It's super cool, hip and organic all at the same time. Barleymash is a 4.5 star rounded up for good behavior, and it's become one of my new favorite spots in the Gaslamp. Great energy, vibe, and food. The menu drove me absolutely mad...I couldn't possibly order everything...and everything sounded great (so, I tried). Lots of great choices from burgers to mac'n cheese to salads to "iron" fries (with cheese and various good meats, it's a must) to flatbread pizza to fish & chips to fancy chicken/fish/beef. Whew. I debated the menu over an Old Fashioned ($11, and so good, I had two). Back and forth I weighed the options, and I believe I mostly won. 1. Health Nut Salad ($14) with Chicken ($4) -- pricey, but a beautiful salad with delicious dressing (5.0 stars). 2. Short Ribs ($25) with Lobster (add $10) -- perfect combo, albeit rich, totally amazing with pics to prove it (5.0 stars). 3. Tuna Poke ($15) -- built like a stack, the tuna was cut too large with too few chips to be enjoyable (3.0 stars). Darlene is an absolute doll of a server: funny, engaging, and attentive. Get the lobster mac and cheese, the best thing I've eaten in a while! It's very rich though, super cheesy, and is a pretty large serving. They don't skimp on the lobster either; big chunks, a couple claws, totally worth every penny. Also, the surf and turf burger is delish, never had a burger with cream cheese, but it's a pretty great topping. Only had room for those 2 items this trip, so next time definitely want to try their loaded fries. I am in love with this place! It's got such a cool, industrial, modern decor with interesting looking fans. My fiancee says they are used to mash barley. I have no idea if that is true but anyway. We came here to try the famous Iron Fries and to admire their huge salads (we didn't get them this time but we'll definitely return to try those)! Here's what we got: 1) All In Iron Fries - The short rib and pulled pork inside is amazing! The best part was the crispy pork belly on top and the pepper jack beer cheese sauce. Wow!! I was so happy with this and want to come back to try the other options, like Hell Fire and San Diego Iron Fries. 2) Cilantro Pesto Barley Pie - This was not as impressive. It was not a pot pie like I was expecting but it was more of a flatbread. The texture was a bit thick/bready but the flavor on the pie was spicy, sweet and tangy at the same time. The pesto didn't stand out too much but the pepper jack and pickled onions definitely got my attention. It wasn't bad but I would not get a barley pie again. I would stick to the super unhealthy but worthy fries! Brunch menus instead of lunch must be an SD thing. Online it says Brunch is served on weekends from 10-2pm and Lunch is served weekdays from 10-2pm. When we visited, they switched to the lunch menu at 1pm, which I was so grateful for, because I got to try the fries and pies with their lunch menu. I came in here with two of my close girlfriends to celebrate her upcoming wedding day. We sat at the bar and there were two bartenders, a girl and guy. The girls name was Alex and after a couple minutes she gave us a drink menu and said she would help us. We looked at the drink menu and were ready to order and after a couple minutes of hardened eye contact she finally realized we were ready and took our order. I ordered a beer and OJ for my friend and it came out to $10. I paid with my card and signed the bill and did not include a tip on the card. After I handed her my bill with no tip, she said in the most sarcastic rude tone with an eye roll, "Oh $10, are you sure, wow thank you so much". I was utterly shocked. NOT EVERYBODY PAYS THE TIP ON THE DAMN CARD. I was going to tip cash, but after this remark there was now way i was going to tip. From then on my night was ruined she did not look at us AT ALL or assist us at all anymore beyond that point. Then finally she came over and sarcastically bichy said "oh PLEASE if you need anything at all please let me know" What did i do to deserve this kind of treatment? I was utterly disgusted and left the establismnent. I came here on the 14th of May but felt like taking my time to write a review. Due to all of the great reviews, my husband and I decided to come here for lunch/dinner, linner? happy hour? Not sure what to call it but we were told it was a 30 to 40 minute wait so we put our names in and went to stand at the bar because there were no seats. By the time we got a seat at the bar, it was already 45 minutes and we still haven't been called to be seated. Yet, there's these open tables and we're not being seated. They said they'll call us and text us once our spot opens up, that text never came. We finally decided to order at the bar. I got the pretzels and we shared the brussel sprouts mac and cheese. It was something my husband wanted but I ended up liking it too. However, our food took forever to get, another hour or so, actually. Meanwhile, still no text on when our table will be ready, actually, that text and phone call never came. We never got seated at a table. Our food arrived and it was really good, but was it worth an hour wait? No, not really. Ambiance is nice and all, bartenders and waitresses are dressed like they're at Hooters, because that's all you see. I'm sorry Miss, I'm having a hard time looking at your eyes when I order my food because wow....your ummm, chest is really staring at me! LOL and I'm a straight girl too! My new fav go-to place when in Gaslamp/San Diego: B A R L E Y MASH! After a wonderful family dinner at Island Prime (another recommendation from me)- we found ourselves ready to party and dance off our Thanksgiving meal(s). The group consensus was a place that had good music, decent drink prices, dance floor and TVs for the basketball games oh & located in Gaslamp. With all that said, we found ourselves in Barley Mash. It was easy to get in with no specific dress code required. After getting checked by security, we were seated in one of the booths towards the back wall, which had a good view of the restaurant and everyone in it- plus we had a TV in the perfect location from our table for the guys in our party. Our server was pretty attentive and made sure our glasses stayed refilled. I really enjoyed the vibe as the night went on and the DJ came on. They dimmed the lights and really turned up the bass so the music sounded awesome. I like how 3/4 of the walls are Windows so that you can see outside towards the downtown fun. But the real plus about this place if the overall space and vibe! The crowd is a good mix of locals, mature folk and down right classy ratchets. I will be stopping in the next time I find myself in downtown Gaslamp in SD, I had so much fun the last time I visited here! Decided to give this place a go because of the reviews. Also the girl at the front desk recommended we go here because of the food. So we decided to head over there for dinner and drinks. Once we got there the place was extremely busy and the wait time was about 25-30 mins for a table. We decided to sit in the bar area and just eat, drink and enjoy the night. The atmosphere is chaotic, loud and kind of tight and packed in there. The service was okay and we felt our waitress wasn't bad but she just wasn't personable. She was very "matter of fact" and busy. There was really no connection. We had more of a connection with the guy who came to bring us water and clear out tables. He was very cool and funny. Anyways, now for the food. BACON BLEU CHEESE - Hickory smoked bacon, natural bleu cheese crumbles, green onions, tomatoes, pickled onions and basil-bleu cheese sauce. These were amazing and they were huge! They could of fed a table of four easily. The bacon and blue cheese were the perfect combo and they need to have these everywhere! Barley Pie - CILANTRO PESTO - garlic oil & lager marinated chicken, pepper jack, pickled onions, roasted corn. To me this meal was terrible.. There wasn't any flavor at all. All I tasted was bread and some liquid. That was probably the worst flatbread I've ever had. DRINKS - The Mule and a vodka and soda. I didn't taste hers but I had two Moscow Mules and they were ok. Good stuff. Trendy spot. Lots of choices. Cool atmosphere. Patio seating. Late night dinner on the patio and the weather was perfect so no matter what we had, it would have been awesome. He chose a burger and it was cooked just the way he likes it and loaded on the side with plenty of fries that were fried up just right and seasoned just right. No complaints on that side of the table. I looked over the menu and as much as I probably would have had a hard time deciding... my eyes focused on a macaroni and cheese section. I know, I know, who orders mac n cheese when you are out to eat, right? And, no, I'm not 6 years old. But this was lobster mac and cheese and it turned out to be probably the best macaroni and cheese I've ever had, even without the lobster in it!!! Holy macaroni, hell yes!!! There was a ton of it and it was sticky and a bit crunchy and chewy. I barely made a dent in it!! I wish we would have been going straight back to the hotel room because I would have taken that beast home to snack on all night! I first came here a year or two ago because I heard the blue cheese fries were amazing. Fast track to today--they now have multiple french fry options (like you wish you could eat them all). Decided to go with the "All In" with short ribs, pepper jack cheese, bell peppers, the chicken cilantro pesto flatbread and the black and blue burger, and some beers. They have a great tap list! And they have special food and cocktails for comic-con. Surprisingly not that bad of a wait for two of us to get a table outside. Our beers and fries came out first, and the fries were super seasoned and flavorful, and the short ribs were tender. Every bite was AMAZING. Since it was slightly busy, we kinda sorta killed the fries before our entrees came, and ended up being uber full by the time the burger and flatbread came out. I ate one small slice of my flat bread, and it was everything I was craving at the time (it came with pickled onions!!! sweet corn and chicken) and the crust was perfection. Alas, the burger is currently sitting in our fridge until we get hungry later. So, the food never disappoints, there is literally a drink for anyone and everyone. Limited menu but worth trying! I tried the ahi tuna taco and it was good, the green sauce gave it a spicy kick! I have been wanting to try this place for a long time. We finally got a table outside on the way to Billy Joel and it was a Saturday night! Apparently we timed it perfectly because if I had a dollar for every person who walked in and then left... I ordered the Chicken Strips appetizer but it was a full meal. It was served with homemade chips, my favorite thing going right now. The plate came with 5 big, crispy strips. I ate 3 and gave 2 to my husband. We ended up here by chance. Restaurants in the Gaslamp District don't usually take reservations. We were eyeing La Puerta but it was going to be an hour and a half wait. Barleymash was close by and we put our names in and were sat within 20 mins. Barleymash had a large area for sips and nibbles. Tv monitors all over, another bar at the lower level and an amazing DJ just playing music that rocked!! We were also well treated by the host. We had no complaints about our cocktails. We ordered food and were very pleased. The menu offered a variety of dishes. These plates were good-sized! Barleymash turns into a club after 10pm. We didn't stay for it though but if their music was as good as it was at dinner time, that would have been a fun place to hang at. We are going back for sure to validate consistency. I am so glad I was finally able to try this place out. The drink and food options are amazing and definitely a great place to check out. We started off with an amazing bottle of the Zinfandel from the prisoner wine company. For my entree, I ordered the Maine event which was Mac and Cheese with lobster. One of the best Mac and Cheeses I've had. It was extremely cheesy with a good amount of lobster. I also split a burger and it was just as good with the buttery buns and crispy fries. We were stuffed from the entrees but after hearing what they had for dessert we couldn't resist. It was a warm cookie and brownie with their home made vanilla ice cream. There's the typical bar and dance floor set up but plenty of perimeter places to stand or sit and just converse and have some drinks. The music is loud, which makes conversing tough, but it's a club! There were tons of people of all sorts and the prices for drinks weren't outlandish by SD standards at all, we had a great time and I'd definitely come back. It's more dry and crumbly. The toppings were pretty good though. Generous amount of chicken. The corn added sweetness and the pickled onions were the highlight of the fish. The short rib Mac was good for the first four bites. Then it gets extremely heavy where I don't want to continue eating it. And let's be honest - when in San Diego with the best micro brewery selections on tap - who needs Belgians? We shared the Veggin Out Iron Fries (home cut fries topped with roasted farmhouse veggies and pepper jack-beer cheese sauce), Gaslamp Flatbread (flatbread topped with whiskey-caramelized onions, three cheese blend and garlic cream) and the BarleyMac Maine Event (cavatappi noodles topped with tequila and butter poached Maine lobster meat, white truffle and parmesan). They were ALL delicious!!! We definitely need to come back to try more!!! In addition to awesome food, the atmosphere was relaxed and fun. And the service was friendly and attentive. This used to be a go to spot for me and I always recommended them, but I won't be back after tonight. Service was not anything like it used to be and food was basic at best. The new staff isn't the best. Not a good vibe. Go elsewhere...it's over priced with food that doesn't live up to what it used to and staff that really could careless you're there.
