I absolutely love their pizza, especially the mashed potato and bacon pizza. I do however have an absolutely favorite pizza place, so I've only ever gotten the mashed potato and bacon pizza here and never anything else. I'm also a huge fan of their Damn Good stout, and even came here twice when they turned the back area into a club. However my review loses points when almost every time I go, it takes someone AT MINIMUM, 10-15 minutes to even realize I'm there before I am seated. I am one to also speak up, to which they will walk away and then only 50% of the time come back. This has also happened on occasions when I am by myself or with a small part of 3, and no one else is there. I've only actually been seated at BAR maybe 4 times, but have walked into that location over a dozen times. I also work around the corner, and it's becoming more of a habit to pick other places to eat over them, or trying to get a to go pizza instead of trying to sit and spend more money on drinks. I can only say great things about Bar. Having just moved here this summer from California, I've been touring New Haven with my boyfriend to find some restaurants we can make regular visits to while we're here for school and this place has been my favorite of all the Italian, Mexican, and Asian cuisine restaurants so far. The food: impeccable. Their pizza is so good - thin, greasy, cheesy goodness. They serve it on a giant square platter so the large feeds more than five people comfortably. There was four of us and we had to take home leftovers from the large cheese we got (I'm definitely not complaining!) so the amount of food you get for the reasonable price paid is awesome. Also, you MUST try their salad. As a huge pear/pecan/vinaigrette salad fan, I was in love with this dish! Don't miss it. The atmosphere: really cool. There are different quadrants of this place (a dining room, a bar, a lounge, AND a club area, which provides fun and wild dancing at night) and each one has a unique vibe about it. The dining area we sat in was clean, interesting, and comfortable. Overall the architecture is another don't-miss aspect of this place. The service: definitely not the best I've ever experienced (kind of slow, waitresses dropping a lot of things, not very polite) but it didn't take away from the meal whatsoever. The pizza came out quickly and the salad kept us busy until then. All I have to say is that Bar has been my favorite restaurant so far this summer, and I will definitely be trying each item on their menu (like the potato pizza, oh my) because it's always a trip worth making! read more

Really good pizza in a fun atmosphere with good beer. I was here once years ago during my heavy drinking days & I remember being in the back room. It was a daze but I've recently been back for pizza when the place wasn't crawling with drunks & hipsters. They aren't as popular as Sally's & Pepe's it seems but they still offer good crispy thin crust pizza. I've had the infamous mashed potato pizza & it was pretty good. They don't offer special pizzas but have plenty of topping options available. I follow their Instagram feed where they're always posting something mouth watering. My last trip I tried to replicate a buffalo chicken pizza with blue cheese I saw. Their beer is pretty good. I go for the pizza & the beer is just an added bonus. I can't think of an offering of theirs that blew me away but for $8.50 a flight you can sample them all. I also love the fact that they're open 365 days a year. My first trip was on Christmas Eve where we met my family half way from RI. If I lived closer I'd come on Wednesday nights when Manic Productions promotes free shows. The pizza is beyond amazing, you can't go and won't go wrong with the mash potatoe pizza pie with pepperoni or sausage. The atmosphere is pretty loud even for a Monday and not being at 100 percent occupancy it was up there. The menu is very limited you have the choice of Pizza or Salad. The pizza is made quick so I wouldn't recommend this place for a date night but more so a great after work spot or for the family. I didn't really like this place when I was in law school, because I hated bars as a category, hated loud bars with particular dudgeon, and I didn't think the pizza was all that. But time brings maturity and wisdom, and distance brings perspective, and I have come around. Ignoring the bar aspect and considering this just as a pizza place, it had a crucial advantage over Modern, Sally's, and Pepe's, which is that it is within short walking distance of the Omni and other downtown hotels. You can call in a takeout order before you check in, and wander over and grab it less than 20 minutes later. And the pizza? Pretty darn good. I didn't love the cheese and might even omit it next time, but cherry peppers and eggplants were superb toppings, the eggplant flavorful and tender without being mushy or slimy, the peppers sharp and tart. Actually I can't think of the last time I had a better vegetable topping on a pizza. If you are a local, this is still four stars max, but for scholarly visitors and other guests, it gets five. read more

Came here for lunch and unfortunately they only offer pizza and salad for food. You would have plenty of choices of drinks if you come in the evening for a party or something. I spent 19 dollars in total, including tips. The food portion was super super big. You can see in the picture that the small pizza is so big, I think it is for two people. However I came on my own but the waiter was really nice that he gave me a box for takeaway. The waiter is a really nice guy, though I don't know his name ... While visiting my daughter in grad school at Quinnipiac stopped in for late lunch. Place was packed. Waited about 10 minutes (not a bad wait at all!) for a table. Like a lot of people, I was skeptical about the mashed potato pizza. But after giving it a try, it is clear that whoever came up with this recipe is a genius! Perfectly seasoned with nice chewy crust. I heard it is even better topped with bacon. Bar has a great atmposhere and I love that they are also a brewery. If you like creamy dark stout, give their's a try. The beer makes a perfect combination with the pizza. And they make the pizza in the New Haven tradition, in a super hot oven (wood fired in this case), burned on the edges, chewy, and served on a large metal tray. There is new better pizza than New Haven style "abeez". Some of the pizzas, like the clam pie, are more expensive than necessary. However, all things considered, this is really cool place to have some very special pizza, great beer, and to hang out with friends. P.S. I haven't been to the night club / lounge at night, but I walked through during the day - great hip-urban setup. read more

Over time, I've heard people rave about the mashed potato pizza, so while in town I had to pop in to see if it would live up to it's hype. Came in on a Sunday night and the wait was about 40 minutes, which sucked because I was hungry but good in that it meant that other folks were eager to eat here. After we were seated, I was disappointed to find out that they had run out of clams (that was another recommendation), but we ordered a mashed potato/bacon/mozzarella/mushroom pizza. I'd have to say that it did not disappoint. Even though it was thin crust, the pizza filled me up unlike some other thin crusts, no flavors were extremely overpowering, and the crust wasn't burnt and blackened to a crisp. BAR is an interesting combination of a restaurant, a bar, and a dance club all in separate rooms. It's probably better that way. Restaurant: When it's busy (which is frequently) the wait can be unbearable. My roommate and I tried to go there for dinner last year for her birthday and were told there'd be a 2 hour wait. No thanks. They only take reservations over 10 people. Our group of 7 didn't cut it. When there ISN'T a wait, their staff is...okay. Granted I'm a female and the 'cute young waitresses' don't do it for me, they dress very unprofessionally. I never have any idea who's working there, who's on a break, or who's just a customer passing by. Anyway, their pizza is delicious so that makes it worthwhile to go to. I've mostly eaten there on a weeknight where it's not so busy. I usually just get a regular red pie with mozzerella. It's a little pricey, but usually you're splitting the cost with friends and if you're eating there alone, well it's really easy to make friends by bribing them with pizza. Bar: The layout of this room is terrible. There are 4 super long picnic-type tables in here which make it awkward if your party is only of 2. I've been yelled at to move more than once due to an unknown reservation. There's also a pool table in the room, also poorly placed as there's not much "milling around" room and the little room there is is prime "get-poked-in-the-face-with-a-pool-cue" space. Space between the bar and the dance club area: During dinner time, they put additional tables in this area and there are built in couches. It's a cozy area but the downside is it's in the same spot as the bathrooms. Not inherently bad (there's no smell, nothing "feels" gross) but all the same, you're eating dinner right next to a bathroom. Club: Decently sized club with an additional bar, a giant color-changing column, and a weird small room with a low ceiling and couch-like flooring. I've gone here strictly for dancing and I've gotten tired of the music. I like a DJ who picks a new set each time he or she DJs and I'd always hear that same stupid "dance" remix of You Shook Me All Night Long or something by Bon Jovi. No. Stop that. When I go to a club, I don't wanna hear AC/DC. Overall there are a few reasons to visit - you CAN dance, the pizza IS good, and people usually seem content with drinks. Bar is one of the most interesting restaurants I have been to, with great ambiance and delicious food. It looks a bit sketchy from the outside, but has character inside. It's dimly lit and has a wide variety of seating options. The noise level wasn't too bad for a bar, and since it's on Yale campus, the other restaurant patrons were people of good company. We didn't have a reservation, and we went around 6:30. It was packed! We waited half an hour for a booth seat for 3 people. We ordered and the food arrived pretty quickly. Make sure you make a reservation if you're going during dinner rush hour. The food was amazing. We went at the suggestion of a friend and ordered a small mashed potato and bacon pizza with white sauce and a small chicken and broccoli pizza with red sauce. The pizzas were huge. Each small pizza came with 8 slices and we still had around 4 slices leftover after our meal. Our waitress was also very friendly. All in all, Bar is a must-try if you're visiting New Haven! Our friends had been here a few times, so we let them do the ordering. We went with the the house salad and a pepperoni and sausage pizza. I'm usually pretty traditional when it comes to New Haven pizza; tomatoes, mootz and basil. However, they nailed it with the sausage and pepperoni. Came because I heard about the mashed potato bacon pizza and I just had to try it. We came on a Wednesday night around 7:30pm and it was crowded which seemed surprising to me. But it's also the holiday time and this seems like a good place for people to just chill after work. When you walk in, there is a bar side and a restaurant side as well as a place for takeouts in the back. We put our names down on the restaurant side and waited about 30 minutes before being seated. While waiting, one of our friends grabbed a beer from the bar. If you don't want to wait and you are lucky enough to find a seat on the bar side, then you can order pizza straight from the bar. Between 4 people, we ordered 2 medium pies- one white pie with mozzarella, mashed potato, bacon pizza and one red pie with mozzarella basil and pepperoni pizza. While the mashed potato bacon pizza was good, I found myself loving the basil pepperoni pizza better! I don't know what kind of special fresh basil they used, but pizza had a really strong basil flavor which I liked a lot. Portions were really big and definitely worth the price. BAR was great. Went to New Haven on a mission to try some new spots as I always just hit Pepe's when I'm passing through. We got the bacon & mashed potato on white pie, and a garlic and fried eggplant on red. The bacon mashed potato one was one of those "you gotta try it" even though it didn't necessarily call out to us. It was good. Definitely good! I could see it being even better if you've drank a bunch and have those late night munchies. For us, we felt like as good as it was, it would have been nice to just have a slice or two and leave it at that. It was a little too much/too heavy and again -- it was GOOD, but a pie was a little much. The fried eggplant and garlic on red however was insanely good! We're still talking about it. Perfect combination of classic flavors and there were zero leftovers I can assure you. Our server was a nice guy, and the homebrew drafts (Hopology I think?) were great too. We were there around 8 or 9 on a Saturday night - walked out JUST as it was getting really insane, line-out-the-door dance-club level. I used to love this place but they have become truly painful. I ordered a medium pizza that cost $42 (yes it was a special but it wasn't THAT special!). I asked if they could cut make it in the rectangular pan that is used when you eat in vs the round pan for take out. I knew that it wouldn't fit properly in the box for takeout but was ok with that. They still wouldn't do it even though it would have been no effort for them. For such an unbelievably expensive pizza, it's too bad they would not be willing to take a small step that would cost them nothing and would make their customer happy. Plus the pizza was burnt so tasted terrible anyway. Honestly just way too much attitude and seriously too expensive. I was not happy with the pizza here. I'm not a huge New Haven pizza fan, but I've had much better at other places nearby. This pizza was so thin I practically needed 3 hands to hold it, and once it got a bit cooler it got really brittle. We were in large group and got a few large pizzas (red cheese, bacon, mashed potato, and white cheese). I tried all of them, they were fine. The last one I had was the white cheese, and I realized what the first three were missing (and the white one had): seasoning. I don't see the appeal of this place or this pizza. Bar pizza is great for seating large parties! My friends called in to reserve for a party of 10 on a Wednesday night for 7:30pm. We then had to change it because more friends were coming and we had to change it to 15. They had no issues changing it to this large size party! Most places would not do that for you. The ambience is great If you're looking for a good night out. There's two bars that you can go to and there's two rooms for seating to order pizza. This place is huge I don't think I got to explore all of it! The pizza was not as good as Sally's, Frank Pepe, Or modern but its still a good thin crust pizza. I don't get the hype about the mashed potato bacon pizza but I'm not a huge fan of mashed potatoes to begin with. We came here for their famous mashed potato pizza. With 3 teenaged girls in tow, did we have a choice? The pies were large oval shaped monstrosities. The New Haven styled thin crust was excellent, reminiscent of Pepe's: perfectly charred and flavorful. The mashed potato pizza is pretty much what you'd imagine it to be: mash potato on a white pizza. Elemental. Dollops of the taters. Fortunately, the mash was creamy and it was lighter than anticipated. The addition of bacon was fine, for smokey and textural contrast, but was too salty. The spinach and broccoli pie was good. Same excellent crust, but the sauce was pedestrian, lacking in the freshness and bright flavors that was in Pepe's. Salad was a wilted uninspired merging of greens, pear slices, candied walnuts and a forgettable dressing. Service was generally helpful, and patient with our kids. read more

This was my first experience with New Haven style pizza and I really liked it. The crust is super thin, thinner than any place I've ever been to possibly. The middle slices did get quite floppy from the thinness but I did not mind that. The toppings were very fresh and of good quality. We got spinach and bacon and they used fresh spinach and thick cut bacon. It was also nice to find out that this place is a brew pub. They have their own fresh microbeers. I enjoyed my pale ale. 1.) Introduction/Background: I came here to see a friend of mine play a gig here. I figured this was an excellent opportunity to check out the food and everything else that people raved about on Yelp. 2.) Aesthetics: Inside is like a modern art masterpiece. Every room differs in looks. The performance/dance room looks like a living space, like apartments and dorms with beds, rooms with Venetian blinds and stair cases. The bathroom looks a little modern. Then I believe to see vats for either beer, wine or spirits. This place has a really cool eclectic kind of feel. 3.) Food and drinks: The pizza was okay. I'm sorry, I don't know what all the rave was about. I'm from NY and I like thin crust pizza. Their thin crust pizza tastes like cardboard with no flavor. I had the bacon and broccoli pizza along with the mashed potato pizza. I thought the bacon pizza to be better than the mashed potato. Every bite of that mashed potato was basically a raw ball of garlic. I may have been hungry, but if I went there on a not so ravenous, not so beer filled belly, I would have thought that pizza was putrid. I tried two brews that night: 1.) the Damn Good Stout and 2.) the AmBAR Ale. They Both tasted so yummy. 4.) Extra Info: There were 4 bands playing, 1 of them was my friend. They were all great folk artists. 5.) Impressions: I didn't get the full service experience because the food was already at the table once i got there. By default we got hooked up because myself including everyone at the table were associated to our friend, the artist performing.. So free food and drinks for us. I'll be honest, regardless if it was free, I still don't think the pizza is all that its cracked up to be. The beer and the layout of the place were cool, though. I would eat and drink again at Bar any day! It's a very cool atmosphere during the dinner hour: chill staff, nice wood decor, vats (for beer, maybe?). The cocktails are really good. I had two or three (laugh that I don't remember). I tried a bartender original - a blackberry whisky smash (not sweet, and lovely), and a mojito. And maybe another beverage (geez). We also ordered pizzas. Okay, think New Haven pizza. Totally not like pizza elsewhere. The small was at least the size of half my torso. I swear! There are no pre fab pizzas to choose from. It is all build your own. You start with one of four options (white, white with mozzarella, red, red with mozzarella, I believe), and add toppings. I mean, good toppings. We also made one half a pizza a sausage and the other half and the other pizza vegetarian (spinach, peppers, artichoke hearts, fresh tomatoes, etc.). So tasty.
