The FOOD 5/5 stars. MAC N CHEESE, pretzel, buffalo cauliflower, chicken tenders, fries. Not a BAD item on their menu. The portions INSANE, so it's better if you share! The SERVICE 4/5 stars. Our server was truly amazing. She deserved the 5/5. Great recommendations, super genuine and fun, had the best energy and was CONSTANTLY checking in on us; however, a couple of the other workers could have been a little bit more open with communication. We were sitting against the window at the high top wraparound bar tables (feels like an extension of the bar), so the bar is easy to order from and was our go to as soon as we arrived. The bartender took our order, but was standoffish as if we were doing something foreign or a big "no no". Finally the server in charge of our area told us that the bartenders are in charge of the bar and there are other servers for all the other tables/zones. If we were told that from the beginning, we would have made sure to follow the order of the place and order from the correct server. A few of us truly felt bad, but now we know when we go in next time what to expect. Barleymash is always a great time, so we always want to make sure we are doing it right! During our Gaslamp bounce around we stumbled upon Barleymash by looks alone. Though once inside the beauty wasn't just skin deep. Bartenders were attentive and friendly, and what a great beer list. They also have some very fancy bourbons and spirits! The vibe is so laid back and chill. A lot of industry people were having a blast and when happy hour started it got pretty crowded. Our server Brooke made our experience exceptional! She is kind, attentive and gave us guidance on the top favorites--tenders, wings and burgers--including the noteworthy Champ burger. Without Brooke I wouldn't have tried the Lime in the Coconut mocktail which tastes like the summer break you need. She made our first time in so special! Barleymash is the most upscale sports bar I've seen with enough tv's in just the right places that my husband and I could each subtly watch a game while still facing each other. The layout felt more classy and intimate that way. The house made sauces are stand out. The buffalo was my favorite with apple bourbon barbecue as a close second. The extremely fresh and crispy tenders come with three of the house sauces giving you the perfect chance to try them out. There is a kid's menu and I was pleasantly surprised how family friendly it felt--from plastic cups with lids to a high top high chair! Came here with one of my girlfriends after visiting the Museum of Illusions and let me tell you -- the vibe was vibing! First things first, this is the Gaslamp, so parking can absolutely be a challenge. You'll probably have better luck parking off Sixth or Seventh Avenue and walking over to Fifth where the restaurant is located. Just plan ahead and you'll be fine. When you walk in, you immediately notice the open-concept layout. The bar sits right in the middle with dining all around it. It gives pub energy but still feels like a full-service restaurant. There are plenty of TVs playing sports and entertainment, and the noise level is about average -- lively but you can still hold a conversation. They can easily accommodate both small and larger groups, and overall it just has a really nice, welcoming vibe. The staff? Super friendly and inviting. Our waitress, Diana, was sweet and very accommodating. She walked us through the house specials, happy hour deals, and what was popular on the menu. Love when servers actually know the menu! Now let's get into the food. We ordered the short ribs over fries topped with guacamole, sour cream, and beer cheese. Very savory and definitely shareable. The short rib itself was tender and pull-apart good, but it did have more fat than I would've liked and could've used a bit more seasoning. Nothing major though -- a little salt and pepper fixed it right up. We also ordered the wings -- you get 10 per order and can split them into two flavors (which I love). We chose Buffalo and Mango Habanero and asked for them to be baked a little longer. They came out PERFECT. Crispy, hot, and flavorful. Now the ranch... it's definitely house-made and unique. I was kind of on the fence about it. It worked okay with the wings, but dipping the veggies in it? That was a no for me. One thing I will say -- the food came out piping hot and beautifully presented. You can tell the kitchen actually cares about quality and presentation. Portion sizes are generous. What we ordered was perfect to share. If you're super hungry, you may want your own entrée. But for a casual meal with a friend? Sharing is plenty and you'll leave full. I'll definitely be back to try their poke nachos (they looked sooo good walking past us) and the burgers -- they were huge and looked incredibly flavorful. The crew was efficient with their splendid teamwork. Our waitress was Shannon T. And we tried a variety of items from-- iron fries, burgers, flatbread,and salads. Everyone enjoyed their dishes. We went here for dinner on a Saturday night and had an excellent experience. The restaurant is located in the heart of the Gas Lamp district, which is quite lively at night. We went for dinner but I noticed that there are TV screens everywhere so this is obviously a good place to eat/drink and watch sports. Hence the label sports bar. But this is more than a sports bar. The food is a notch above sport bar grub. There are the usual pizzas, burgers, loaded fries, etc etc. But also some high end entrees such as steak. The drink menu is extensive and the draft beer selection was a whole page of single spaced options. The wife and I each had a craft beer to start. They are not inexpensive at about $11 a glass, but they were tasty and exactly what we needed. I had the black and blue burger and it was excellent quality meat. I asked for medium and got medium well but the burger was not dry. The bacon was crispy as I requested. It was a tasty burger and the flavors came together well. The wife had the Burbon BBQ burger which came with bacon, fried onion strips, cheese (I think) and BBQ sauce. She loved the burger. Both of our fries were crispy and hot, but the star was homemade ketchup. Delicious. Each burger was $21.50 which is high but the quality and taste were there. This is a large sports bar-restaurant in downtown San Diego. We were greeted at the entrance and sat right away. It wasn't yet dinner time so they weren't full. Our server came by to take our drink order and gave us time to review the menu. There were a lot of options that looked good - I ended up getting the Bacon Ranch Barleymac (mac n cheese). Hubby got the Black and Bleu Hamburger with a side Caesar. The food arrived hot but my husband's burger, which he ordered to be cooked medium, was rare on the inside. He had taken two bites and decided it was too raw. The manager came by to see how our meal was and he told her it was raw. She didn't offer a different option or a new burger - only to put his bit-into burger back on the grill. This was off-putting because the bun was drenched from the raw meat juices and the thought of someone's germs on the grill where they would cook other meals was unappealing. In the end, they removed it from the bill. My mac n cheese didn't have much ranch on it - just regular mac n cheese with bacon on the top. I asked for a side of ranch to dip my bites into - it's what I thought the dish would taste like. I just wasn't impressed by it. I don't know that we will be back when we are in San Diego next. There are a lot of restaurants we've eaten at and I would return to those or visit a new one before returning here. read more

Also, some higher end choices such as an ahi tuna salad. Tried the all in fries and it was a pretty large dish with a lot pulled pork and beef brisket on top. The fries were not crisp though and many were soft or soggy. The place was crazy packed since it was an NFL Sunday. I came here during Comic Con weekend during their advertised Blockbuster themed bar (spoiler: the bar was minimally blockbuster themed). This place is BIG and was PACKED on Saturday night. We managed to grab a table after waiting under 5 minutes which felt like a miracle. Midnight Margaritas 4.5/5, this was one of the themed drinks they were offering, based off the midnight margaritas served in the movie "Practical Magic" w/ Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. This tasted like a piña colada done w/ tequila instead of rum but this was delicious, if a little sour. Chicken tenders 5/5, okay so admittedly my thoughts when I think chicken tenders in a sports bar = I am expecting a few dinosaur chicken nuggets + a ton of fries. Just went this past weekend and the food was good for a bar. Lets not mistake this for a restaurant, its a bar that serves food. Burgers, mac, wings and so on. If you want to have a nice dinner at a restaurant there are other places next to it. I was there for a few beers, fries, wings, mac and a salad. They were all good, but the fries were on the soggy side but still good. The mac was great. Lets talk price; this place is not cheap so expect to spend some money. The only issue I had was the "surcharge" AKA "service fee" AKA "service charge" it might of been fine during the pandemic and right after, but we are 4years later now. so, the surcharge was supposed to cover the workers meaning the staff's medical and workers comp to help out the restaurant recover then eventually get removed. This place gets packed on the weekends according to all the reviews and when I was there it was pretty busy, so whey are they still charging their the "surcharge" FYI - all those expenses the restaurant makes to cover their employees is baked into the price of the dish. An order of $12 fries covers the staff's workers comp, health insurance, restaurants water, gas & electric bill, that $18 margarita also covers them. This restaurant might have a good vibe, ok bar food and beer, but they are still stealing or over charging their customers by adding that surcharge. The staff is great and its an owners decision to remove that surcharge, because Im sure the staff is tired of answering why theres a surcharge on everyone's bill. Best thing to do is take that percentage off the tip... so if you were going to tip 18%, now you tip 15% after taking off that surcharge. read more

Been here twice over the years. Stopped in for lunch during a hectic Comic-Con because there was no wait. Food and ambiance are good. It's a good place for a casual meal and they have a lot of TVs in here which makes sense because I think I've seen them advertise playing sports games or something here. Staff were friendly and attentive. I got the Bleu Shroom mac and cheese. I love that they use cavatappi noodles. In my opinion it's the superior mac and cheese noodle. The addition of bleu cheese gave it this tangy bite. Towards the end I was cheese overloaded, but that's on me fully aware of what I ordered. The only thing I disliked was that their menus say they add a 4% surcharge to all tabs to cover rising costs and employee wages/ benefits. Just raise the prices then. read more

As a San Diegan, I avoid most places like Barley Mash, and the Gaslamp, like avoiding the 5 south on a weekday afternoon. They're usually loud, with disinterested service, average food and stepped up prices from neighborhood places. I'd say that Barley Mash gets a pass. We were seated quickly, had two great servers, the flatbread was actually top tier, and the drink menu had a good selection and not just "cocktails on draft".
