Bottom Line: Good food, friendly staff but a bit disorganized. While staying in Kitty Hawk in April we ordered breakfast sandwiches from Barrier Island Bagels on a few days. They have a nice selection of bagels and sandwiches and we were able to call our order in so that was nice. Also, when we arrived each day to pick up our sandwiches the staff was very nice. But, things were a bit hectic and unorganized - more on that later. As a creature of habit I ordered the egg, ham and cheese on a rosemary olive oil bagel which I really enjoyed. But, I am still wondering about the French Toast Bagel which looked amazing! Where I found the experience to be disappointing was related to the pick up process. First, on both days the timeline for our bagels to be ready was significantly underestimated. And it wasn't unclear where to wait for call in orders. We waited where we thought we were supposed to wait per a sign indicating we should wait there but we never got helped so then we got in the ordering line. And another customer came to pick up her order and the employee handed it to her and walked away and she had to call out to him that she needed to pay. And there was some fumbling around with a new register system and they were out of coffee. None of those things were a huge deal but I was expecting a little bit better flow. Overall, a good spot for a quick breakfast. Our orders were correct and satisfying and they seem to be following COVID protocols like requiring employees to wear masks. The food was great. i got the hangover cure and added a few things, it was very yummy. My friend built her own little veggie bagel. Not super vegan friendly place but definitely lots of Vegetarian options. My other friend got the southwest bagel and they forgot the egg but they said it was still delicious. They had a few things on the menu they didn't actually have. The service wasn't anything spectacular but we got what we needed. The ambiance was very casual and I liked the outdoor seating. Wow! We got our breakfast to go here and it was ready quickly. A great selection of bagels and sandwiches. My husband tried the biscuits and gravy and is still raving about it! I got the hangover and was packed with bacon, cheese and eggs. It was one of the most filling breakfast sandwiches I ever had. Heard good things about the place so we had high hopes of a good experience but was far from it. Service was terrible. Waitress had no smile and had a bad case of RBF Ordered coffee brought with no condiments (creamer/ sugar). Nor was I asked if I wanted any. Had to get up and get it from another table. Tried to order a bagel sandwich and the flavor I asked for they were out of as well as my second choice. Only then were we told which bagel flavor they had. Should have politely left then but was trying hard to make it a good experience. Heads up prob should have listened to my wife but...... food came out in a reasonable time. Waitress dropped off plates and left before asking if we needed anything. Well we did need something. Salt, pepper, silverware, more coffee and napkins. All of which we either got from another table or another employee. Basic stuff that one would expect to have when eating. The French Toast bagel is amazing. I keep thinking about when I can go back and get another, it was that good lol. I had it with strawberry cream cheese. I also tried my boyfriend's plain bagel with bacon cream cheese which was unique - very baconey. Not sure if I'd get that again. Service was quick. read more

Stopped in early Sunday morning. Service was quick and prompt. I had ordered 3 bagels, plain with plain cream cheese, everything with scallion cream cheese, and the owners approval on everything. Everything was fantastic and bagels were huge. Only knock I'd give is the price. Little pricy for 3 bagels and my total was $24. I'd be a returning customer next time I'm in town. read more

We found this place through yelp! There is a bagel place nearly across the street from our place, but after reading the reviews we decided it was worth the 10 minute drive to BIB. It's a family owned business and the owners were there working - mom was working hard while carrying her adorable daughter. Their selection of bagels was abundant, and they are soft and eatable rather than hard and chewy (Brueggers!). Their cream cheese was smooth, and rich and just so good. My husband got the hangover bagel which was huge and delicious. Breakfast was so good that we ordered lunch to eat on the beach. Both sandwiches were packed with fresh ingredients and Boar's Head deli meat. They were also large sandwiches guaranteed to fill you up (they're not served on a bagel but can be if requested). Got there as they opened and picked up some bagels for the house and sandwiches for the road. My lox sandwich was on a plain bagel and had more cream cheese and minimal fish, but still tasted ok. All the bagel flavors were not out yet, so we waited a bit for the Asiago and egg bagels to come out. No big deal since we weren't in a hurry. We dined in and had the Jersey bagel (lox, capers, cream cheese, red onion) and the Ghost Ship (biscuit sandwich with sausage, egg, cheese, and covered with sausage gravy). They were flavorful but too salty - as tourists we felt this was by far the saltiest meal we ate during our week trip. Service was decent, bathrooms were clean. On my recent trip to North Carolina, my colleague and I weren't feeling like cooking the first morning, and the regular bagel place I frequent when I visit was closed, so we found this little bagel shop quite nearby our rental. I ordered a bacon egg and cheese sandwich on an egg bagel and it was pretty tasty! The bagel was well constructed and had a great texture -- clearly fresh and delicious. Owner is very nasty. Will never go again. She could not find order and said if it was door dash she can't help me. Even though I went through their site to order a pick up. All she had to do was go in the back and see if there was a ticket she refused to do so. I asked for refund that was delayed. I showed her the order on line and through my email. Still nothing. If one of her workers weren't so nice to find my order that she's so-called could not find. I told her we come every year and I will not come again. She said that was fine by her. First time at Barrier Bagels. Coffee offering is modest and not hot, just warm. The real star is the food. We ordered the French Toast Bagel and BLT Sandwich. Both outstandingly delicious! The French Toast bagel was a sweet & crunchy bagel with decadent cinnamon cream cheese & 2 ample pieces of perfectly cooked bacon. Placed an order online one morning while in OBX (which is the way to go, btw). I had the pb&jelly french toast bagel (yummy!)..tasted like dessert!! My daughter had the plain bagel with strawberry cream cheese (which was good) and my husband had the ghost ship which was a sausage egg and cheese biscuit covered with sausage gravy. These bagels were pretty decent! Not the best bagels I've ever had- I typically like more "robust" bagels, and these are pretty soft and chewy, which many people like! They're just not my favorite style of bagel. The bagels are pretty large so they're really filling. Overall my family was happy with the bagels, they had lots of options so we were able to find something for everyone, with the everything, sesame, and jalapeño cheddar bagels being the biggest hits.
