I've been eating at Barracuda for a couple of decades now, and it's good to see it refreshed and performing well under new ownership. The menu has been quite stable, serving up a blend of Japanese classics and Americanized boutique rolls (favorites: Agedashi Tofu, 49er roll, The Great, Spicy Vegetarian Roll, Popcorn Shrimp...). The prices are surprisingly reasonable now: lower than a lot of sushi places in the evening, and with lunch specials that are insanely good value. The only thing I'd say can be improved is the service, which is rather casual: sometimes the staff are chatting more than paying attention to the customers. read more

I live nearby and I come to this place every so often - it's usually very good and they have some nice deals for happy hour, etc. I think it's under new management which seems to be improving things and they've had some fun events lately. They have some cool drinks and it's also a great to-go option. It can be hard to park because it's in downtown, but the location is super convenient and close to lots of other fun stuff. read more

Hidden gem in downtown Burlingame! The food was delicious, fresh, and very reasonably priced. I chose their dinner combo with soup, salad, California rolls, Saba, and ribeye steak -- everything was flavorful and nicely prepared. I also loved the variety of selections on the menu. We came for dinner on a Friday. We were happy they could accommodate the six of us since they were busy. We caught Happy Hour just in time (6:30 pm). We had the veggie gyozas for appetizers. Stopped in for a light lunch before a Dr's Appt nearby. It was a "treat yo'self lunch" for me so I decided to order a few of my favorites. I ordered the butterfish sashimi, which they call the Escolapacho. I love butterfish or escolar, whatever you want to call it - it's so creamy and delicious but can be bland without flavor. They key with good butterfish dishes is the sauce that goes along with it. This one has garlic puree, spicy ponzu, fried garlic and shallots. I also ordered a spicy tuna roll, which was delicious - but not as divine as the Escolapacho. This was a great place to stop for lunch and really quick. read more

Came here a couple of weeks ago. We used to go to Barracuda when it was in Serramonte but they closed. We've been wanting to try this place for a while so finally had the chance. We were greeted and seated right away. The restaurant ambience didn't feel like a Japanese restaurant-felt like a Mediterranean place. Very dark decor and dingy. The food was disappointing and we had such high expectations of this place. We had edamame (not complimentary), chicken katsu, short ribs, spicy tuna roll, the best of the best roll which was not the best. In fact the texture was too mushy, no crunch or freshness to it, so I couldn't finish it. Everything else was ok and over priced! Not sure if we will be back. read more

Barracuda is off the main buzz of Burlingame Avenue so I enjoy that part of it. Outdoor dining is available. We went at lunchtime on a rainy day and ate inside. Service gets a thumbs up! As does the Tuna Tataki that I ordered and the bento box with shrimp tempura & a California roll that came with salad, rice and miso soup. The interior could be updated, especially the upholstery of the seating area inside...but at night, I'm sure the fireplace creates an ambience that is delightful and romantic. Heard about the Barracuda Sushi grand re-opening due to new ownership so decided to check out what was advertised ("sample our signature sushi rolls"). Parking was terrible on a bright sunny weekend so we were a bit late and there was a line already waiting to go in. Uh-oh, seems like the place is full so we have to wait until someone leaves. That's ok, we said. It's a nice day outside. 40 minutes later, we got seated. My guess is that we would have gotten seated at least 20 minutes earlier if not for 'special friends' of the owner jumping the line ahead of us. Of course no one explained this to us, but I wasn't born yesterday. We got seated near the back of the restaurant and there was chaos all around us. Staff members were just running around and waiters seemed confused. After a while, someone gave us plates and chopsticks. No one gave us water or asked us what we wanted to drink, so we had to flag a waiter down to ask for some water. That waiter became our default waiter - prior to that, no one greeted us and identified themselves as the person who would be serving us. Not a good first impression. A few more minutes later, a random waiter came by and gave us each one thin piece of sushi roll to sample each. She did not describe what was in it nor what the name of the roll was, so even if we liked it, we would not have known what to order. We looked at each other and shrugged, happily eating the sample. Honestly it was just okay. There must be more, right? No - that was our first and last piece of complimentary sushi. Meanwhile, we saw other plates of samples go elsewhere. Not sure where - maybe to those owner's special friends? Who knows. We were still hungry so despite my instincts, we ordered two modest plates to share, quickly ate the food, paid, and left. The things we ordered were good. But from an experience standpoint, what a disappointment. If you are doing a grand re-opening, you have to do it right. This was definitely the wrong way to do it. It's not like we were the only ones who noticed the 'VIP' line jumping. The party behind us noticed too and was quite irritated. The wait staff were fine but were clearly not trained or managed well. But one piece of sushi to sample per person? Come on. Will not be coming back. Just didn't feel welcomed. Even if there is another grand re-opening. read more

I have just discovered very exciting news that recently the Barracuda Japanese restaurant is now under new ownership under the name of Barracuda Sushi. Knowing that many of you consider this location, one of your favorites as we do, we had to drop in and try it last Friday. It was very good food before, but after the first meal with the new ownership, you could instantly see an upgrade and it's on its way to become excellent! We've been to Barracuda a handful of times, and the first few visits were great! Unfortunately, the service has gone down substantially in the last year. We were seated by a waiter who also seems to be the bartender, busboy, and server, but who spent majority of the time chatting for long periods of time behind the bar or at other tables. We waited for about 8 minutes before we realized no one was coming by with menus, so we asked another worker (who walked by and avoided eye contact) if we could get menus and waters. He responded with "let me get your server" then we continued to wait another few mins just for our server to come by. He finally brought menus, and then we waited 14 minutes to get hot tea...and waters for 3 people. After about 45 minutes, another server finally brought out the food. The food was decent, hot when it came out, but they brought out the main courses before the happy hour dishes that we ordered (two California rolls and a 3-piece shrimp tempura). Yet not once did someone come back and ask how our food was, or if we needed water refills. We stacked up our finished dishes nicely and placed them at the end of the table, yet the servers continued to walk by and avoid picking up the dishes, which was strange. We finished eating around 7pm and waited for someone to come back for our bill, which after asking, they brought it around 7:30pm. My husband accidentally gave his expired credit card, to which the server came back to the table and announced at the top of his lungs "SORRY SIR BUT THE CARD HAS BEEN DECLINED", clearly loud enough for other customers to hear. It was really inappropriate and unwarranted, especially after waiting 30 mins for one person to come by and even give us the bill in the first place. We obviously gave the correct card when we realized it was the wrong one, but no reason to act this way after absolutely terrible service the entire 2 hours we were there. If you're looking for Japanese food, I'd recommend take out, unless you have 3 hours to sit down for a meal. read more

Everything here is delicious! It's my preferred go to place for lunch. They're always easy to order from (I use their website) and the pickup process is fast and easy. Talk about convenience!! I almost always get their Seasonal Field Greens Salad which is amazing! I usually get the added side of grilled salmon but thought it'd try their grilled chicken and it didn't disappoint. They made sure to inform us that last call would be soon though which is totally understandable. On top of this, 2 parties came after us and they STILL sat them! I was super impressed, that was rly nice of them. We checked in and got the free vegetable tempura. It was made nice and fresh (and HOT!) Really yummy though! The rolls: -Spicy Crunch Roll: Love at first bite! You can tell how fresh and good quality the ingredients are! -Crunchy Salmon Tempura Roll: Super flavorful, and even better than the first one! Salmon was baked well, all the flavors meshed well. -Giants Roll: Per the recommendation of our server, this took the cake for me!!!!! It was sooo interesting, and so GOOD! I had to update my review because each time I come it's just phenomenal service. The quality of food is just so good & the service is outstanding! We sat outside, which I loved that we had that option! After looking at the menu my husband noticed that his favorite roll had been discontinued. We mentioned it to our waitress and she went above and beyond to ask the chef if he could make it for us since they weren't that busy. During our whole time eating it was nothing but excellent service. The waitress even offered to take a family picture for us, she was very attentive to not only us, but my children as well. It truly means something to me when people give my kids the same amazing customer service they're giving us. The experience today was not a great one and I will not ever come back because of it. Our server started off pretty nice and then seemed irritated with us for asking questions and for basic things like sugar for ice tea or a fork and an extra plate for our child and some napkins. I realize it's asking for a lot but if you would just give those things then you wouldn't have to be asked. I mean if there's 3 people at a table why do you bring 2 settings?! Why does someone have to ask for sugar when they order ice tea? You work in hospitality. Assume people want ketchup with their fries, a knife with their steak, and some freaking sugar for their ice tea!! Act like it's not your first day in this industry! Furthermore don't make people feel like crap for asking for basic things that YOU should already be doing. Ordered seaweed salad and got like 2 pieces of seaweed with about a fourth cup of cucumbers for $8. Seriously?! Literally laughing out loud at how ridiculous you guys are. Ordered a bento box with salmon Teriyaki since they don't have salmon Shioyaki , with no Teriyaki sauce, said it 3 times, he still brings it out with Teriyaki sauce. One little pathetic ass piece of fish. When he's told about the sauce being on it he's not even remotely apologetic. Waste of money. What's even funnier is he brings a miso soup sized portion of teryaki sauce on the side. Like really? Lol Mom ordered hamachi Kama and it had a little salad on the side but no dressing. When asked for dressing, he says it's not a salad, it's more of a garnish. Hey buddy, a garnish is a mint leaf on a desert or a sprinkle of parsley on some food. You put a half a cup of lettuce on her plate, the same exact thing you call a salad in my bento box, give her the damn dressing, and how about a little less of your smug feedback. I always find it amazing when you go to a restaurant and the servers act like they are better than you. Please don't try to educate me. Maybe educate yourself a little bit more about hospitality and service before you try to make other people feel stupid. I studied culinary arts and have worked in hospitality for over 25 years. I know what a garnish is and that ain't it. So bummed I took my mom and my little boy here for what I was hoping would be a nice lunch. Luckily Salt & Straw made up for it! Save your money folks. This place serves below average food with crappy service. Jae, I think you need a crash course on how to treat customers especially considering how empty your restaurant is.
