Living in/around NYC I know good pizza. I mean hell, there's a good pizza place on every block. Barnaby's is good pizza. But not in the Italian fresh ingredients, well balanced pizza kind of way. Like the Pizza Hut all you can eat deep dish buffet kind of way. Make no mistake about it. This is the most American pizza you can get. If you like your crust too thick, with too much cheese, too much meat, and extra cholesterol, you've just found your place. This is the perfect 'drunk' pizza. This place is just fantastic for what it is... great pizza, cold drinks and a basic simple and well lived in atmosphere. The pizza is what you come for (and return for again and again), it's has a fantastic crust with good sauce and toppings. I think the pans which have raised bumps keeping any grease off of the crust itself really is a key point. The pizza isn't anything fancy but it's done really well. As others have noted the setting is something else, no windows, it's dark with a strong yellow color cast with old wooden booths. Clearly this place hasn't had any decoration or improvements made in a long, long time, and I wouldn't change a thing. You order at one register and then walk over and place a drink order at another place, with no real table service. It's definitely different but again the simple and quirky works here.. I also enjoy the fact that the staff while not rude don't seem to care much about me the customer, they are far to making pizza's and pouring drinks. It's also an interesting mix of customers, great people watching. I live in central Ohio now, and used to live in Chicago (so I'm a bit picky about my pizza) but when I'm back in town this place is on my short list to drop into and get a bite to eat. read more

I love pizza. Deep dish, Brooklyn brick oven, white pizza, gas oven, silician, granny slice, whatever, I love pizza. From New York, and a frequent visitor of Chicago, I can tell you, I know pizza. This place is so sneaky in a good and bad way. They make the slices into bagel bites size, so it's super easy to eat them. The problem? These convenient little suckers make you forget how much you can actually eat. Think of it this way: you'd surprise yourself how many munchkins you can eat in comparison to a donut or two. It is proportionally larger! One bite, two bite, three bite...BAM congrats, you're a fat ass. In terms of the food taste, we got the sausage and mushrooms pie. $17. Meh attitude of the pizza cashier rubbed me the wrong way, but hey, I'm here to meet my friend. The food was okay. The crust was hard, but needed to be so in order that you can eat the piece as a finger food. It wasn't memorable. I can tell you that for sure. I guess this place runs on more for its history and local favorite than anything remarkable. That or New York and Chicago have much more satisfying pizza. read more

Barnaby's is one of those places that you remember fondly from your childhood. You don't really remember the food, but you liked coming here, and it was mysterious in some way. At some point in your adult life, you return to your hometown, maybe with your girlfriend, and talk talk talk about this place. When you finally come here, you're kind of disappointed. It looks exactly the same, and the food's probably the same, but it's just kind of--sad. You realize all the people who used to work here don't anymore, simply because it's not that great a job. This kind of bursts your bubble, and you're slightly sad when you leave. I didn't grow up in South Bend and so have no idea whether this is accurate, but it's the distinct impression I get from Barnaby's. That's why I like it and feel sad about it so much. I don't know what they sprinkle on their pizzas besides the cornmeal on the crust, but it's addictive, and I'm now an addict. Barnaby's is the best pizza in South Bend. The crust is crunchy, the sausage is super-yummy, the ingredients are fresh, and the sauce is flavorful. I don't know why the one on Grape road isn't as good, but it's worth the few extra miles to go to the original. We were in town visiting and hadn't had Barnaby's in over a year. We quite nearly inhaled the pizza and then shamefully wished for another "hit." So good! read more

Ordered at 6:40. First text came at 7:20 saying they had to delay until 8:30. I get a call from delivery driver saying they have my order to the wrong driver. Next I get a text at 8:20 saying my order was canceled. Never again y'all. read more

Placed an order. It takes an hour and a half to arrive and half of it is missing. Driver states that's all they gave her. Pizza has to be reheated as it's barely warm. The Barnaby staff is completely clueless that their restaurant even uses GrubHub! When I arrived they, spent 15 minutes trying to figure out what I was talking about. "What's GrubHub?", they asked. They finally located my GrubHub order and took another 30 minutes to make it. Grand total, 45 minutes of my precious time lost to these incompetent idiots. They refused to offer me any form of compensation for this horrid experience. GrubHub was not any better when I related my unpleasant experience. They offered me a lousy $5 credit code towards my next order (no credit card credit) for a $25 order screw-up. Never again!!! read more

This place has been a family favorite for as long as I can remember. They have a unique crust that you won't find anywhere else, and it is delicious! Very good sauce. Great breadsticks! Great Pizza! This place looks sketchy from the out side--no windows, my family always jokes it's to keep this place a secret. This is pretty much THE hangout spot for the old and young. You will find students from Notre Dame (the savy ones anyway), families with children old and young, retired folk, you name it. The pizza is just that good because of the entire experience, you feel like you are in a tenebrist Caravaggio--think of a dimly lit musky medival tavern and you have Barnaby's. We love going to Barnaby's when we visit South Bend. Especially after a baseball game. It's a great place for family dining. The pizza is really good and the kids love the free refills on pop. You could feed a family of 4-6 for under$50. We like going to a Sunday afternoon ballgame and top it off with dinner at Barnaby's. It makes for a peaceful drive back to the Chicago area. read more

It's so dark in there man. The pizza was a 7/10 but the lights left a lot to be desired. I couldn't see anything the whole time. I felt like Stevie Wonder when I was in that place. Sometimes I tried to reach for my cup full of fruit punch and ended up grabbing some fries from my fry basket instead. That is really annoying because I need to drink something when I am thirsty not eat a food like fries that just make me more parched. It took me about 2 hours and 45 minutes to finish my meal because of the darkness. I would say this place is more of a $$$$ joint than a $$ joint. If you are going to drop a few bucks on a pizza here then you might as well go out and buy some nightvision goggles. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and gave the joint 4 stars. Maybe the lights were just not working that day. I understand that electricians are in hot demand these days so the problem is understandable. How disappointing! I am a long time Barnaby's customer in Illinois. I travel to South Bend a few times a year and was thrilled to find two Barnaby's locations. Last time I was here I tried the Grape rd. Location in Mishawaka. Yummmm yummm yummm! The crust was thin and crispy and the sauce and toppings were perfect. I read the reviews online and saw the high praise for this location and thought I needed to try it on this trip... What a disappointment! YUCK! The mushrooms were chopped into little pieces of nothingness. I could barely identify them. I asked for fresh garlic and got WHOLE CLOVES throughout the pizza! The biggest offense was the thick, doughy crust. What a shame! You forgot how to make Barnaby's pizza... Visit Mishawaka or Northbrook, IL for the right way to make a proper Barnaby's pizza.... Well, I decided to head over to the Mishawaka location and get a delicious Barnaby's pizza for the ride back to Chicago. The dogs will be eating SB Barnaby's pizza tonight. read more

Barnabys is my go to pizza spot in South Bend. If you are looking for wood oven pizza with interesting toppings or thick deep dish style pizza, barnabys isn't for you. What they do have is classic American toppings (sausage, peperoni,and veggies) and a crispy/chewy not too thick crust with an interesting biscuit/yeasty type flavor. The sausage is slightly spicy and they don't skimp on anything they put on their pizza. The service is different than what you would be used to in most pizza places, but their system really works. You order at the register, pay for your meal and then get a ticket for your food. Then you move over to a bar area and grab your sodas or beer. You are in charge of grabbing all your plates, silverware, and everything else for yourself. It's never a long wait even when they are packed and you dont have to worry about a server giving you bad service. If you get bad service, it's your own fault. The only thing I don't like about barnabys is their weak beer and wine selection. They have fat tire, Newcastle, macro brews, and some crappy house wine. Add a few regional craft brews and a decent bottle of red wine and this place would be perfect. read more

I was visiting SB and I was excited to see a Barnabys in town-the pizza of my youth in the northern suburbs of Chicago! Having recently visited the Nilesh Barnabys, I thought I'd compare this location to see if it was the same. It looked exactly the same. Dark, funky. Same bar and ordering system. The pizza, however, was not the same. The sauce is great- spot on. A bit sweet and a bit spicy. The crust, though...despite its massive cornmeal base, was not the thin, crispy crust of a real Barnabys. It had its own charm, to be sure, but no where close to the thin, non-yeasty crust a Barnabys pizza should have. Overall a superior pizza for most places, but not quite to Barnabys standards. Good pizza, and nicely priced. Crust is yeasty, sausage has lots of fennel. Not my favorite pizza in town but certainly second place. They have "sort of" remodeled the inside recently, although the tiny booths are still there.The salad bar has disappeared, which is ok because it was never that fresh to begin with. Here I am, traveling for work and I'm looking for a good thin crust pizza...and this is what I've found. I read the reviews and most of them are pretty good, and the pictures shows a good thin crust cut in squares. SO, I guess...I'll give it a try. SO, I order online for delivery and WHOA, the whole thing is over 30 bucks for a pizza and coke. This better be good. It shows up an hour later at the hotel and I'm excited to give it a try. FIrst off, it's not thin crust, and it's actually pretty spongy. This sucks...not what I expected. Second, I'm not seeing pepperoni on my pizza...I eat a few squares and I do come across a few...so it's there...oh well. All and all, it's not horrible, just not what I expected. Read some other reviews about disorganization before I made this post regarding Barnaby's. So I can see I am not reporting on an isolated incident. So Barnaby's is great pizza but a poorly run establishment. I bought two pizza for about $45 one night a few months ago. About $45 for a supreme and a pepperoni. Expensive but who cares. The order came with olives on the supreme which I didn't order. Larry the manager I called as it was a pick up on a Saturday night. He says come in and pick up on Tuesday or Wednesday to get new pizza (mind you, after he tried to tell me he would take $3 off my next order) I come in today to get what's owed to me and Larry isn't in. The back ups manager steps up and checks under the register amongst an assortment of scattered pieces of papers.(oh...so this is how serious Barnaby's takes complaints). Says she won't do anything without Larry's permission. Even claims Larry has his own separate set of scattered papers. And then tells me the owners are in and they would tell me they wouldn't act without Larry's consent. What a joke. Scattered papers. Separate lists. Owners that won't act on a upset customer. And overpriced pizza. Rather than making things right. You instead embarrass me. And have me waste my time. Should of known what I was up against when I first filed the complaint about Olives on a pizza and asking them to just remake the thing and Larry the pizza manager trying to tell me he would knock $3 dollars off my next order. Awful service. Ordered a pizza and two sandwiches. We were told the pizza would be an hour and we said that was fine. The pizza came out after about 45 minutes. An hour after the pizza was out the sandwiches were still not out. The person behind the bar was rude. The blonde taking the orders was rude. We heard one of the cooks say he "didn't give a f**k". There was not one good thing about it, I'll start off by saying the service was terrible they were soooo rude first of all the man that was calling the names was so rude and when my dad asked him about are food which we ordered like 30 to 40 min ago and we still did not get it and he said no salad after we ordered the. Grew up in South Bend and moved to Houston, TX for work. Every time I visit family in the 574, I have to stop at Barnaby's. Their pizza is always good, and their parmesan cheese herb blend is the best in the Bend! Their burgers are legit too. You have to fill out the order card and listen to your number, but that's no big deal. That's how they have been doing it even when I was a kid in the 90s. read more

This place is good for a nice doughy pie, which is not normally my favorite. But Barnaby's delivers a crisp crust and not too greasy pie. The cut it like a square, which I don't love but I can live with....living in NYC this would be sacreligious. Onto the strange but cool interior. There are no windows. You sit in old school booths. It is dark and the staff is very hands off and a little unfriendly...especially for the ultra nice service that is typical of Indiana. But at the end of the day it works, I have no idea why. We called and ordered two pizzas a little before 6:45, and we were told it would take 35 minutes. We get there at 7:35 (15 minutes after it should've been ready) and then were told we would have to wait a while more since we "just called." Ended up waiting until 8:15, about an hour after we were told it would be done. I don't know about y'all, but I don't have enough time in the day to sit around waiting inside a restaurant when I have a lot to get done in the night. This really threw a wrench in my night, and I'm disappointed I couldn't get good service :/. read more

This is my new favorite pizza place :) my husband and I have been doing "date nights" here for a year now. Never a bad experience. It's so cozy and homey feeling and everyone is super nice. I read a decent amount of the reviews before going here and heard my friends repeatedly hype up Barnaby's. I must say I can't agree with the people who say this pizza is to die for, but I also don't hate it. It's pretty reasonably priced, they have some decent beers on tap, and they lay their toppings on thick...really thick. They also have various sandwiches I want to try for very reasonably prices (beef sandwich for ~$3.50). One more thing, the atmosphere inside is pretty.....different. It's really dark, and seating is first come first serve seat yourself. All in all, a decent place I wouldn't mind going back to, but not first on my list the next time I'm going out to eat. read more

Barnaby's has some kickass pizza (for the area); The ground beef topping is legit, they just toss big hunks of hamburger all up on that pie. The crust is good, the cook quality is consistent, and they aren't cheap with the ingredients. It is true that the place is dated. And dark. It is also true that the ordering and obtaining of your meal takes some getting used to, and nobody here is lying when they say that after high school sports events the place is just a madhouse and waits are unbearable and the quality of service declines. However, that the pizza is good enough that none of that shit matters. We always order carry-out on account of the idiosyncrasies of dining in, and are never let down by the quality and taste of our pies. When they say "15 minutes", your pizza is ready in 15; when they say 40, it's 40; I've never gotten home and opened the box to find a cold pizza. If these guys delivered, it would be 5 stars all day. The pizza is very thin (which I am a fan of) but the bottom is usually burnt. This is a great place to go with family and friends.

The crust is what makes it happen here, and if it's not your thing, then so be it. However, in my opinion, this is one of the top 3 pizzas I've ever had. I grew up in the area, and now make it a point to find time for Barnaby's whenever I am back in town.
