So, several years ago I began noticing that my age was creeping up on me and although I know that I did not feel as old as my chronological age, my hairline said otherwise. I began researching the many hair restoration and transplant physicians in the greater Los Angeles area and decided to go with Dr. Rome at Barber Surgeons Guild. I had the procedure more than a year ago, so this review is not being written out of relief for the work being over, but out of gratitude for the result! It takes about a full year for the entire result to be fully presented and honestly, I could not believe the before and after pics! I think I've regained 20 years of lost hairline! I made the initial appointment and went in with hesitation but ultimately chose Dr. Rome over others because of his demeanor and how easy it was to be around him. He is a very professional, no nonsense kind of doctor but is so personable and easy to talk to. He answered every question I had and you know, his prices were reasonable. For the work that I had done, his prices were not over the top. Also, he did not try to sell me on any procedures that I did not need. He pointed out how he could help and pointed out how there were areas where a transplant would not be feasible. I will say, though, that for anyone considering hair restoration work, you cannot get caught up by the cost of the procedure. This is an investment in yourself and your physical, and psychological, well-being. There are people who just do not possess the ability to appreciate this concept but I gather that if you are reading into this review, you are probably concluding that you have more to gain in restored esteem and vigor than you have to lose in monetary investment. The day of the procedure, everything went fine. There were no obstacles, no unexpected events, and you know, there was no discomfort. I found his staff to be very caring and supportive and they monitored me constantly for any sign or pinch of pain. I felt nothing but care, compassion and comfort. I was there in the morning and back at home by 3:00. After my initial follow-up, we discussed doing scalp camouflage treatment for an area of my scalp where a transplant would not work. To me, it irked me that I had a spot on the top of my head that just wouldn't qualify for transplantation. He opened the door for me to consider a scalp camouflage treatment as an option. I had never heard of this before. So, off I went home to research this. I learned that there are many people out there who do cam treatments, some people call it micro-dotting because that is what it is. Essentially, they will tattoo small little dots on your scalp to cover in the area where hair has recessed. The more I learned about it, the more I thought it was the right option for me. I thought that since he restored my hairline, it would be unwise to leave the rest without some kind of treatment. Then I began to perseverate. Who among all those trained in this fiekd would be the best to do this treatment? I looked up doctors, surgeons, technicians, nurses all over the LA basin woho offer this service. Then the thought came to me "What are you worried about? You get to work with Rodney". And then, an immediate calm came to my mind. Rodney is one of the members of Dr. Rome's surgical staff who also book appointments to do the scalp camouflage treatments. He is easily, without exaggeration, one of the most personable nurses/technicians I have ever met. He took amazing care of me on the day of my procedure and it just seems right to book with him at Dr. Rome's office to continue with the scalp camouflage. I immediately put my mind at rest and scheduled with Rodney. He has many years of experience in the hair restoration field and has worked at some of the more nationally-known facilities. He didn't just go to tattoo school. He's got skills and chose to come on baord with Dr. Rome's staff because of his work ethic and business acumen. I have never had anything like a tattoo before in my life. But, put your mind at ease, it isn't like you are getting an eagle tatted on your arm. The machine makes a gentle buzz-like sound and the feel of it is almost like when you tap your finger against an unraveled paperclip. It does not hurt at all! Rodney is masterful at camo placement and he works alongside Dr. Rome so tha the effect is natural and looks real. What is offered at BSG will include the doctor's supervision of the camo scalp treatment so that the end result is as natural-looking as possible. Rodney though is a real artist, a consummate professional and has the right degree of detail orientation in his approach to make your scalp look as normal and natural as possible! No regrets! After my first treatment, I could not count how many people complimented me! It gives me a salt-'n-pepper look to my hair which is the normal look for my age. Luckily, I live down the block from BSG and would constantly see people going in and out, giving me a first hand look at the quality of the cuts. I went in yesterday and was not disappointed! I was taken care of by Master Barber Brandon Barney and am very happy with his work. I was a bit nervous/excited during the cut as Brandon never moved the chair into a position where I could see what he was doing, but the reveal at the end made it all worth while. I was always so intimidated by the idea of going through with the procedure, and they eliminated any mysticism or uncertainty. I'm not sure when I'll be back again because I trust my hair to one very specific barber who lives far away, but will be back if I need a convenient beard shave pronto. Two things you probably don't know about Doctor Monkeypants: 1) He's losing his hair. 2) He's a vain Angeleno. Put those together and that only means one thing: Hair transplants. After a good bit of research and interviewing several doctors, he ended up at RHI talking to Dr. Rome. And he's happy he did. Aside from the uniquely non-slimy vibe he gives off compared to the others, one thing really stood out: None of the other doctors would quote prices up front. That's weird, right? You don't need to know what car I drive or where I vacation to determine what I'm going to pay. So shady. But not Dr. Rome. He has his prices plainly set with no gotchas. As far as the procedure goes, I'd love to say that it was simple and painless, but I can't. It's not a really fun process. The Artas system makes it about as efficient as possible, but regardless of that it's still a giant robot drilling literally a couple thousand holes in your head. Anesthetic is a wonderful thing though. It took it from what I'm assuming would have been outright painful to just moderately annoying and very time consuming. Edit: So it's been a year since my procedure and I'm super happy with the results. Can't recommend Dr. Rome highly enough. read more

Part 1 of 3 The purpose of my review is to share my experience with Dr. Rome, his staff and in greater specificity - my hair restoration experience. I will write this review in 3 parts. This is part one which is focused on pre-op and 1 month post op. Dr. Rome and his staff were professional from the beginning. He takes great care in sharing what he feels he can accomplish and what he felt was best for me. Never once was there any level of pushiness. He is very skilled, caring and wants the best for his patients. That is evident from the moment you meet him. Absolutely zero ego. Greg, who works with Dr. Rome, was equally attentive and worked closely with me on the financial piece. Dr. Rome has assembled a strong team. Greg will also be an important part of your experience as you decide on exactly what you are looking for and the cost associated. The day of the procedure, the majority of the heavy lifting was done by his team. Dr. Rome focuses on creating the precise incision(s) for where each hair follicle is to be placed while his team actually does the placement. This is very tedious (what Dr. Rome does) and requires great skill as well as an artistic eye. If done improperly - you could have hairs growing in the wrong direction (meaning differently than how your hair grows today). This next piece is so important - Dr. Rome has a team member, Rodney, who is exceptional at what he does. Once Dr. Rome finishes with creating the incisions for the grafts, Rodney takes over and orchestrates the tedious placement of each graft. Rodney was honest, kind and very good at what he does. Why is this important? At first it can be a little unsettling to see your MD leave the room when the actual hair placement takes place. In walks Rodney and you immediately know you are in good hands as he has been doing this for more than 15 years. He is sort of team captain as he works with the rest of the team in the room (who are all kind, considerate and talented). He is simply very good. Dr. Rome will check in and make sure everything is going to plan and then once again spends some time at the very end of the procedure ensuring that things were done to his liking. Once the procedure is done, Dr. Rome will sit down with you and walk you through expectations moving forward. My experience, thus far, has been very positive. As a sidenote, you will work with Bonny in the beginning (who is equally kind and attentive). So where am I a few weeks post op? Everything healed exceptionally well. Follow Dr. Rome's orders to the letter and you will have the same experience. Minimal swelling. For anyone that is reading this - I am sure that the actual 6 and 12 month outcome will matter just as much (probably more). I will follow this up with a lengthy review of where I am 6 and 12 months in. I happen to know a few of the physicians who perform this procedure and I can say with conviction - spend time with Dr. Rome and ask his opinion - you won't be sorry. I can say that I am rooting for Dr. Rome's practice to flourish. read more
