Outstanding bar, great bartenders. Stopped by on a night we wanted to have a drink and chill ended up seeing a whole burlesque show. Their happy hour menu has a great setup!

A place to chill and take it easy. Best to probably call about the hours because we're here now and it's supposed to be closed according to the hours posted. The Amazing April will fix you up a savory drink or any of their fantastic bartenders. It says food but sadly no food. Course who knows where the heck it could be made. The only cooking here are the drinks that are on fire. Atmosphere is really nice. It's like the coffee shop vibe of Friends and the friendliness of Cheers. The parking is on the street so just be prepared. Nice artwork. Even some you can purchase.

When I go to a place for the first time I can become nervous and anxious. I would be best served if I just allowed myself to surrender to the moment. A place like Bar Ludivine has a very specific patron in mind. The decor is very simply stated but elegant. The antique velour sofa with pillows with cats. The high tables candle lit. The choice of 90's and an early 2000's mixtape playlist as background music. Yes it is shabby chic but with a modern flair. This is not a "Happy Hour at Taco Cabana" type of bar. Its intended audience is a sophisticated and more mature demographic. A bar certainly meant for date night or someone rummaging through a Schopenhauer book. But to the mechanics of this bar. It is located in Southtown a few doors down from Taco Haven. The place is really small, intimate and charming. On the drink end they have spirits, wines and beer. The mixologist, who happens to be the principle owner serves up drinks and will take your order from your table. Although they have a small paper menu with signature cocktails he can make you just about anything. Here is where I must interject. If you're expecting a bartender from your corner cantina this is not that place. He serves you and then let's you carry on a conversation with your company. Maybe patrons will confuse that with inattentiveness. I interpreted that as being the utmost professional as a person who takes their craft very seriously. Two or three things I must implore to you. Since it is on a strip of South Presa that has finite parking I can already forsee this as an issue in the future. Secondly they don't serve any food, which would automatically bump this review to a four and a half stars. And lastly this place is not cheap. I'm a beer drinker and seven dollars even for craft beer not in a restaurant setting is a little pricey. Then again a date night, an opportunity to see live music or even an after dinner cocktail are not casual affairs. Not to say that a suit with matching ascot is the preferred attire here. I might turn my head twice if I saw someone wearing a "King Diamond" tshirt and dangling earrings at a table though. Ludivine, which is a French name that means "Friend of the people." At that capacity it does share those sensibilities. The choice of antiques, the shabby chic decor and the elegant chandelier all say I'm here for a sophisticated experience. From the glassware to the presentation of drinks the cultured, mature patron is definitely kept in mind. Southtown is filled with unique experiences both big and small. If you happen to be in this area and were on a date night, left a Broadway play or had a Hemingway book on hand I would recommend it. The service is excellent, the drinks are made by someone who takes his craft seriously and the ambiance is otherworldly. It is pricey but on a beautiful Friday night you are totally worth it.

Only had one drink there, but enjoyed the atmosphere. It was very relaxed with an engaging band playing. We ordered our drinks at the bar and were able to sit and relax on a red velvet couch. Looked like they had a full bar and there were food stands on the street. Enjoyed being able to relax and enjoy the live music.

Such a cozy environment. Really great neighborhood bar, I enjoyed the vibe. They made an amazing French 75 with a rose pedal in it! :') I wish I got a photo of that. It was delicious! They have karaoke some nights. Cool spot. Hit or miss crowd.

I really enjoyed my visit. I attended a Burlesque show on a Friday evening and loved it. I had to message them on Instagram for an rsvp. Be warned that the reservations fill up fast. If you don't score a reservation they release the seats for the no shows right before the show begins, so there is no guarantee you will get a seat. In the meantime you have to wait outside to prevent them going over capacity. The show was amazing though and worth standing for. Their drinks are really good and they have some pretty good creations. Definitely check this place out.

Dark, intimate place with fancy decor, but chill vibes, and lots of seating. They have a couple of local beers on tap, a small wine selection, and then a menu with many classic cocktails plus a couple of their own creations. I went with one of their house libations - emerald dagger. It had both gin and mezcal and I wondered if it would be too much, but it was flavorful and smooth. Even with all the upscale decor, this place gave me divey feels and I loved that juxtaposition.

    Cheers to Bar Ludivine!

This organization should be shut down. Very prejudice and does not have 80% of the wine list they claim.

There was a musician playing on the stage in front of the distillery which is a nice touch for those who want to sit outside. We ordered old fashioned cocktails. I loved that they were made with block ice and even embossed the ice with the Devils River logo. The mixologist explained they don't do smoked old fashions due to fire hazard and location in a historic building. But he still made an engaging presentation in creating our cocktails. There was no food offered but they let us bring in voodoo donuts. The two gentlemen at the bar were very friendly and attentive and made our late night visit a special treat. I'd like to learn on my next visit to see if they do distillery tours. I'm sure you'll enjoy a trip to Devil's River.

Update to first review below, rating updated from a 3 to a 5 star (drinks & bartender would get 10+…read morestars if we could rate that high): Saturday night: Went back for after dinner drinks at the Downstairs (a "speakeasy" throwback, look up the history of the place to see why). Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. (See update above to this review for when we returned the next night for after dinner drinks.)

Whether any of you who are reading this know about the history of the Menger Bar and it's role in Teddy Roosevelt's assemblage of the Roughriders in this particular establishment or not the drink which he had was a mint julep. When I ask for that drink for which The past president was known to imbibe in they did not have the ingredients. That was a disappointment. Beyond my disappointment was the reality of a service establishment that had great personnel that is bartenders who were quite service oriented and given the activity in the bar where quite efficient. I mentioned this to suggest that the ingredients for a drink are as much, a managers, responsibly, bartender, and so in fairness to what I think was exemplary service I certainly did not want my personal disappointment to reflect on how good these bartenders were. The ambience is also wonderful. It is the period appropriate or appears to be appropriate and hence gives you the comfort of being able to visualize Teddy drawing together a group that eventually went on to Victory over the Spanish in Cuba. It is romantic and comfortable. The bartenders explained that the round table at which Roosevelt sat has been moved somewhere within the hotel. This is an experience not to be missed. Nacho just for the historical content of such a visit, but simply for the contemporary service and ambience.
