I ordered a small tortilla soup and got a large and apparently paid for a large. It was the nastiest tortilla soup I've ever had. Well, they call it chicken soup but either way it was gross. I threw it away. I also ordered one enchilada. I think they used velveeta cheese on it because it was gross and gooey. Very disappointing. We've passed by this place every time we went off island and finally decided to try it. Why didn't we do it sooner?!! This is real Tex-Mex and the best we've found since moving here 4 years ago. I had Jeanie's dinner and loved all of it. Their salsa is smoky and flavorful as are all the sauces. Tamales were filled with flavor and not too much masa. Chips are meh came alive in that salsa! Excellent Mexican food and we WILL be back for future Tex-Mex fixes. Service was also very good and not too intrusive while making sure we had everything we needed. read more

I got the enchiladas and they were literally dripping wet it was more like soup. They said it would be 10 minutes so I drive down and they make me wait for 40 minutes then I get literally the worst food ever. Do not go to this place it's not good. read more

The food is phenomenal. I adore the Mel's Sauce. However, I am growing more and more upset with the false advertising. When my husband and I first started going there, the menu listed simply "Iced tea" as 1.99. But we were charged 2.25 for sweet tea. When we asked about it, they stated that sweet tea was more. Since it wasn't clearly labeled on the menu, we let it go. Then I noticed the menu changed and stated Tea (sweet and regular) 1.99. But we continued to be charged 2.25 for the sweet tea. Customers should be able to trust the menu prices. Several times, we had to have them change the charge. The final straw was today. Again we were charged 2.25 for sweet tea. When I mentioned it to the waiter, he went to the manager. When he came back he said "We changed the price and the menu is wrong, but we went ahead and adjusted the price for you this time." So, this is a LIE as the menu just changed not that long ago to include "sweet" in the tea price. Secondly, it is not the customer's fault the menu is WRONG. While it is only .26, the principle of the issue is that they are falsely advertising the price of their items. And the customer should be able to trust that their bill will reflect the menu prices. read more

My husband, sons and I ate here a few times when we first moved to Hitchcock 4 years ago and we're not impressed. We decided to try it again tonight and it was excellent! Prices are a little high, but it is worth the price! Beef fajitas were yummy (chicken were okay) and my husband had a shrimp salad that he and our son really enjoyed and there was more than enough shrimp for the two of them. The other Barcena's is great! This one not so much. We sat at the bar and were greeted by the manager who started making us margaritas. We were taken over by Fatima, who seemed to be more interested in other things. Why? The manager told her we wanted waters and we asked her for waters three more times. All 3 times she even repeated it back to us but our waters never came. At least Fatima brought us another margarita. Don't order the taco salad. It's a complete ripoff. It's only a shell, protein, lettuce, tomato and shredded cheese. They do serve a tiny side of Queso and a spoonful of beans on the plate to keep the shell from sliding. Fatima asked if I wanted lettuce, tomato & shredded cheese and I said yes. So if I didn't want any of that, would I have just gotten a shell and shrimp? Where's the beans, rice, sour cream, etc.? $15 for this dish is absolute price gouging. We were annoyed at this point and we asked for our check. We had a card for a discount but of course our server didn't apply it so we asked the manager to do it. Too bad our server didn't do her job even slightly well because we both have over 45yrs of service industry experience combined and have been leaving generous tips to people who take care of us, especially during this past year where restaurant workers have been struggling. It takes a lot for us to be annoyed because everyone has a bad day but it's like we were being completely disregarded for some reason. read more

It was getting a lil late and we just wanted a quick snack and a decent margarita since we wanted to watch empire first. It was my bday and we ordered the house margarita. It was so nasty we sent it back . Let's not forget the drunk annoying bartender who never shut up. Maybe that's why our drinks wasn't right because she was drunk.We asked for top shelf. Fish tacos were on the high end of average. Staff is friendly and attentive. A bit pricey for what you are getting. The fish tacos were made with grilled fish rather than fried which I prefer. The rice and charro beans were good and not overly salty like some places. Just an average place in my opinion, but the cost is a major bummer. read more
