Barnes & Noble is definitely a happy place for me, and this location (specifically) has a lot of great things to offer any book lover. The book selection is incredible, but the opportunities to join a community are what really make this place deserve 5 stars. Not only do they have two stories of books to browse, but they also host tons of events weekly. I've had the opportunity to attend some of their kid-themed events with my son, as well as some of their larger adult events where we get to meet authors. They also have multiple book clubs that meet at the store. In addition to books, they have a great gift-giving section with Lego, puzzles, stationery, board games, and more. The book sellers are also great; they love to talk about books and provide recommendations. It's a level of customer service I wholeheartedly appreciate. My only negative criticism is that this location does not have a cafe, and the greeting cards are overpriced (most are like $6). read more

I used to take my kiddos frequently to Barnes & Noble (refer to Review #588) in my 'hood, particularly enticed by their defunct Kids' Club membership. My love for reading started in kindergarten when our school librarian would drop by bi-weekly to read to us & introduced new books from 1st grade on up. I can get so immersed in a book that I can imagine myself being one of the characters... & that love now translates to reading adventures for my kids, mostly my 10 YO son. His teen sister seemed to have outgrown books & into electronics/screen time. O_o I signed my son up for the Bella Terra (refer to Review #962) Kids Club: Valentine's Day Sweet Stroll, & my car was parked near the bookstore. My son is such an avid reader that we don't have enough space to buy that many books, so he gets that itch fulfilled at the library (glad our library district removed the overdue book fees... whew!). His elementary school recently held a book fair but didn't find anything to his liking. Since the kids club event was done & we were nearby, I suggested browsing the bookstore to make-up for the book fair's lack of chapter books. Like the Torrance location, this is also 2 levels with the kids section (aka Barnes & Noble, Jr.) right off the escalator. I love this table with a Roald Dahl quote: "If you are going to get anywhere in life, you have to Read A Lot of Books." Yep, I agree! M found 2 that he wanted: Spy School (by Stuart Gibbs), & The Beast The Queen & The Lost Knight (by Alexandria Rogers); both are geared towards middle school with the former being adventure fiction & the latter as fantasy fiction. I actually included the Spy School series on his holiday wish list for his uncles & aunties. I'm happy to learn that we're on the same wavelength, even though the list is mine & created without his input. I'm a huge Harry Potter fan & read the series over a dozen times! With each read, I find different nuances that I missed; sometimes watching the movies (though they don't always follow the book), I also go back to reference the book & understand why/how that particular scene was interpreted. I was flabbergasted with all the HP goods... I wanted it all!! M was no different except he wanted the Minecraft stuff! LOL While waiting for an open register, I saw these 2 gift cards that I just had to snap a pic! "Dear Dad, Just wanted to say congratulations I turned out perfectly." "Dear Mom, I love how we don't have to say I'm your favorite child." How funny are these gift cards?! LMAO When it came my turn to pay, the cashier mention their free Rewards Membership & if I wanted to sign up. Why not? It's still early in the year, but did you know about B&N's summer perk? They have a Summer Reading Journal for the grade school set. All they have to do is read 8 books & write about their favorite part in the Reading Journal, turn in the journal at the bookstore, & choose a free book from the Reading Journal's list. What's not to love about Barnes & Noble? While I might not return to this location, I definitely will be visiting the Torrance location again & again! I am a huge fan of Barnes and Noble. I was impressed with Barnes and Noble in Bella Terra at Huntington Beach branch. It is one of the nicest and largest Barnes and Noble I recently visited. It has two levels. Both escalators and elevator are availabl. The store is very organized, clean and spacious. I loved walking around and exploring every section. They offer a wide selection of books, stationaries, merchandise, puzzles, board games and more. The kids section is adorable. The staff were very nice. I went there to attend a special event. Whenever I go to this Barnes and Noble I always have a good time! The customer service are always on top to things whenever I have a question if they have a manga or comic in stock. I went to this location on my birthday and I found some good stuff in the and comic section. Found 2 of the comics I been meaning to read and treated myself as it was my birthday. The staff is really great. Just in the area for a haircut, decided to get lost in the stacks at Barnes and Noble. There was a recommended book I couldn't locate and asked a staff member to see if they sold out. They had one in inventory but would happily check the different shelves. While waiting, I wandered to the second floor to see other genres. Unfortunately, their last copy was nowhere to be found...or probably in someone's hands to purchase, I think. Staff looked into their system and found 2 other stores that had my book but it was up to me to call or they could order it which could take 3-5 days. I was on a mission to have this book that day so I immediately called both locations. Overall Experience & Atmosphere: I love coming here--the staff is always kind and helpful, and the store has a peaceful vibe (they even played classical violin music on my last visit). It's a great escape on days when I feel lonely or need a break. I enjoy asking the staff about their favorite books or what they're currently reading for inspiration. One of the managers, Olana (I believe that's her name), has helped me out several times--she's awesome, and everyone is so sweet. Store Layout & Features: This spacious, two-floor store offers plenty of chairs to relax in, though there's no café (Philz Coffee and Whole Foods are nearby). I really enjoy the manga/anime section downstairs, while upstairs features romance, kids, art, and travel sections. They also host a monthly book club for fantasy, romance, and horror books. I haven't attended an in-person event yet, but it's great that the option is available. Membership Benefits: I started a two-person book club with my best friend and got a BN membership for $40 a year. The membership includes 10% off every purchase and a free ebook each month. The rewards program adds up nicely and is free to join. Additional Perks: BN offers a decent selection of stationery and gifts. My Christmas and Valentine's cards were adorable and didn't break the bank. Although BN doesn't price match (so some books are cheaper on Amazon), I value the in-person experience and positive vibes. I like B&N and actually pay for their yearly membership. So when there is a location I never been, I try to visit it to see how it is. Since I had to meet my aunt in this area, I thought this would be a great place. The store is located in the Bella Terra shopping center with other stores and eateries. So the parking gets busy and the store also tends to be busier than other B&N stores. Book stores in general are great. Books are my go to for relieving stress and to just pass time. B&N always has a great selection of books and I love the new release section because staff will write a short summary of the books they selected. It really helps out when you are browsing or have had your eye on that selection. This location is two story so I am pretty sure you will have no problem finding what you like. They have a huge selection of music, too on the first floor. The second floor has a great selection of children books that the little ones may enjoy. Overall, this is a great location and in a busy area so I highly think this is a favorite for a lot of people. So if you decide to take a trip here, take your time and really look at what you want. And I wouldn't give it to the other B&N's I've been to (although they're not bad, solid fours) but this one is a cut above the other Long Beach one or the HB one. Love this location because it is book paradise! Books for the whole family. I went to my first author meet and greet there last night and had such an amazing evening. The event was extremely well-organized and the price I paid was slightly more than the cost of Laurie Gilmore's latest book, so it really was the best value. Today I attended a book signing at this Barnes & Noble location. It was really nice but I wish they would have pushed the information out by email to ticket holders instead of only on instagram. I wasn't aware that we could show up as early as 10am to have a better seated spot. Other than that, all of the employees were very nice, friendly and helpful. This location is huge and has an amazing selection of books. However, I originally wanted to purchase the first two books in Tracy Deonna's series at this location but they did not have the hardcover so if you want something specific, it may be helpful to call first. When I called they said they would place an order but a few days later she called me back to say they could not fulfill it and while saddened, I did appreciate the follow up a lot! She was VERY rude and condescending to the older gentleman in front of me who clearly was hard of hearing and didn't understand all the technology these days when paying. I came here specifically for the Grady Hendrix Witchcraft for Wayward Girls book signing. It has been a long time since I have been to a Barnes & Noble that was this big and this nice. Tons of room, everything was neatly displayed and clean. I am impressed with how well the staff ran the book signing. Everyone knew how everything worked. My wife is disabled and we did not even have to ask for ADA accommodations. Staff recognized it right away and found her an appropriate place to sit that was out of the way, and allowed her to view and enjoy the event without any issues. I would gladly go out of my way to attend signing here again even though I live more than an hour away. read more

I currently found out about the summer book program that allows kids to read a certain amount of books, (8 or so) write about each book and they can get a free book. I rarely review a place like B&N. I love to read, recently I devour books, all genres really. I do like historical fiction. I've read most of "my" authors and have been reading down new veins. Recently finished ALL the Sarah Maas books and loved them. So asked my adult boys to recommend more fantasy. They love it, it has not been my thing. I absolutely love book stores! The big ones, and small ones. There's just nothing like coming across a great book off the shelf that you never heard of. I'm always looking for my next read that I'll spend on during my work lunch hour. And yes I check the online prices first, just like everyone else, but sometimes, like today, there's only a couple dollars difference. And I would much rather not have to deal with shipping, having my book delayed, or delivered to the wrong address. Which happens too often. There are always featured books and authors displayed, and I have been introduced to many new and amazing authors and stories that way. I also love how they have a knowledgeable rep at a station in between the aisles to answer any questions, or give recommendations. It's a very much appreciated feature of Barnes & Noble and I hope they always keep it. I will definitely always prefer to walk into my neighborhood bookstore for my next read, than that other way. read more

I purchased a Nook on line from a company and had trouble setting it up. I went to the Barnes & Noble Store on Edinger for assistance. Crystal and Shaelyn went above and beyond to try to get the Nook on line, spending at least an hour or perhaps an hour and a half trying to get it to work--to no avail. I also needed a book and Shaelyn walked me to where the book was Iocated. Both were extremely polite and cheerful. read more

I've only ever come here during their Criterion Collection sale so I can only speak to the DVD section. I will say, however, it's always nice walking into a Barnes & Noble and seeing a big, 2 story building full of books. The Criterion selection at this branch is great. They often have everything I'm looking for where as other locations will force me to go to a few to get everything I need...err...want. They also always have an employee ready to check you out since this section has security detectors at the point of entrance/exit. Once again, something other locations don't always have. They're always incredibly friendly & helpful and do a great job of getting you in & out while also making you feel like you're welcomed & more than just a point of sale for them. Parking outside can be a bit limited if you're looking to park right out front. This location is part of a big outdoor shopping center so just be aware of that. Personally, I often park a little out of the way to just get it over with. So all you cinephile out there who love the bi-annual Criterion sale, this location should be your go to. read more

Look. There's a magic in having a giant-ass bookstore to roam around in and browse. It's disappearing, and this one has remained pretty great for decades. Make it part of your outings to Bella Terra. Bring your partner. Go here, stroll around, judge books by their cover, discover something new, and spend a little money to help keep this experience alive. Most of all, bring your kids. They've got a great kid's book section and for older kids there's something special about browsing the stacks and finding something that ignites curiosity and imagination. It gives kids a chance to search out and discover their own interests in a tactile way that offers avenues and surprises that a search bar on youtube just doesn't. Fewer creepy pitfalls than the internet too. Shoutout to Malia for being *awesome* and not only being generally helpful and friendly, but also for helping us investigate the mystery of the bizarre beige EGG™. We never figured out what it is, exactly, but (in addition to a bag full of books) I got it and brought it home and now it's here and so that's a thing. I love this Barnes & Noble particularly because of the staff. In fact, my previous review, in which I highlighted a former employee named Alex, is no longer up for whatever reason. This BnN is relatively large with a great selection. As mentioned, the employees are fantastic and ever so helpful. For example, my school-aged Daughter wanted to get a book that was part of a series. Matt found the book for her which had the "Buy 1 and get the 2nd one for 50% off" sticker. My Baby is a relatively fast reader, and she also wanted the next book in the series. After checking BnN's inventory to make sure that there were enough of the next book for other customers, he put the same sticker on that next book in the series - truly exceptional service! As Alex has left her employment with BnN to continue her education full-time, Katie has been helping us out immensely with helpful recommendations, finding books, and encouraging my Daughter to read by talking to her about certain books. After checking inventory, Katie also placed a "Buy 1 and get the 2nd one for 50% off" sticker on the next book in a series that my Daughter started reading (Vol. 1 already had the sticker). Katie had also recommended the series which my Baby loves. Another time, Katie found the book that we were looking for, but it was only available in hardcover. I told her that we will wait for the softcover, but she informed us that BnN was having a sale on certain hardcover books, and that she would check. Turns out that the sale price of the hardcover was just about the same as the softcover price! I can purchase books online, of course, but we will never experience the same interactions that we do at this BnN. My Daughter likes to hold the books, look through them, read the summary, and talk to the staff about them. There is absolutely no substitute for the "feel-good" encouragement that my Child and I receive from this BnN, and its wonderful staff, every time we visit! read more

We visit this Barnes & Noble location often to browse and of recent, buy Manga. They have a really good and extensive selection of books and light novels. In the day and age where almost all things books have gone digital, the passion of reading, holding and looking at an actual book is still alive, thanks to B & N. Sales and customer service are mostly kind, they do have a few introverted employees that seem to not provide much customer service, but all in all it's a great vibe at this store. read more

The management and the staff at this location specifically need to be retrained. They are condescending and look at you with weird stares when you walk in with an item that you need to return, almost as if you're a criminal. It's holiday season, hello?? Are returns that frowned upon or unheard of here? That's just the start of making you feel undesired and uncomfortable as a customer. They lied to me at this location on multiple different occasions saying they cannot accept a return for an item (IN WHICH I HAVE A RECEIPT FOR AND AM WITHIN THEIR 30 DAY RETURN POLICY) and enforced that I have to ship the item back, claiming no stores are going to be able to take the return... like what? They make up bogus lies about their policy when the receipt in the package clearly states the customer has 30 days to return it via online OR AT ANY BARNES AND NOBLES PHYSICAL STORE. So after these bogus claims of returning would not be possible at any store for this specific order; I drive to another Barnes and Nobles location in Newport Beach, and they accepted the return in store, no issues. Nothing mentioned at other locations that this store claimed. I've been a paid premium member at Barnes and Nobles for a few years now and the lies told at THIS location of made up policies are unheard of and don't follow suit with other locations. It's unfortunate because this location is a closer drive for me but the service is really that bad to the point I don't mind driving an extra 15-20 minutes to go to another just to avoid the obnoxious service here. Hilarious, I won't be coming back here again and I would suggest going to a different Barnes and Noble location unless there's new management. Zip tying chairs to a railing overlooking the elevator shaft on the 2nd level next to the children's section is an accident waiting to happen. Are these chairs really so precious that they must be zip-tied in place all over the store? I mentioned this danger to a manager last week and today I'm back to see they've ignored it. They were pretty indifferent when I mentioned it. I sure hope a child doesn't get seriously hurt climbing and falling here. Customer service here continues to go downhill.
