I have eaten here for many years this is my go to for Japanese cuisine. Highly recommend for a great meal.

The experience today was not a great one and I will not ever come back because of it. Our server started off pretty nice and then seemed irritated with us for asking questions and for basic things like sugar for ice tea or a fork and an extra plate for our child and some napkins. I realize it's asking for a lot but if you would just give those things then you wouldn't have to be asked. I mean if there's 3 people at a table why do you bring 2 settings?! Why does someone have to ask for sugar when they order ice tea? You work in hospitality. Assume people want ketchup with their fries, a knife with their steak, and some freaking sugar for their ice tea!! Act like it's not your first day in this industry! Furthermore don't make people feel like crap for asking for basic things that YOU should already be doing. Ordered seaweed salad and got like 2 pieces of seaweed with about a fourth cup of cucumbers for $8. Seriously?! Literally laughing out loud at how ridiculous you guys are. Ordered a bento box with salmon Teriyaki since they don't have salmon Shioyaki , with no Teriyaki sauce, said it 3 times, he still brings it out with Teriyaki sauce. One little pathetic ass piece of fish. When he's told about the sauce being on it he's not even remotely apologetic. Waste of money. What's even funnier is he brings a miso soup sized portion of teryaki sauce on the side. Like really? Lol Mom ordered hamachi Kama and it had a little salad on the side but no dressing. When asked for dressing, he says it's not a salad, it's more of a garnish. Hey buddy, a garnish is a mint leaf on a desert or a sprinkle of parsley on some food. You put a half a cup of lettuce on her plate, the same exact thing you call a salad in my bento box, give her the damn dressing, and how about a little less of your smug feedback. I always find it amazing when you go to a restaurant and the servers act like they are better than you. Please don't try to educate me. Maybe educate yourself a little bit more about hospitality and service before you try to make other people feel stupid. I studied culinary arts and have worked in hospitality for over 25 years. I know what a garnish is and that ain't it. So bummed I took my mom and my little boy here for what I was hoping would be a nice lunch. Luckily Salt & Straw made up for it! Save your money folks. This place serves below average food with crappy service. Jae, I think you need a crash course on how to treat customers especially considering how empty your restaurant is. We went on a Friday night so it was pretty loud and busy. The servers kept checking in on us which was nice. Menu had a wide assortment of items. I got the sashimi salad rolls which was delicious and the seasonal fried greens salad was refreshing and a pretty large portion. We also got the salmon poketini, which was incredibly delicious, that I highly recommend. The food was pretty filling for Japanese food. I was really looking forward to dining here this with my daughter, since it was highly recommended by my coworker, but unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The owner or I think he was the owner, seemed to be watching us closely, like we were going to leave without paying. He asked everyone else if they needed anything or if they were okay except us as if we weren't welcome. That kind of treatment was disheartening. On top of that, the food was disappointing, especially the ramen. Sooooo I really like Barracuda. My daughter and I go often for the happy hour and we Love the popcorn shrimp. SO good! However I went yesterday and wanted to sit and just order a drink before my meeting. The confusion behind this was so baffling. The tall young kid was confused of my request. A nice girl with blue hair sat me and took my order. But apparently a Paloma is to much to ask for. I know,I'm in a Japanese restaurant. There was a handsome gentleman, nice, friendly and had a smile, that came and advised a Paloma was not available but a margarita was. When I questioned him again, another gentleman, - possibly the bar tender, came over, angry and irritated. Advised they don't have anything possible to make a Paloma. Apparently there is only two was to make a Paloma. I was helped by almost everyone and there was no friendliness or customer service. Food: rice had an odd taste and all of the rolls fell apart. Service: servers are uninterested and hard to flag down. They didn't seem like they enjoyed being there. By the end of the meal, we were one of maybe 6 tables in the place and we still would rarely see our server. Met a friend at the B'GAME library and took a short 1/2 block to find Hostess and Server Lucely to be a delight!Just like our orders! Go for the California Sunshine roll. I loved it! The Bento boxes (my friend had salmon with an accommodation to make it minus teriyaki- that request was graciously made) are substantial and delicious per her comments. We've been regulars at Barracuda for a while now. Let me start by saying that the food, albeit pricey, is pretty darn good. 3 of us went for dinner on friday night. Our bill with tip (20%) was $200. So it's not like we were slumming it. Of the multiple dishes we ordered, we go the Tuna Ahi tartare - which tastes fantastic. They serve that with 7-8 "fried" tortilla chips. We asked for 3-4 tortilla chips, and the server came back saying they would charge $4!!! $4 for 3-4 tortilla chips while we were waiting for the rest of our 8 dishes?? Seriously?? We expressed our disappointment at this attempt to gouge to our server. The server was great (20% tip made sense); we were told the owner has instructions for the help staff to even charge $$s if someone wants extra hot sauce, etc. There are SOOOO many good Japanese places in San Mateo, Burlingame, etc., We are done with this place. We called at 6:45 and asked if we could make reservations and they could take us at 7pm! What a great last minute decision. There's was a long line of people picking up to go orders but only waited 5 mins before they took our name. There was a bit of confusion because hostess couldn't find our name on list but lady in the back said "yes! Table for 4!" Seated right away. Service was fast and friendly. Mediocre, at best. We went with a large party of 12 people, and had 3 separate checks. We ordered the sashimi special and a few rolls. The sashimi was good, but we got shorted on the order. Menu said there were 22 pieces of sashimi-we ordered 3 orders of this, and then we divided them among the group, only to find that every plate was missing 4 pieces-there were 18 slices and not 22. We pointed this out to the server, who at first, refused to admit we had been shorted. She brought us the remaining pieces, albeit grudgingly. Oh, did I mention that the 2'pieces of sea bass fell off the plate and landed on the table? Not even a "sorry." We then ordered 3 rolls: Lion King, Dream Machine, and "Burlingame roll. The two that we got were delicious. We never got our LK roll, or it went to the wrong side of the table. we reordered-the second set of what we got was nothing like the first set, but the server insisted they were the same items. Pros: Good prices, delicious food, lots of parking nearby, fast service Cons: not enough outdoor seating :) Love sushi and miso soup? This is the place. They are conveniently located right by Burlingame Ave so you can stop by real quick and then carry on exploring what Burlingame Ave has to offer. My favorite is the veggie Gyoza (something I haven't seen at other Japanese restaurants yet). Maybe I have to keep exploring and I'll find it. My wife had the chicken katsu bento box and she loved it. The salad has a dressing I've never had before but it was not overpowering or plain. Just simple and tasty. The California roll has a lot of crab meat which I thought most people would like, I prefer a little less but it was still good. Came for dessert for lunch. Can't comment on the main food but the dessert was a let down Chocolate soufflé: it should NOT be called a soufflé. It's a chocolate lava cake. It's not light and airy or fluffy. It has a liquid molten center and tastes like a cake. The chocolate flavor is nice but it is not a soufflé. If they called it a chocolate lava cake I'd give it 4 or 5 stars. But as a soufflé it was a major disappointment. The first one came out under baked and completely liquid. So they baked it some more and brought it out while they also baked a new one for us. So the service and commitment to quality was impressive. The twice baked cake was a solid cake, not even a lava cake. The second soufflé was a pretty good molten center lava cake. With vanilla ice cream. Quite good. But NOT A SOUFFLÉ. Mochi ice cream: super hard and fake flavor. It's a pretty presentation cut up into fourths with toothpicks and whipped cream. Not very crowded at lunch so easy to get a table and fast service. Exceptionally delicious Japanese food! I've been ordering takeout via Doordash and my favorites has been the Dream Machine roll and the Yaki-Udon stir fry dish. GF had a major issue with their vegetarian option. Description fried tofu with seasonal vegetables over rice. The following picture shows how the dish was made poorly for $10.95. The tofu was sitting too long and lost its freshness with a gelatinous texture while the seasonal vegetables are slices of onions on a bed of rice. Where are the vegetables?!? This is not what is described at all. Now I understand if this dish was a hard dish to mess up but I am pretty sure you can make a rendition of this at home with little effort. However, for a restaurant to charge $10.95 for any vegetarian to eat such a dish is unkind and not acceptable. Please improve your quality of food for your customer. My GF hopes they improve their ability to serve all types of eaters with a bit more love and time preparing food especially during a pandemic when customers who would have enjoyed restaurant quality food in restaurants but can't. We were surprised by terrible service and food instead. We ordered relatively basic dishes, the chicken teriyaki and a few rolls to share. Everything took agonizingly long, a large family seated nearby seemed to be getting special treatment because they were vocal and a little obnoxious and somehow this resulted in every other table getting lesser service. Even water refills took long, on multiple occasions we had to ask a few times for refills because they kept forgetting. We also had our server changed up on us multiple times in the span of 1.5 hours which was so weird. They kept introducing themselves as our new server. The food quality itself was also bad. Rolls tasted like grocery store pre-made quality. Salad was bland. Soup was cold. Parking is decent, downtown has street parking and a few lots so you can typically find something within a block or two which isn't too bad. The food is wonderful - I have been eating the sushi here for over 10 years very , very often. It is usually take out. I live nearby and run a business nearby. The service has never been great but I understand the vagaries of restaurants and all -- but tonight had to be the worst. I have never left 1 star, at least not that I remember ever. Tonight I took a walk with my puppy so I decided to try sitting at the out door park-let and have dinner at Barracuda. The two tables being occupied there had a warm torch to sit next to and the server that I saw working there turned the heaters on when the guest sat down. It was jacket weather and my hands are frozen right now since I am still here hoping to get the f ing check. 10 minutes after I sat down a lady server came out and asked if I wanted to order anything to drink first. I said , "no I am ready to order at once." I put in my order for an appetizer of gyoza - my favorite thing here-and two rolls. When asked what I wanted to drink, I asked for a small glass of Japanese beer. She promptly went in to the restaurant and left me in the cold - literally. Before she stepped onto the threshold she swirled around and shouted from a distance, " Do you want something to drink? Maybe a glass of water? " - Really? i had just ordered a small beer a few seconds ago. ---she quickly disappeared (red flag ) Twenty minutes later a young couple sat down a few tables further into the park-let and they were quickly greeted and heated by a different server. He took their orders and they were served in less than 20 minutes. My server never showed. She never checked the table and someone else brought me a very large bottle of beer and walked away. After those twenty minutes she popped out and asked me , " Im sorry, what was the second roll that you had ordered? ( red flag but too late) This meant my order was never placed. Ok so maybe she forgot and we are human but rather than apologize she just left me again so quickly that I could not ask in time for the heater to be turned on and whats with the shouting from a distance to take my order? So unprofessional and honestly it is the restaurant that I blame - why do you hire untrained persons and if they are in training at that time where is her SUPERVISOR? Isn't someone supposed to scan the place from time to time? So finally the other server brings the food and I just wanted to eat and not ruin my dinner by complaining so I ate the rolls so fast - all the while waiting for my Gyoza - I know they need more time to cook so since she just put the order in late- I would have to wait. And wait and wait. And wait - no server to be seen. I was frozen at this point and blew into my cupped hands and started to get up to go see what was the delay. I can see into the restaurant and it was not busy at all. At that moment my server approached and said , " will there be anything else?" I told her I was waiting for my gyoza and she seemed suddenly nervous. She then said quickly, " Ill see what the hold up is." . I got up and said , " forget it I have to leave , it is so late - and you gave me such a huge bottle of beer what was that all about? " Then she said, " Im sorry but we were slammed with customers tonight. " Really ? What the f@#%K AM I? Then she said I wont charge you for the big bottle just for a small bottle- I thought to my self what? I was not complaining about the cost of the beer - she had made so many mistakes , she could not see that she did it repeatedly and at least OWN it? God forbid she might have said she just had trouble remembering things and maybe she should write things down on a check like every other server who has trouble remembering- why do I have to lose out on my dinner? Oh thats right, she had real customers to tend to . Where the hell is the manager? I had my very little puppy and I could not enter the restaurant- otherwise Id be speaking with management right now! After all the loyal years that me and my employees have been eating here , I will not come back . If you want to eat here. Do takeout. read more

Off the main strip is a nice gem. Outdoor and inside eating. Fresh fish and very friendly staff. We had several rolls and the deluxe sashimi for 2. Of course we also had beers if you know me by know. This was our 1st time ordering from here and I must say we aren't planning on eating from here again! I checked in on Yelp and let them k ow that I had checked in and was told I'd receive a free soda. When I went to pick up the order everything seemed ok until I arrived home and noticed that my teriyaki chicken from my dinner place wasn't there. I called to let them know that my order was missing an item and they were very sorry and asked if I wanted to drive back , I had just got off work and picked up dinner in the way so no I wasn't going back. I was told that I'd receive a discount and they will also reimburse the soda ! I didn't want to argue about a soda and so I asked how much the refund will be off my bill and I was told $8 well I just looked at my back and I only received $4 off ! So the plan was to come here for happy hour for some beers and sake. It's been a long tough 9 months of project at work and everyone needed some stress relief. This place was like a whole in the wall and one would totally miss it if you wasn't looking for it. Any-who, we started with a round of sake shots and beers. Throughout the night we ordered many appetizers and more beers to accommodate the sake bombs and god knows how much we had gorged on by time we left. You know when you're relaxed and enjoying the night, time flies and you end up ordering so much stuff? Yes that was. Everything was ok I'd say. Not the best but for happy hour what more can you ask for. The sake seems watered down. The beers was good. With the varieties of sushi rolls I think it could've been larger but I don't care for in that area as I don't eat sushi. However we did order their ramen for dinner. With 5 of us ordering I was shocked at how fast it came Out to us. With my run on Ramen lately I gotta day I was disappointed with this place. For what I paid $15 plus an extra $7 for extra spicy, it sure as heck wasn't worth it at all. But hey you can't get quality every time.
