Stopped by the old hangout on a recent visit to my home town. Ordered the 14 inch pizza, chef salad and breadsticks with cheese. The salad was really good with lots of fixings for $7.50. The 4 of us didn't even finish it. The pizza was as we remembered. Cornmeal crust with spicy pepperoni and sausage chunks. The decor is the same from 30 years ago. I'd recommend getting there expecting to wait in line - it goes by fast and gives you a chance to review the menu. The starters or appetizers were average but the pizza definitely made up for that. A hometown favorite with incredible, unique pizza! Drinks are reasonable and the environment is cozy for family. Barnaby's has always supported youth sports in the community and employers. This would be a 5** review if only they would turn down the volume on the obnoxious microphone. The cook calling order numbers today was especially in love with himself. This is for anyone traveling through, I cannot speak for locals. To summarize, I am a pizza lover and can enjoy the most basic of pizzas, the only pizza I won't eat is cici's until now. I would suggest purchasing a personal sized microwave pizza from a gas station and heating up at your hotel over this. Full details below, if you do go here, I wish you a much better experience than we had. Ambiance: quite dark, nostalgic, midwest feel, family friendly, hard wooden benches for seating. Ordering: Walk-up order for food on right and then drinks on left-you'll pay separately at each station and they do take credit cards. They'll call your number when food is ready for you to pick up. Rationed amounts of Parmesan cheese in small cups, none on tables. Price was appropriate for what we ordered, breadsticks, large pizza and 2 drinks for around $22. Service was helpful, not overly friendly. Food: Breadsticks with cheese is not what I would expect from a pizza place. Here it is fried bread with nacho cheese dip. Pizza-basic flavors of cheese, pepperoni, minimal sauce, crust is thin and hard and crunches like it's stale, although I'm not sure how that happens. Ordered a large-could feed 3-4 depending on how much you eat. Ours was half extra cheese, half pepperoni-only found 2 pieces without pepperoni. Women's bathroom: old-although being remodeled, not too dirty, not too clean, water is hot, no drain cover so don't drop a ring and paper towels are auto-although it's hard to tell unless you're 2' tall and can see the sign on the underside of it. I've been coming here since I could walk. It's the only pizza my daughter will eat. So when we get off the highway and hit South Bend we make the call and order the pizza's. Their Pub burgers and absolutely delicious- I think I had them every other day when I was pregnant 20+ years ago and they are still delicious. Cheesy garlic bread mmmm!! Sometimes they'll have an off day with the pizza, but it's never been inedible just not perfect. Still gets all finished!! Kinda dark in there and you serve yourself. We are carry out. Good pizza and even better breadsticks. The crust on the pizza was so crunchy and thick, while the cheese and other ingredients were plentiful and delicious. The breadsticks were out of this world, too! They were so warm and soft. The service was quick too! I was with a large group of 10, and we had a big order of 3 large pizzas and 2 orders of breadsticks. We only had to wait around 30 minutes, at most, for our food. The restaurant is very unique with its traditional (and a little dated) environment. On the down side though, the lighting is very dark, and it is so loud. It was hard to hold conversations with my friends when the cooks would yell the order numbers over the microphone. All and all, I left satisfied and happy! A South Bend staple and first place I dined when moving to the area in 2002. Of the two longstanding Barnaby's in the area, this one is simply better. Good salads, great garlic cheese bread/sauce, and consistently tasty pizza. Always on their game from the friendly ladies who take your order, the people serving drinks at the drink bar, and the guys who are always on the spot cleaning tables. Hard working crew. I've been to Barnaby's too many times to count over the years. As far as the pizza goes, I was debating between three and four stars, but the nostalgia gets me so it's four stars. Many locals will tell you there is a difference between the Soouth Bend and Mishawaka Barnaby's locations and they are right - SB is definitely better! I grew up in South Bend and vividly remember walking from St. Joe Grade School to Barnaby's and Howard Park Skating Rink on Friday afternoons. After a chilly evening of skating, the warm, dark environment of Barnaby's was the perfect place to consume too much pizza. The crust is a little unique and thicker than I typically like it. As kids, we always joked the crust tasted a little but like Pepperidge Farm Gold Fish. Barnaby's is dark - no matter what time of day it is. The open dining room is filled with dark wooden booths seating either two or four. No wait service here - you order at the counter and wait for your number to be called (food at one end and drinks at the other). You grab your own plates, silverware and napkins. If you order a salad, you'll get a plate of lettuce and can visit the small salad bar to finish it off. They have a few beers on tap (mugs or pitchers) and serve sodas by the glass or pitcher as well. On our most recent visit, the place was packed and we were told it would be close to an hour for our pizza. No worries - we ordered a couple plates of lettuce and some breadsticks for us and the kids. Salads were fine, nothing fancy and not many toppings to choose from, but that's ok...you don't come for the salad. The breadsticks were deep fried so it was like dipping an unsweetened donut in marinara sauce. Our pizza came out hot and fresh - half pepperoni and half cheese. They put a ton of cheese on the pizza, so much so that we had a had time telling which side had the pepperoni. They cut their pizza into squares so if you like crust, the corners are the best. They tend to go a little overboard on the cheese, but that isn't always a bad thing (might want to ask for light on the cheese though). They always give out a $2 off a large pizza coupon and will give you the discount with or without the coupon...not sure why they don't just lower their price. Came here for dinner on a Friday before game day. The set up is serve yourself: find your own table, order food at the counter, order drinks at a bar. Despite it being pretty crowded, we pretty easily found 3 tables to accommodate our group of 9. We ordered drinks for everyone at the bar, but they needed IDs AND bodies associated with the IDs before serving us. We all ended up having to walk up to the bar and order our own drink. We ordered 3 pizzas and it took well over an hour before our number was called. We were surprised by the wait time considering there were people who walked in after us that were served before us. To be fair, the kitchen was very busy with take out orders as well as restaurant orders. Though the service wasn't great, the pizza was very good. I would recommend Barnaby's for a group that doesn't have a time constraint. Be prepared to wait a on a Friday night. read more

Toppings missed several pieces...where you just see lightly sauced dough. TERRIBLY OVERPRICED. $125 total. For crappy pizzas. We called to order 7 pizzas at 6:45 pm. We were told 25-30 minutes. The person we sent to pick up the pizza at 7:15 let us know that the pizzas weren't done and appeared to not even be in the oven yet. At 7:36, the pizzas STILL were not done. I called. I was told "5 more minutes," after I could hear her discuss it with 2 other people in the background. She explained there was a large order ahead of us that took up the ovens. IF this was true...1) why weren't we told when we phoned in the order 50 minutes prior, and 2) why did other people walk in and place and receive their orders while our person waited???? Our person paid when he got there. I asked when I called if they could do anything for this inconvenience. I had to actually suggest just a coupon for a free pizza, and had to hold while they asked the manager if this was possible. Ridiculous. Our person text us at 7:49 saying they received the pizzas. This is over one hour from time of order, 35 minutes after he paid, and almost 15 minutes after I called. Solid Midwest pizza. Definitely more of a cold weather, winter place with all the hardwood and brick. I've gone for Valentine's Day and random Friday nights and both were good times. Barnabys is my go to place from pizza. And I prefer the Jefferson instead of Mishawaka location - even though they are both good as south bend uses a spicier type of sausage. My favorite. Special number 2 with spinach instead of green peppers. That means pepperoni, spicy sausage, mushrooms, onions and fresh spinach. The Parmesan cheese blend on the side with the red pepper flakes makes it even better. If you really want to indulge- get a half order of garlic cheese bread too. You will find this pizza place to be very busy most nights. But that's a good thing because it shows how much people love it. You have to order at the counter and get your own plates and silverware. They call your number when food is ready and then you go get it from the counter. We don't mind this at all, but thought it should be mentioned in the review in case you were wanting to be waited on. We love Barnaby's! It's a classic. It hasn't changed since the 70s. So it's definitely not a modern place. But it's very quaint. The pizza is amazing. They use the freshest ingredients. I have gone to Barnaby's many years ago in Illinois when I was very young. I remember the inside as I guess they are all alike. Very dark, but clean. The food was good. I wish we would have ordered pizza. I am not sure if that is what we had when I was a little kid. It looked good and seen so many order it. Many Grub Hub orders of pizza going out constantly. Will come back for the pizza next time in the area. If this place has been going since the 60's they must be doing something right. Prices are very reasonable on everything. This place was honestly not the greatest and I certainly would not recommend it. For starters, the service was horrible. It took about 35 minutes to get out pizza, which wasn't bad, but when we went to get our pizza from the counter the workers were snobby and rude. Past this, we order 2 salads and 2 appetizers, and after waiting for those for about 45 minutes, we finally went to the counter to ask where they were, only to be told that they hadn't even started making them and it would be another 15+ minutes until we got both salads and both appetizers. As for the food itself it was very mediocre to poor. The crust was dry and very thin making it seem like I was eating my pizza on a cracker, not pizza dough. We were extremely un happy with our experience, and ultimately just ended leaving frustrated, and still hungry. read more

Before I get into this, I feel it is only fair to give my disclaimer: I was born and raised in South Bend. As a kid, Barnaby's was our Friday night treat. I am completely and utterly biased. With that being said, this is one of my top 5 favorite pizzas of all time. Chicago has their deep dish, New York-its "slice", but South Bend? We have Barnaby's. I have memories of Friday night pizza parties as a kid. Now that I'm an adult, they are still putting out quality product. When friends or relatives that have moved away come home, Barnaby's is always on their list of stops. So the pizza is awesome, piled with veggies and meats (the italian sausage is served in huge flavorful chunks), tons of cheese, and then cut into squares (so you don't feel bad with you eat a bunch of them). I'm not sure what makes the crust so good. It's like the perfect mix of thin and thick crusts. Bottom line: get some! read more

Beer and Pizza - That is IT It is a bit of an odd place, you find a table then go up and order food on the right hand side pay for it, then work your way over t the bar and get your beer or soda. DO NOT, I repeat, do not bother getting wine! They have special 3 dollar off on large pizza nights - we got there on a Monday, and got the special. The pizza is large with good fresh ingredients, thick and crunchy crust, not a lot of sauce, but plenty of cheese and other goodies. If you like pizza this is the place. When I moved to Chicago I was shocked to find out that Barnaby's is actually a franchise! I thought it was a local, South Bend tradition. Oh well I still love it. I've tried several of the Chicago area locations and the one in Mishawaka, but for some reason the South Bend location has the best pizza. The owners of that location must have a magic touch. I was in south bend for the first time on business and wanted to try some pizza for dinner. This place had pretty good reviews on yelp, so I decided to give it a try. I have need been to a pizza place quite like this before. The other reviews prepared me for the mideval ambiance, but not the flow of the place. First you see a big counter and you go and fill out a paper ticket for your good one for any sides and another for the pizza. Then they call your number when your order is ready and you seat yourself. From what I could tell the only way to get any beverage was to go to the bar and order your beverage separately. Which, was a by perturbing since I'm on business and have to fill out ppw and submit all receipts for meals. They made up for the inconvenience by having hard cider at the bar in a fairly small establishment. The pizza was delish! I very much enjoyed eating it. The breadsticks I ordered looked like they were extra deep fried in the outside. They looked similar to a corn dog without a stick or a dog, but they tasted way better than they looked. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to bus my own table or not, but I saw a fellow cleaning off tables so I let him do it. I didn't realize that this place was a sort of chipotle style eatery only for pizza. I was expecting sit down tables. The method looks great for take out and I liked the pizza. It reminds me of a Shakey's Pizza in Speedway from that time, complete with dark wood, lighting, and pitchers of beer. The only thing missing is the piano player and five or six hippies. I first encountered Barnaby's when I lived in South Bend 25 years ago and I take my sons there after ballgames. If you are a child of the 60s & 70s you'll dig the atmosphere but the pizza is also great with a crunchy crust.
