Disturbing lack of ADA and psychiatric service animal awareness. I had an upsetting and humiliating experience here involving my psychiatric service animal. When I entered the restaurant around 7:00 PM, I was stopped and questioned extensively by security regarding my service animal. Rather than being asked the limited ADA-compliant questions permitted by law, the interaction became prolonged and uncomfortable while staff repeatedly attempted to determine whether my dog was a "real" service animal or simply an emotional support animal. I remained waiting at the entrance while this was repeatedly discussed back and forth. What made the situation especially humiliating was that another patron openly laughed at me during the interaction while walking outside for a cigarette. I later realized this same patron had her own dog inside the establishment in a stroller the entire time. Staff members appeared very familiar and comfortable with her, and multiple employees, including my waitress- referred to her as a "regular." Although her dog was eventually moved to the patio area, the contrast in how the situations were handled made me feel singled out, embarrassed, and unfairly scrutinized. I later spoke with management in hopes of resolving the matter respectfully. During that conversation, I was surprised and concerned to hear that neither management nor staff were familiar with psychiatric service animals or their protections under the ADA. Psychiatric service animals are legally recognized service animals when trained to perform disability-related tasks, and this lack of awareness was deeply concerning, especially in a city like San Diego with a large disabled and veteran community. I fully understand that businesses are allowed to ask limited ADA-compliant questions regarding service animals, and I also understand that many establishments have dealt with individuals falsely claiming pets as service animals. However, there is a significant difference between appropriately verifying a service animal and making a disabled customer feel publicly interrogated and humiliated. The overall handling of this interaction lacked professionalism, sensitivity, and basic understanding of ADA service animal protections. No customer should feel mocked, scrutinized, or publicly embarrassed simply for entering a restaurant with a legitimate service animal. I sincerely hope this situation can serve as an opportunity for additional ADA education and proper service animal training for staff moving forward so that other disabled guests do not experience similar treatment. I would appreciate being informed of any steps the restaurant intends to take regarding ADA compliance and staff training before I determine how I would like to proceed further. Really disappointed with our experience at Bub's at the Ballpark on Friday night around 11 PM. One of our friends is 24 years old and had his valid ID taken and held by staff for an extended period of time while they questioned it in front of everyone. The situation was handled in a very rude and embarrassing way. What made it worse was that staff did not appear to have proper equipment to verify IDs. There was no scanner or black light, only a flashlight, yet they still acted aggressively and unprofessionally toward our group. We completely understand checking IDs and keeping things safe, but there's a respectful and professional way to handle situations like this. For how busy it was on Saturday, the busiest day of Comic Con, service was still really good! Our server was really attentive and came in to check on us periodically. I think my issue was the food, specially the wings. Tbh, I'm not sure I'm a fan of the bbq/grilled style wings. Unlike regular deep fried wings that come out crunchy, the skin of the wings felt rubbery. While the sauces were good (we got mango habanero and Korean bbq), the texture threw me off. Dear diary Came here before the padres game and it was packed. It was loud and lively with multiple tv showing different games. We were let in to roam and find our own seats - luckily we found some but you can also do reservations for tables (which I recommend) I wanted to try the caulifornia wings and let me tell you it was goooood. It was crispy with a softness inside. The honey mustard grilled wings were a tad bit disappointing. The flavor wasn't up to par for me. As you know it's downtown, so if you want a parking come prepared to fight for a parking spot or park somewhere else and take the trolley. read more

This is an absolute must-stop whenever I'm downtown! I love their tater tots they're crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and perfectly salted. The boneless chicken wings are crusted just right and are meaty with every bite. We tried the buffalo, mango habanero, sweet chili, and Korean BBQ sauces. My top two were the mango habanero, which had the perfect balance of heat and sweetness, and the classic buffalo. Definitely a spot I'll be coming back to for game days! Bub's is an experience. Located behind PetCo Park, it has one of my favorite chicken wing flavors, the Archie. The wings themselves are delicious and cooked perfectly with a crunchy outside. We tried some other happy hour offerings and they were fantastic as well. The shotgun shells were pretty good. Usually I can only eat one, but I was able to smash 3 of these. The queso was also very good and worth it, but the wings are king. The service is solid and the ambiance during a Padres game in electric. As you can see from my multiple check ins of this restaurant... I absolutely love dining here! Stumbled here on a random Wednesday night to discover an amazing special, wing Wednesdays! I'm not sure if it's buy 5 get 5 free or half off wings, but they're pretty much the same thing. This establishment does fine on its own, but I'm not a gatekeeper so come in and support on Wednesdays! In my opinion, these are some of the best wings in San Diego and the fact that they are grilled makes them even more special. What a way to stand out from traditionally fried wings! They also have a special where if you buy a draft beer, you can add a shot of liquor for only $5 and that isn't a happy hour deal, it's an all day deal. Service was great, it's open seating but I love sitting at the bar to be right in front of the televisions and the servers are more attentive. Didn't catch the servers name tonight (wish I did so I can give her a shoutout) but she was newish and did a great job. Food is adequate. There are really limited options for vegetarians. Basically tots, grilled cheese, or kale salad. The ambience is very sports bar style. We had a large party and they refused to seat us together even though there were very few other patrons in the place. They joined some tables but said they could not join others because they could not block one of the pathways even though there was another clear pathway available. When it came to the bill, we were willing to pay as one check but asked if we could have each person's share on an itemized receipt since we were expensing it individually to our employer. Instead, the server came back and gave us a single copy of our receipt without anyone's alcoholic drinks. One positive was the portion sizes were huge so we all had leftovers. However the food was not great so I didn't even eat my leftovers. Overall, I would rate this place as mediocre and would probably not come back. read more

I rarely publish reviews when I believe a restaurant is subpar, but I felt the need to with this one. I came here on a Friday night with some friends, and the service was absolutely terrible. The waitress came over and took our order, and not once did she refill our water, ask us if we need anything else, or make sure the food was satisfactory. When the bill came around, another waitress that was checking us out had an extreme attitude, not smiling, not acknowledging our thank yous, and when asked for a to go, didn't say anything and dropped it off without saying a word. I apologize you probably hate your life but don't project that onto us. Other than that the food was 6/10, hence the two star. But seriously, the two waitresses NEED TO DO BETTER. read more

We came in about 2:30 PM on a Friday afternoon and it was not many people. Cool with me because I was hungry and we got served within 5 minutes. We had the Turkey burger with salad and some lemon pepper and buffalo wings. The wings had a Smokey taste and they were delicious. The turkey burger was cooked well and the salad was good. The service was good and all was well. It's a block from the baseball field (SD) and in Gaslamp, with all of the restaurants around. I loved how they had many TVs throughout the restaurant- I love watching sports. We will return. read more

Wanted to watch the Ducks game and have been eager to explore the different bars in downtown so I headed here because I have heard nothing but good things. It was a decent sized crowd but still plenty of empty tables and seats at the bar. Grabbed a seat in front of one of the televisions and was shortly greeted by one of the bartenders (I think her name was Dena? and she was amazingly friendly and attentive). The menu was plentiful, including seafood options (yay for pescatarians). I asked Dena whether she recommended the fish tacos or the fish and chips and though she said both were great, I opted for the tacos and y'all they were so good (and I was so hungry) that I inhaled the plate before snagging a picture The plate is generously portioned with two hefty sized tacos (I got them fried and recommend) and lots of chips with delicious salsa. The space is great. Colorful, vibrant, with about the usual bar vibe and cleanliness. Bathroom was clean and the bar was consistently wiped down and maintained. I was surprised to see how much the prices increased just for wings. $21 for 10 wings is pretty steep compared to other wing spots I've been to in San Diego. I got 5 sweet habenero wings and 5 classic BBQ. The Habenero had a kick to it but wasn't unbearable. We've been coming here for years. It's a great routine when we're headed down to Petco to watch the Padres give us false hope for a championship season. Bubs does NOT disappoint when it comes to great comfort food with awesome drinks and a huge variety of beers on tap. I try to make a point of trying something new each time and they're never stingy about giving some free samples to make sure you're not committed to 22+ ounces of something you don't love. Let's talk about Tots. Truly one of the best food inventions ever. They take it to a new level though with a dozen different options. Some of them are so over the top you're like, "Hey, are there any tots in there because you threw in the whole kitchen sink with toppings" but I say that with peace and love because it's definitely a good thing. Just like when you get nachos and there's no cheese left by the time you get to the last 1/3 of chips. This is NOT the case here. You'll have great proportions of toppings to tots ratios here. I love the Philly steak and the BBQ chicken salad. I will often coerce my wife to get one of them so I can venture out to try something new but still have a chance to rely on old faithful for one of my faves. The vibe here is great even when it's not game day but get there at least 2 hours before the game starts if you have any interest in finding a table. First time experience at Bub's and will definitely be the last. My daughter and I stopped by for a bite to eat 2 hours before going to Padre game. She's always wanted to try it and now that's she's 21 we did. I am in my late 50's. I just so happened to leave my DL in our car which was parked very far away. The guy at the entrance refused to let me in without an ID. Clearly, I am well over the age of 21!! He obviously has an inflated authority complex as he would not allow me to accompany my daughter into the restaurant after checking her ID. Give me a F'ing break! Luckily, my savvy daughter was able to retrieve my law enforcement creds off my phone! The jerk at the entrance then made me prove my DOB via the settings on my iPhone where this info is stored. So ridiculous!!!! There were children sitting on the patio...how did they get in without an ID?! To top it off, the food was mediocre at best. The icing on the cake was when I exited the restaurant with my plastic cup of water, I was berated at the other exit as Bub's employees told me I couldn't leave the premises with a cup of water! Seriously unbelievable!! I'm sure Bubs could care less about negative reviews, but we attend lots of Padres games as do our friends and we'll be sure to stay clear of this establishment!!
