This place is amazing. They have every sort of ingredient, bitter, aromatic and utensil you can imagine, all to make a great cocktail. In addition, they have a very impressive stock of products (ranging from the hard to get, to exclusive and to just plain tasty). The staff is well versed and very knowledgeable. In the past, I've bought a few bottles and friends were impressed. So why the 2 stars? Well . . . if you know cocktails and liquor or even what you are looking for, then this is definitely a 5 star place. Alas, I am just an average joe learning to appreciate what this type of store has to offer. This store isn't the kind of place to learn or ask average joe questions. If you do, you may end up feeling that there is such a think as a stupid question. This is not the place to ask "what is good" or "what is interesting". This is the place to come once you've done your research or looking for something specific. Think Julia Roberts going shopping in Pretty Woman (the before, not the after). That's the big difference. But hey, it's not the store or the staff (and really I've shopped here a couple of times with specific questions and have gotten great advice). The merchandise is meant for the serious liquor connoisseurs. If you want to ask questions, learn about liquor or don't care about leveraging the Sunset Blvd's Bar Keeper name, go to Silverlake Wine (very helpful although the selection will be limited) or Topline (not as brand conscious or exclusive, but you will feel okay about any questions). read more

Since getting their liquor license some really interesting buys have hit the shelves. This is a bad review solely because of service. Had I gotten past the up-nosed staff that work here I might have gotten to experience their seemingly great selection of products. But unfortunately the staff was rude and pointed me away because I wasn't a whiskey snob like them. I really do love the store. They have great barware, spirits, books, and bitters that you won't find elsewhere. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Now, on the subject of price, I don't mind paying more for rare items, but I don't think I quite realized the magnitude of their markups until today when I bought a bottle of bitters for $28 and then found the same bottle at K&L for $17. I can understand small fluctuations in price from place to place, but a 65% margin with respect to a competitor seems out of line. I could be wrong, but it seems like it might be more profitable for both bar keeper and its customers to bring the price closer to the natural and market value, at least for items where they have brick and mortar competitors. read more

They've got all sorts of glassware, napkins, spoons, mixers, bitters, shakers, and everything else you didn't realize you needed. A much better selection than you'd ever find at Crate and Barrel. One of the few awesome little shops on the west end of Sunset in Silverlake, .. BAR KEEPER! These guys have a GREAT little shop if you're into upper end cocktails & prefer to use better ingredients than Rose's Lime Cordial (blechh) and a broader spectrum of Bitters aside from the typical Angostura.. The folks that run the place are VERY nice and always willing to help with what you're looking for. Myself, I am a tropical drink whore.. yes, WHORE. I love my Tiki drinks and after years of making them, I finally get most of my mixers here as they carry the Trader Tiki's syrups! Amazing grenadine, falernum, don's spice mix, orgeat, ..everything. They also have a liquor license now i believe and sell some high end booze! On that same note, they also help you, or have already made some amazing gift boxes with little starter kits that are GREAT presents. I have purchased one w/ Old Fashioned stuff, so it had a rye whisky, orange bitters, etc. VERY nice! So head on down to the Bar Keeper and take a look for yourself. LOTS to see here. read more

I'm glad this place exists, as I am a lover of well mixed Tiki drinks, however I didn't find anything I just had to have at the high prices they are asking. Very cool place with every bitter you could possibly imagine (which are fairly expensive really). There is also a wide variety of hard to find liqueurs and reasonably priced barware. They also have a cool selection of chemistry equipment including Erlenmeyer flasks and beakers. There were 2 gentlemen running the shop when I went, one was very helpful, the other seemed slightly put out about being there. I stood in front of the wall of bitters for sometime trying to make a decision and wound up picking a variety pack because no help was forthcoming. I also picked up a 1000mL Erlenmeyer flask because it was really good price for a nice piece of glassware. read more

Mixology has always been my weekend hobby since mixin' martinis through college. I just happened to stumble upon this shop, and I must say I felt like a grown up kid in a candy store. Joe the owner knows his shee-it! There are more bitters than I could imagine, on top of a great selection of very sweet vintage hi-ball serving sets. He also has an excellent selection of organic vodka's and super delish liqueurs (my fav - St. Germain). Can't wait to make the trek back for some more mixology inspiration. read more

I did the vast majority of my Holiday shopping here this year! LOVE this place for gifts, and also to just hang out and learn about alcohol. It's easy to find a cool gift for just about everyone, even those who don't drink alcohol. They have an awesome selection of glassware and hostess gifts. They will even put a basket together for you, and wrap your gifts in colorful tissue. They place is always busy, and still there is always a helpful customer service person available to help out. If you are a secret agent that likes his/her martinis shaken and not stirred you gotta get some of your bar gear at Bar Keeper. So walking into the place is a bit intimidating (the sales person will *not* make eye contact with you, you are not allowed to use your cell phone and you cannot ask any questions - unless you want to be met with scrutiny). The price of the ish there is way up there - but who doesn't need titanium wine glasses (I mean seriously - how can you do without). For serious drinkers, ONLY. This place has things that you didn't even know existed for all your bar accessory needs. Also, great decor. read more

Great concept given that the mixed cocktail movement in LA is on fire. Pros: Great selection of Bitters. Good display of merchandise. Cons: Some items are a bit pricy. This place is amazing. I went there "just to window shop" and $500 later here I am! The bitters selection alone is reason to come here. They probably have over 200 craft bitters to choose from. From Serrano Chili bitters to Mexican Chipotle and Myer Lemon. It is almost overwhelming but the guys in the store are super helpful. We got to chatting about different alcohols and they made some great recommendations. On top of that they have a great selection of bitters that they allow you to taste. The whole experience was very cool even if you don't want to buy anything you can spend an hour in there just checking different stuff out. My only gripe would be the parking. There really isn't any, but hey it is Sunset Blvd in the heart of Silverlake so that is to be expected. read more

What a disappointment. Each and every time. I've tried going back a couple of times after what I assumed was a perfectly understandable stressful holiday season in the middle of a pandemic. (On that occasion, the staff was at the end of the season, downtrodden, and with each customer that was being let in, who would kindly ask the staff how they are today, they'd script back, "Oh we're not doing that well, we're drained, we're weary.") (And I think many of us have been incredibly understanding, because we ALL FEEL THAT). However, after the season came to pass, I went back in for a few odds and ends. And it was terrible every time. Dismissive. Impatient. No time for suggestions or recommendations. When I was admiring some of their vintage swizzle sticks, I assumed the staffer was being helpful when he suggested I pull the bowl out from the shelf to get a better look at them. So I did. But then he scrutinized how I was browsing the sticks, and began chuckling at how I was looking at them one by one, and began bounding over for it/me, saying "Here, let me show you what to do..." And I said no thank you and left. I'd love that same level of tentativeness applied to some of these other customer reviewers who just wanted your help picking out a really lovely bottle of rum. Some Yelpers out there may be, like myself, baccanalians of the exotic sort. If a nice Amarro (no, NOT AMARETTO!), Eier Liqueur or fine obscure cognac really floats your eipcurean boat, then you really deserve to spend a good 20 minutes at Bar Keeper if you are passing through the Silver Lake neighborhood. Sure, a good liquor store will make sure to have an amarro, but 5 varieties? Unimaginable!!! And so it was here that I finally got the nerve to purchase my first bottle of the legendary spirit known as Absinthe. Apparently, the name derives from the French term, "herbe sante", or sacred herb, this wildly popular spirit was barred from these shores for around a century. Recently, however, I was made aware that this favored drink of famed literati such as Oscar Wilde was finally available to Homo Americanus for purchase! Here they had SIX different brands, to boot! Granted, being of impecunious means, I bought the least expensive brand and have been enjoying nursing a glass of it each night hence. So, you will find a VERY SMALL BUT AMAZING COLLECTION of fine spirits already preselected by the owner. In addition to the aforementioned, they include single malt scotches, Bourbons, rye, tequilla and few others. Also, if you are in the market for bar accoutrements, this is what they are most known for and have a delightful selection of such items. Go. You'll have fun, you'll be enlightened and, in the end, you'll eventually get sauced by a new friend in liquid form. read more

Cheap price for rare spirits. Not a place for supermarket level alcohol. By rare spirit I mean it - I found the best tequila and single melts here. If you are looking for top ones that are not displayed in store ask the store keeper to order them.
