Server brought all sorts of menus. Bartender Andrew didn't even let me finish me saying what I wanted in a wine, he shoved some junk wine sample at me. He brought some other tasteless wine samples for my wife to try. Subpar. Andrew's attitude made us leave the place. Great atmosphere and great service - but portion size can be a tad larger. Coming to visit Minneapolis has its pros and cons. There are restaurants that give you American gigantic portion sizes, and then there are ones that starve you for the same price. Barbette is a bit on the latter end, even though it was probably better for my health. For Sunday brunch, my friends who live locally recommended Barbette and immediately we all spoke about the great open atmosphere. While the waiters/waitresses were busy, they still tend to every request and questions throwing their way. I specifically ordered the seasonal hash with roasted chicken, while my partner in crime ordered an omelet. The seasonal hash looks big, but there's a good amount of 'juice' that's on the bottom (don't ask me why there's juice in a hash). They tasted okay but we ended up chomping on chips by the time we got back to our car. Don't worry, our BMI isn't through the roof, it's just the portion size could be 30% larger for the price. Hopefully my local friends will try Barbette a few more times and find out its sweet spots - we just happen to be hungry after spending $28 (for the two of us), and there's no excuse for that. read more

Best meal and service I have had while sitting at a bar. It's been a while since I have been here but my wife and I went on a night with little advanced planning. There was a wait for a table but there was an open spot at the bar. I am always fine sitting at a bar but that doesn't mean I get to do it very often, this night the thought of the wait was enough to justify the bar service. This was the best idea. The bartender was a better waiter than most I have had. Drinks were always full, good wine knowledge, full water, plates brought out and he didn't hover. The food was fantastic. I had a very nice steak and my wife had a the same,done different both both came out together and were done perfect. Loved the Pom Frits. Went to Barbette for Restaurant Week. It's a nice quiet place with quite a bit of charm. Everyone at our table decided to order multiple appetizers instead of a meal because the apps all looked so good. We had the fries, the cheese plate, the gnocchi, olives, fondue au fromage, and mussels. All were very good, especially when paired with the ice wine. read more

My dinner at Barbette was simply delightful. The beet salad was a feast for the eyes --arugula covering magenta and bright yellow beets, garnished with flash-fried red carrots and other goodies. It was splashed with colorful dots of flavor like a cheese dressing, and a deep magenta sauce that might have been made with red cabbage. It's pretty rare when I have this much fun with a salad. The English pea risotto was also a happy surprise. The rice was richly and carefully seasoned, and the peas were cooked crisp-tender. It was garnished with "micro greens" and garlic and onion crisps. Somehow it wasn't too heavy, even with the cheese. I also tried the pork loin, which had a slightly sweet pulled pork component and a pork steak. I liked the pulled pork better as the pork steak was a little dry, but that was also on the whole a nice dish, paired with cooked apple and turnips. The two slight disappointments were a slightly watery champagne cocktail and a somewhat dry molten chocolate cake with ice cream. They were tasty and certainly a grade better than those you can get at a number of other places, however. This was a nice place to eat alfresco. The service was quite good, and there is actually a parking lot behind the restaurant as well. I look forward to my next visit where I can try some more dishes. read more

Got their shrimp noodle salad (served cold), and it was flavorful but I probably wouldn't get it again as there are so many places with better and cheaper vermicelli's. Made my trip to Minneapolis all worth while. :) We ordered the angel hair pasta with basil pesto and grape tomatoes, broccolini, New York strip steak frites, and for dessert: chocolate molten lava cake with vanilla ice cream and carrot cake. Cutest French café. J'ai de la chance - it was the most glorious day in Minneapolis, and I joined a friend for a cocktail and bite to eat on the sidewalk. Such a sweet place to enjoy the life of Uptown in the early evening. And if the place is packed - which I gather is rather often - you can have a glass of wine brought to you whilst you sit on the park benches outside. Truly - what else are you looking for? A few very good dishes and an enjoyable wine list at enjoyable prices. Sounds so cliché, but it really does give you a small taste - un goute - of France. And when you're through, you can meander on over to the closest lake for some extra beautiful scenery. You won't be disappointed if you make Barbette part of your Minneapolis day. read more

I've recently moved down the street from Barbette and it's proven very dangerous to live so close. The favorite thing on their menu is the meat plate. It's a verrrry substantial amount of food and I really appreciate the lack of skimping. The cheese plate is just as beautiful and certainly as tasty. The burger is also great, as well as the pea risotto. I love their sidewalk seating, but as fall is approaching, the inside atmosphere is just as nice. read more

Now, this may have just been a bad day for me and for them. I arrived for lunch with N and K. The menu was small. I already ate eggs for breakfast, didn't want more, so this eliminated over 1/2 the options. I also wasn't in the mood for meat. Eliminated almost all other options. I ordered a side of hash browns at the suggestion of a fellow foodie (not present with us) who raved about them. Well, they were ok but not great. They were warm, but not anywhere near hot. They were oily. The inside was soft (and lukewarm) and the outside was crisp. I decided to just go for the Organic Greens because I didn't want anything else that was heavy. The salad was actually pretty good, albeit simple and a little bit pricey for a side salad that is essentially just greens. I would like to go back and give it another try, but only because I feel bad about giving it 3 stars. Not because the food draws me back at all. However, I think it's likely that I may not appreciate French food! It tends to seem bland and overly reliant on fats for flavor. I also don't feel that great after eating it. Best breakfast Conference Room table I could conceive (I have a fixation with the design of Everyday Things). Second, Barbette gets culture. The environment is open, inviting, and exudes respect - atypically French but the best attribute of Uptown. The patio on the quiet side Irving Ave feels more Europe than U.S, without ever clearing customs. Butt the nude French Impressionist oil painting on the wall? Magnifique. Personally, I couldn't think of a better way to enjoy my eggs than with a side of buns. 5-stars all day long. Now, the food. Always pleases. But it may not be avante garde, or neuvo to satisfy critics on Yelp. Uptown tends to "turn" restaurants over quickly. It's really tough for restauranteurs to keep up with the consumers appetite for change. Attitude, interests, and opinions move quick here. My 2 bits: Love this place. I am overwhelmed with the kind service I am currently getting. Being in town to visit a family member, I forgot where to go for a quick bite. Maureen is in the front and manning the desk and got me a seat even though I did not have a reservation. She also has been very attentive to all of my needs. I am truly grateful. Now as for the bartender. he just made my day with the sweet voice of a karaoke king. You can really tell how amazing the owners must be by the behavior of the staff. Went here for national fry day (cause fries are my favorite food ever). Also had a margarita because well why not? Margarita was good, nothing spectacular. The fries (frites) were AWESOME. The woman at the host stand was unwelcoming and unfriendly. We had to order food/drinks at the host stand, and things were delivered to our table by several different servers, including the hostess. She delivered our cheese tray to our table without telling us which cheese was which. We've been coming to Barbette for years, and this evening was a true disappointment. I love me a french bistro, and nearly damn every weekend I miss the patio at Bar Tabac (Brooklyn). One fine Saturday found me in Uptown for a hair appt, so I came by Barbette for vino y omelettes. Nom! 4 stars b/c the service was kinda meh. I walked in, saw the sign "Wait here for bar and table service"...so I waited and was huffily told "Bar service is first-come, first-sever". It might be a good restaurant. My review is bad because of my experience there. My friends and I were seated outside in the patio and forgotten for a whole 15-20 minutes (definitely not exaggerating). They did give us water and left us alone with the menu for that long. When one of my friend said these exact words "Excuse me, hi. We are ready with our order" the waitress said "oh let me send someone to take it down for you" She then turned around and rolled her eyes. Not only that, she proceeded inside (where she thought I wasn't looking) and made a disgusting face while talking to another waitress and the other waitress looked at our table scornfully. I would look at someone that way if they are drunk and puked at the bar but order another drink later. After that statement there was a guy who came and took our order in roughly 5 minutes. All this waitress drama annoyed me but since it was a group hangout, I didn't get up and leave. Rude waitresses. That's all. I can't tolerate this attitude where the waitresses feel offended for no reason. We were not being difficult to begin with. We had the beet salad, garlic brocollini, fried chicken, pea risotto, fries with saffron aioli, vanilla bean cheesecake, and flourless chocolate cake. No apologies and just expected us to take it. Still charged our us as well. The food is extremely bland and overpriced. Do not waste your time or money by going to this restaurant. Barbette is the best place for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or drinks in uptown. The staff are always lovely, the atmosphere is low-light, playful, and flirty. The FOOD is to die for. One of the more authentic French restaurants I've been to in the twin cities. The garlic aioli and frites with their tall pour of wine is the best way to spend an evening- special occasion or not. I can't believe it's taken me so long to dine at Barbette, especially considering I live so close! We sat on the patio that's perched against a vine-lined wall and lots strung from tree to tree - making it feel like you're sitting in a French alleyway. Our server had a great attitude and was so friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable of the menu, providing several great tips. Dogs are welcome, and our server offered ours water and a free plate of chicken liver pâté. We started with the charcuterie plate and the half pound of mussels. The charcuterie was a bit oddly paired, with only 2 small cuts of cheese and simple salami and bologna paired with pickled carrots, beets, and actual pickles. The balsamic/honey soaked grapes were an excellent addition, though. The mussels were perfectly cooked and the white wine sauce divine - we soaked through all the bread we were given and even drinking some of the leftover sauce. We ordered the burger and steak for dinner - both of which were delectable.
