Happy hour here is great!!! Another great random find thanks to yelp. I was a bit skeptical given the reviews but after consulting google reviews I decided to take a chance because I was hangry!! Drinks are really good- my fav being the mamacita margarita- our waitress Marla was really amazing and added jalapeños to my mamacita margarita for an added touch. Carnita tacos were my fav dish, followed by the ceviche, which was very fresh. The mahi taco was also really good. Fish was breaded so it filled me up quickly. A friend who was with me ordered the chicken tamale and that was good- I ordered the house made habanero salsa for an extra kick to add to all dishes and that was definitely a special addition- would highly recommend. Overall this was a really pleasant experience. I'm surprised the reviews are lower given the experience I had with my crew- we even went back the day after and brought more friends. Crispy, homemade chips and Three different salsas. All spectacular. BEWARE...our server didn't warn us that one of them is SUPER spicy - habanero. Eat small bites. Barrio gives you a good deal and nice ambiance and super quick service whenever I have dined in. The outdoor patio is pretty good but the construction on Nicollet makes it less appealing. I wish they had a roof-deck patio but that its ok. This location is convenient for casual business lunches or happy hour gatherings. I have experienced both and like their lunch special's better than Happy Hour. They have a GREAT $10 lunch special. I had the Crispy Chicken Tacos were really good. The Tacos were soft flour style mini tacos. The chicken was seasoned well and the unlimited chips with quacamole was a nice combo. Happy Hour doesn't stand out and the drinks are ok so I would suggest taking advantage of their lunch deals. Make a reservation in advance directly or OpenTable and things run pretty smoothly. read more

It also fended off next door competition with Rojo coming and going. They have great lunch specials usually involving a taco combo. They have a wide selection of Tequila and great guacamole. The inside is a bit tight and it is always full, so reservations are recommended. If lucky, there is one upstairs table that I call the cave which is a great place for a small group - it's set aside from the other seating and is private. I've been to Barrio several times now with co-workers when I've been in town for work. It's a favorite among us, and the go-to for Mexican in the downtown area. They don't have a ton of tables, and it can be hard to find a table for more than 4 last minute. If possible, I'd plan to make a reservation in advance for parties larger than 4. If you notice the menu, the items are all singular (ex. tacO, enchiladA, etc.), so be sure you order enough to fill you up. I'd say chips or some appetizer or two to share with the table, and two tacos or small plates should be plenty. The made to order guac is a good choice, as well as the chicken tamale and the ahi tuna taco (served in a crunchy shell, which I prefer). All the tacos are served in soft tortillas unless otherwise stated. They've always done a good job at serving large parties when I've been here but like I said, make a reservation! read more

I was in town for work, and came in for dinner at the suggestion of my Lyft driver (they always know best!). I am glad that I did! I sat at the bar, and the service was impressive and very fast. The bartenders were super nice and chatting with all of the guests about the game that was on - they obviously enjoy working there which says something about a restaurant. Barrio has a decently sized menu with some vegetarian options, and some very interesting cocktails. I ended up with a corn soup and a salad, both of which were delicious. We decided to eat here as a group before going out downtown because of the good location. The atmosphere was cool, fun decor. We had a group of 14, so expected a slight wait for our orders, but the service was very slow, though it wasn't busy at all. Drinks were fun! I got the Mama Cita hibiscus margarita, and others enjoyed other margarita and mojito flavors. We ordered chips and queso and chips and guac for the table. Quad was TINY for $10+, not worth it at all! Queso was super delicious and unique, not like any queso I've had before. For dinner I ordered the masa and potato sopes, which had good flavor and presentation. Others got the tacos, but at $5 and take 30+ minutes to make, they were pretty lame. The guacamole was amazing. The chips has some sort of seasoning on it that added to its flavor. The queso fundido has goat cheese and it was delicious. The chicken enchilada was my least favorite. This is certainly one of the better happy hour / al fresco dining options on the Nicolette Mall. We've only been here for happy hour and late night drinks, so I cannot speak to their "main courses," but everything about our visits was really good. Here's what we liked: 1) Happy Hour food: this is certainly the best happy hour food of any of the restaurants on this part of the Nicolette Mall. Their chips and salsa are a must-order, with three different salsas (be careful, one is pretty spicy!), as is the guac (all taste very fresh and are really good). The tacos are well made too: I especially liked to chicken and steak tacos. 2) Drinks: among the top happy hour spots for drinks, especially if you like really good margaritas. The "Enter the Dragon" is particularly yummy, but they have other good options too. The rest of their cocktails are just so/so, but it is a Mexican restaurant, after-all (although, I have not tried the Michelada yet!). 3) Service: so far, so good. We have had attentive service every time we've eaten here, even when the patio was packed full. 4) Prices: The happy hour prices are certainly good, but the normal prices for most of the food items (such as the tacos) are a bit steep for what you get. Drinks, however, are well priced. 5) Ambiance: I just love sitting out on the Nicolette Mall, people watching with a cold beverage and a snack, so I enjoy the ambiance here. However, there occasionally are people who smoke at the outdoor tables, so be aware that you might run into that here. We tried Barrio for the first time this week as a pre-theatre dinner. They have some nice happy hour specials on food and drink until 6pm. The margaritas were very good. Guacamole with Chips and Salsa - excellent a sampling of guacamole, ancho tomatillo salsa and salsa verde with house made chips Potato Sopes - tasted like vinegar because of the fresh herb salad masa and potato sopes filled with local goat cheese, red chile-tomatillo salsa and a fresh herb salad Pork Carnitas Taco - excellent duroc pork shoulder slow cooked in cinnamon and orange with salsa verde, onion and cilantro Soft Shell Crab Taco - very good crispy soft shell crab, watercress, avocado aioli, watermelon-tomatillo pico de gallo and jalapeno Chicken Enchilada - very good al pastor spiced slow cooked chicken, chihuahua cheese and roasted corn are rolled in a corn tortilla and served in a salsa verde with mexican cream Ahi Tuna Taco - my picky eater husband LOVED this ancho and cumin crusted ahi tuna taco with avocado-tomatillo pico de gallo and chile de arbol salsa in a crispy flour shell We also tried the tres leches cake and butterscotch pudding desserts. Barrio for lunch is just as mediocre as Barrio for HH. Service is slow and food is only ok. I went with a group of 9 and lunch took a full 1.5 hrs. Not because we were slow, but because the waitress took forever to take our orders, then the food came out at a snail's pace. On top of that food didn't even come out at the same time. Therefore we had some people who were still waiting and others who were already done. For lunch I got the Reuben torta was ok, but with the service we had...I should have just went to Potbellys, because there sandwiches are better and service faster. Needless to say I won't be returning. When I have a craving for Mexican lunch I'll just stick with Masa who offers a nice lunch special and good service. read more

We ordered guac, steak tacos, chicken tacos, and a chicken quesadilla. The quesadilla was solid, guac was standard, the steak tacos were really kinda boring and blah. The chicken tacos were amazing though. I always like steak more than chicken so ordered more steak this time than chicken just to find out I should of done it the other way. The cons, nothing but the chicken tacos and whatever sauce is on them that made them so good was amazing. The guac was solid, but it comes with a tiny little bowl of about 20 chips. You have way more guac than chips. I had to eat a ton of guac on each chip to balance it out. If you're asking why I didn't just ask for more chips right now, it's because they give you that little with all that guac and salsa, so they can then charge you an extra $1 for each little extra side of chips you order. While a $1 is stupid and means nothing to me, it was more annoying that even the best places I've ever been to in any state, didn't change extra for chips after only getting a handful. While I would eat the crap out of the chicken tacos, understand these are street tacos. The really small ones that most people can eat anywhere from 3-10 of. They are also about $6 or more each. So 3 mini tacos is $18. So while money might not matter, at that price range they better be the best tacos I've ever had, because I've been to authentic Mexican places that have full size tacos that taste better, for $4 each. It still gets 3 stars because the place was nice, food was slow and came out randomly, but service was super friendly. Anyone that worked had a smile on their face even though they were slammed. So try it out, but eat the chicken tacos. At least then the flavor might be worth the 45 min wait for food and the price tag. read more

Enjoyed our first visit. Appreciate the a la carte options but ultimately decided on small plates to share. The elotes were very tasty: well-seasoned with not drowning in crema. The snapper ceviche was a great starter, light and served with chips. The beef skewers have quite a kick to them so if you have a low tolerance for heat, this dish isn't your cup of tea. The wild mushroom empanadas was a great compliment to that spicy beef plate. We had dessert as well. Interesting take on a tres leches cake; the sponge was very light which made it a good way to end the meal. The flourless chocolate cake hit the spot for my hubby. I've been to Barrio a couple of times when visiting Minneapolis for work. They have good food, drinks, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes this a great choice for post-work dinners. Their guacamole is served in a lava bowl, and is super creamy, with a few avocado chunks. The portion appears smaller than it really is due to the size of the bowl. Their homemade chips are real standouts - thick, both salty and spicy, and just plain delicious. I have had their fish, shrimp, and tuna tacos. The tuna taco is served in a deep fried tortilla with guacamole. It was the fullest of the tacos I've had, but I think I would have preferred a non-fried shell. The shrimp and fish tacos are small, but delicious. It's hard to pick a favorite! Their drinks are always good, and service is very quick, with your tacos coming out as soon as they are ready (and not all together). Relax, and enjoy them as they come.
