It's good bbq here, but I had much better ones at other bbq restaurants, and with more of a really strong smokey smell and taste on their Bbqs. We had 2 cool servers Marfy & Jason who were always very attentive on anything we might need. Parking as alway is a pain here, it's Gaslamp so it's very busy downtown 'coz it's close to the Convention center and the Stadium and there's lots of restaurants around here. Shity onion rings, served thin and cold, couldn't even taste the beer batter. Decent BBQ Brisket was moist & tender but cut a bit too thick for a sandwich. IMHO if brisket is on a sandwich shouldn't it be shredded or thin sliced? The real star however was the chili! Very meaty for 'chili bean" chili. To date it is the best chili I have had in San Diego! The staff are friendly. The inside was very rustic. Could use some updating. The food was overpriced for the quality. I ordered a chicken Caesar salad and the dressing clearly came from a bottle. Nothing special about the chicken. I tried my sister's pulled pork and that was flavorless. It didn't taste like barbecue it tasted it more like boiled pork. The service here is always good and the employees are super nice; especially Jacob and Marfelia, they always go above and beyond for their customers. What a great place to eat. We both found something quickly that we wanted to eat. I had the BBQ ribs, half rack and oh my goodness - what a HUGE portion. The french fries took up the whole platter! My husband had a burger that wasn't exactly as ordered but he was happy with the taste. The service was a bit slow but as we weren't in a hurry that was okay. It was a bit dark inside and quite rustic but I guess that's what they were going for being a western bbq influenced restaurant. Went again the other day, I lowered my rating to 3-stars, I may have gotten a little over excited at my star assignment last time. I did still use extra sauce (so did the hubs), our side was french fries and they were really good (I can't remember the last time we had them, so that may have contributed to why we thought they were so good). We had the same waitress as before, she's still friendly and answered questions knowledgably. We went right after the pet parade on Saturday and were surprised that, once again, it wasn't very busy. A HUGE complaint this trip is how sticky the condiment bottles were - each of them was gross to touch. Not just a little sticky, but flat-out gross. You could SEE they were going to be sticky. I *completely* understand that folks use their sticky fingers to add sticky sauce, I get that, however these things need to be wiped down after EVERY meal. Especially since the place is as slow as it was each of my two visits. One thing that surprises me is that the menu doesn't tell you how much meat is included. This is a BBQ spot, so I thought I was going to get some DAWG-ASS wings! I... in fact... did not. I had an order of Buffalo wings and an order of Buffalo. They're just basic-fried chicken wings that are thrown in a basket then sprinkled with sauce. Yes, "sprinkled". My wings weren't even fully covered. Come on man. Yeah, I could've sent them to be covered, but there's sauce on the table so I did what I had to do, but they were okay. Buffalo over BBQ of course, but not by much. I wouldn't get them again. My friend had The Duke Burger which is a thick beef patty, pulled pork, Swiss cheese, BBQ sauce, lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles. He loved it, so it was clear that I made a mistake. Lol. I really wanted to like Gaslamp BBQ, but it was a major disappointment. We ordered the John Wayne Platter with BBQ ribs, pulled pork, and one side. First red flag: the ribs tasted like they had been sitting around and just microwaved before serving. Dry, bland, and definitely not what you'd expect from a BBQ place. Only one side came with the platter, which was ridiculous. Half the plate was filled with a giant mound of potato salad--so cold it literally hurt my teeth. They could've easily cut that portion down and offered a second side. We also got the turkey sandwich, and honestly, I wish I had taken a photo. It looked sad, thrown together, and yep--no side with that either. For the price they charge, this place should be delivering way more in quality and flavor. Bottom line: Skip it. They were not busy when we arrived, so getting a table was easy. The place has several TVs inside. It is a good hangout place to watch sports with friends. I ordered the Smoked tri-tip sandwich with coleslaw. I was bummed that the tri-tip tasted dry and reheated; it didn't taste fresh at all. It also needed more smokiness flavor and some seasoning. As soon as you enter you feel like your transported away from a busy Metropolitan area to a mountain cabin in the country. I ordered a cold IPA and the BBQ chicken Ceasar salad. The photo on the menu shows the chickn cut on top, but it was actually served as cut strips on the side, which actually turned out to be better for my personal preference. The ceaser salad is pretty straightforward, lettuce, croutons, and cheese.. but the chicken was very tender juicy and delicious. it seemed to be tossed in sauce after it was grilled so I was able to enjoy the delicious sauce on every bite. There wasn't a rush by anyone. Which is fine. We had a ton of time before the game. Took a look at the menu and took a look at some of the food next to us and it didn't look appetizing at all. The fries looked sad and the meats looked dried / it didn't have a ton of sauce on it. I'd probably never eat here. But I'm sure they could do some pretty decent appetizers. Gaslamp BBQ was a regular stop at the downtown food tasting festivals (e.g. Taste of Gaslamp) that occurred prior to the pandemic. I paid a visit to redeem one of their coupons and to pick up some grub to-go. A bartender took my order of a BBQ Smoked Tri-Tip plate which came with a choice of a side dish. The roasted vegetables were my pick. About 15 minutes later, a bag was handed to me by a kitchen staff member. When I got home to eat, I opened up a take-out container which had the meat slathered with barbecue sauce on it. Unfortunately, the tri-tip pieces were dry. If it wasn't for the sauce, then the flavor was missing too. I certainly didn't detect much smokiness. The veggies were not much better. Perhaps the pulled pork was what I should have chosen because they usually serve up a sample of that during the festivals which have been pretty good. I would advise going to other BBQ establishments in town if you want better quality barbecued tri-tip at a good price. read more
