We had heard how amazing Barrio Queen and were so excited to have a new location open up on the west side. The restaurant is spacious and I fell in love with the decor. However, the authenticity was only conveyed through the visual aesthetic and not the food. We ordered Cochinito Pibil which is one of the most traditional plates in Mexico. The entrees came out looking like they popped right out of a magazine. The temperature was perfect and the meat was cooked to perfection... the only thing missing? Flavor. The atmosphere and decor was great . The food lacked flavor, very bland, and over priced . Torta had nothing just meat and aioli for 18 bucks . Menu said it had more toppings but came out plain . Ordered michelada chingona and this was also missing ingredients described in menu . Service was not that great our waiter didn't really check on us and we had no napkins and forks until she finally decided to check on us . I didn't leave a tip since she only checked on us once and when bringing check . I was walking out when server yelled and called me cheap bastard for not leaving tip . NEVER AGAIN!! I'm an understanding person however this was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. The wait to just order my food was ridiculous. After waiting 30 minutes to order we then waited over 30 minutes to be served our underwhelming food! The food had no flavor and even sent an entree back because I couldn't enjoy it. Our server wasn't knowledgeable about the menu, and we didn't even receive the dessert that comes included with the kids meals. I wasn't told about up-charges until I received my bill. I went there with high hopes even though I read these reviews, I wanted to so bad love it but I didn't. The chips were good, the salsa was good. I added some lemon juice to make it taste better. I got the fish tacos, the tortilla was too small for the fish and the fish was so bland, no flavor. I tried adding salsa and lemon juice to give it flavor. I also got a carne asada taco and the meat had some flavor was it was chewy & small. My husband got a burrito and his burrito was also bland and something he was able to make it home. We knew the location just opened up so we knew it could be a long wait time. The wait was over an hour and when we walked in there were a lot of empty tables. The waitress even said "we aren't busy tonight" which I find strange since there were a lot of people outside waiting and we waited so long. They seemed very short staffed. Highly disappointed. Enchiladas and tacos had no flavor or spice. Completely bland. Ordered the table side guacamole and the order never got put in. Our entrees were delivered and that's when they realized it and put the order in. Then it comes out in a bowl, not mashed up like guacamole should be. I've been to the location in Scottsdale and it was fantastic! Apparently, someone forgot to teach the employees at the Avondale location what guacamole actually is... for $12.50 you're supposed to get a beautiful bowl of guac, made right at your table. Instead, we got a diced avocado with some tomatoes and green onions. In order to eat it, we had to mash out with our forks! I ordered the triple tamale plate and was asked if rice and beans were OK with it. Assuming it was included in the price.... NOT!! She ordered an entree that DID include rice and beans, and the beans were ice cold! Only drinks we had were ice waters, and no dessert was ordered! Price W/O tip, was $63.00! We about crapped ourselves, right there!! WAY, WAY, WAY OVERPRICED for what you get! You're better off at a Filberto's! It's no wonder this chain of restaurants were bought out by a BBQ chain! I loved the one on Bell. So my first visit, I thought it was Covid related & lack of employees. Poor service, cold food. Gave you another try. Not great service the trio mole enchiladas were very tasty but COLD. So last Sunday I had high hopes. My chicken taco had grizzle instead of chicken. My pastor was fatty. Both cold & awful. I didn't eat it. My 3 friends said their food was cold and not tasty. I won't be back and was so looking forward to this new place being GREAT! So we decided to give Barrio Queen another shot hoping they got all the issues worked out. I did receive an email address from a manager after my last post and I am appreciative of that and they are trying to improve. Last night we visited for my wife's birthday dinner, just 4 of us and walking into the restaurant and at the hostess counter, with no one but myself and the family there, the hostess never greeted us. I stood there in awkward silence until she finally pulled her eyes away from the iPad to ask me how many...no welcome or hello, just how many? We get seated and listen to a nice kid playing guitar which was nice ambiance and order some drinks. My tea came out quickly but my wife and kids drinks took significantly longer to come out. We ordered queso and the table-side guacamole which they actually made table side which was an improvement. The queso was supposed to be served with "fresh" tortillas wasn't served that way and we had to remind the waitress, who was very nice by they way, but they were not warm at all and not fresh because the edges were hard and cold. Our entrees came out last and everything came out mostly as ordered. My enchiladas were cold and made with the same, not fresh tortillas and the cheese was rubbery which leads me to believe they sat in the window waiting for the rest of our food to be ready. My daughters burrito had the pico inside when she ordered it without because she doesn't like onions so she was picking out pieces of carne asada and not eating the burrito the way we ordered it. We tried Barrio Queen for the first time for a late lunch. It was clean and nicely decorated and we were seated promptly. Maria was our server and was very nice. My margarita seemed smaller than I usually get, but my husband's Paloma was huge and filled with fruit. My shrimp tacos were tasty and I loved the cabbage instead of lettuce. It was my first time at this location and we definitely won't be back. None of the food was good at all. My son ordered the cheese enchiladas with red sauce and the sauce was terrible. He didn't like it at all. So when the waitress came to the table to ask about the food, I said he did not like it, and he was not going to eat it and she just said, oh, I'm sorry about that. And that was it. Still got charged for it and didn't offer to take it back and make him something else, nothing. The only thing he ended up eating from his plate was a little bit of the rice. The refried beans were also terrible, they tasted like they were out of a can. I had a veggie taco, which also had an odd taste. Wasn't very tasty at all. My daughter had the kids meal bean burrito and again just an odd taste to everything. The manager was just standing around, I was going to let him know about the disappointing food when he walked to our table to ask how things were going, but he ended up walking to a couple tables and not ours. He didn't seem really concerned with what was going on in the restaurant. The waitress kept forgetting things, I had to ask her for lemon for the water and ketchup for the fries several times. There weren't even many people in the restaurant. But like I said, we won't be back. The food and service were not good at all. read more

We arrived shortly after opening to a mostly empty restaurant yet we still had to wait about 20 minutes while we stared at empty tables. There was definitely no shortage of employees, they were everywhere. Once we sat, we waited 10 minutes to put our drink orders in. My girlfriend got her drink but I never did. I flagged down our waitress (and the manager) 4 times repeatedly asking for my drink. Each time, they apologized but never came back with it. I eventually got my drink in the middle of my meal, which was at least a 30 minute wait. The food was cold but decent tasting. Comparing it to the Bell Rd location which I have been to dozens of times it wasn't quite as good. The portions were smaller and just not quite as flavorful, but still good. I was charged for my margarita that I had to ask for 4 different times and got after 30+ minutes in the middle of my meal. You would think the least they could do is comp my drink for the horrible service. I understand that they are working out the kinks as a new location, but there is zero excuse to treat a customer so poorly and then charge them as if the service was fine. I want to start out by saying that the service was excellent! But, the food was disappointing! I chips were great but, the salsa lacked flavor. The portions were tiny and I will be ordering out tonight from another restaurant. As far the the main dish was concern I ordered the Queen enchiladas with shrimp added and found four shrimp for the additional $6 dollars not worth the additional cost. The enchiladas save the small leaf of spinach were empty. The sauce outside the enchilada was flavorful but, not enough. I tried a bite of my husband's taco and concluded that I got the better entree such that it was. The chocolate cake desert (such that it was) was ordinary and I could have gone to Sprinkles cupcakes for half the price and far better quality. Need to update my review as the last few times I've visited I haven't had the same experience as my reviews left in the past. I keep trying because those initial visits to the Avondale location were great and I keep hoping for the same experience. Tonight I ordered the take out option and though I ordered 8 oz of extra salsa $5 and the guacamole $12.50 in addition to our food, we were only given one bag of chips and 2 small salsa containers, rather than the 8 oz size. I was assured the 2 small containers were of equal proportion but they were only equal to 6oz in my measuring cup once home. It wouldn't have bothered me so much if I hadn't have paid extra and tipped as if I'd eaten in the restaurant, but please heed this word of warning. If you opt to pay more for the salsa so you can feed the 4 people you ordered dinner for, you'll no longer get the regular complimentary chips and salsa in your order. Unfortunately the entire experience left a bad taste in my mouth, which is not something I expect from a chain such as Barrio Queen. Also, the guacamole had no pomegranate seeds in it... which is what makes it so unique and worthwhile. So disappointed. read more

Stopped in with a friend for lunch. If you like Mexican food it's worth a visit. Atmosphere was great and really good food and nice selection of drinks. Great time, but probably not a regular spot as it's overpriced for the small portions of food. If it's a place to check out- you're good to go. I thought this place was delicious. They have a really big menu with tons of options. I tried the new carne asada plate with rice, beans, grilled onions, small chorizo queso taco, fried fish tacos(pescado), and the trio mole enchiladas. I loved it all. The carne asada was tasty and tender. The fish tacos were amazing. And the enchiladas where delicious too . The chips and salsa are ok. I think they use flour tortillas for the chips , not a big fan of those. Also the service I got was excellent. I cant wait to go back to try more on the menu. The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars is because this place is very expensive. I dont think I've ever spent that much on mexican food . read more

This is a review for take out, which I am always willing to be lenient on because I know food is always tastier when served piping hot but everything we got was still pretty disappointing. The portions were incredibly small given the quality and price. I ordered the Arizona Burrito and the pork was tough and there were really large chunks of onion and pepper that were just not appetizing to bite into. There was way too much sauce in it too so it fell apart quickly. The salsas were also pretty bland. We already had some frozen Costco elote at home so we decided to forego Barrio Queen's to save some money and it honestly tasted just as good/on par with the rest of the food. I hope these problems were primarily due to the fact that we got take out vs dine in but I'm definitely not rushing to try eating at the actual restaurant. read more

First time here and loved it! I had the beer battered fish taco and my husband had the steak ranchero. We both thought they were cooked/prepared perfectly. Maria at the bar was wonderful.
