a nice history and is very well kept. However, the individual rooms are a bit dated and feel like a 3 star hotel. Linens and towels aren't high quality for example. Swimming pool area has great views of the ocean and are a nice amenity. We had dinner reservations at Tiller but after walking through the town on the first day we decided to cancel because we preferred to dine casually at local restaurants with upscale cuisine. read more

Nice place to enjoy our first dinner in Maine this year. The lobster dinner is a good value and very tasty. The Asian shrimp was also nice-a bit lighter. A good selection of blueberry themed drinks was lovely-from cocktails to beer you can enjoy these yummy berries in a variety of liquid forms. And be sure to leave room for dessert-we had the blueberry pie and the banana bread pudding-a tasty way to top off a nice meal in a lovely setting. My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights and we were glad we did. The Inn was located right in town and you don't have to worry about a car. You can walk to everything. Tours, shops, restaurants, bars, etc. The main part of the Inn is beautiful. Updated, charming, and with a large fireplace in the lobby. There was a 24/7 coffee, tea, and hot chocolate station. We booked a room in the Ocean Front which overlooked Frenchman's Bay. If you can afford to do it, you'll be happy you did. Spectacular views, quiet, and peaceful. You'll love the cruise ships that anchor in Frenchman's Bay and you can walk the 3/4 mile path outside the hotel and along the water. The Ocean Front was set back from the main road as well as the main part of the Inn. Does the Ocean Front building need some updating? Yes. And it's going to get it shortly. The updates were ongoing. The rooms were updated but the building itself and the breakfast room needed a makeover. We were disappointed with the complimentary breakfast that was served each morning. Lots of muffins, bagels, breads, pastries, and fruit. Some of the fruit was canned and mixed in with the fresh fruit. Not a big selection if you're gluten free. There were no warm dishes. No waffles, pancakes, bacon, eggs, etc. For the amount of money these rooms cost, we expected a better breakfast. We had breakfast out for three of those mornings. There were really good options in town. The staff inside the main Inn was very friendly, polite, and warm. We can't say the same for everyone else. We witnessed a maintenance employee pushing a lawnmower almost run over an elderly man who had been leaning up against a fence. It was scary. The maintenance employee stopped right at the elderly man's shoe which caught his attention. We also witnessed a waitress from the Terrace Grill being rude to a customer/tourist whose first language wasn't English. The woman in charge of the breakfast room saw us many times but never addressed us or anyone. Overall, we would go back in a second. There's a pool, spa, fitness center, and many other things to make your stay memorable. The views, the charm, and the location were second to none. read more

Came to the Bar Harbor Inn for lunch after taking a walking tour of Bar Harbor. The patio seating overlooking the water is what drew us there. I had a bowl of New England Clam chowder. It consisted of mostly broth with very few clam or potato pieces. To make it worse, it was barely warm, not hot. Worse clam chowder I've had anywhere, let alone in New England. My wife had a lobster roll. It was made up of shredded lobster and had very little favor. In addition never the waiter or the host were even a slight bit friendly. We would have been better off elsewhere or even back on the ship! The day before, in Portland,we had lunch at DiMillo's. We both had the lobster roll and it was outstanding. It had medium size pieces of lobster and had a brown butter aioli sauce. It was delicious. The entire staff was very friendly. read more

Not worth the money. This is high cost and rooms are just okay. The view and balcony is great but for a high cost stay you would think they would upgrade their toilet paper and tissues to something somewhat better than tissue paper. Our favorite part was the infinity pool but it really had a ton of chemicals in it. The bathroom is tub with shower curtain. Not my favorite and air conditioning is not real AC. It is not central. The worst experience was eating for our special anniversary dinner at the hotels Reading Room. It's a beautiful dining room but that was definitely the highlight. The food was just okay and staff was terrible. Felt like the waiter was almost making fun of us and was very flippant. Not engaging or trying to make it a great experience at all. Do not stay in a bottom floor room of the Newport building. I can not stress this enough. The mildew smell at times was overwhelming. The back part of the room is underground and there is a built in dehumidifier along that wall that runs continuously. I can't imagine what the smell would be like if it didn't. Our room had two queen beds and we started in the one closest to the back wall and had to move to the other because the mattress and linen had the mildew smell to it. The room was also desperately in need of an update. The Inn itself is in a fantastic location within walking distance to everything. The grounds are just lovely and every staff member we encountered were very friendly and helpful. There is a really good variety of options in the complimentary continental breakfast, much more than other places. I may consider staying here again, but would have to try one of the other room options, which comes at a much higher cost. read more

Stayed here a few nights about a week ago. Stayed in the third floor Lodge room. And the view was beyond spectacular. Got a package deal with the breakfast included and dinner and a two hour cruise on the Margaret Todd schooner. The food and atmosphere are excellent. The staff are extremely friendly and polite as well. The only regret that I had was that I did not stay longer. But next time I will not make that mistake. If you want a beautiful nice place to stay with great food and service the Bar Harbor Inn is the place to go. The Inn also has a beautiful little gift shop. Also everything you need is within walking distance from the inn. The stores around the area are also very nice they have a lot to choose from. Also while you are here don't forget to go to Arcadia national Park a lot to see and do there too. read more

While we have enjoyed this restaurant in the past our most recent visit was slightly disappointing. Portion sizes have gotten smaller and menu options are not as varied. Deserts seemed of the frozen variety with a lack luster presentation. Lobster dish I was served simply had no taste. We will go back again because this has been one of our favorite restaurants but we hope their next performance is much improved. On a separate note, we had a guest pianist from China with us and we requested at 9:55 pm if she could play the piano. She was denied the request even though the restaurant was empty! Love this place! BUT it depends on what location you stay at here. We stayed on the waterfront, of course you pay for the view but hey that's what vacations are about! Waking up to a water view, the sounds of the oceans, birds and lobsterboats was so relaxing! And the smell of the ocean...ahhh just what the doctor ordered. The room was great. Excellent decor and upscale linings. The beds where good. But what steals the show was the private porch. Grab a cup of coffee in the morning and some continental breakfast bring it back to your room and relax in your chairs with the feet up soaking up the sun and relax. I'd absolutely stay here again on the waterfront lodges. I can't speak for the other parts of the property so this review is solely based on this alone. read more

We stayed here last year when we visited Bar Harbor, Maine. It was a lovely place right on the cliff of the harbor. The location is quite nice. It's nested in the downtown of the small but charming city of Bar Harbor. There're quite a few seafood restaurants close by in the area. You can just walk from the hotel to the town to shop or eat. We got a room that was facing the ocean, which was awesome. The big window is directly facing the the bed. So when you wake up, you can see the sun and the ocean. I got up super early the next morning to see the run rise. It was one of the most spectacular sun rises I've seen in my life. I think our stay was well worth it just because of that! :) We went there in slow season. So a few restaurants in the town were closed. If you go there in the summer high time, you might want to make reservation of the hotel ahead of time, since it might get busy. read more

I think this beautiful cape cod hotel is a bit under estimated. The staff is beyond nice and extremely helpful. As soon and I arrived the friendly front desk staff helped my mom and I tremendously. We received a gorgeous room with a view of the sea. I loved sitting on our balcony in the morning with my coffee and reading. We also had a fabulous lunch in the dinning room. Beautiful hotel on the water, great rooms with lots of accommodations and a pleasant staff. Nice little lobby to sit in and drink a free coffee/tea/hot chocolate. Nice place. Grounds are beautiful and the view from the Terrace Grille was wonderful. The Terrace Grille overlooks Frenchman's Bay and the Porcupine Islands and the harbor is busy with boats of every type. We sat and had a few drinks and snacked as we watched the afternoon slip away. The Terrace Grille is located sort of behind the inn (at the downtown end of West Street) and overlooking the town pier as well as the harbor. We had the lobster roll which was decent and the clam chowder which was also good. We didn't stay here (they were booked) but we'll definitely be back! This review is purely based on the Bar Harbor Inn Restaurant and specifically regarding dessert. I've had a lot of desserts over the years from places all over the country, but even now, I remember the chocolate lava cake I had here. Despite a lot of restaurants offering their rendition of a chocolate lava cake, I consider most to be underwhelming and forgetful. The simplicity of a chocolate lava cake requires an attention to detail to really deliver something that is, in my opinion, great. The chocolate lava cake from the Bar Harbor Inn was spectacular. The dome shaped treat had a perfectly moist cake with a slight crunch from the outer layer of the cake that really defined what should be expected in a lava cake. Then your fork cuts into the gooey, chocolaty center that slowly begins to ooze out of the cake. It wasn't only the texture, but the flavor. The combination of the chocolate cake, drizzle, and filling came together in your mouth to create a chocolate that wasn't too sweet nor too bitter. I don't know if they still offer this dessert, but I know if they do, I'll will be returning solely based on that cake. read more

I typically don't write bad reviews , but in this case I felt my experience was so egregiously bad , that it merited a comment ... I have been staying at the Bar Harbor Inn for years in November since I typically go to Acadia National Park for a day of hiking around Veterans Day ... I have always been happy with the BHI due to its great views , cleanliness , good beds , and good showers ; that's all I'm looking for . I made a reservation on Tuesday Nov 8 for a one night stay , and went up there on the morning of Nov 9 . After a hard day of hiking , I showed up at the Inn in the late afternoon , and was informed that there was no water . I was told they had called my home in the morning ; my wife couldn't get in touch with me since I had the cellphone off. The front desk verified that they had found out from the town that there'd be problems with the water on the previous Sunday , yet NO ATTEMPT was made to get in touch with me until the morning of the day I was supposed to show up . They told me I 'fell through the cracks'. I was exhausted so I stayed at the inn , having been told that the water situation would be fixed by around 6 pm . The water finally came on at 9:30 . I will no longer be staying at the Bar Harbor Inn, as there are other nice hotels open at that time . Hopefully , they will have better customer service. read more

Let me start off: the property is beautiful, in an amazing location, and no one can complain about a November hot tub. But I was sorely disappointed in a few other things. The room we received was technically a conjoined room, which we did not use for our own party. This is my biggest complaint. The conjoined rooms offered little noise cancellation. We could hear everything our neighbors did, including slamming doors late at night, well past 12am. We planned some sunrise activities and the lack of sleep put a damper on our experience. You could easily see the light coming from their room under the door as well. The toilet ran every 15 minutes all day and night. The heater was also very loud (I'm not sure there is anything they can do about that, but it made it impossible to sleep with the heat on). The room book said there were wine corkers at the concierge, but when we asked, we were told they didn't have anymore. This should be standard in all rooms. We went out and bought our own. Add this to your packing list as well. The bar area is small and crowded and should be expanded into the dining room to offer more seating. There is a daily happy hour until 5pm and you can charge to the room. The ice and water machines outside our building did not work. While this is not the biggest issue, the water here tastes horribly. Do yourself a favor and buy some bottled water ahead of time. The continental breakfast was surprisingly great, but did not have any allergen warnings, especially for tree nuts in the granola. This is a huge misstep and I am surprised that somewhere this nice would miss it. The coffee was terrible. Additionally, there are few tables and on our second morning we struggled to find a place to sit and eat. The property is beautiful and I am grateful that we stayed here, but honestly expected a better experience. Our biggest negative was the conjoined room door, lack of attention on allergens at breakfast, and the ice machine not working, especially with how bad the water tastes here. It is nearly un-drinkable from the tap. Finally, since we were traveling during the off-season, we were given a phone call ahead of our stay to say that the dining room would be closed for reservations and that a list of local restaurants that were still open would be given. We did not receive this. While the call was appreciated, I wish they would have followed through with the promise. Overall lovely place that needs some tweaks. read more
