We were in the mood for a different type of date night- and so we have Bar chef a try. The service is extraordinary with the staff clearly outlining the drink menus and taking the time to make suggestions when needed. We tried 2 of the modernist beverages and they were super tasty- my only complaint is because we also ordered quite a few shared plates the modernist beverages just took up a lot of space on the tiny table making dinning a little cluttered. We also tried 2 drinks off their bar menu which were just as tasty and not as large in presentation. Knowing what we do now- I would have started with the casual drinks from the bar while we ate, and then move onto the modernist beverages for dessert. This would have allowed us to have more table space for our food plates. Our modernist beverages also came with sorbet and pearls etc which would have been a great finish to dinner- as opposed to having sorbet along with shishito pepper and fries. Came here with a group of friends and I got the Strawberry and Basil Spritz ($39) which is part of their "Modernist" series. The drink comes with a side of yogurt-like dessert and a small ice cream sandwich. We also shared the Charcuterie board ($39). It's a pretty standard board but what was strange was that there was only maybe 3 small pieces of toast which was nowhere near enough for the amount of cheese/meats/jams. We ordered extra toast which cost $1 and that's fine (although the server never told us about the extra charge). Service was good as well, but definitely we were 'politely' being reminded many times that the table was needed for an upcoming reservation. So is this place worth it? Maybe. Long story short: An interesting, pricey, upscale bar experience with delicious, artful cocktails. Definitely worth at least one visit. Long story long: This is a drink *and* a show. You can't help but say "wow!" when your drink comes to you or "what's that?" when another table's order goes by. We had lovely neighbours and everyone was checking out each others' tables to see what masterpiece they got. The cocktails are definitely conversation starters and expensive, but when you know what you're getting into, it's certainly worth the experience. I ordered the sesame samurai from the overture series. Very fresh and delicious. It's something I would come back for if I wanted to still enjoy the fancier life within budget. My friend ordered the piña colada from the modernist series, which was considerably more expensive. It came with a drink on the side with a coconut/pineapple style cold dessert. She compared it to the "slushie" part of the piña colada. It was such an interesting experience and it looked and tasted great! For the table, we ended up nibbling on chicken croquettes and fries with truffle and parmesan. The chicken croquettes were probably my favourite thing! Nothing too special about the fries. My friend also had the Mexican Barbocoa, which she liked, but found the beef brisket a bit dry. The food is not really what I'd come for, it's all about the drinks. The staff were kind and attentive. They took the time to explain the cocktails and answered all of our questions. The atmosphere was very dark as soon as you walk in, with dim lighting for every table, like candlelight. My wife and I visited Bar Chef, driving down from Markham, and thoroughly enjoyed the drinks (I had the Essence of Fall and Toasted Old Fashion) and both were AMAZING (both in taste and experience. These were more expensive from 30-50 CAD but they basically came with a speech, a platter of tasting components and a lot of showmanship. We got the clarified piña colada and it was WORLD CLASS. Stopped in to BarChef on a Tuesday evening while in Toronto for work. Very solid selection of bourbon and whiskey/whisky. I didn't have any food, but the food that those around me ordered looked fabulous and smelled great. This was quite a unique experience. Cocktails, even mocktails, are crafted with the utmost precision at this upscale bar on Queen Street. On a Saturday night, we found ourselves on the waiting list at this coveted spot, perfect for date nights or small gatherings with friends. The first spot for two became available at the bar and so we ended up with a front row seat to all of the action. The bartenders add quite a bit of flare to the concoctions that are made at the generously stocked bar and the truly elaborate cocktails are made out of sight in the kitchen. The presentation quality of these drinks is impressive. We started with a couple of drinks from the bar, before venturing on to the modernist series of drinks. Our next moves were the daiquiri adaptation and the signature vanilla hickory smoked manhattan, their most expensive drink by far at $50 CAN. The daiquiri adaptation included a drink and a tasting component. The cocktail menu describes spiced rum, almond, toasted coconut, fresh lime, pineapple, carbonic lime and coconut, vanilla, orange, and maraschino, all of which came in a coconut shell. Served alongside of it, on actual sand, was lime and coconut snow, edible flowers, toasted coconut, and rum and almond jellies. This was clearly a very well-thought out drink that worked. Shortly after this arrived to us, a large, smoking drink sitting on hickory wood chips and covered by a shield was placed in front of us on the bar. The waitress returned a few minutes later to remove the top, after letting the smokiness settle a little. To go along with our drinks, we got a few snacks - the very tiny but flavorful beef sliders, a nice portion of Japanese fried chicken, and fries which came with a rosemary aioli. So, why just four stars? The front of house and manager offered terrible service and poorly managed the people waiting while a number of seats were open throughout the night. The reason the experience climbed back up to four stars was because the bartenders were excellent, as were the drinks and the food. read more

4.5 out of 5. This is one if THE places to take cocktail lovers if you are looking to impress. We had a near flawless visit with a couple of nitpicks. Came here with a reservation of 8 for 11pm. I definitely recommend booking in advance because it was busy even on a Monday evening. The menu is well crafted and there are cocktails to suit every preference. They do standard cocktails but The Modern section is what they are best known for with drinks that specialize in giving you a showy experience and they are also the most expensive. The cocktails are the star of this place and they are certainly masters of their craft. Servers are good at offering recommendations depending on your personal tastes. We all enjoyed our chosen cocktails. Our table was given an odd apparatus filled with water but no explanation for what it was for? It appeared you could twist the spouts like a faucet to dispense water but not all of them worked. The water glasses supplied were oddly wide rimmed and shallow. We all split water on ourselves too easily before any of us even began to drink. So our table and seats were just very wet for the whole night. I ordered the Spring Thaw which came with a whole floral arrangement and a fragrant pour of dry ice. The servers were great at explaining the drinks, how to experience it, and describing what they were doing but it was hard to hear over the music sometimes. The interactive element made for a great video but once the smoke was all gone, you're just left with a cocktail to slowly sip. I was keeping my glass inside the plant while chatting with friends since I didn't want to hold it in my hand and the server took it away before asking if I was finished. Always wanted to try this place as they had such beautiful drinks. They don't take reservations so you have to put yourself on a wait list the day of. PUT YOURSELF ON THE WAITLIST!! The individual on the phone informed that this was noted, perceiving me to believe it would be acknowledged in some way. Proceeding to ask if we could have some brought, the reply was "fine". We had reservations for 8:30pm on a Sunday (ran late and they were accommodating when we called to let them know). Our server was kind and explained the menu/different drink series to us and It's apparent they put a lot of thought into each one of their modernist series cocktails. How have I not written a review for this place? My friend and I stayed in Toronto back in 2019 and our Airbnb host let us know about BarChef. This is the one place I tell everyone about when they go to Toronto. On the last night of our awesome Toronto trip I made the executive decision to drag people out and enjoy the nightlife Tdot has to offer. It paid off in spades. Thru my yelp app (which has become increasingly more practical and functional) I was able to smoothly make reservations. Dark but inviting which really helped to showcase the awesome cocktails. Service was a tad slow to start but nothing terrible. I was honestly skeptical about the place and the quality of the relatively high priced cocktails. I was wondering if it was an emperors new clothes phenomenon by fellow yelpers but it turns out they were right and those cocktails were worth it. The experience we had here was well worth the slightly high price point. The CN tower on the other hand... Bar Chef is a versatile place for liquor connoisseurs as well as casual after dinner or partygoer types. In addition to high end cocktails there is an extensive whiskey and bourbon list which I took advantage of. Blantons was on the menu! The legendary whiskey with the horse rider on the bottle. It's so hard to find even at big liquor stores. I finally had a pour here and it was awesome. At $15 Cdn for a generous pour it ain't so bad. My local generic sports bar in the Tri-state area will charge more than that for something more run of the mill like Makers mark. From the modernist menu we had the apricot modern cocktail ($30) which arrived looking like a museum piece with little balls of apricot candy inside looking like Christmas tree ornaments. It tasted delicious as well. Smooth and slightly strong with a hint of flavor from the islay scotch pete. Not syrupy or too sweet. Was it worth $30? That's subjective. It was for me on this night of seeking adventure and something different off the beaten path, enjoying the Toronto nightlife before returning to New Jersey. Like many others recently, I found out about this place on the Netflix show Drink Masters. After visiting BarChef I can confidently say it lives up to the hype! I think this is a really interesting spot with really unique cocktails. The chef that created this place is featured on Netflix show, and it is not surprising because they experience it's truly one of a kind The cocktails are all extremely balanced and there are great amount of options. The only downside is that I think for the cocktail quality the price is quite high and it's a little bit on the pretentious side of an experience They are well known for $45-$55 cocktail that is an immersive experience. There is often an edible component such as sherbet made in house, pair with a cocktail. Even the glasses the cocktails are places in are carefully thought of. For example, you may be drinking out of a large sphere with a hole in it, with large sticks of cucumber and herbs in order to get an experience in your nose as you sip the drink. They are also well known for drinks that come in a glass container smoke that gives an interesting flavour profile. Been on my bucket list to come to BarChef, and finally came for my birthday with a friend. When first walking in the aesthetic and dimmed lights really set the tone. The menu has an extensive list of drinks, but all intricate and separated by type/category. We tried two drinks each, all from different categories. The staff really know there stuff and will help support you choosing a drink based on your preference. Our server Rachel was amazing, she was friendly and really knew the menu. The taste of all the items were so lovely and had so much depth with the multi-sensory approach (with items to eat and drink). We also received truffles and another treat for my birthday, thank you to Annabelle the manager, she was amazing too. Overall the experience was great, I'd say for the price, it is high, but if you think of all that goes into each item, it makes sense.
