Been thinking about trying this place a couple times. A friend works there (Tiffany). gave me a little push to come visit. Best decision I made in a long time. First time was on Easter. Had breakfast and was happy with the quality of the food. What makes it more satisfying is that I can order breakfast or dinner at anytime. The atmosphere is just what you would expect from a local beach bar friendly and kick back. The French dip sandwich is slamming. We'll this is now my Sunday breakfast spot. I'm telling ya the eggs are good here and I watched the cooks doing everything from scratch. Highly recommended. read more

First time here. I rented a beach cruiser and stopped in here for lunch. The bartender/waitress was Courtney. She is very passionate about her occupation. Very engaging and friendly. She made me feel very welcome. She explained the family history of the restaurant and spoke about the menu. The food was better than expected and the restaurant had a great vibe. The bartender has an incredible memory and greeted nearly every guest by name. The bar music was on point. It's a 5 star "dive bar" but it was actually an above average joint in most areas of the US. I'll stop back for lunch every time I'm in town. read more

LOCAL FLAVOUR bar, interesting eclectic mix, not so much off the beaten path (as it down from multi million dollar homes) but just not your usual trendy chain bars. It does attract a few strangling tourists, but age range can be from 21 to much, much older. The wait staff is non existent and it is tough to track down a server or get the bartenders attention oftentimes. The food IS pretty good for a dive bar, I must say. I only had the STEAMED ARTICHOKE, but it was served up nicely and came with a sauce. Never ask drunk friends for directions. If you're facing the ocean, Barnacles is to the LEFT of Hermosa Pier. I've passed by this place a million times, but never went in because it was always so loud. Friend was "in town" from Ontario (that's pretty far, even if I do mean Ontario, Calif.) and was bar-hopping. I am not a bar-hopper, but this place was pretty fun. Or maybe the people there on a Saturday night were fun. Regardless, bartenders were nice, crowd was beach-beautiful and casual and women's bathroom was clean. Thank goodness, because you know you can't do that hover thing if you've had one too many. You ladies know what I'm talking about. Guys, we hate you for being able to stand up and go anywhere. The outdoor patio area is nice, but it wasn't packed inside, had a small pool table and overall was a good atmosphere. Not a super young crowd, but no old guys going through mid-life crises trying to pick up on chicks either. Music isn't so loud that you can't hear the conversation. It's on 9th and Hermosa, like a 3-minute walk from the pier. Try it out next time you're in the area. read more

It is true this place is divey, but I also found out it's true that they have a pretty good burger! The burger/cook deserves at least four stars. My only complaint about it was we ordered med-rare and it came closer to medium (but maybe I should be happy about this for health reasons?). None-the-less, the burger looked like a real hand-formed burger. It was HUGE. I'm really glad we decided to split. Best of all it was moist! And not merely due to condiments, but the meat itself was juicy with a good texture. It had decent lettuce, tomato, and cheese, the grilled onions were good, and it had just the right amount of sauce. Fries were not my favorite. Reminded me of In-n-Out fries. if you like those, you'll probably like the ones here. I like mine crisper and more golden. The tables aren't always bused well. The crowd can be big, loud, and rowdy at times. And sometimes it's so packed that it can be hard to get the attention of the couple women tending the bar. And that is where you have to place your own orders for both food and drink. But boy did the cook hustle in that kitchen and get the orders out fast! I really don't think my 3 hour metro trip/bike ride from South Pas to Hermosa was the reason this burger tasted so good....but I'm sure it didn't hurt. PS What is up with the bathrooms in this area? I've only been for drinks but my last visit was a good one. It's a total dive and fits right into the Hermosa drinking culture. It's a couple blocks removed from the madness on the Pier, so it's a nice option if you're over that scene. You'd think it'd get a nice breeze since the ocean is a stone's throw away, but NOPE - hot as ballz in there. Fans don't help but blow the hot sweaty air around. There's a small patio but it's usually full (plus they close it down early and force you to go into the sweat pit). In terms of drinks, they've got a full bar and draft beer - a little over a dozen to choose from. Nothing out of the ordinary really but nice that they have more than just a couple domestics. I ordered something and the keg blew, so I was given a 2/3 pint while they changed it, and I was given a full pint once it was ready. Nearly two beers for the price of one? Works for me! That's good service, I say. Check it out if you're in the neighborhood and want to avoid the bros and hos on the pier. read more

DISCLAIMER: Only been here once. Group of 7 of us stopped by after spending a few hours at the beach just to grab some snacks, beer, and kill some time. They sat us out on the patio which had enough shade to keep us cool. If it wasn't for the shade, i think it may have made it a little uncomfortable. FOOD/DRINKS: 4/5 We ordered Ceviche and Wings. They were what you would expect, nothing really that pops out at you. It's your typical bar food. We ordered bucket of beers and they were great because it came in an ice bucket guaranteed to keep your beers ice cold till you crack them open. I'm not sure how this happened, but on one of the buckets at the bottom you'd have your usual ice but there was quite a bit of beer at the bottom. They were obviously not from our beers since they serve them unopened. Not too big of a deal fo rme but for some it may be a bit unsettling. SERVICE: 4/5 The female waitress that was serving our table didn't seem all that happy. She was there to take our order and make sure it was brought over. There wasn't that sense of "care" or "hospitality" that you like to see. Isn't that the reason we have tip in this country? For those service personnel who go that extra mile to ensure you are having an amazing experience? She didn't stop at all to check on our food or just how we were doing in general. Would've enjoyed it more if she was more enjoyable to have around. COST: 5/5 $10 for a bucket of ice cold beer. I'm not sure how much the food was but I don't think it came out to be too much. DECOR/AMBIENCE: 5/5 Definitely a very hip spot where you'll find most of the locals gather. It has a lot of seating inside and outside with a pool table in the back from additional entertainment. Great little spot to meet up and/or hang with friends. RECOMMENDATIONS TO MGMT: 1. Ask servers to exert a more friendly and hospitable attitude. 2. UPDATE: Barnacles now takes credit cards and serves up more than just beer WOO HOO! I like Barnacles. It's a chill neighborhood dive bar with an outdoor patio. It's not fancy and neither are the people who hang out here, but the crowd is definately a few notches better than what you've got going on down the street at Mermaid and Poopdeck. The handful of times I've been here I've always marveled at how clean the restroom is. There's a pool table in the back and the food is pretty good but I wouldn't advise making it your destination for a night out. The server was great but I'm very unimpressed by the cleanliness of the place. I really wanted to enjoy this place but it was happy hour and our drinks were crazy how do we order 5 drinks and pay $50+ compared to going down the pier/bar area and paying no more than $20? Also, it was kinda awkward that a manager would speak to an employee about drama in the kitchen in front of other customers. I mean I'm all for figuring stuff out but lower your voice. Tried to go to this bar and my best friend (who is no where near 21 years old) was denied entrance and told she has a 'fake' ID. She is from Florida, where new IDs have recently been issued. The bouncer screamed in our faces when we objected and offered to call the police to verify the validity. We tried to explain how the IDs in Florida have changed recently, and he didn't want to admit that he was in the wrong. Instead he continued to insult and belittle us. The manager came out and was no help to the situation. Such an embarrassing moment that I will never forget. Came here yesterday for brunch/lunch. Tried Sharkeez first but was extremely crowded because of stupid football. Sat outside since it was nice out - but there were about 5 flies swarming us and our food the entire time which was both gross and annoying. The food was surprisingly really good - I got the french dip with a side salad. Our server was a little distance. When she brought me my second drink she set it on the opposite side of the table from me. I could not reach it without getting up. It's hard to give a review to a place where we didn't eat, or even order anything for that matter. But here it is. The bartender cheerfully invited us to sit anywhere, and we chose a table. Then she ignored us, while glancing in our direction every so often, in between serving and entertaining her friends at the bar. She chatted, looked at pictures on people's phones, petted a customer's cat who stood on the bar restrained by a leash. The people sitting at the table behind us, who had sat down before us, were getting the same treatment, and they didn't seem to mind being ignored. But after 15 minutes, when we still had not so much as gotten a menu, the bartender moved to the other end of the bar and took out her own phone to show her pics around, and we left. I LOVE this place! The first time I ever traveled to California, my father took me to Hermosa Beach. We decided to check this spot out and we were not disappointed! The bartenders are awesome! Drinks are fair-priced! It's close to the beach. There's a pool-table! And, the overall vibe here is a positive one. I went several times after visiting Cali, because in 2009 I moved to North Hollywood, CA. Whenever I would go-to Hermosa Beach I would stop by Barnacles. When friends came in town, I'd take them to Barnacles. It's a dive-bar, but it's one of the best, if not the best, I've ever been to! I moved back to KC in 2013, but I went to Cali to visit again in 2016 and Barnacles once again did not disappoint! Strongly recommend stopping by this bar if you are at Hermosa Beach! read more

In an effort to avoid the throngs of people at the pier on a sunny Saturday afternoon, my friend and I headed over here looking for a laid back place to have a beer and relax for a bit out of the sun. This place is a locals bar, but friendly enough. The service was perhaps a bit too laid back because even though we had table service, my friend had to go up to the bar on several occasions. We also got blasted out to the patio when they decided to turn the music up really loud around 3pm. Not sure what prompted that. Before the assault on our ears the music was at the level where you could listen to the music if you dug it or tune it out and have a conversation if you didn't. And if you're picky about your restroom, you should avoid this place. Rolled in here for a little Sunday fun-day yesterday with a handful of partners in crime. I've been living Hermosa for almost 10 years and been to this joint many times over the years. Yesterday we wanted to watch the soccer game and have some food. The reason to come to this place is Burgers, Beer, and TV's. Yesterday I found out this place also has amazing onion rings. The onion rings were amazing crispy, great batter, and not oily. The burgers and food have always been pretty solid. Yesterday I have the Teriyaki Pineapple Burger. With the great onion rings it really hit the spot. When they remodeled a few years back they added alcohol and flat screen TV's to establishment. When the games are on they always have them up on the TV's. The place gets pretty busy on Fri and Sat now. It's definitely a locals bar and a different scene than the pier. read more

After a long flight from DC with my girlfriend and zero plans... no literally we just booked our tickets and decided to spend half our week in LA and then trek down to SD, with no itinerary or place to stay. Can you say SURPRISE Cali friends?! Anyways our friend that lives out in Hermosa took us out here after scooping us from LAX. By this time it was almost midnight and this place was the PERFECT place for a nightcap. Friendly, no bs service. Probably one of my favorite bars out there. The following night we literally hit every other bar in the area - this was possible to do because we probably spent about 5 minutes in each bar, most were AWFUL. The lack of diversity in Hermosa definitely made me miss the DC area. If you want a great laid back place to catch up with friends with no fluff, this is the place to go. read more

This place gets downright out of hand on the weekends and they have live music every now and then during the week. You get that dive bar feel without the stench of failure and worn out, sagging bar tenders. The people that work there are rad. The thing that most people don't know about this bar is that they have AN AWESOME COOK STAFF. They have a Vietnamese chef (I have no idea if this is true) that makes killer Pho that is normally reserved for the most esteemed South East Asian operations. And for breakfast? This place delivers. $1 pancakes, a country-fried steak red necks dream of, epic eggs beenny, and bloody marys to round the whole meal off. Go there for the party at night, come back for breakfast on the patio in the morning - NFL games play on the TVs outside on Sundays and they have $1 beers and $5 pitchers!
