My friend and I came here for dinner couple months ago. The place is a very laid back bistro reminiscent of a bistro you would find in Paris. It's a kinda place where you can dine alone as well. I actually saw couple patrons who looked to be regulars dining alone. I loved the service here. Our server was very attentive to our needs and not overly intrusive (I hate being interrupted mid-conversations to be asked how things are). and the food was pretty good. I had the mussels for app (they were divine) and the skate. I was a bit disappointed with the presentation of the skate dish. It looked nothing like the picture uploaded by another reviewer. And the skate was over-salted. My friend had the zucchini chips for app and the chicken tagine for main. She really liked the tagine. I would definitely come back here for another meal. I stopped into Bar Six just to grab a drink one evening. The bar area was completely packed, but we were able to secure one of the high-top tables. The drink menu offered a variety of beers, wines, and cocktails. Other than that, I have little to report. Bar Six offered a relaxed and comfortable experience, but it was nothing overly memorable. I stopped in for a post-movie drink on a sleepy Sunday night in February. The quaint little French restaurant looked so inviting and charming, and somehow familiar. Even though my friend and I only stayed for one drink at a little table near the bar, we had a great time. Cute bartender, friendly though not A+ staff, and a decent drink and food menu. On the way out, I realized why this place seems so familiar...a scene from Julie and Julia was filmed in the back booth area...I already wanted to go back for a meal, but now I NEED to sit in the same booth that Stanley Tucci and Meryl Streep used for the movie! read more

Ponty Bistro was a last minute choice for early dinner reservations on New Years Eve for my lady and I. We had the special prix fixe meal which consisted of a uniquely sweet foie gras, osso bucco, and creme brulee along with a glass of champagne. The foie gras was extremely interesting with an aftertaste that resembled strawberry cream cheese. It was served with two different sweet jams and caramelized onions that made for a really sweet but enjoyable starter. I've never had it served in this way but it was a really refreshing twist on an otherwise standard flavor profile. The osso bucco was amazingly tender and the bone marrow on the side was a huge serving. The meat fell apart as we cut into it and while nothing as peculiar as the appetizer, was a very well executed dish and a flavorful, fatty cut of meat that was tasty. The creme brulee also was fairly standard, but that's not a bad thing. While the atmosphere left a bit to be desired when it came to the decor, the service was nice and extremely attentive. At one point when we had a mis-communication with a waiter and were getting visibly frustrated one of the owners came over and smoothed things over immediately after - a gesture which was very nice and helped to reset the dining experience before it got sour. I plan to go back again and experiment with more of the menu! Unfortunately the 2 for 1 martini special didn't apply during NYE, but I had the french martini and my girlfriend had the house martini and both were delicious. I love the ambiance here. Very french ( or as french as I would like to believe!): laid back but somehow very posh, quiet without being overwhelmingly scary quiet. I loved it here! They have a great selection of cocktails - I doubt you can go wrong with any one of them. If I see risotto on a menu, I must have it. I know risotto is notoriously simple yet difficult to make, so I believe it is a pretty good judge on the quality of the cooking in general. The risotto was DEFINITELY on point - LOVED it. My friend who came ordered the chicken and they certainly loved it as well. I would be happy to come back here to try some more of their entrees. I'd give this bar something like 3.5 stars, depending on what you're looking for. My friend and I ended up here after my grueling trip in, wherein I arrived to NWK at 10pm after waiting at O'Hare for 9 hours! But I digress. We arrived at about 11:30 or so on a Weds. They seemed to be closing up shop by 1:00, so this definitely isn't a late-night spot (not on weeknights, anyway). Pros: Strong, well-made cocktails (gin and tonic, at least), French cafe-styling with little round tables, candlelit (which every eating/drinking establishment in NY tends to be), lovely al dente sun-dried tomato penne Cons: Slightly pricey for what you get--I think the pasta was $16, which isn't awful, but to which I say, "meh" Not sure I'd make this place a destination, but if you're in the neighborhood, I'd definitely give it a try. read more

"Egg benedict, egg benedict, egg benedict" that's what my voice in my head tells me on a weekend when I am in the mood for brunch. The egg benedict here are so good I wish I could be an egg benedict here: it is perfection and I love perfection. I had them already several times and I was never disappointed. If you think eggs are shy and think they need tons of hollandaise sauce to hide underneath it - nope, walk on. I like it that the sauce is super tasty + fresh and it doesn't cover your whole plate and won't make you try to remember what kind of soup you had ordered.. The hollandaise would serve me fine in a little box in my handbag and I would use it as chap stick every now and then just to have that flavour on my lips. You can get coffee, cappuccino, cocktail and much more here and, yes: even outside seating. Nice, right? read more

Okay I loved this place, and I might be a bit biased because I was soooooo HUNGRY when we came here I could have eaten anything but really it was great. We had a duck confit w/ kale and goat cheese salad for an appetizer and two amazing chicken entrees. Every single bite was so tasty I was in HEAVEN. No complaints about the food really you'll be so pleased. Also, really like having the choice of picking either French and Moroccan food. The ambiance is great. Cozy, dimly lit, and really intimate. It can get a bit loud bc it's always PACKED but that's fine. You know a place is great if it's usually busy :). Overall, great experience and I totally recommend it! I would give the full 5 stars if the waiters were just a tad bit friendlier! Service is everything to me and definitely part of the experience. If I only see my waiter twice for 2 seconds each time and don't even get a smile it takes away from having a complete positive experience. But that's just me being super picky! read more

Only problem is some servers look like they don't know what they doing or just don't care about the their tables that's why I sit at the bar now hopefully they hire better servers other than that the place is good to go and recommend it ! read more

ok, I'm a fan. Let me put it this way, anywhere in NYC, I can get out with three courses (dessert was shared) and bottle of wine at this caliber at $60 a head, I'm going to be a fan. But it isn't just the price that drives this review, the food was worthy of it all on its own. I kept it traditional, oysters, steak, but some of the north African dishes are just as good. This has been one of my neighborhood go-to's for many years. Its sort of a family neighborhood dinner spot in the early evening, they have a great early prix fixe. I will never forget being pretty new to NYC and overhearing a small little boy ordering lamb tagine when I didnt even know what it was! I understood then that little boys who grow up in New York are much much different than little girls who grow up in Kansas! You would not really go out of your way to eat here, although the southern french cuisine is very good, but its a cute place. Try to land the really awesome semi-circle booths in the back. Great for a romantic dinner or people watching. Bar is a fun scene also~the bartenders are all waiting for their big break, you know the type, but they are nice and fun for the most part. read more

I live a block away and we came here on a whim. I was charmed by the casual Parisian bistro atmosphere of the place, which included mismatched chairs, mirror walls with menu items written on them, tea candles, and other rustic touches. Very unassuming and comfortable. I went crazy over the music selection of primarily upbeat indie tunes. With every song change, I gushed over how I loved this song and how I was just listening to it earlier. I had a glass of Malbec, which was divine. As someone who normally uses Trader Joe's $3 Chuck for my wine fix, I had to sip this stuff slowly to savor the complexity of the wine. It was served at the perfect temperature and I could still taste the robust and fruity flavor of the wine as it traveled down to my tummy. We decided to try the Moroccan-inspired entrees because they stood out on the menu. I got the Moroccan Chicken Pie which was so delicious, I continued to eat long after I was full to the point of bursting. It was presented on a bed of Ratatouille. The pie was actually a spherical puff pastry full of juicy shredded chicken - they don't skimp on the meat in this dish. It was also dotted with some raisins, which offered a nice, tart complement to all the white meat. Extremely filling and one of the heartiest meals I've had. I will absolutely be back very soon for more yummy drinks and hearty French/Moroccan delights! read more

I'm still a fan, a year and a half later! But it's hard to believe that much time has passed since my "aperitivo..." Last night after work I met a friend here for a couple of drinks and a bite to eat, and everything was delicious! I began with the French 75 which was mixed with gin, fresh lime juice, and prosecco, and proved to be a refreshing start. We then ordered shares of the arugula salad, fried calamari, and french fries, all of which I paired with a glass of the Malbec. The arugula was fresh, the calamari was perfectly battered and fried and accompanied by a tasty harissa dipping sauce, and the french fries were just how I like them- thin, hot, and crispy! Furthermore, the ambiance was enjoyable. Not too bright yet not too dark- or loud- Bar Six makes for a great spot for a laid back rendezvous. P.S. I inadvertently left my jacket on the back of my chair and left being that the weather is still so warm, and jackets are only needed in overly air-conditioned places, and only remembered that I had left it there after I was waiting for the subway. And when I went back to retrieve it, the server had kindly placed it to the side of the register! read more

We took two of our friends who are trained French Chefs and they were very happy with this place as well. There is a reason why Bar Six has been a mainstay at 6th Ave. and 13th St. while the corner spot has changed three times in the last year alone. Quality. The boite is cozy with a small, but lovely bar area, a few outdoor tables for prime people watching and a moody dining room feted in mirrors and typical Parisian style. It's a great place for vegetarians and non-vegetarians to dine together. The steamed artichoke appetizer is delicious as is the eggplant, hummus and white bean appetizer. Highly recommend both. I swear by the vegetable cous cous -- a perfect mix of veggies, cous cous and harissa. It's ultra filling, and so tasty. My friends always rave about the mussels. The wine selection is decent (the rose was very refreshing on this spring evening). I've had the Chili Basil Margarita, which was good, but not mind-blowing. But, French bistros aren't expected to rock the Tequila drinks anyway. Bar Six is perfect for late night drinks and food, dinners with friends and a casual, post-work drink. This is a fun bar on the corner of E 13 and Avenue of the America's. The perfect spot to have a cocktail while you wait for your movie at The Quad! Quad Cinema is right around the corner, and while we waited to see 'Drawing with Chalk' the other night, we had a few margaritas at Bar Six. It's tough to get a seat at the bar, but the bartender was friendly, the drinks were perfect, and the atmosphere was lively. Fun times! read more

We only had drinks, and I must say, the Bar 6 Lemonade is the BEST lemonade cocktail I've had- not too sweet, nice kick to it, very refreshing! We didn't order any food, although I am interested in checking out their french fries & french onion soup (my fav) sometime in the near future. I had an impromptu brunch here a few weeks ago on a particularly wet and dreary Sunday. I arrived 1/2 hour ahead of my friend, and although the place was pretty full, they seated me at a table with no ado. (That almost never happens anymore!). While waiting, ordered a glass of wine, and learned a lot about French wine from my very knowledgeable waiter. Now on to the food: their crab cakes are to die for! I have so often been disappointed when I order this dish, but not here. Bar Six May serve the best crab cakes anywhere in Manhattan. Attentive but not cloying service, delicious food (brunch menu more inspired than most), and prices not outrageous. I look forward to trying their dinner menu some evening soon. read more

In NY and wanting bistro food we were disappointed to learn that Les Halles had given up the ghost. Research led us to Bar 6. Food wise it didn't disappoint. Service was, in a word, strange. We walked in and the restaurant was virtually empty. No one seated in the dining room but the handful of outdoor tables were full. We waited, and waited. Finally, a guy in a plaid shirt who had been leaning against the bar staring at us said, "Oh, did you want a table?". He seemed disappointed when we said yes. Clearly we had interrupted his reverie. Then, in this empty restaurant, he led us to a table in the very back. Just for the record we were dressed nicely, freshly bathed and groomed. We asked if one of the tables next to the open front windows were available and he said, "sure" and we were finally seated. Then the waiting began again. Must have been 6 or 7 minutes before our drink order was taken by a decidedly unfriendly server (more about her later). We shared the calamari with Moroccan herbs and harissa. The calamari was absolutely perfectly cooked. If it had been left in the fryer 2 seconds more it would have been tough, 2 seconds less it would have been undercooked and chewy. Once again, it was perfect. The spices were great as was the harissa. Having recently been in Morocco I can attest that the flavors were authentic. The hanger steak/frites that I had was also perfectly cooked as was my wife's skate. And the frites, among the best I've ever had. Now back to our server. I believe her name was Marcia. She got warmer and more attentive as the meal went on Having watched her run around the restaurant while we were there it was clear that almost all of the responsibility for the front of the restaurant was falling on her. The plaid shirt guy continued leaning on the bar, talking on the phone, and looking like he'd rather be anywhere else in the world. Never lifting a finger to help out the beleaguered Marcia. So, the food here was very, very good. The service, not so much. Hopefully, the plaid shirt guy will be replaced by someone whose job description includes something other than leaning on the bar. In any event, I'll be back, the food's that good. read more

There was a jazz guitarist playing during one of my visits - though no one seemed interested! Headed to this restaurant with two girl friends and was super happy to find this spot. It's a romantically lit with dark wood & candles - perfect for a date. The menu was French but also had Moroccan influence - we had the dips to share and I had the tagine. Was delicious - with cous cous. Great portion sizes so ended up taking some home too! This place is an absolute sham. Came here hungry for dinner and ordered the hanger steak. When it arrived, I pushed aside a mound of fries to discover half of a steak. When I inquired about the size, the steak was taken back to the kitchen. After waiting a while, I was told their portion used to be larger but has since changed, and that was the correct size. By this time, the other diners at my table were finishing up their meals. The manager asked if I would like to order something different. I asked what could be prepared quickly. The waiter suggested an appetizer. is this an effing joke? I ordered a steak. I did not order a salad for dinner so, no, I don't want an appetizer for dinner. 20 minutes later, I get my meal and my table is already done eating. To add insult to injury, the steak was left on the bill with the word 'PROMOTION' written in four different places on the bill as though the steak was complimentary. To be clear, nothing was complimentary and the service was atrocious, particularly on the part of the manager. When we paid our bill, the man dining at the next table received a hanger steak twice the size of the one served to me. Don't bother dining at this establishment. read more

This has been a regular place for me for 18 years. The atmosphere is everything you want in a neighborhood bistro, the staff are skilled and friendly, and the food has been both interesting and reliable. So it breaks my heart that the food has gone so downhill recently. The tagine is now unbalanced and watery, with practically no vegetables. My husband recently received a steak that was incredibly fatty and gristly, with starchy and undercooked french fries. And on two separate occasions, the kitchen sent out salads without dressing. Some dishes are still pretty good (the dips and merguez), but the overall experience is just not what it used to be. I'm not sure what has prompted the recent changes, but my neighbors and I are very much hoping for a return to tastier days at Bar Six. In the meantime, I'm on the hunt for a new go-to place. read more
