Arrived 20 min after they opened because we couldn't get anyone on the phone to make a reservation or find out if it was reservation only so showed up anyways. Couple in front of us didn't have a reservation. And they checked the kitchen and then seated them. We get up to the host stand right after them and..."We're full". Apparently ALL tables are reservation only and the bar is the only open seating. The place had open tables everywhere. I dont understand why places do reservation only. People don't show for reservations all the time, and you're going to turn away someone there who is physically there and ready to pay to eat? Makes no sense for customer service and overall customer experience. Ya, great food but very irritating and not interested in coming back. read more

We have been going to this restaurant for several years. It is a favorite spot. We invited a couple who are our dear friends to dinner. We were able to get an 8:00 reservation, that was the earliest reservation available. Upon entering the restaurant there were several tables open. This is unusual as it is typically full. When we were ordering we were told that they are transitioning to a new chef who will be coming soon. In the meantime they were not serving three of the seafood dishes. It is noted that when we dined here in December they were out of several seafood dishes" they said they had a new chef and "the oven was broken." The meal was not up to previous standards, presentation and taste. We have always found the meals and service to be excellent. We were enjoying our time with friends this evening and finishing our wine when at 9:45, the manager came by the table and said something to the effect that he would like to leave in the next ten minutes and go home. We had already paid our $350 bill with a 20% tip for our server and were almost done. We were really offended by this treatment. They should not take an 8:00 reservation if they are gonna kick you out at 9:45. We are sorry that something is happening here, hopefully they can get back to the level of quality food/service they had in the past. In the meantime, we won't be going back anytime soon. read more

After hearing about "Barrel & Fork" for a few years, I had never made it there in person, even though I'm a local living in Cornelius. I heard that their Filet Mignon was one of the best around. Initially, I found it hard to believe seeing as the location and building didn't exactly scream that you could find a fine steak within. I've been to such places as Ruth's Chris, The Capital Grille, Shula's Steakhouse, Del Frisco's, Morton's The Steakhouse in Chicago to name a few, and feel that I have a very realistic idea of what a high quality steak is. Last month on October 19th, I decided to give "Barrel & Fork" a try, I saw the Filet Mignon on the menu with size options of 8, 12 & 14oz. I selected the 12oz and it was to be served on a bed of mashed potatoes and asparagus. It took a bit longer than I anticipated to arrive, about 40 minutes to be more exact. However, what I was given was nothing less than incredible! It was truly one of if not THE best steaks I had ever had! I was honestly shocked! The price of $46 at that point didn't even phase me and I felt it was totally worth it! The mashed potatoes and asparagus were seasoned to perfection as well! I told some friends and family of the experience afterwards because I could hardly believe it! For almost a month I had been thinking of that incredible meal, and decided to go again last night. Upon being seated and reading the menu, I noticed that while the filet was still on the menu, the size options were no longer there. Also, this time it would be served with grilled broccolini and roasted fingerling potatoes. I asked the waiter Brendan about it, and he informed me that about three weeks ago they got a new chef and that he was really changing the menu. He mentioned that not many people ordered a 12 or 14oz filet, so they removed it. Skeptical and disappointed, I decided to give it a try and ordered it again. This time the food was brought out in about 25 minutes, but it was a very different experience. I was seated in a small room in the front of the home/restaurant and there was an excessively loud group of 6 women along with two couples- all of them had been drinking heavily. The volume was almost unbearable. Remembering how loud it was the last visit, I decided to bring a decibel meter with me to gauge the sound levels. I pulled out the decibel meter and it was registering a consistent 85-90dB! The steak this time was overcooked and had absolutely no flavor. It was as if it had just been put on the grill with no seasoning whatsoever. There were approximately 5 meagerly thin stalks of broccolini and they were not seasoned at all either. There was maybe 1 cup of fingerling potatoes and from the one I tried, they were cooked well and seasoned decently. I must say that I was supremely disappointed with my visit this time to "Barrel & Fork" and no longer feel the need to return because of the food, but also the dining environment. So while I cannot speak to the other dishes on the menu, if you're looking for a great Filet mignon, in my opinion, this is no longer the place for it. I sure hope they left things on good terms with their former chef....they may need to call him back in soon! read more

We were celebrating my husband's Big '70' Birthday and he requested to go to Barrel and Fork - easy place to go to as we live in Cornelius - I wholeheartedly agreed! We had the perfect table, right in the middle of all the activity by the bar. Our waiter was wonderful and he gave us a history lesson for this very cool restaurant. The Owner came by and gave us well wishes, along with the best pecan pie ever for husband's birthday dessert. Food was perfectly prepared. We'd heard great things and were not disappointed. We sat on the porch while it was around 50 degrees outside and their heaters kept us warm. I started with the Ghost of Shiloh which was delicious, not too sweet,, but not too strong. My husband had the Old Fashioned which was also wonderful, they did the smoked technique which I don't care for but he enjoyed it. We enjoyed the tuna appetizer, which just melted in your mouth. We both ordered the chicken and waffles, which were good. The chicken was bone-in which is rare, but easy enough to negotiate. I'm on the hunt for THE best but this wasn't it. Tasty, but not worth the price in my opinion. We also got a couple of side to share, the brussel spouts were phenomenal. We also had the lobster mac and cheese which was good, not fabulous. Overall, the experience was great. Our service was wonderful and with a reservation, we were able to get in on a Saturday evening. Hands down the best Brunch in North Carolina. From the time you meet the hostess to the time you leave the staff anticipates anything you may need and is so incredibly friendly. Our food was incredible, just as the server said it would be. I had the Churchill with hollandaise sauce and every part of it was absolutely divine! My friend has there prohibition fried chicken sandwich with French fries and every bite was so good! They also sent out complimentary lemon blueberry cornbread muffins and they were the perfect amount of sweet and savory. I just cannot say enough good things about this place, you have to try it out!! I would definitely make a reservation though as it's a smaller location but just beautiful in every way. Last night at Barrel and Fork I was served what I believe is the worst prepared meal I have been served in my 70+ years. I ordered what the menu described as a 14 oz Elk Chop with roasted root vegetables broccolini and chive mint chimmi. Without warning or choice to substitute, I got two small bone in rib chops which the server described as 7 oz elk chops. Perhaps they were from young calf elk because the rib bones were of the approximate diameter of a baby back rib. Although I cannot say for sure, my experience with hunting and butchering leads me to believe that this was not elk. It seemed way too small. The root vegetables were simply piled on the plate and were charred almost beyond recognition. The broccolini was on the side and also charred. In short, not an attractive plating. My meal should not have left the kitchen. Bottom line I will not go back or recommend until I hear they have a new executive chef. read more

We are new to the area and have been looking for a great date night spot. Barrel and Fork nailed it. Such a cozy, quaint atmosphere! The front porch is great for alfresco and I imagine the yard is too on a non rainy night. Our server was top notch (wish I could remember her name!) She moved us away from the rain and wind but we were still able to enjoy being outdoors. She was quick with service and brought back a fabulous concoction from the bar (cheers to the mixologists!). We both ordered seafood and it was fresh and prepared perfectly. Side of brussels sprout with bacon...bam! So good (hats off the chef!). Check out this unique dining experience. read more

Intimate setting with a high energy vibe. There is nothing this unique within 20 miles of the greater North Mecklenburg area. What a cool blend of hip and old school in the brick/industrial pipe bar. The smoked bourbon old fashioned was a spectacular show and the wide selection of bourbon/whiskey offered numerous options for upgrades. The Arancini(new to me), calamari, and Brussels were delicious and turned out to be enough for our meal in terms of serving size. I recommend reservations well in advance of the weekend (they say 2 weeks out) and a few days ahead during the week. Wow what an experience. Our waitress Allie was attentive, extremely knowledgeable, welcoming and very fun. We ordered four of their old fashioneds, which were smokey and delightful. The scallops were huge, the elk was gamey and delicious (though overshadowed by some amazing sweet potatoes), the ribeye was cooked wonderfully.
