Came here for a good time after dinner to play some games with some friends. The drinks are pretty standard, but here's what games to play with a group: There are a few coin token machines that take cash and convert it to coins. I think for a little over an hour of playing which should be enough you can put in 10 dollars for a group of 3-4 and refill as needed. 4 PLAYER PACMAN play as diff colored pacmen and try to eat each other while avoiding the ghosts! See how many times you can eat other people to win the crown! The map gets bigger each time.' JAPANESE GAME - idk the name of this game but it's right in the center of the bar and is 3 player and you essentially do different minigames working as a team trying to get to the top it's hilarious, extra and so fun. Really had a blast. They have classics like tetris, galaga, qbert, pinball machines and some others you may not have heard of. Great mix of different games and I've gone twice now, can see myself coming back to this place. TIP: You can barhop after and go to a speakeasy (Patent Pending perhaps?) and you're near ktown so you can have korean bbq before or after as well. read more

I recently visited Barcade (Chelsea) for the first time for a private event. I can't even begin to tell you how much fun I had! I'm going to start with the bartenders and the drinks. The bartenders were amazing! Brian was the one that was generally down at our end of the bar, and he was the absolute epitome of what a great bartender should be-attentive, friendly, happy to answer questions and quick to serve the drinks. He really did a great job. I was sad that there apparently was a shift change while I was off playing games and I didn't get to leave him a tip...he deserved it! Speaking of drinks, I had so much fun exploring the extensive craft beer menu-tried a few I didn't like (Thanks, Brian for bringing me samples to try!) and found more than a few that I absolutely loved. I also tried the Viking Blood bourbon/mead drink and totally fell in love with it. Can you say YUMMY?! The food was also delicious. The burger sliders were AMAZING. The Tater Tots were great. The fried pickles were awesome. I feel like there was something else I really liked, but I can't remember for sure....umm....please forgive my lapse in memory, but...did you see all the good stuff I drank? The games? Talk about a throwback to my younger days! I had so much fun playing and just watching other people play and have a good time. Galaga, Asteroids, Pacman, Centipede....all the classics and then some! The only improvement I'd like to see is that I wish there were hand sanitizers hanging around throughout the joint. After touching all those sometimes-sweaty joysticks I would've appreciated a dousing of germ killer! It's a fun place for a date, which was what I came here for. We got the burger and wings to share, and they have a decent number of beers on tap. But we're here for the games, and that's what I'll talk about now. They were great! They had a bunch of the classics, including Pac man, both the Simpsons Game and the X-Men Game counterpart (I forget the name), and a lot of other games I recognized the style, but not the names of. They also had the typical racecar game, an Atari-looking one with the aliens (again, I've seen it a million times but IDK the name), a few of the 'bash-it-as-fast-as-you-can' games with the silly character faces and names, and more. There was one I'd never seen before that I found interesting--it was towards the center of the room, was big and white, and had a tiny 3D thing. The premise was that you were traveling through time for a quick-draw setting, where you had to kill the person before they shot/stabbed/hacked you to death first. It seemed like it should be fun, though it was a bit laggy--so it was more of prediction-playing than reaction. That's fine too, but it felt more like a side effect of the machine's age, than game design itself. Also, the game 'console' machine was GIANT for such a small interface and simple design. That's not Barcade's fault though. The one game I didn't see but with they had was Burger Time. I was introduced to it a few years ago in an Upstate NY comic store, but that venue has since closed its arcade section, so I've been hoping to see it again! There are games for everyone, from PacMan (Battle Royale 4 player as well as normal Pac-Man) to Trivial Pursuit. $20 is more than enough for a few people to play all they want- most games only cost one token ($0.25). Call me a boomer but I spent $2 playing Trivial Pursuit, got my name on the leaderboard, and felt the most accomplished I've felt all month lol. Attempted to order drinks. When the bartender came to me, I pointed to the person who was there before me. They were served. My turn was up! Bartender takes two separate orders that came after me. By the third, I flagged and explained that I was there before the person he was about to serve. Group's evening darkened by a female server with fucsia hair (henceforth: Fucsia Server), jean shorts, black leather belt w/ studs who was repeatedly a real downer. This is described in chronological order, but if TL:DR, skip ahead to item #3. A couple of weeks ago I was with a party of 16 at Barcade in Chelsea, one of which was celebrating a birthday. I brought mini-cupcakes. Noticing they had a desert (brownies) on the menu I thought it would be the right thing to request permission to share our outside "food" on the premises. Fucsia Server said no & tried to convince me to buy a few $9 brownies instead. 1) Not allowing outside food as policy is fine, & although disappointed, I was OK with it & informed the group. If I was managing the venue I would empower my employees to not enforce this rule at all times (i.e. on a slow Tuesday night) b/c in situations like this doing so might cause a large group to leave the venue rather than stay longer & spend more money. In this situation allowing 5 minutes of celebration including 2-bite cupcakes from outside would have been a sound business decision. The group decided that when celebration time came we'd move on to another bar for our post-gaming shots & beers & hang & to sing happy birthday & have mini cupcakes. Not a big deal. 2) One member of our party of 16 walked up to the bar & asked Fucsia Server for water. She looked him in the face & walked away. Another bartender brought him water. * 3) At one point 4 of us had just finished playing a game of Dialed In pinball. There was a credit remaining on the machine. Several of us were at a tall table within 3 feet of the game. Fucsia Server was bussing, carrying several pint glasses in one hand as she walked passed Dialed In. She stopped, with her free hand pressed the start button, then plunged ball one, poisoning the credit. The lost 75¢ is no big deal, the malice is. If her thinking was "the bar will make another 75¢ if I burn this credit that clearly belongs to this large group which has been pumping tokens into these machines for the past 3 hours," I'd say that 75¢ earned is outweighed by her totally unnecessary & very negative act. Definitely not a good business decision. * After that particular behavior one member of our party suggested we should just have the cupcakes inside the venue anyway as we'd hoped/planned. I didn't like the idea of asking mom after dad said no, but another member of the party asked a second member of the staff about having the cupcakes & the answer was an immediate, "yeah, go ahead," so we did. As we celebrated our friend's birthday Fucsia Server came over to give us a hard time about it. I mildly told her that one of her coworkers had said it was OK, she stormed off & we didn't see her again. We didn't stay much longer, instead almost the entire group went to a nearby bar for post-match shots & beers b/c Fucsia Server had made us feel so unwelcome all night. The rest of the group followed shortly thereafter. I haven't spent a ton of time at Barcade Chelsea but everyone else I've encountered who works there has been nice to very nice. My experience with the staff at Barcade Williamsburg, where I have spent more time, is that they are mostly very friendly & as attentive as they can be (although when that joint gets crowded it's hard to get served). Additional notes: besides paying for games for hours everyone in our party patronized the bar: most had multiple beers, plus a few full meals & appetizers. The food was fine. The service (w/ one notable exception) was good. The games played well. The space was comfortable, not as crowded & loud as other times I'd been there. I've had more than one opportunity to return to Barcade Chelsea since then & b/c of the experience described above opted to go elsewhere instead. I hope Fucsia Server is over whatever it was that made her behave that way that night. read more

I have also been to the Barcade in the East Village. This location is bigger and less crowded. On an early Sunday night, it was less than half full, which was great for us. The atmosphere is very laid back and has more of a dive bar feel to it. The customers when we were there appeared to be mainly in their 20s and 30s. This is a great place for a date or for groups. What makes this place amazing are the classic arcade machines. I would estimate that there were at least 50 machines. These included: Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Millipede, Fix It Felix, Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, Golden Axe, Pong, Tetris, Metal Slug, NBA Jam, Crazy Taxi, and many more. The booze was also good - there was a pretty extensive beer selection on tap. And the bar food was not bad either. We had a sampler platter, which had pulled pork sandwiches, tater tots, chicken wings, and mozzarella sticks. Everything tasted fresh and came quick. read more

This location of barcade was way too crowded and just terrible. Granted I went on a Saturday night and I knew the wait was going to be long to get drinks, but I just flat out did not enjoy this location as much as the Williamsburg location. The ambiance was terrible. Horrible, loud, headache inducing songs were played... and lets not even mention the drinks. I ordered 2 whisky sours and it was entirely corn syrup water mixed with a teeeeeny tiny bit of whisky. I couldn't drink it. That was $15 (per drink) down the drain. I wish I could've taken a picture of how you can see the syrup floating in the drink (I could not because it was too dark inside). The only thing that was okay was the tequila shots ... but then again... you can't mess up shots. It is literally straight from a bottle. I had 3 gin and tonics (which I had to ask them to mix with club soda instead of their liquid sugar tonic water), but even then I only had a SLIGHT buzz. The Williamsburg location is literally a better bang for your buck! So go there instead. read more

I love me a good barcade!! There were several machines dispersed along the walls throughout the rather spacious venue, most of them costing 25 cents or one token (some required 2), and a great selection indeed! I found myself playing Millipede and Ms Pacman the most. I set the high score in fact! I wonder if someone has beaten me by now? In between games, I did try a couple of drinks that were tasty, such as the Jungle Bird and Rutger Sour (cheers Dad!). I can't really speak on the food, but I was able to happily kill a couple of hours in this place. And, I was able to charge my phone on the power strips in between arcade machines! Now there are a couple games I do wish they had -- can't say I know the whole process that goes into which machines they use, but either way it was a great time. read more

Had an after work event here with some new co-workers in the neighborhood. It was a lot of fun. The video games were older than some of our newest members in the team. We ate typical bar grub, done as well as any other mid range pub. The tap list was pretty good tonight. And the vintage games.... that's why we are here. I spanked everyone at Mortal Combat 2, several flawless victories, can't believe all the special moves came back to me - call it muscle memory (yes, I know that makes me a loser). It was a tad warm inside, although it was a muggy one. And the logistics for a larger party just weren't up to snuff. Not enough bartenders to handle the regular happy hour crowd, let alone our late party of 10 which we confirmed on Monday (today is Wednesday). Napkins were also rarer than precious metals, which is unfortunate when eating finger foods after handling video games that are three or four decades old. We go from three stars to four stars just because I have no idea how they keep these arcade games in somewhat operational condition. The back-in-the-day arcade "technicians (the ones with the huge keychain and pockets full of tokens)" in the 80s didn't even keep their games as playable as Barcade. So this is my big f#*k you to Dave and Busters, and your card activated games, and stupid tickets for stupid prizes. read more

Avoid this place and read on if you want to hear about the first time I got kicked out of a bar... . Lame story ahead! We bought a lot of drinks and was ready to play games and I was trying to drink out of my hydroflask and this worker goes "what is that?" And I didn't get to tell him what it was (water if you were wondering LOL) and he goes "You have to get out now". And he kept forcing me out by standing really close to me to get me out the door, so it made my 4 friends chug their drinks and shots or leave them, so I don't have to wait outside alone! Avoid it this place even if it's the only bar that is available with no lines to get in and everywhere else is full! I can see why now...... If you're curious about what happened next, we had a blast somewhere else and the food/drinks was amazing too :). They didn't have lemonade but the bartender was nice enough to say she could create something close enough, and she did. There def could have been a bit more alcohol in it, especially for $14, but overall it was a good drink & we had several rounds. The games were cool and there were good options for everyone (Crazy Taxi, pinball, Mortal Kombat, Donkey Kong, etc) Overall, the vibe here is dope. My only complaint is the music. We spent about 3 hours here and there was never a change in genre. The entire time there was rock/grungy music blasting and it was hard to ignore. We love New York, we love Chelsea, we HATE BARCADE. Whoever worked security the night of 10/16 will be the demise of your business. My husband and I walked up to have a couple drinks and food. We were met by the most power hungry, outrageous security guard. He's what you think of when someone has no power in their regular life, but is given a position of power that means literally nothing. He made a decision that my husband who had done NOTHING to him wasn't allowed in because he "smelled like alcohol". We were going into a bar, he had TWO BEERS before we got to the bar. He proceeded to tell us, multiple times, he had "made his decision" and he "runs this place". We asked to speak to a manager. He refused time and time again, TAUNTING my husband getting in his face asking if he would "do something about it". My husband put his hands up saying "I'm not going in there, there just has to be someone else to talk to" and the security guard said "you gonna hit me?" At one point, he pushed my husband out into the sidewalk when all he did was look around the security guard into the restaurant and ask for help. Me, who hadn't been irrationally banned, asked to go in so I could speak to a manager without my husband. I was told I was also banned because I was with him. What an embarrassing experience for us, for no reason and more importantly, what a disgusting display of "power" by a man who has clearly nothing else going for him: Not only will we not go back, we immediately went to OTHER bars and restaurants where we were welcome; we spent our money and told this tale. read more

You can really get lost here for hours, so much nostalgic games, crafty beer menus and good bar food. If you looking for a type of crew here you won't find it - its a very unusual crowd. A lot of pregamers, Comic Con attendees, gamers, dates, people on bar tours, etc etc etc. Downfall is I went on a Friday evening around 9:30ish and it was packed. It was tough to move comfortably. The biggest concerns is you get the occasional monopolizer on a machine and I had a few machines eat up my coins and there isn't anyone readily available to help. read more

They have your typical types of games (with Crazy Taxi hidden all the way in the corner). The only thing noteworthy was this weird holographic game (which ate my quarter). I'm not partial to video games, though I've played my fair share of them. Arcade games are its own category of simple, low-rez, nostalgic inducing, widely appealing game. My favorite games are Mortal Kombat and Bust a Move. I come to Barcade and Two-Bit's from time to time mostly for the novelty of it and to pass the time in a way that's social and not mentally or physically taxing. I sound like a fun person, right? Though I'm not exactly the target demographic for this kind of thing, I have a lot of nice things to say about Barcade. They have a very wide craft beer selection, so IPA lovers and Pumpkin Ale lovers alike can find something to drink. For everyone else, there's wine, a full bar, and soda. They even have a whole food menu that includes things like eggplant banh mi, salad, wings, and tater tots. The buffalo cauliflower I had was incredibly underwhelming but that's okay. They take your order quickly and keep the space relatively clean. There's a wide range of ages in the crowd but it does seem younger, for the most part. The people I've observed and encountered in my many visits here have always been nice. Even the way men have struck up conversation with me and my girlfriends hasn't been the usual tactless, skeevy approach, but more awkward and feckless, which I don't mind as much. read more

I don't know how this review slipped through my little fingers because this is probably the one I have frequented the most over the years. (There are numerous barcades: Jersey City, St. Marks, WBurg) Looking for a bar that's not insanely expensive in Chelsea but will provide you with hours of entertainment if you have single dollah bills and/or quarters and provides good music? Then this is your gateway drug. Their beer menu never fails to disappoint me. I've always found something I've never heard of before in my life. This week there was a Flying Dog cask ipa ale infused with gin chips. Also splurged on trying their tots that are supposed to taste like a big mac with a friend. Thoughts - I like the cheese (it tastes real instead of processed or too powdery), the onions really taste like they came off a sandwich and have that nice roasted stewy taste to them, and the big mac sauce (which is probably literally ketchup, mayo, and dill or horseradish). All of it works so well. My only thoughts are take it up one more notch by either throwing on ground hamburger. . . . or if you're keeping it vegetarian friendly pickles. Or diced pickles. Hardcore. Anyway, they have a happy hour of a dollar off beers until what I want to say is 7pm. The game selection is usually solid and feel they rotate out machines every so often. Personal favorites if it makes an appearance here is The Simpsons. I have ashamedly almost beat the game like half a dozen times between childhood and adulthood and have never committed to following through with the whole shebang. One last word of advice, it gets insanely crowded in here. You will be lucky as hell to get a seat. If you get two, like we did, you're even luckier as hell. I love arcades. I love beer. I love arcades with beer. I love Barcade. Went in on a Saturday night and was happy to find a full but not overly packed bar. Most machines were in use but you could find open ones at any given time. Stuff like Q Bert was generally free all night and more popular machines would open up over time if you were patient. A couple machines did seize up a bit as the night progressed but the staff fixed the issues very quickly. The beer selection was terrific. They even had a cask beer available, which was very good. Visited the Detroit Barcade several times and enjoyed it. I just tried to go in and the guy checking ID's didn't want to let me in because my driver's license is expired. I'm 50 years old. A new ID would say the same. My ID is expired because i've been stationed overseas for the last 5 years. The ID checker threw an attitude when I asked him to get the manager. "Don't tell me what to do..." If this is an indicator of the level of service, it's best to stay away. read more
