Parking is always tough in Hermosa so we decided to walk in. We came by last Thursday afternoon for a late lunch. Seating was fairly quick and service pretty prompt. They were quick to get us waters and did their best to accommodate us in the shade ( it's been super hot as of late) and the restaurant seating is outdoors (not an enclosed space). On a normal day, the restaurant being an open concept would have been fabulous but man, I wished they had a/c and it was blasting this particular day. Man, I'm not sure why their rating isn't higher. It's quality food! It's the the level of FWD, sadly no, but it's very very good. Service is generally good too. I'm not sure if Brian is still there, but dude is a gem. I'm curious as to whether or not the Redondo or Manhattan outpost is as great. I have no idea how we ended up in Hermosa Beach, but we ended up here and came with a whole lot of hunger. This little downtown area had a few different restaurants we were considering, but thanks to my wife wanting to use a washroom right away we ended up coming here. This small, but nice restaurant looks exactly how a place should look near the ocean and had a super friendly employee take our orders as well. For lunch I ended up doing the 3 for $21 deal which is exactly that, a fantastic deal. I ended up choosing the House Fries, the Tempura Fish Tacos, and the 1/2 Grilled Cheese Sandwich. How was it? House Fries- Covered in Grana Padano and Mustard Aioli, these French Fries were super crispy and tasted really, really good. Tempura Fish Tacos- Two tacos that I wish I could transform into 20. The Tempura fish here was absolutely delicious. 1/2 Grilled Cheese Sandwich- A few different cheeses between some sourdough, a simple but fantastic grilled cheese sandwich. Overall, The Hook & Plow was a fantastic place to stop for some lunch and I plan on checking out the other locations now. I don't typically write reviews unless I really think the place deserves one. For this restaurant to be In a prime location such as the Hermosa pier, you'd expect it to be up to standards and the same level as the other restaurants on pier ave. This restaurant fell short in every way possible. The restaurant itself looks extremely run down, dirty, and tired. I understand it's an indoor/outdoor restaurant but the amount of flies circling around us the whole time was really unappetizing, at least get some sort of fly trap. The servers were nice enough, but really nothing extraordinary, I sat myself when I entered. I ordered the bistro board and got a grilled cheese and 2 steak tacos. Despite us being one of the only tables in the restaurant, the food took at least 40 minutes to come out. The grilled cheese was actually so horrible I'm sorry. I thought that was a safe choice because who can mess up a grilled cheese but they clearly did. The cheese was rubbery and wet. The 2 steak tacos were very tiny as well. I ended up eating half of my mom's chicken sandwich (the sandwich next to the grilled cheese in the picture) and even that tasted mediocre. I just felt grossed out during the whole experience by the atmosphere, the food, dirty cups etc. For there to be so many other options in a walking distance, there is really no reason to seek out this one. Tasty brunch menu. Had the traditional breakfast with eggs, bacon, hash and sour dough toast. My friend had the salmon salad. I ate my whole plate of food including a taste of my friend's salad. We were served by John who ensured all our needs were met from start to finish. Now let's discuss the food. I shared plates with two other friends and OMG. We had the steak hash, chicken and waffles, and shrimp and grits. And every single thing was DELICIOUS . LISTEN. Come to this place, eat well, and enjoy yourself. Stopped in early saturday night, they were at about 40% capacity- started with a dozen oysters- they were tiny, about the size of a Kumamoto, and had so much citrus on them you couldnt taste the oyster at all, half of them had shell shards in them- Next came the pear burrata salad, if my portion had any pear whatsoever, I couldnt tell, just wilted arugula and bland burata drenched in an overly sweet "balsamic", and candied nuts- disgustingly cloyingly sweet- Lastly, a steak sandwich- the under seasoned beef itself was nice, but the fried bread and (again overly sweet) "onion jam" just covered up any beef flavor at all- so, 100$ down the tubes for three very small courses of carelessly prepared food. I had their taco Tuesday special, 3 tacos & 50% off a beer or margarita. Oh yeah! Went with the beer. The tacos were really good, asada, pollo & fish with all the fixings. Get their home made salsa. An $18 burger isn't unreasonable, but the execution left much to be desired. I was excited for the fried shoestring onions, only to find them stale. The Gorgonzola was a nice touch, but the overall seasoning was underwhelming--so much so that my friend asked for ketchup to add some flavor. We haven't been here for a while and decided to give this place another try. Online, it said kids eat free on Wednesdays with an entree, but when we arrived, it said kids eat free on Mondays. We ordered the steak sandwich medium rare. It was pretty good and full of flavor. The toasted bread was quite greasy. It came with a side salad which was also good. Their striped sea bass ceviche was also good. It comes with avocado and purple cauliflower. I really liked their ceviche sauce, it was nice and tangy (I could eat almost anything with that sauce). Furikake was also delicious, it was nice and crispy. My son had the kids burger, and ate almost all of it, so it must have been good. My daughter had the happy hour beef slider. I had a small bite, and it was really flavorful with hearty beef patty, crispy onions and creamy Gorgonzola cheese spread. Their bread was a bit tough. Our waiter was really nice and came back several times to make sure the food was good and make sure we didn't need anything else. She was always smiling and cheerful. For people living on the east side of Hermosa Beach, the Hook & Plow is an easy choice to make for lunch, happy hour, or just to hang out on a warm, sunny day. The menu has a good (albeit limited) selection and it does change over for dinner, so time your arrival or your early dinner will actually be a late lunch or happy hour. Speaking of which, the H&P is awesome for happy hour which ends at 6pm. You can eat "inside" which is actually very open (but can be crowded) or outside across the sidewalk where there's more room. Parking can get tricky on this street but there is metered parking that is cheap. We made a reservation beforehand. They had a pretty nice wine list. Me and my friends were in the mood for something healthy so we all went with salads. I ordered the Skuna Bay Salmon Salad ($23). The salad came with a big piece of salmon and fresh veggies. Really loved the lemon avocado dressing. Overall, I recommend coming here.
