Got a paloma and the flavor was more intense than I expected, but it was pretty good. Tater tots are nice and crispy, great texture. Aside from that, they're generic normal tasting tater tots. For the burger, I liked the bun and other ingredients, but thought the savoriness of the meat was just okay. Also, can't say I'm a huge fan of the tiny lettuce whenever I see it. Overall, this joint is not bad, but I can think of very little about it that stands out. I don't feel that it fully leans into being a sports bar or dive bar or even as a burger joint. I was visiting Coronado with my wife as she had a work conference, and I was on vacation. I was feeling like getting away from my hotel to find some local food, and I walked by Nicky Rottens and thought a burger sounded right up my alley for lunch that day. The menu consists of appetizers, entree salads, big plates, char-grilled burgers, a lil champs menu, cocktails, draft beer, wine, and cans and bottles. I kept it simple as I ordered a char-grilled burger called the All-American Classic, consisting of two prime patties, seasoned with Nicky's steakhouse rub and grilled. It came with Patriotic cheese, lettuce, chopped onion, tomato, pickle, and special sauce along with a side of French fries. The special sauce was similar to a thousand island dressing, and I had that on the side. The burger was very filling and delicious along with French fries that I couldn't stop eating (until I ran out). Yum!! The staff were very friendly and helpful during my time there. I learned that Nicky Rottens considers itself to be "Coronado's Original Spot for Great Food, Good Times, and Local Flavor." It is a family-owned bar and grill right on Orange Avenue with tasty food, reasonable prices, and great service. They also consider themselves to be a "community hub grounded in American values, hard work, and a love for good food and even better company." While I went to Nicky Rottens on my own, I could see the sense of community there and certainly got some good food and service. They are open daily at 11 AM closing Sunday through Thursday at 9:30 PM and Friday and Saturday at 10 PM. I didn't notice until after I left that they even have a dog-friendly outdoor patio. Great spot to grab a couple drinks with friends and have a nice view of the city. I ordered the Bad A** Chicken Sandwich with sweet potatoes fries. The sandwich was delicious. The serving size was huge. I ordered a margarita and that was also good. The first one was a lot better than the second. The second was a little more on the margarita mix side. After being given attitude and simply just a lack of customer service an respect for deciding to patronize this establishment we had already waited for 20 minutes to order then, we were not asked for something to drink for an additional 15min, no water, no soda, no beer or cocktail request. The food when it did come was absolutely fantastic. Honestly though the food is great it is not worth the staff and service you get from this establishment. Our visit to Nicky Rottens was a huge bummer. I ordered the nachos because they looked so good on here and the reviews were awesome. When they came out it looked nothing like the pictures. The steak was really undercooked and looked like it had been sitting out a while. It was in big slices too so I had to ask for a plate so I could cut it up. I asked them to cook the steak more and they did. There was no sour cream or guacamole on the nachos. When I asked for it on the side they said they don't even have sour cream. The queso and salsa that it came with left the chips really soggy and watery. They were not good at all. My husband ordered a cob salad and added chicken for $8. When it came out it was almost half the size of what they used to serve. It was a $30 salad after adding the chicken. When we asked why all the food was different, they said they changed the menu 3 weeks ago to cut down on food waste. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because my daughter liked her chicken tenders and the service was fine. Our dinner ended up costing over $100 after tip. We didn't even get any drinks besides water or desserts. Such a waste of money. I would not go back here again. read more

I came to Nicky Rottens and ordered the Mai Tai along with the smash burger and tater tots -- and wow, everything was on point! The smash burger was sooo freakin' good -- super juicy with perfectly melted cheese. The tater tots were crispy and cooked to perfection. And the Mai Tai? Perfectly balanced, just the right amount of alcohol, a little sweet, and honestly one of my favorites I've had. I loved everything. Definitely a 10/10 experience! We've been coming here for a couple of years and it's always been a great place for a quick "hey let's grab a bite on the island!" Just went there & not sure it's going to stay that way for much longer. Learned they have new owners (again) and have made some significant changes, some much needed & some not so beneficial. Ambiance: 5 stars, still nice and chill Service: 3 stars still solid, used to be stellar, but they at least try. I hate having to flag down the servers so that docked a star. Food: 2 stars. Dude, ease up on the salt! We had nachos and it was so salty. Used to love it, but it def tastes different now. They pared down their menu-smart move for keeping food costs down. It was huuuuge before. Sad that they got rid of fried zucchini, but not the biggest loss. Portions like salad & nachos definitely are smaller-again smart to reduce food waste. Just a bit bummed that between 3 of us we would get a salad, nachos & appetizer combo and split it so we had a variety of goodness. This time it forced us to get burgers (not the one I used to sometimes order since they don't have it anymore), again salt shaker patty when flavor can come from elsewhere even better. Came in for the first time. Wasn't too busy and we did enjoy the food. Our waitress was friendly and the portions were pretty large. Price was on the high side but expected considering the area. Unfortunately my CC was not returned to me, and I left shorty after. When I realized it was not returned I called them and they said yes they have it. Great I thought. Advised I would be in the next morning to pick it up. Now the bad part. They lost my card! Waited as they searched for it but no luck. I've been here twice now. I started with a mocktail and hubby got a beer. I ordered the famous rotten burger and hubby opted for the jalapeño burger. Their burgers are huge and loaded! It comes with fries, so I upgraded to the garlic fries and it was great. I love their carne asada fries too! They are nicely seasoned and they don't skimp on the meat. The onion rings were so crispy! The first time I sat outside, so service was a bit slow and we weren't checked up on enough. I wanted dessert, but didn't want to wait 30 minutes for it. The second time I went here, we sat inside and service was more attentive. We ordered mocktails and mine was so refreshing. The cheese sticks were piping hot too. I wanted to try their grilled hot pastrami sandwich this time and it was very flavorful. I forgot to add garlic to my fries, so these were okay lol. My friend got a mushroom burger and a side of onion rings. For dessert, we shared the cookie bomb, which was pretty good, but had too much whipped cream for me. An incredibly good chicken sandwich that is a feat to finish... The portion was absolutely massive. I had the Bad Ass Chicken Sandwich and the Smash Hit cocktail. The chicken smothered in their sauce, but stayed crispy the whole time. The breading was great, a lot of time I feel like places overdo it and it tastes way too breaded, but not here. The healthy heaping of coleslaw was fresh and plussed it up by adding a cold contrast to the rest of the sandwich. The vibe at Nicky Rottens is similar to Buffalo Wild Wings, but much better. Lots of TV's, louder atmosphere, huge menu. The food and drinks are obviously much better. The service was very quick and friendly. Our server got our order in right away and we didn't have the wait very long, even on a night that it was packed and March Madness games were on. Went for lunch on a weekday, found excellent parking, plenty of choice tables available. The waitress was Johnny on the Spot during our entire visit even it's an Olympic Gold Medal match on that she was clearly interested in, real "duty first" service. Everything came out hot and fresh. None of us were prepared for for portions being so massive. The leftovers could have been a complete second meal if we knew it would have survived the afternoon in the shipyard spoiling in the car. Honestly speaking I think they may have overhyped it, every single food item that we ate was seriously lacking seasoning. A little salt and pepper would've went a long way. Sliders: We returned this plate bcuz it tasted like nothing Nachos: They were good, it has a cafeteria nacho vibe going on. It did need some acidity to cut through and seasoning to the chili as well. Wings: These were cooked really well, nice and crispy and juicey. The Thai Chili wings were the best thing we ate there. We described it as a sports bar you would wear a polo to rather than a jersey or tank top. Service started out incredibly fast with drinks and apps within a few minutes, then really started to slow down around entree time. Apps were great! Definitely get the onion rings! Burgers were pretty good but not incredible. Portions were massive and the prices were reasonable considering we were near the water in Coronado. First visit. Arrived before 11am to have a couple of beers with lunch. Sitting at the bar in comfy velveteen chairs, the bartenders took great care of us suggesting draft beers according to our tastes. The place was low key for awhile then the place started to fill up to watch Rugby on the big screen, the energy in the place turned up. Definitely a place to watch sports with all the TV screens. I had the steak sandwich served in a torte bun which had roasted peppers and melted cheese with their special sauce. Was really tasty aside from the chewy pieces.
