I am sad to write this review for Barkley's as they have been grooming my dogs for 4+ years, I have 2 dogs, 1 being a senior dog who has skin tags and I every time remind them about the tags/warts and on several occasions they have nicked the dog. I understand that it is a tough job and I am thoroughly understanding that it could happen even if it happens a number of times..what I can't understand anymore is how you don't follow up in a few days to ensure that the dog and wound cut/laceration is healing okay,. This last time my dog received a pretty good cut on his neck, I don't remember a tag there but my husband was told at pick up that the dog had been agitated today. Which I don't know I wont dispute I was not there. But he has a nervous demeanor not usually agitated. But anyway after about 3 weeks the wound didn't heal properly and became infected and has cost us $158 at the vet, cleaning it out (debreeding it) receiving antibiotic shots and pills for at home. I called Barkley's and talked to Roger one of the owners and told him everything including this is not the first time the dog has been nicked. I told him I would like them to split the vet bill with me. He said he had to talk to the other owner first before agreeing to this, Really???? you cut my dog... I have been a really good customer and spread the good word about your small business. In the end I guess you don't want or need my business AND YOU DON'T REALLY CARE ABOUT YOUR CUSTOMER MY POOR DOG. No more good words from me. Sorry. Take your pet to another establishment, where love and tender caring is the first business at hand. read more

We have been bringing our bernedoodle to Barkley's for just about 3 years. We absolutely love it and we think he does too. On this last visit he ran to the door to go in. He always comes back with a great haircut, smelling wonderful. The staff is super friendly too. We bring our other dog for her nail trimming. Easy walk in for that service. I brought my dog here about 3 times before today, I absolutely loved how happy my dog was when I picked her of from her grooming. Today, was a completely different story. After I picked up my dog, she started acting strange. She didn't want to be touched and became sensitive when you held her. Before going to bed, I turned her around because she kept liking underneath her. Come to find multiple cut marks, swollen rash/razor burns. I am extremely upset of how they treated my poor dog. Excuse me, I am very good about taking him to the vet. And he's extremely healthy, and his teeth look very good according to my vet of which I BELIEVE. He hates getting his teeth brushed which is why I take him to get brushed, and that has never EVER HAPPENED. The reason his teeth were bleeding when you brushed them was because you and your employer don't know what the hell you are doing. MOST AWFUL EXPERIENCE WITH BARKLEY'S PET SPA!!! I was referred to Roger by several people I've met at the dog park. I brought my soft-coated Wheaten Terrier, Bruce for a trim in April and there were no problems (Collette worked on him) so I made an appointment with Roger one month later for a haircut. Roger was not there at check-in time so the very young lady who checked us in asked me what I wanted and I explicitly told her a puppy cut (which is never a shave). Roger does at least six Wheatens and this breed does not get shaved unless there is a matting problem. They have sensitive skin and sensitive personalities. Well ... Roger claims he was told to shave Bruce. He didn't call me to ask if this was what I wanted - he just shaved him. I told Roger that I was shocked this happened and he admitted he should have called. I was charged $80 for this disaster. Later I realized I should not have paid it and Roger should not have accepted payment. When we arrived home, Bruce kept darting from room to room and licking the scrotum area, scratching himself constantly and would not eat or lay down and rest from the pain. I saw a sizable bright red sore spot and the next morning it was worse. I texted a photo of the area to Roger and told him I was on my way to the vet. Bruce was given pills that would help with itching and also calm him and a medicated shampoo. The vet visit cost $225.00. The next day I took Bruce to see Roger to show him how red hot the spot is and I hand delivered a letter asking the owner, Angie for reimbursement for the grooming and the vet charge and that I expected her to handle the matter with integrity and professionalism. During this time I went on Yelp and read many, many reviews which were either outstanding or disastrous!!! Many dogs have been injured in the past and apparently nothing has been done to stop this insanity! Angie called me yesterday to tell me she will reimburse me for the grooming but not for the vet bill. She told me that Bruce must have been injured before he got there (basically calling me a liar), that Roger did not cause the injury (after Roger himself had apologized for hurting him), that I could have bought those medicines myself at any pet store and the injury didn't require a vet visit. I advised her I was giving her a chance to right this wrong doing, that this experience should never happen in a dog spa in Rancho Bernardo, and that pet owners expect their pets to be handled carefully. She became hostile and irrational at which time I ended the call. Neighbors, you need to read the Yelp reviews yourselves and make wise choices about your beloved pets. They are voiceless and vulnerable and it is not okay to hurt them and dismiss the matter with no conscience at all. Take a good look at the photo I have attached. read more

We took our dog Jake to Barkley's because rumor has it they are very good groomers when it comes to senior dogs. I was referred by next door and they raved about this place. They mentioned the groomers are fabulous and take great care of your dogs.So had to try them out! Thank his I did. I took my Bishop Frise Jake in for a full groom. They did a fabulous job and were very good with him. He hates to get groomed. It's very traumatic for him. We love our dog and want to make sure his grooming is by a loving groomer that understands dogs especially our pain in the rear Jake. They came in early to accommodate our work schedule. They were very reasonable and fast when it comes to grooming. We dropped Jake off at 8:15am and picked him up at 10:30am. I recommend this place to everyone looking for an outstanding dog groomer. I have taken my dog here several times. I'm sure many of you feel the same way, that your dog is absolutely irreplaceable, so you feel protective when you leave your dog anywhere, right? I never worry when I drop my pet off at Barkley's. The owner seems very nice and engaged. My groomers name is Alexis. She does a great job. Reasonably priced shop and they listen to you and follow your instructions. I don't like my dog to be there longer than necessary so I pay $10 extra for express grooming - worth the money! read more

Not impressed... Michelle took my dog when I brought him in. She acted like they don't have time for him even though we had an appointment. She whisked him away and told me she'd call me when he was done. No time to discuss how I'd like him trimmed, etc. When I returned to pick him up, all I heard was how difficult he was. Well... He's a 4 month old puppy and this was his first grooming. Guess not a good experience for either of us! To top it off, his hair was very uneven. I used Barkley's several months ago for their dog boarding. I made an appointment several days in advance, but when I arrived, the owner (who takes the dogs to his home for boarding) had left already for the day. The worker at the store said he would drop off my dog at the owner's home after the store closed. Everything went well with the boarding after that incident. Then three weeks ago I made an appointment for grooming one week, and boarding for seven nights the following week. The grooming appointment went well. I had spoken directly with the owner to book the appointment for boarding. I showed up at the store at 4:45 pm the day of the appointment (their voicemail message says they are open until 5:30 pm), and the store was already closed. I left a message on their voicemail, but did not receive a call back until the following morning. They left a message offering an apology, but it was too late for me to take my dog in, as we were already at the airport. I was very disappointed that Barkley's left me scrambling the night before I was leaving on a planned vacation to find a place to board my dog. They do not have a good system in place to book their dog boarding appointments so that they actually remember the appointments. I will not be using them in the future for grooming or boarding. read more

I own two Pomeranian and was hoping to find a good groomer. I saw some great reviews for Barkley's. I went they had good pricing and a coupon! So I made an appointment. I only took my female Pom because the boy was to young. Everyone was very friendly. I asked the girl if she had cut Poms before, she had. I told her I would like minimal cutting just lightly shape. Poms have double coat and they are not supposed to be trimmed to short. It can ruin their coat. She said it would be an hour or so and they would call me. I left her at 12 and I ended up calling at 4 to ask if she was done. She was. Yay! I went to get her. The lady seemed to really love her, which was very sweet. I was a little embarrassed to be honest when I saw that she had practically buzzed my dogs butt fur off (can a dog look scandalous ???) Way shorter than we agreed (minimal cutting!!!) My dog didn't mind but her fur grew back frizzy, it use to be soft and silky. I would also like to note that she was very thirsty when she got back. They are five pound dogs so they don't drink a ton. I assume they didn't give her any water when she was there. They were very nice but just like a bad hairstylist I won't be going back. I have used Barkley's twice now, as I moved too far away from my previous groomer :( The appointments have always been kept to their original times, and my dog is always finished with his appointment on time or sooner. They report how well behaved he was, and he comes out with all body parts in tact (can't say that for every groomer I have met while I have lived here), tail wagging. Although it is a bit further than I would like to have to go for a there-and-back within 2 hours, it is a great place and, so far, super trustworthy. read more

I had taken my 2 dogs to Barkleys at least 3 times prior to this disastrous last visit. I would have even given them 4 stars or more. This last time was so stunned by their appearance I must have been in a daze because I actually paid them $115 The multi poo had her tail shaved removing her beautiful fanned tail. Her ears were shaved and cut to bottom of ear. Her tail was a long skinny weenie. Awful. The poodle minpin looks like a multi poo and His face wasn't done correctly and neither was the other dog. The drop/pick up area is very small 8x9' with desk; when 4 other clients are picking up it's chaos. I have a special leash for the one dog. They couldn't find it. Tried giving me one of their cheap temps. I would have been upset at any circumstances but having had services there 3 times before why would I worry Only one dog had any matts. And they were around her neck, but manageable. It has been a couple months but I'm still angry (shaved tail) really? You take your chances going there. Is it a good day or screw up day. read more

I brought my dog here today to get her nails trimmed and although she hates it, I thought I was taking her to a professional business. When I got there, there was a lot of yelping going on in the back, which is understandable because it's a groomer. When I picked my dog up, they told me that they were not able to trim her nails and I asked why and they said that she was too aggressive and they were not even able to approach her without her nipping at them and throwing a "doggy fit". I know for a fact that this is not the case because I have had multiple vets approach her with needles, Infants approach her and tugged on her tail, and everyone has said that she is extremely well behaved. This makes me think that they are not handling canines properly and need to be reported to animal services, PETA, or any other place people reading this can report them to. We're very happy with the grooming service. Our dog looked great with a cute little scarf when he was finished. He is a very young dog and I've never seen him so calm and relaxed. He was totally chill for the rest of the day. Our previous groomer wasn't brushing him completely. He had some matting and Barkleys took the time to completely brush and trim without shaving. My two little terriers were in desparate need of a serious haircut and full grooming. They have never been to Barkley's before, but I can say this is where all their future groomings will be done. Anna took care of Lilly and Valentina and did a beautiful grooming on them. I can honestly say that Anna and all the other staff at Barkley's are very kind and wonderful. Anna found a tick on Lilly, who has been venturing into the tall grass on the hill. This was caused by a disappearing gardener and so much rain. I took my bosses dog here to have a full service groom. I specifically instructed the employee that we did not want her buzzed and I picked a hair length (number 4) off the example length list they had displayed. The girl said she would not use a razor but would use scissors and would just lighten her and trim her like I asked before she took her away. I was then told it would take 3 hours and too come back and get her around 5-5:30 when our appointment was at 2pm. We arrived and were told that they haven't even started Hallie yet and it would be another hour, so we waited. While we waited we could hear the workers blasting music which worried me because they seemed to be more focused on "how on a role pandora was today" rather than taking care of the animals they were grooming. Hallie came out at 6:20 and was completely buzzed proving to me that they did not care about our dog but we more engaged in the other employers and the music. Her nice luscious coat was shaved off and clearly was not trimmed with scissors. This is totally absurd and not worth the 55$ for a full service groom. I do not recommend this place to anyone. Horrible service and a clear lack of understanding on how to groom animals. read more
