This was honestly such a disappointing meal. Brought my friend from California here, and unfortunately everything we received was cold and oily. Our calamari was COLD, so it must have been sitting there. We sent it back and I put a paper in the tray to see if they'd bring back the same one and sure enough they did. They either heated it up again or just straight up laughed in our face. Our server took orders of people that arrived after us. Fish tacos lacked flavor and soggy.
If you're in the Boston area, definitely a must to try. The restaurant is by the water. The ambiance very nice, loud, music, such a vibe. The service was very friendly & attention to detail, because I had lots of questions on the menu. I ordered fried fish tacos, which was delicious, and some grilled little neck clams. Oh yeah can't forgot about the lobster roll. & a side of extra fries, that made everything better. I can't wait to visit again.
Came here to experience a lobster roll and this place looked fun. The lobster roll was tasty and fresh! Super solid. Also got their chicken sandwich and that thing was seasoned so well! Both were home runs. Service was fast and friendly. This is a fun place inside. You could find families in there, work colleagues, you name it and it's close to the water.
Walked in for a table of 2 on a Sunday night not expecting much of a crowd. We were sat right away, but more so just pointed to the table instead of guided to it. The wait staff were very attentive in an effort to turn tables over quickly. It was a busy, but not over crowded night and the vibes on the water were good. The food itself is very expensive and average, but it's worth the location.
I really enjoyed my time at Barking Crab. I had the snow crab (1.5 lbs!) and was sure to put my bib on! The crab tasted so fresh and the meat did NOT stick to the sides of the shell. Dipping butter was plentiful and delicious. We sat inside as it had a much shorter line, but they have an outdoor patio that looks awesome for a summer afternoon. We were seated by a window in the back with a gorgeous view of the water. The ambience was very lively, down-to-earth, rustic, and while it seemed older, it was clean. Service was sufficient - nothing bad and nothing over the top. There were a couple of faint smiles here and there, but they were hustling with so many customers! Definitely worth a visit, and I would love to return for more!
I read so many mixed reviews but their menu look like we'd have a lot of options as we only have one day in Boston and wanted to eat everything. Luckily, there were four of us so we did order a lot so we could taste a little bit of everything and we were not disappointed. Lobster roll , clam chowder , fish and chips , clam strips , crab cakes , oysters and more fried seafood . The only thing that was just OK with the crab cakes other than that everything was delicious. Service was very attentive and prompt. It's located in the Seaport area. A very casual atmosphere, love all the cool and funny signage.
I couldn't believe I've lived in MA my entire life and had never been here before. The ambiance is straight up Boston Summer vibe specifically if you like seafood - which was unreal by the way. I still daydream about it on the regular. The only reason this isn't giving 5 stars for me was the insane line and lack of speedy service. But the food thooooooo
It was very crowded. We had to wait in line for 15-20 min. It was our first time in Boston and we wanted to try local food. We ordered a dozen of oysters, crab dip, and clam chowder for appetizer. Crab dip was good, but I was disappointed at the chowder. I can only taste 1 clam and all the rest was potatoes. Oysters were fresh but very small. We also ordered seafood pasta, warm lobster roll and cold crab roll. Pasta was good with a white fish filet on top, but the lobster rolls (2) had very little filling for the price and the crab roll we also ordered was watery. Overall, I think this was not the best choice.
came here with my mom and we both loved it!! the restaurant is in a great location and we were lucky to get seats right on the water. i've passed by this place many times but now i see why it's always so busy. the food was great and the service was pretty fast too. i'll definitely be back to try the fried calamari and the fish tacos!!
Love this place!! Super lively, and offers classic Boston food if you're from out of town and looking for a good lobster roll. I love how it's right on the water, which is super convenient if you want to walk around the waterfront area and make a day out of it. Service was great even though we went on a busier day, and the food was incredible. The decor was super cute as well!!
My lobster roll tasted so fresh and had a good amount of lobster meat. The corn on the cob was so warm and tasty. The atmosphere was unique in the tents! It tasted great overall!
Of course, while in Boston, I just had to stop for Lobster Rolls as they are my favorite, and it's a city speciality, which had me more eager to see what it was all about here. I was told this was a pretty popular place and had great rolls, so I definitely wanted to check it out. Coming in, there wasn't much of a wait thankfully, and we were seated right off the water, which was so perfect and made the experience great from the bat. So looking at the menu, seeing Lobster rolls were $43 is always pretty crazy to me, especially given the portion size and how quickly one can be finished. I'm well aware this price is quite the norm for many of the places that have lobster rolls in Boston, but it's still pretty jarring to me, though inflation and capitalism are very real. At least this one came with two sides as opposed to others I've seen, and it's just standard pricing instead of market pricing other places have. The service here was decent, and the food came out in a nice time, which is always a plus! I found the naked lobster roll to be very yummy, and though the servings of the fries and coleslaw also appeared to be small, it was a pretty good meal overall. I'm still not sure if this visit was worth it because I'm still stuck on the prices and would be interested in seeing other restaurants and comparing.
Stopped here for lunch on our first day visiting Boston. Loved the vibe inside! We split the fish and chips and clam chowder, both were great and so glad we shared because we left stuffed. Would definitely go back again!
We arrived 15 minutes before they opened for lunch and were not the first people there. By the time we were seated, the line was long enough to fill the restaurant! This place is well loved by locals and tourists alike, and while lobster rolls don't come cheap ($38 for a "naked", which trust me is what you want in place of traditional), they are fresh, filling, and absolutely fantastic. The deck-style venue is nice and spacious, although undeniably busy. My one complaint is the service; we were very rarely checked on, and the check was brought to us 20 minutes into our time there without us requesting it. Understandable with the crowds, but something to consider. We would recommend this place for a delicious, fresh, somewhat less-touristy lobster roll read more

A very causal, fun vibing restaurant. The server was friendly and greeted us with enthusiasm. He warned us that the drinks and food were good but would be coming out in plastic cups and utensils. The personally made our drinks and his Mai tai did not disappoint. The naked lobster roll was warm and not too buttery but just right. The fries were not fancy but the perfect crispiness. I could not stop eating them. The grilled lobster was cooked perfectly! I wish I could transport this restaurant and vibe to Washington, DC. I highly recommend to try this "shack" when you are visiting the Boston Area. read more
This came recommended to us by a local, and we were excited about the location - but unfortunately the service & some of the food fell a bit short. We were seated right away and loved the ambiance of the Barking Crab. I loved that it was outdoors and on the harbor, giving it a rustic, summery & coastal feel. We were helped quickly and my boyfriend ordered a Margarita that he liked. When it came to ordering, my boyfriend got the Hot Lobster Roll. I was between the crab cakes & crab roll. I asked the waiter what he thought; he told me crab cakes so I went with those. When the food arrived I was shocked. The crab cakes were three tiny cakes that looked like food from a lunch lady. I was pretty upset my server didn't give any heads up - along the lines of "the crab cakes are better, but it's just not a ton of food". They were especially overpriced for the small portion. Fortunately they were tasty. The lobster roll was delicious and buttery, definitely better than what I've had in the Midwest! We finished our food quickly and couldn't get ahold of our server to pay the check. We were already a bit ticked off, and now we were stuck waiting when we wanted to leave - it felt like our server was avoiding us as he served everyone around us without checking in or looking at us. Finally, another staff member came over and checked us out. If you're looking for a quick lobster roll, try here, but there are plenty in Boston where you might have a better experience. read more
Honestly have no idea how this place has such mediocre reviews. We were pumped to only have to wait a few minutes for a walk-in table on a Friday night. This place is very low-key, come as you are but the food is still top notch. We were seated with a great view of the harbor and promptly served our clams and lobster after. Came for a snack at one of the places we had frequented in the past. It wasn't too busy as we came in the late afternoon. We had the fish and chips, the lobster bisque, the clam chowder, steamers and the crab dip. Everything was delicious. The bisque and the chowder were excellent, the fish and chips were very fresh and the fry was perfect. The steamers were very fresh and the crab dip was tasty. read more

This place is great in the summer. It is open air and right on the water on like a deck. The service is quick but nothing personalized. It's a busy place so there is often a line. The food is pretty good, not the cheapest but your also paying for the ambiance. You'll be full after your meal so no need to order too much. read more
Love that the Barking Crab is nestled right on the ocean which makes for a beautiful view if you are lucky enough to get an outer facing table. The service was great, and totally not what I was expecting! This circus tent style bar/restaurant gives major college bar vibes but the wait staff do a great job of covering one another and I never felt I was waiting on anything. Atmosphere and vibe check the box but where I felt the meal fell short was unfortunately the food. We ordered oysters, mussels, and the Connecticut style lobster roll. Overall appearance of the raw bar items were underwhelming- a blend between portion size and oversized plating made the dish look underwhelming. The mussels were in a pool of a delicious broth, unfortunately so was the bread. We removed it immediately from the bathe but it was too late as the bread was a soggy mess to eat. Overall the spot seems to be popular among tourists, I would look elsewhere unless you are trying to mark it off the list. read more

First trip to Boston. Heard the Barking Crab was a must. The line was long but moved quickly. We waited for a bit before getting drinks, but shortly after things moved along. Food was delicious! Lobster rolls were incredible. Oysters and clam chowder pretty decent. The ambiance was entertaining. Funny signs posted. Will return! read more

The Barking Crab has a lot of potential to be more than they are, and I think that's where their head is at, but the execution has gaps. Both nights we went by during our vacation they had a line out front, good sign right? Standard procedures for a restaurant with high demand, all members of your party must be present to get your seat. While in line we rotated through the bathroom which is an experience all on its own. Small, dark, am I at the club? The restaurant and bar area itself feels like a trendy spot. Low lighting, with Christmas type lights strung to give it ambiance. Not a bad first impression. Upon being sat by the trendy hosts with sunglasses at 9pm, we noticed our chairs and table weren't clean. No other staff member in sight. We snagged the host who came over and lightly brushed aside some of the visible food particles using Clorox wipes. This left the chairs wet for two of our members that went to the bathroom. I was able to secure a few cocktail napkins at the bar to resolve. We also fought hard with the table that was loosely attached. It spun and was uneven causing drinks to constantly spill. It was quite some time before we got help at the table with our orders as well. Seems like a place so busy would have more staff on a busy night? This was a Friday and we only saw two servers covering the whole floor. We all ordered the lobster rolls, two of us got warm and two got the classic cold. The rolls were a bit large leaving a lot of bread behind after biting and getting the meat. Flavor was ok but nothing special. Solid fries. My friends also got mussels which they enjoyed and thought had a pretty good flavor. Overall, could have been an off night. Looking over other reviews it seems a bit 50-50. Staff and the bathroom situation were definitely the gaps. read more

Barking Crab was recommended to us by a local and this is a basic and casual restaurant but great! We ordered 12 oysters and 6 clams from the raw bar for lunch on a Sunday, and the size of the oysters were INSANE! Largest we've ever eaten. Very filling. The actual inside of the restaurant was shut for the winter but their outside tent/patio is open for the season and is enclosed with lots of heaters so it was very comfortable. Decor was super cute. Views were great! Downside was that all their draft beers were served in plastic cups. read more

We had a great time here. We went for the ambiance and fun of eating open air on the water and loved it. Service was top notch even though it was very busy late on a Saturday afternoon. We had no wait, and although the folks behind us may have had a short one, tables seemed to turn quickly. Of course we wanted good food (and we got it!) but we weren't looking for a high-end dining experience so we didn't order the pricy lobster, and we weren't disappointed when the chowder arrived in a disposal bowl and our utensils were plastic. I wanted to go light so rather than an entree I ordered the crab cake appetizer. There were three to the order - the perfect serving size for me. I loved them! The hungriest among us ordered the Fisherman's Platter, a bit of everything, and was equally as happy with his choice. He really liked the clam strips. He graciously let us sample his "sampler," and we liked them too. Our water glasses never went empty. Our servers kept the table cleared of dirty dishes. And our check arrived promptly. We liked the background music and had a blast reading the quirky signs you can spot all over the restaurant. It was a great stop for us. read more
Went back again yesterday. The gorgeous New England weather prompted outdoorsy lunch over our favorite food. The wait lines were long and while it seemed to move along, it was a long wait. We were 'seated' by the water. Well, we were just given the menus and pointed to the table we could go to. Nothing warm and fuzzy here. The service was lacking yesterday, perhaps they were short staffed? We ordered our apps and main meal all at once. Perhaps a mistake. Our mains arrived before our appetizers did!!! We had gotten the oysters and coconut shrimp for appetizers; have had better oysters and coconut shrimp elsewhere. My Caesar salad was nice, lobster roll great and fried fish taco delicious. Lunch was good. We were looking to order more beers but our server was not in sight. After spotting the server, we ordered beers along with waters. Beers came but no water. The decor is vibrant and fun, location is top-notch, food is good, service could use some improvement. read more
Barking Crab has been my go-to answer to "if you were in Boston for only one day, where would you eat." The lobster rolls are fantastic and can either be tradional or naked. The traditional is more Maine style (cold w/ mayo) and the naked is more Connecticut style (warm w/ butter). On top of that, the clam chowder is also excellent! Cannot recommend Barking Crab enough! read more

For a tourist attraction, it would get a 5 for proximity to water, local flavor, etc. For quality of a lobster roll, I'd say a 3.5. Fried a solid 4 So, when traveling I have to make quick tough choices that typically start with proximity to a brewery I really want to visit. For this trip, that brewery was Trillium and while there I asked what lobster roll places they recommended within walking distance. Unfortunately their number one recommended place was closed on Tuesdays so I went with option b - the Barking Crab. I arrived after a short walk to the old building on the water and sat at the bar. My lager choice was spot on and then I chose to go with the warm butter lobster roll (as opposed to the Maine style that is served cold). My fries were cooked well - great temp, crispy outside and hot in the middle. But way way over salted. So I give them a 4 - cooked at a 5 and salted at a 2 so it's a generous 4, but I enjoyed them. The lobster roll? Yes, it's probably 5oz of lobster meat but I didn't have a scale. The issue was the meat prep - it was over cooked. It's incredibly easy to overlook shellfish but at $35, I expect your cook to know how to avoid those pitfalls. read more

My friend recommended we try this place before we headed for the airport for our flight back. Was not disappointed and content my stuffed on the plane ride back. Lobster Bisque: Pretty good although a little more tomatoy and sweeter than what i've had in the past. There was only one bit of a lobster claw so was a little disappointed there wasn't more. Overall though still good. Surprisingly dipping fries in it was pretty good. 4/5 Fish and Chips: For fried fish this was a lot lighter than I had expected. Exceptionally crisp and the fish meat was so tender and fall apart. Fries were also good. 5/5 Would definitely comeback and maybe try their lobster rolls if i'm ever back in Boston. read more

The ambiance is fun with the mix of music anyone who graduated in the 90s would recognize, and the staff was very nice. I was happy with the amount of fresh sweet lobster in my roll but the bread was kinda stale and the portion of coleslaw was teeny tiny compared to the fries. read more

Be ready to stand in line. Better hope it's not summer , like me. Summer sucks and standing there was harsh.... However , the food made me forget my sweaty boobs and smearing eyebrows. I recommend all of it and try to take your time. ENJOY!!!! It's a great happy place and view ain't so bad. Ladies room is too tiny to handle, made me feel like Andre the giant. It's on the water , what did I expect. There's rules posted for this spot about chilling there , it's not a drinking chilling kinda place. They give you 75mins I think, then who knows, we just ate and left , things to do, other places to see. One side is patio, the other is a regular building. Overall, with my peeps and the spot, it was a brilliantly delicious memorable night! read more

Fast service. Ordered the hot crab dip, clam chowder, oysters & lobster. Skip the dip & lobster. Dip seemed more like a tomato dip. Lobster roll probably would've been better. Can never go wrong with oysters and chowder. read more
Definitely don't go during a lunch rush hour. We went there was a short line; went by fast. Service was on point! Friendly and fast! Lobster roll was delicious! Had to order the crab roll because....well why not? LOL Place had an outdoor beach vibe which I loved. Bathroom- don't wait to the point where you can't hold it. There's usually a line! Not sure about parking. Because we walked! Best part of Boston is the accessibility with places and walking. Eat. Walk it off. Eat again.....walk it off lol read more

Atmosphere is fabulous! I love all the decor and signs all around the tent. We ordered rice, crab cakes, veggies & a lobster roll. TikTok and reviews of the barking crab brought us in and I unfortunately was very disappointed! The lobster roll I received looked nothing like every single picture/video I've seen from the barking crab and our server never came to check on us, just sat at the host station in chairs with the other workers, scrolling on their phones and just hanging out. As a server myself- it was embarrassing. Although it's clear the barking crab is an extremely casual and laid back place so I guess the owners or management wouldn't care that the face of their tourist trap is hanging out and glued to their cellphones... So sad this place looked awesome on social media. But like they say, looks can be deceiving... move along. read more
I came here last Friday night and got seated right away. It looks like only a small part of the restaurant is open at this time. The view was pretty and the service was friendly. I got the Lobster roll and was really underwhelmed. The fish and chips were just ok. I think this is just a touristy spot. read more
The food was okay. The clam chowder was tasty and the fingerling potatoes were good. The fried oysters needed some seasoning in the batter. The spiritless bourbon wasn't bad. Probably just need to add more fruit offset the syrup flavor. It reminded me of maple. I did not like the woman's bathroom or the signs outside. Barking crab is a must try in Boston! These lobster rolls are absolutely incredible. If you sit outside in the tent, it's quite the experience! The service were very kind and were very attentive. This lively, outdoorsy hangout by the water offers a fantastic beer selection and top-notch service that's faster than a Boston driver in the breakdown lane. The food? Delicious, but let's just say you might want to order two of everything if you're hungry--those portions are as modest as a New Englander's emotions. Expect a soundtrack that'll keep your toes tapping, though you might need to crank up the volume on your conversations to compete with the music and the wind. And heads up--getting there might involve a bit of a traffic tango, but once you're settled with some authentic New England seafood, you'll agree it was worth the wait! read more

The Barking Crab is the best place to eat in Boston. Controversial opinion, I know. I lived in Mass well into my 40's and I have been everywhere in Boston. Each time I visit, I go to the Barking Crab and I eat alone or with friends. Here's why: 1. There is no better indoor-outdoor seating in this part of Boston- which is the best part of Boston, i.e. Fort Point/South Boston/Seaport District. BC has a roof but only half walls and then open walls which are covered in plastic when it's freezing or raining and the plastic is raised and open all other times. This means it's an open air restaurant. If that matters to you during cold, RSV, Covid and Flu season, which is now year-round, then eat here. Sitting at the outer seats means you are on, but above, the water. Boats, buildings, sun setting... Can't beat it. There is also a lot of outdoor seating with umbrellas- though, those aren't needed if you go at the right time of day when the sun is not directly on the patio which begins at late afternoon. If you go off hours you will have the pick of these seats. Bostonians usually eat inside. No idea why. 2. The fish can't be beat. You can get it fancier elsewhere, but not better. 3. Service is fast. There can be a bit of regionally appropriate grumpiness on the part of the servers but this can be lessened if you speak quickly and decisively. It's plastic cups, buddy, no one wants to talk ten minutes about whether the fish was sustainably harvested or where you should go for dessert. 4. Fan Pier Park or The Harbor Walk is right there. BC has been there thirty years- longer than the Seaport District even existed. Now it has the benefit of being in the newest, most beautiful part of the city. After dinner, you can walk on the boardwalk and sit and look at the best view of the city. Or, you can walk from here to the North End or Faneuil Hall or South Station. All of which are a mile away or less. Things to know before you go: 1. It isn't cheap. But there's no cheap seafood in Boston. Anywhere near the BC is more expensive. If you are looking for cheap food you are in the wrong city. Or country. Or decade. 2. It isn't dressy or "upscale." If you are looking for that, walk along the water to Davios (also reviewed here.) 3. There's no parking there. None. But there are garages in walking distance. 4. It is on a street. A quiet, virtually untraveled street. But it's a street. Twice, I have seen toddlers run out of the restaurant and into the street. I think the parents believe it's blocked off and is merely a walk-way. But it isn't. The only thing on the street is this restaurant/bar and a couple others. Tether your toddlers. Or leave them home, even better. This is a bar, too. 5. Just order a Harpoon. The brewery is down the street. They have a regular IPA and a 'Rec League' IPA which is low alcohol content. Both on tap. Downsides: 1. It is very loud. Even outside, because there's like four speakers right over the tables. I don't understand why it's so loud, really. It does not add anything to the experience and if it were just turned down a tiny bit... Also, the restaurant across the street also has speakers on so if you are outside closest to the street you will hear both restaurants music. You can talk, it's not THAT loud, but you will have to raise your voice. 2. Bathrooms aren't great. It's giving Public Bathroom in a Park vibes, even though it's not open to the pubic. Boston is notorious for lack of bathrooms so places that have them don't have to try too hard. Davios might let you use their bathrooms, which are amazing, if you are quiet about it and very nice. Or just get a drink there after dinner at BC. 3. No reservations. This isn't a problem, really. If you go off hours it's definitely not a problem. Otherwise, you'll give your name and the size of the party and wait. In the sun, this can be hot. But if you are alone, tell them you are happy to eat at the bar and you'll get right in. read more

Don't think so, but not sure. I don't think it will be the most dog friendly environment. Packed pretty tight with not much room for our friends to be comfy. I suggest giving the store a call.

Yes, there is a garage within minutes of restaurant.
Do they take reservations?
They do, but you have to book on the not user-friendly link they ask you to use on their website. The link hardly has availability even one month out, which often seems like there's a glitch. Well, don't waste your time, because they don't answer…
I called and they said they don't take same day reservations do they take walkins?
They do take walk ins. There are 2 different host stations depending on whether you want to sit on the outdoor patio or inside. They're not super organized to be honest. But there's usually space at the bar as well!
Do they have a kids menu?
Yes, they do! $9 per kid meal. Mac and Cheese, chicken tenders, etc.
Are you pet friendly in the outdoor area?
I am not 100% certain by my opinion would be to try not to bring your pet because it is so crowded that It might be unfair and uncomfortable for the pet. Just saying.
